Magnetic properties of a staggered S = 1 chain with an alternating single-ion anisotropy direction

Materials composed of spin-1 antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains are known to adopt complex ground states that are sensitive to the single-ion-anisotropy (SIA) energy ( D ), and intrachain ( J 0 ) and interchain ( J 1 , 2 ′ ) exchange energy scales. While theoretical and experimental studies have extended this model to include various other energy scales, the effect of the lack of a common SIA axis is not well explored. Here we investigate the magnetic properties of Ni ( pyrimidine ) ( H 2 O ) 2 ( NO 3 ) 2 , a chain compound where the tilting of Ni octahedra leads to a twofold alternation of the easy-axis directions along the chain. Muon-spin relaxation measurements indicate a transition to long-range order at T N = 2.3 K and the magnetic structure is initially determined to be antiferromagnetic and collinear using elastic neutron diffraction experiments. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements were used to find J 0 = 5.107 ( 7 ) K , D = 2.79 ( 1 ) K , J 1 ′ = 0.00 ( 5 ) K , J 2 ′ = 0.18 ( 3 ) K , and a rhombic anisotropy energy E = 0.19 ( 9 ) K . Mean-field modeling reveals that the ground state structure hosts spin canting of ϕ ≈ 6 . 5 ∘ , which is not detectable above the noise floor of the elastic neutron diffraction data. Monte Carlo simulation of the powder-averaged magnetization, M ( H ) , is then used to confirm these Hamiltonian parameters, while single-crystal M ( H ) simulations provide insight into features observed in the data. Complex magnetic properties associated with competing local and itinerant magnetism in \({\text {Pr}}_2 {\text {Co}}_{0.86} {\text {Si}}_{2.88}\)

Ternary intermetallic compound \({\text {Pr}}_2 {\text {Co}}_{0.86} {\text {Si}}_{2.88}\) has been synthesized in single phase and characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) analysis, magnetization, heat capacity, neutron diffraction and muon spin rotation/relaxation ( \(\mu\) SR) measurements. The polycrystalline compound was synthesized in single phase by introducing necessary vacancies in Co/Si sites. Magnetic, heat capacity, and zero-field neutron diffraction studies reveal that the system undergoes magnetic transition below \(\sim\) 4 K. Neutron diffraction measurement further reveals that the magnetic ordering is antiferromagnetic in nature with an weak ordered moment. The high temperature magnetic phase has been attributed to glassy in nature consisting of ferromagnetic clusters of itinerant (3 d ) Co moments as evident by the development of internal field in zero-field \(\mu\) SR below 50 K. The density-functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the low temperature magnetic transition is associated with antiferromagnetic coupling between Pr 4 f and Co 3 d spins. Pr moments show spin fluctuation along with unconventional orbital moment quenching due to crystal field. The evolution of the symmetry and the crystalline electric field environment of Pr-ions are also studied and compared theoretically between the elemental Pr and when it is coupled with other elements such as Co. The localized moment of Pr 4 f and itinerant moment of Co 3 d compete with each other below \(\sim\) 20 K resulting in an unusual temperature dependence of magnetic coercivity in the system.

Photo-excited charge carrier lifetime enhanced by slow cation molecular dynamics in lead iodide perovskite FAPbI3

Using muon spin relaxation measurements on formamidinium lead iodide [FAPbI3, where FA denotes HC(NH2)2], we show that, among the five structurally distinct phases of FAPbI3 exhibited through two different temperature hysteresis, the reorientation motion of FA molecules is quasi-static below ≈50 K over the time scale of 10−6 s in the low-temperature (LT) hexagonal (Hex-LT, <160 K) phase, which has a relatively longer photo-excited charge carrier lifetime (τc∼10−6 s). In contrast, a sharp increase in the FA molecular motion was found above ≈50 K in the Hex-LT phase, LT-tetragonal phase (Tet-LT, <140 K), the high-temperature (HT) hexagonal phase (Hex-HT, 160–380 K), and the HT-tetragonal phase (Tet-HT, 140–280 K), where τc decreases with increasing temperature. More interestingly, the reorientation motion is further promoted in the cubic phase at higher temperatures (>380/280 K), while τc is recovered to comparable or larger than that of the LT phases. These results indicate that there are two factors that determine τc, one related to the local reorientation of cationic molecules that is not unencumbered by phonons and the other to the high symmetry of the bulk crystal structure.

