Comprehensive anisotropic linear optical properties of the Weyl semimetals TaAs and NbAs

We report that TaAs and NbAs are two of the earliest identified Weyl semimetals that possess many intriguing optical properties, such as chirality-dependent optical excitations and giant second harmonic generation (SHG). Linear and nonlinear optics have been employed as tools to probe the Weyl physics in these crystals. Here, we extend these studies to address two important aspects: determining the complete anisotropic dielectric response and exploring if and how they can reveal essential Weyl physics. We determine the complete anisotropic dielectric functions of TaAs and NbAs by combining spectroscopic ellipsometry and density functional theory (DFT). Parameterized Lorentz oscillators are reported from 1.2 - 6 eV (experiment) and 0 - 6 eV (DFT), and good agreement is shown between them. Both linear and nonlinear optical properties have been previously reported to reveal Weyl physics. We suggest that strong optical resonances from trivial bands are the likely origin of the large optical SHG previously reported at these energies. Furthermore, by comparing the contribution of a small k -space centered around the Weyl cones with the total linear dielectric function, we find that these contributions are highly anisotropic and are < 25% of the total dielectric function below 0.5 eV; abov1 eV, these contributions are negligible. Thus, the study of Weyl physics using optical techniques requires very low energies, and even there, a careful assessment is required in distinguishing the much smaller contributions of the Weyl bands from the dominant contributions of the trivial bands and Drude response to the total dielectric function.

Crystal Structures, Optical Behavior, and Magnetic Properties in Hydrated Lanthanide Iron Sulfates

Single crystals of LnFe(SO 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm; compounds 1–11) and LnFe(SO 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) (Ln = Tm, Yb, Lu; compounds 12–14) were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis revealed that the dihydrated compounds (1–11) crystallize in centrosymmetric (CS) structures, with the lanthanide ions adopting eight-coordinate geometries. In contrast, the monohydrated compounds (12–14) exhibit noncentrosymmetric (NCS) structures, where the lanthanide ions are seven-coordinated. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) confirmed that compounds 2, 4, and 7–11 are paramagnetic below 400 K, with compound 8 displaying the highest magnetic susceptibility. Compounds 1, 5, 6, 13, and 14 show a sharp increase in magnetic susceptibility at Néel temperatures ( T N ) of approximately 72, 76, 70, 58, and 56 K, respectively, indicating antiferromagnetic ordering. High-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements further support the presence of antiferromagnetic transitions in these compounds. Second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements showed that the noncentrosymmetric Yb (compound 13) and Lu (compound 14) compounds exhibit SHG intensities of 0.3× and 1.6× that of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP), respectively.

Enhanced extreme ultraviolet high-harmonic generation from chromium-doped magnesium oxide

High-order harmonic generation (HHG) from crystals is emerging as a new ultrashort source of coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light. Doping the crystal structure can offer a new way to control the source properties. Here, we present a study of HHG enhancement in the XUV spectral region from an ionic crystal, using dopant-induced vacancy defects, driven by a laser centered at a wavelength of 1.55 μm. Our numerical simulations based on solutions of the semiconductor Bloch equations and density-functional theory are supported by our experimental observations and demonstrate an increase in the XUV high harmonic yield from doped bulk magnesium oxide (MgO) compared to undoped MgO, even at a low defect concentration. The anisotropy of the harmonic emission as a function of the laser polarization shows that the pristine crystal's symmetry is preserved. Our study paves the way toward the control of HHG in solids with complex defects caused by transition-metal doping.

Compositional dependence of linear and nonlinear optical response in crystalline hafnium zirconium oxide thin films

Composition dependence of second harmonic generation, refractive index, extinction coefficient, and optical bandgap in 20 nm thick crystalline Hf 1– x Zr x O 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) thin films is reported here. The refractive index exhibits a general increase with increasing ZrO 2 content with all values within the range of 1.98–2.14 from 880 nm to 400 nm wavelengths. A composition dependence of the indirect optical bandgap is observed, decreasing from 5.81 eV for HfO 2 to 5.17 eV for Hf 0.4 Zr 0.6 O 2 . The bandgap increases for compositions with x > 0.6, reaching 5.31 eV for Hf 0.1 Zr 0.9 O 2 . Second harmonic signals are measured for 880 nm incident light. The magnitude of the second harmonic signal scales with the magnitude of the remanant polarization in the composition series. Film compositions that display near zero remanent polarizations exhibit minimal second harmonic generation while those with maximum remanent polarization also display the largest second harmonic signal. The results are discussed in the context of ferroelectric phase assemblage in the hafnium zirconium oxide films and demonstrate a path toward a silicon-compatible integrated nonlinear optical material.

