Development of a prototype kinestatic platform for application to space and ground servicing tasks. Phase 1: Concept Modeling

The Center for Intelligent Machines and Robotics (CIMAR) of the University of Florida, in conjunction with Rockwell International is developing an electro-mechanical device called a Kinestatic Platform (KP) for aerospace applications. The goal of the current project is to develop a prototype KP which is capable of manipulating a 50 lb. payload. This prototype will demonstrate the feasibility of implementing a scaled up version to perform high precision manipulation of distributed systems and to control contact forces and allowable motions (rotations and translations), which is defined here as Kinestatic Control, in a six dimensional, partially constrained environment, simultaneously and independently. The objectives of the Phase 1 effort were as follows: (1) Identify specific NASA applications where the KP technology can be applied. (2) Select one application for development. (3) Develop a conceptual design of the KP specifically for the selected application. This includes the steps of developing a set of detailed performance criteria, establishing and making selection of the mechanism design parameters, and evaluating the expected system response. (4) Develop a computer graphics animation of the KP as it performs the selected application. This report will proceed by providing a technical description of the KP followed by how each of these objectives was addressed.

Multiple test tubes stirred mechanically

Mechanical device simultaneously stirs multiple test tubes under controlled laboratory conditions. The invention provides a variable stirring rate, minimal amount of contamination of tube contents, unattended and simple operation, and easy maintenance and cleaning.

Concept of planetary gear system to control fluid mixture ratio

Mechanical device senses and corrects for fluid flow departures from the selected flow ratio of two fluids. This system has been considered for control of rocket engine propellant mixture control but could find use wherever control of the flow ratio of any two fluids is desired.

Residual magnetism holds solenoid armature in desired position

Holding solenoid uses residual magnetism to hold its armature in a desired position after excitation current is removed from the coil. Although no electrical power or mechanical devices are used, the solenoid has a low tolerance to armature displacement from the equilibrium position.

Easy manual operation of overhead garage doors - A concept

Manually actuated mechanical device easily raises or lowers two-section overhead garage door. Rolamite principle is used to provide controlled but varying rate of ascent or descent. Device is applicable where vertical shielding or baffling needs to be raised or lowered.

Hermetically sealed motion transmitter

Transmitter allows transmission of rotational or single planar arc motion through hermetically sealed chamber without use of dynamic seals or complex mechanisms. Device may interest pressure vessel designers and those who need to isolate equipment from a hostile environment.

Ball bearing protector

Mechanical device for reducing the stresses imposed on ball bearings when bearings are exposed to forces caused by vibration is described. Bearing protector is press fitted on rotor shaft and slip fitted into bearing housing. Bearing stop which contacts inner race stops shaft and bearing when moving along shaft axis and removes load from ball bearings.

Two-axis leveling detector system

Electro-mechanical device for measuring tilt angles in order to establish level base without optical reference is described. Angular displacement is detected by movement of bubble in conducting fluid containing electrode network. Electrical signal causes compensation for small movements in horizontal and vertical planes.

Ball detent mechanism

Mechanical device for providing redundancy for critical operation is described. Operation of equipment and details of construction are discussed. Two illustrations of equipment to show basic and modified configurations are provided.

Energy in the environment and the second law of thermodynamics

The relationship between the consumption of energy by technological cultures and the second law of thermodynamics is discussed. The analysis is based on a description of the operation of a mechanical device which consumes energy. It is concluded that the flow of energy in manifold spontaneous conditions, which play a vital role in the operation of any technological process, remove most of the energy flow path from the control of the operator. It is stated that the increased efficiency of a process can benefit the environment only as much as this efficiency enables the total energy input to be reduced for a given level of production and increasing efficiency cannot meet the problems of an increased rate of energy utilization.
