Majorana Edge Modes in Isolated Wires

Topological superconductors are believed to host exotic quasiparticle excitations known as Majorana zero modes (MZMs), with much of the evidence based on BCS mean-field theory. The direct application of mean-field arguments is tenuous in finite, isolated systems relevant in some experiments. Here, we develop a new correlation-based method for identifying MZMs in interacting, number-conserving systems. Using the density matrix renormalization group, we study fermion number-conserving models with long-range interactions, which under periodic boundary conditions exhibit robust topological and nontopological superconductivity, tuned by the strength of interaction [Ortiz et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 267002 (2014)]. We find evidence that, on the topological side, Majorana edge modes appear in open chains, manifesting as the vanishing of the energy splitting between odd- and even-parity ground states with increasing system size. Additionally, off-diagonal two-point correlation functions show nonlocal, parity-dependent edge effects. These correlations reveal the spatial structure of Majorana modes in the many-body wave function. We show that the correlation diagnostic applies broadly, including to short-range interacting models, where topological superconductivity is more fragile due to the absence of a bulk excitation gap.

DFT Plus DMFT Study of Spin-Charge-Lattice Coupling in Covalnt LaCoO{siub 3}.

We study energetics and the nature of both homogeneous and mixed spin (MS) states in LaCoO3 incorporating structural changes of the crystal volume expansion and the Co-O bond disproportionation (BD) during the spin-state transition using the density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT + DMFT) method. DFT + DMFT predicts that energetics of both excited spin states are almost the same while DFT + U calculations of the same structures energetically favor the MS states and produce various metastable solutions whose energetics depend sensitively on final spin states. Within DFT + DMFT, the homogeneous spin state in the expanded crystal volume shows the multiconfigurational nature with non-negligible occupancy probabilities of both high spin (HS) and low spin (LS) states along with d(6) and d(7) charge configurations indicating the dynamically fluctuating nature of spin and charge states due to the Co-O covalency. The nature of the MS state under the BD structure reveals that Co sites with the long Co-O bonds develop a Mott insulating state and favor HS with a d(6) configuration, while more covalent Co sites with the short Co-O bonds occupy more LS states with a d(7) configuration and behave as a band insulator, as a result, charge ordering is induced in the BD structure from the spin-state ordering. We also find that both energetics and electronic structure sensitively depend on the Co-O covalency effect, which can be tuned by changing the double counting potential and the resulting d occupancy (N-d), and N-d close to 6.7 is consistent with the nature of the spin-state transition. Our results show that structural changes during the spin-state transition can play an important role in understanding energetics and electronic structure of LaCoO3.

Magnetic order and fluctuations in the quasi-two-dimensional planar magnet Sr( Co 1-x Ni x ) 2 As 2

We use neutron scattering to investigate spin excitations in Sr ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 As 2 , which has a c -axis incommensurate helical structure of the two-dimensional (2D) in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) ordered layers for 0.013 ≤ x ≤ 0.25 . By comparing the wave vector and energy dependent spin excitations in helical ordered Sr ( Co 0.9 Ni 0.1 ) 2 As 2 and paramagnetic SrCo 2 As 2 , we find that Ni doping, while increasing lattice disorder in Sr ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 As 2 , enhances quasi-2D FM spin fluctuations. However, our band structure calculations within the combined density functional theory and dynamic mean field theory ( DFT + DMFT ) failed to generate a correct incommensurate wave vector for the observed helical order from nested Fermi surfaces. Furthermore, since transport measurements reveal increased in-plane and c -axis electrical resistivity with increasing Ni doping and associated lattice disorder, we conclude that the helical magnetic order in Sr ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 As 2 may arise from a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism through the itinerant electron mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions.