Quasi-One-Dimensional Spin Excitations in the Iron Pnictide NaFe 0.53 ⁢Cu 0.47 ⁢As

Spectroscopic measurements in model 1D correlated systems offer insights for understanding their two-dimensional counterparts, which include the cuprate and iron pnictide/chalcogenide superconductors. A major challenge is the identification of such correlated systems with dominantly 1D physics. Here, in this Letter, inelastic neutron scattering measurements on NaFe 0.53⁢ Cu 0.47 ⁢As single crystal directly reveal quasi-1D spin excitations, resulting from atomic order that leads to magnetic Fe and nonmagnetic Cu chains. The dominant exchange interaction is antiferromagnetic along the chain [𝑆⁢𝐽 ∥ ≈ 90.1⁢(3) meV], whereas the inter-chain couplings are much weaker [𝑆⁢𝐽 ⊥ ≈ −2.4⁢(1) meV and 𝑆⁢𝐽 c ≈ 0.15⁢(5) meV]. The quasi-1D spin excitations in NaFe 0.53 ⁢Cu 0.47⁢ As stem from both the Néel and stripe vectors, with Néel excitations sensitive to Fe impurities on the Cu site. The spin excitations in quasi-1D NaFe 0.53 ⁢Cu 0.47⁢ As and quasi-2D FeSe exhibit a striking resemblance, suggesting a common origin for their coexistent stripe and Néel excitations. Our findings demonstrate magnetic dilution in NaFeAs leads to dimension reduction of its magnetic degree of freedom, presenting a strategy for discovering low-dimensional quantum materials.

Skyrmion lattice manipulation with electric currents and thermal gradients in MnSi

The skyrmion lattice (SkL) in MnSi was studied using small-angle neutron scattering and under the influence of a radial electric current in a Corbino geometry. In response to the applied current, the SkL undergoes an angular reorientation with respect to the MnSi crystal lattice. The reorientation is nonmonotonic with increasing current, with the SkL rotating first in one direction and then the other. The SkL reorientation was studied at different sample locations and found to depend on the local current density as inferred from a finite-element analysis. Here, the nonmonotonic response indicates the presence of two competing effects on the SkL, most likely due to the presence of both radial electric and thermal currents. Such a scenario is supported by micromagnetic simulations, which show how these effects can act constructively or destructively to drive the SkL rotation, depending on the direction of the electric current. In addition, the simulations also suggest how the direction of the skyrmion flow may affect the SkL orientation.

First observation of the production of three massive vector bosons and search for long-lived particles using delayed photons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\text{ TeV}$

This thesis presents the first observation of the production of three massive vector bosons (VVV with V = W, Z) in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=13\text{ TeV}$. The search was performed in final states with two same-sign charged leptons (electrons or muons) plus one or two jets, and three, four, five, or six leptons from WWW, WWZ, WZZ and ZZZ decays, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 collected by the CMS experiment during 2016-2018. The observed (expected) significance of the combined VVV production is 5.7 (5.9) standard deviations, and the production cross section is measured to be 1010$^{+210}_{-200}$(stat) $^{+150}_{-120}$(syst) fb, corresponding to a signal strength of 1.02$^{+0.26}_{-0.23}$. We also found evidence for WWW and for WWZ production, with observed significances of 3.3 and 3.4 standard deviations, respectively. The measured production cross sections for individual VVV processes are also reported. The establishment of VVV production opens a new program of many standard model studies (such as gauge-gauge and Higgs-gauge couplings), and provides a new tool for many new physics searches (such as anomalous gauge coupling searches, new resonance searches). This thesis also reports a search for long-lived supersymmetry particles decaying to photons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV$, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.4 fb -1 collected by CMS during 2016-2017. Results are interpreted with a gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model, where the long-lived particle is a neutralino and the lightest supersymmetry particle is a gravitino. For neutralino proper decay lengths of 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 m, masses up to 320, 525, 360, and 215 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, respectively. This result extends the limits from previous searches by one order of magnitude for the neutralino proper decay length and up to 100 GeV more for the neutralino mass. Motivated by the need for precision timing measurements for long-lived particle searches, as well as for improvements in general object reconstruction performance, the timing performance of two types of sensors are studied in this thesis: one with a Cerium doped Lutetium Yttrium Orthosilicate (LYSO:Ce) crystal as the scintillator and a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) as the photodetector, another with a Cadmium-Telluride sensor as the active material for a sampling calorimeter. Both setups have been demonstrated with test beams to be able to provide timing measurements of particles with a resolution below 30 ps.

Zero-field Hall effect emerging from a non-Fermi liquid in a collinear antiferromagnet V 1/3 NbS 2

Magnetically intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide a versatile three-dimensional (3D) material platform to explore quantum phenomena and functionalities that emerge from an intricate interplay among magnetism, band structure, and electronic correlations. Here, we report the observation of a nearly magnetization-free anomalous Hall effect (AHE) accompanied by non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior and collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM) in V 1/3 NbS 2 . Our single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements identify a commensurate, collinear AFM order formed by intercalated V moments. In the magnetically ordered state, the spontaneous AHE is tenfold greater than expected from empirical scaling with magnetization, and this strongly enhanced AHE arises in the NFL regime that violates the quasiparticle picture. V 1/3 NbS 2 challenges the existing single-particle framework for understanding AHEs based on one-body Berry curvature and highlights the potential of magnetically intercalated TMDs to unveil new electronic functionalities where many-body correlations play a critical role.
