The Low-Lying Electronic States of LiB

The spectroscopic constants for the triplet and singlet states of LiB below about 30 000/ cm are determined using an internally contracted multireference configuration interaction approach in conjunction with [6s 5p 3d 2f] atomic natural orbital basis sets. The ground state is (sup 3)Pi as found in previous work. No excited triplet states are found to be ideal for characterizing the ground state; the (1)(sup 3)Sigma(sup -) state has a transition energy that is too small for many experimental approaches and the (2)(sup 3)Pi and (3)(sup 3)Pi states have bond lengths that are significantly longer than the ground state, resulting in transition intensities that are spread out over many vibrational levels of the ground state.

The Theoretical Transition Probabilities Between the B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) and the A(sup 3)Sigma(Sup +, sub u), W(sup 3)Delta(sub u), B'(sup 3)Sigma(sup -, sub u) States of N2

The electronic transition moment functions between the B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) and the A(sup 3)Sigma(sup +, sub u), W(sup 3)Delta(sub u), B'(sup 3)Sigma(sup -, sub u) states of N2 are studied using the internally contracted multireference configuration interaction (ICMRCI) method based upon complete active space SCF (CASSCF) reference wave-functions. The dependence of the moments on both the one and n-particle basis sets has been investigated in detail. The calculated radiative lifetimes for the vibrational levels of B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) are in excellent agreement with the most recent measurement of Euler and Pipkin (1983)

The Low-Lying Electronic States of YCu

The spectroscopic constants for the singlet and triplet states of YCu below about 15 000 per centimeter are determined using an internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction approach. These calculations are calibrated by studies of fewer states using higher levels of correlation treatment and/or larger basis sets. The computed T(sub e) values and radiative lifetimes are in reasonable agreement with experiment. The calculations confirm the previous experimental assignment for all but one state, where theory helps resolve between two possible assignments.

On the Reaction of FNO2 with CH3, t-butyl, and C13H21

Theoretical studies are reported for the reaction of FN02 with the radicals CH3, t-butyl, and C13H21, which are templates for the radical site of a hydrogenated diamond surface. All structures axe fully optimized using density functional theory (DFT) based on the B3LYP functional. Calibration calculations axe performed for CH3 + FNO2 using the coupled cluster approach, the the internally contracted multireference configuration. interaction method, and second order perturbation theory based upon complete active space SCF (CASSCF) reference wave function. These calibration calculations support the B3LYP approach for the calculation of bond energies, but show the B3LYP barrier is too low. Combining the calibration calculations with the larger clusters yields our best estimate of a barrier of about 10 kcal/mol. for the reaction of FNO2 with a radical site on hydrogenated diamond.

The low-lying electronic states of LiC

The spectroscopic constants for the doublet and quartet states of LiC below about 30,000/cm are determined using an internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction approach in conjunction with a [6s 5p 3d 2f] atomic natural orbital basis sets. All of the strongly bound states, X(sup 4)(SIGMA)(sup -),(1)(sup 2)(DELTA), (1)(sup 2)(SIGMA)(sup +), and (2)(sup 2) II, very ionic in character. The only bound-bound quartet transition in this energy range is (2)(sup 4)SIGMA(sup -) and Franck-Condon factors, Einstein A values, and lifetimes are reported for this transition.

Theoretical Study of the B(sup 3) Sigma(sup -, sub u) - X(sup3)Sigma(sub g, sup -) and B"(sup 3)Pi(sub u) - X(sup 3)Sigma(sub g, sup -) Band Systems of S(sub 2)

Multireference configuration-interaction (MRCI) wavefunctions and potential energy curves have been calculated for the X(sup 3)Sigma(sub g,sup -), B(sup 3)Sigma(sub u, Sup -) and B"(sup 3)Pi((sub u) states of S(sub 2) using correlation consistent Gaussian basis sets. These wavefunctions are utilized to compute the the transition dipole moments of the B(sup 3)Sigma(sub g, sup -) - X(sup 3) Sigma(sub g, sup -) and B"(sup 3)Pi(sub u) - X(sup 3)Sigma(sub g, sup -) systems. Oscillator strengths, transition probabilities, and radiative lifetimes are computed for the X-B system and comparison is made with experimental data.

A correlated ab initio study of the A2 pi <-- X2 sigma+ transition in MgCCH

The A2 pi <-- X2 sigma+ transition in MgCCH was studied with correlation consistent basis sets and single- and multireference correlation methods. The A2 pi excited state was characterized in detail; the x2 sigma+ ground state has been described elsewhere recently. The estimated complete basis set (CBS) limits for valence correlation, including zero-point energy corrections, are 22668, 23191, and 22795 for the RCCSD(T), MRCI, and MRCI + Q methods, respectively. A core-valence correction of +162 cm-1 shifts the RCCSD(T) value to 22830 cm-1, in good agreement with the experimental result of 22807 cm-1.

Quenching of Excited Na due to He Collisions

The quenching and elastic scattering of excited Sodium by collisions with Helium have been investigated for energies between 10(exp -13) eV and 10 eV. With the ab initio adiabatic potentials and nonadiabatic radial and rotational couplings obtained from multireference single- and double-excitation configuration interaction approach, we carried out scattering calculations by the quantum-mechanical molecular-orbital close-coupling method. Cross sections for quenching reactions and elastic collisions are presented. Quenching and elastic collisional rate coefficients as a function of temperature between 1 micro-K and 10,000 K are also obtained. The results are relevant to modeling non-LTE effects on Na D absorption lines in extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs.