Low-energy interband transition in the infrared response of the correlated metal SrVO 3 in the ultraclean limit

We studied the low-energy electronic response of the prototypical correlated metal SrVO 3 in the ultraclean and disordered limit using infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory calculations (DFT+DMFT). A strong optical excitation at 70 meV is observed in the optical response of the ultraclean samples but is hidden by the low-energy Drude-like response from intraband excitations in the more disordered samples. DFT+DMFT calculations reveal that this optical excitation originates from interband transitions between the bands split by orbital off-diagonal hopping, which has often been ignored in cubic systems, such as SrVO 3 . A memory function analysis of the optical data shows that this interband transition can lead to deviations of optical self-energy from the expected Fermi-liquid behavior. Our findings demonstrate that analysis schemes employed to extract many-body effects from optical spectra may be oversimplified to study the true electronic ground state and that improvements in material quality can guide efforts to refine theoretical approaches.

Valence, charge transfer, and orbital-dependent correlation in bilayer nickelates Nd 3 Ni 2 O 7

We examine the bulk electronic structure of Nd 3 Ni 2 O 7 using Ni 2 p core-level hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy combined with density functional theory + dynamical mean-field theory. Our results reveal a large deviation of the Ni 3 d occupation from the formal Ni 2.5 + valency, highlighting the importance of the charge transfer from oxygen ligands. We find that the dominant d 8 configuration is accompanied by nearly equal contributions from d 7 and d 9 states, exhibiting an unusual valence state among Ni-based oxides. Finally, we discuss the Ni d x 2 − y 2 and d z 2 orbital-dependent hybridization, correlation and local spin dynamics. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Hole doping and electronic correlations in Cr substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

For a significant composition range, the suppression of the spin density wave transition temperature (T SDW ) in Cr- and Mn-substituted BaFe 2 As 2 (CrBFA and MnBFA, respectively) coincides as a function of Cr/Mn content, despite the distinct electronic effects of these substitutions. Additionally, for any Cr/Mn content superconductivity (SC) is absent and this topic is particularly less explored in the case of CrBFA. Here, in this work, we employ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and combined density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) to address the evolution of the Fermi surface (FS) and electronic correlations in CrBFA. Our findings reveal that incorporating Cr leads to an effective hole doping of the states near the FS, which is well described within the virtual crystal approximation (VCA). Moreover, analysis of the ARPES spectra of the bands with main d yz -orbital character reveals a fractional scaling of the imaginary part of self-energy as a function of the binding energy, a signature property of Hund's correlations. Our DFT+DMFT calculations support these experimental findings. We conclude that CrBFA is a correlated electron system for which the changes in the FS as a function of Cr are unrelated to the suppression of T SDW . In addition, we suggest that the absence of SC is primarily due to the competition between Cr local moments and the Fe-derived itinerant spin fluctuations.

Correlation strength and orbital differentiation across the phase diagram of plutonium metal

We compare the trends on the strength of electronic correlations across the different phases of elemental Pu focusing on its site and orbital dependence, using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations within the vertex corrected one crossing approximation. We find that Pu-5f states are more correlated in δ -Pu, followed by some crystallographic sites in α and β phases. In addition, we observe that Pu-5f 5/2 and Pu-5f 7/2 orbital differentiation is a general feature of this material, as is site differentiation in the low-symmetry phases. The Pu-5f 5/2 states show Fermi liquid like behavior, whereas the Pu-5f 7/2 states remaining incoherent down to very low temperatures. We correlate the correlation strength in the different phases to their structure and the Pu-5 f occupancy of their crystallographic sites.

Delocalized polaron and Burstein-Moss shift induced by Li in α–V 2 O 5 : A DFT + DMFT study

For this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT)+U and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver to investigate the electronic properties of V 2 O 5 and Li x V 2 O 5 (x = 0.125 and 0.25). Pristine V 2 O 5 is a charge-transfer insulator with strong O p–V d hybridization, and it exhibits a large band gap (E gap ) as well as a nonzero conduction-band (CB) gap.We show that the band gap, the number of d electrons of vanadium, N d , and the CB gap for V 2 O 5 obtained from our DMFT calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental values. While the DFT +U approach replicates the experimental band gap, it overestimates the value of N d and underestimates the CB gap. In the presence of low Li doping, the electronic properties of V 2 O 5 are mainly driven by a polaronic mechanism, and electron spin resonance and electron nuclear double resonance spectroscopies observed the coexistence of free and bound polarons. Notably, our DMFT results identify both polaron types, with the bound polaron being energetically preferred, while the DFT +U method only predicts the free polaron. Our DMFT analysis also reveals that increased Li doping leads to electron filling in the conduction band, shifting the Fermi level. This result is consistent with the observed Burstein-Moss shift upon enhanced Li doping, and we thus demonstrate that the DFT + DMFT approach can be used for an accurate and realistic description of strongly correlated materials.

Symmetric Kondo Lattice States in Doped Strained Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We use the topological heavy fermion (THF) model and its Kondo lattice (KL) formulation to study the possibility of a symmetric Kondo (SK) state in twisted bilayer graphene. Via a large-N approximation, we find a SK state in the KL model at fillings v = 0,±1,±2 where a KL model can be constructed. In the SK state, all symmetries are preserved and the local moments are Kondo screened by the conduction electrons. At the mean-field level of the THF model at v = 0,±1,±2,±3 we also find a similar symmetric state that is adiabatically connected to the symmetric Kondo state. We study the stability of the symmetric state by comparing its energy with the ordered (symmetry-breaking) states found in [H. Hu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 026502 (2023)., Z.-D. Song and B. A. Bernevig, Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 047601 (2022).] and find the ordered states to have lower energy at v = 0,±1,±2. However, moving away from integer fillings by doping the light bands, our mean-field calculations find the energy difference between the ordered state and the symmetric state to be reduced, which suggests the loss of ordering and a tendency toward Kondo screening. In order to include many-body effects beyond the mean-field approximation, we also performed dynamical mean-field theory calculations on the THF model in the nonordered phase. The spin susceptibility follows a Curie behavior at v = 0,±1,±2 down to ~2 K where the onset of screening of the local moment becomes visible. This hints to very low Kondo temperatures at these fillings, in agreement with the outcome of our mean-field calculations. At noninteger filling v = ±0.5,±0.8,±1.2 dynamical mean-field theory shows deviations from a 1/T susceptibility at much higher temperatures, suggesting a more effective screening of local moments with doping. Lastly, we study the effect of a C 3⁢z -rotational-symmetry-breaking strain via mean-field approaches and find that a symmetric phase (that only breaks C 3⁢z symmetry) can be stabilized at sufficiently large strain at v = 0,±1,±2. Our results suggest that a symmetric Kondo phase is strongly suppressed at integer fillings, but could be stabilized either at noninteger fillings or by applying strain.

Origin of mean-field behavior in an elastic Ising model

Simple elastic models of spin-crossover compounds are known empirically to exhibit classical critical behavior. Here, we demonstrate how the long-range interactions responsible for this behavior arise naturally upon integrating out mechanical fluctuations of such a model. A mean-field theory applied to the resulting effective Hamiltonian quantitatively accounts for both thermodynamics and kinetics observed in computer simulations, including a barrier to magnetization reversal that grows extensively with system size. For nanocrystals, which break translational symmetry, a straightforward extension of mean-field theory yields similarly accurate results.

Strong anharmonicity dictates ultralow thermal conductivities of type-I clathrates

Type-I clathrate solids have attracted significant interest due to their ultralow thermal conductivities and sub- sequent promise for thermoelectric applications, yet the mechanisms underlying these properties are not well understood. Here, we extend the framework of vibrational dynamical mean-field theory (VDMFT) to calculate temperature-dependent thermal transport properties of solids using a many-body Green’s function approach. When applied to a coarse-grained description of 𝑋 8 Ga 16 Ge 30 , where 𝑋= Ba, Sr, we find that nonresonant scattering between cage acoustic modes and rattling modes leads to a reduction of acoustic phonon lifetimes and thus thermal conductivities. Moreover, we find that the moderate temperature dependence of conductivities above 300 K, which is consistent with experimental measurements, cannot be reproduced by textbook perturbation theory calculations, which predict a 𝑇 −1 dependence. Therefore, we suggest that nonperturbative anharmonic effects, including four- and higher-phonon scattering processes, are responsible for the ultralow thermal conductivities of type-I clathrates.

Field moment expansion method for interacting bosonic systems

In this work, we introduce a numerical method and python package, https://github.com/andillio/CHiMES, that simulates quantum systems initially well approximated by mean field theory using a second order extension of the classical field approach. We call this the field moment expansion method. In this way, we can accurately approximate the evolution of first and second field moments beyond where the mean field theory breaks down. This allows us to estimate the quantum breaktime of a classical approximation without any calculations external to the theory. We investigate the accuracy of the field moment expansion using a number of well studied quantum test problems. Interacting Bosonic systems similar to scalar field dark matter are chosen as test problems. We find that successful application of this method depends on two conditions: the quantum system must initially be well described by the classical theory, and that the growth of the higher order moments be hierarchical.

A topological Hund nodal line antiferromagnet

The interplay of topology, magnetism, and correlations gives rise to intriguing phases of matter. In this study, through state-of-the-art angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, density functional theory, and dynamical mean-field theory calculations, we visualize a fourfold degenerate Dirac nodal line at the boundary of the bulk Brillouin zone in the antiferromagnet YMn 2 Ge 2 . We further demonstrate that this gapless, antiferromagnetic Dirac nodal line is enforced by the combination of magnetism, space-time inversion symmetry, and nonsymmorphic lattice symmetry. The corresponding drumhead surface states traverse the whole surface Brillouin zone. YMn 2 Ge 2 thus serves as a platform to exhibit the interplay of multiple degenerate nodal physics and antiferromagnetism. Interestingly, the magnetic nodal line displays a d-orbital dependent renormalization along its trajectory in momentum space, thereby manifesting Hund's coupling. Our findings offer insights into the effect of electronic correlations on magnetic Dirac nodal lines, leading to an antiferromagnetic Hund nodal line.

Compositional phase stability of correlated electron materials within DFT+DMFT

Predicting the compositional phase stability of strongly correlated electron materials is an outstanding challenge in condensed matter physics, requiring precise computations of total energies. In this work, we employ the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) formalism to address local correlations due to transition metal $\textit{d}$ electrons on compositional phase stability in the prototype rechargeable battery cathode material Li x CoO 2 , and detailed comparisons are made with the simpler DFT+$\textit{U}$ approach (i.e., the Hartree-Fock solution of the DMFT impurity problem). Local interactions are found to strongly impact the energetics of the band insulator LiCoO 2 , most significantly via the $E_g$ orbitals, which are partially occupied via hybridization with $\textit{O p}$ states. We find CoO 2 and Li 1/2 CoO 2 to be moderately correlated Fermi liquids with quasiparticle weights of 0.6–0.8 for the $T_{2g}$ states, which are most impacted by the interactions. Further, as compared to DFT+$\textit{U}$, DFT+DMFT considerably dampens the increase in total energy as $\textit{U}$ is increased, which indicates that dynamical correlations are important to describe this class of materials despite the relatively modest quasiparticle weights. Unlike DFT+$\textit{U}$, which can incorrectly drive Li x CoO 2 toward spurious phase separating or charge-ordered states, DFT+DMFT correctly captures the system's phase stability and does not exhibit a strong charge-ordering tendency. Most importantly, the error within DFT+$\textit{U}$ varies strongly as the composition changes, challenging the common practice of artificially tuning $\textit{U}$ within DFT+$\textit{U}$ to compensate the errors of Hartree-Fock. DFT+DMFT predicts the average intercalation voltage decreases relative to DFT, opposite to the result of DFT+$\textit{U}$, which would yield favorable agreement with experiment in conjunction with the overprediction of the voltage by the strongly constrained and appropriately normed DFT functional.

Orbital selective spin waves in detwinned NaFeAs

The existence of orbital-dependent electronic correlations has been recognized as an essential ingredient to describe the physics of iron-based superconductors. NaFeAs, a parent compound of iron-based superconductors, exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic lattice distortion below T s ≈ 60 K, forming an electronic nematic phase with two 90° rotated (twinned) domains, and orders antiferromagnetically below T N ≈ 42 K. We use inelastic neutron scattering to study spin waves in uniaxial pressure-detwinned NaFeAs. By comparing the data with combined density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory calculations, we conclude that spin waves up to an energy scale of E crossover ≈ 100 meV are dominated by d yz -d yz intraorbital scattering processes, which have the twofold (C 2 ) rotational symmetry of the underlying lattice. On the other hand, the spin wave excitations above E crossover , which have approximately fourfold (C 4 ) rotational symmetry, arise from the d xy -d xy intraorbital scattering that controls the overall magnetic bandwidth in this material. In addition, we find that the low-energy (E ≈ 6 meV) spin excitations change from approximate C 4 to C 2 rotational symmetry below a temperature T* (>T s ), while spin excitations at energies above E crossover have approximate C 4 rotational symmetry and are weakly temperature dependent. Here, these results are consistent with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, where the presence of a uniaxial strain necessary to detwin NaFeAs also raises the onset temperature T* of observable orbital-dependent band splitting to above T s , thus supporting the notion of orbital selective spin waves in the nematic phase of iron-based superconductors.

Electronic structure of LaNiO 2 and CaCuO 2 from a self-consistent vertex-corrected GW approach

In this work, the electronic structure of one of the nickelates (LaNiO 2 ) and one of the cuprates (CaCuO 2 ) is studied with three self-consistent GW-based methods: scGW, sc(GW+vertex), and quasiparticle self-consistent GW. Low-energy features obtained in our study are in many respects similar to the features reported in previous density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) studies. Consistent with the DFT+DMFT conclusion, we find LaNiO 2 to be more correlated than CaCuO 2 . However, correlation effects included in our study change the DFT Fermi surface near the Γ point differently from that reported in DMFT studies. Features that are a few electronvolts away from the Fermi level are broader in our calculations than in the DFT+DMFT, which reflects the differences between the DFT and the GW methods. Our results are in qualitative agreement with previous G0W0 results, but the self-consistency results in quantitative differences. Generally, correlation effects are found to be sufficiently weak in both materials, which allows one to use totally ab initio diagrammatic approaches such as sc(GW+Vertex) and to avoid the methods with adjustable parameters (DFT+U or DFT+DMFT). However, the possibility of some strong correlations at low energy that cannot be captured by perturbative methods cannot be completely excluded. For instance, differences in the Fermi surface should be resolved, thus experimental studies are necessary.

Role of orbital selectivity on crystal structures and electronic states in BiMnO 3 and LaMnO 3 perovskites

Correlated oxides, such as BiMnO 3 and LaMnO 3 , show a complex interplay of electronic correlations and crystal structure exhibiting multiple first-order phase transitions, some without a clear order parameter. The quantitative theoretical description of this temperature-dependent electronic-structural interplay in the vicinity of a Mott transition is still a challenge. Here we address this issue by simultaneously considering both structural and electronic degrees of freedom, within a self-consistent density functional theory with embedded dynamical mean field theory. Our results show the existence of novel electronic states characterized by the coexistence of insulating, semimetallic, and metallic orbitals. This state is in agreement with resonant x-ray scattering. Here we also show that electronic entropy plays a decisive role in both electronic and structural phase transitions. By self-consistent determination of both the electronic state and the corresponding crystal structure, we show that the temperature evolution of these phases can be quantitatively explained from first principles, thus demonstrating the predictive power of the theoretical method for both the structural and the electronic properties.

Anisotropic hybridization in CeRhSn

The optical conductivity σ⁡(ω, T) of CeRhSn was studied by broadband infrared spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent spectral weight transfer occurs over high energy (0.8 eV) and temperature (~500 K) scales, classifying CeRhSn as a mixed-valent compound. The optical conductivity reveals a substantial anisotropy in the electronic structure. Renormalization of σ⁡(ω, T) occurs as a function of temperature to a coherent Kondo state with concomitant effective mass generation. Associated spectroscopic signatures were reproduced remarkably well by the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory using a momentum-independent self-energy. The theory shows that the anisotropy for energies > 10 meV is mainly driven by the bare three-dimensional electronic structure that is renormalized by local electronic correlations. The possible influence of magnetic frustration and quantum criticality is restricted to lower energies.