Revisiting two thiophosphate compounds constituting d 0 transition metal HfP 2 S 6 and d 10 transition metal α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 as multifunctional materials for combining second harmonic generation response and photocurrent response

Two acentric thiophosphate compounds, HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 , are revisited and studied as infrared nonlinear optical materials. HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were structurally characterized without any property measurements. Here, in this work, HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were synthesized via high temperature salt flux reactions. Low-temperature polymorph acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 was purified and grown as mm-sized crystals with the aid of AgBr flux. The AgBr flux was revealed to play an important role in stabilizing the acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 . The acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 transforms to centrosymmetric β-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 at 850(5) K, which is revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and powder X-ray diffraction experiments. HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 are discovered by UV-vis spectrum measurements as indirect bandgap semiconductors with bandgaps of 2.2(1) eV and 2.5(1) eV, respectively, which is supported by DFT calculations and TB-LMTO-ASA calculations. The bonding pictures of α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were studied by crystal orbital Hamilton population calculations (COHP) coupled with electron localization function (ELF) analysis. DFT calculations predict that HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 would exhibit different optical performances regardless of being constructed from identical [P 2 S 6 ] motifs. HfP 2 S 6 exhibits a low second harmonic generation (SHG) response, ~0.21 × AGS (for the sample of particle size of 25 μm). α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 possesses moderate SHG response, ~0.61 × AGS (for the sample of particle size of 225 μm) coupled with a high laser damage threshold (LDT) of ~3.2 × AGS. Characteristics of high ambient stability, moderate bandgap and SHG response, type-I phase-matching capability, and high LDT together with the easy growth of large crystals make α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 attractive for future infrared nonlinear optical applications. Photocurrent measurements found that α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 and β-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 have high photocurrent response, 165 nA cm -2 and 135 nA cm -2 , respectively. α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 is a new multifunctional material of the ternary Ag–P–S system, which combines nonlinear optical (NLO) properties and photocurrent response.

Light-induced shift current vortex crystals in moiré heterobilayers

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) moiré superlattices provide an emerging platform to explore various light-induced phenomena. Recently, the discoveries of novel moiré excitons have attracted great interest. The nonlinear optical responses of these systems are however still underexplored. Here, we report investigation of light-induced shift currents (a second-order response generating DC current from optical illumination) in the WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré superlattice. We identify a striking phenomenon of the formation of shift current vortex crystals—i.e., two-dimensional periodic arrays of moiré-scale current vortices and associated magnetic fields with remarkable intensity under laboratory laser setup. Furthermore, we demonstrate high optical tunability of these current vortices—their location, shape, chirality, and magnitude can be tuned by the frequency, polarization, and intensity of the incident light. Electron-hole interactions (excitonic effects) are found to play a crucial role in the generation and nature of the shift current intensity and distribution. Our findings provide a promising all-optical control route to manipulate nanoscale shift current density distributions and magnetic field patterns, as well as shed light on nonlinear optical responses in moiré quantum matter and their possible applications.

Magnetic Properties and Large Second-Harmonic Generation Response of a Chiral Ternary Chalcogenide: Eu 2 SiSe 4

Eu(II)-containing chalcogenides are an emerging class of materials that are of great interest due to their high optical activity and intriguing magnetism. Here, we synthesized Eu 2 SiSe 4 as red-colored single crystals and characterized its structure with single-crystal X-ray diffraction, confirming the reported chiral monoclinic P2 1 symmetry at room temperature. The crystal structure of Eu 2 SiSe 4 comprises distorted SiSe 4 tetrahedral units and charge-balancing Eu(II) cations. Here, we develop a two-step solid-state synthesis method for Eu 2 SiSe 4 and compare it to the known boron chalcogenide method. We find the second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity of polycrystalline Eu 2 SiSe 4 to be ∼7 × AgGaS 2 , placing it among the highest-known SHG-active chalcogenides. No symmetry lowering is observed down to 100 K in single-crystal X-ray diffraction, although an anomalous expansion in the b-axis lattice parameter occurs and may be correlated to lattice modes of the SiSe 4 tetrahedra. We investigate the physical properties of Eu 2 SiSe 4 using magnetometry and heat capacity measurements and find a transition to an antiferromagnetic ground state at T N ≈ 5.5 K. The low-temperature transition releases less entropy than expected, which may be due to the complex crystal electric field effects of Eu(II).

Large Enhancements in Optical and Piezoelectric Properties in Ferroelectric Zn 1- x Mg x O Thin Films through Engineering Electronic and Ionic Anharmonicities

Multifunctionality as a paradigm requires materials exhibiting multiple superior properties. Integrating second-order optical nonlinearity and large bandgap with piezoelectricity can, for example, enable broadband, strain-tunable photonics. Though very different phenomena at distinct frequencies, both second-order optical nonlinearity and piezoelectricity are third-rank polar tensors present only in acentric crystal structures. However, simultaneously enhancing both phenomena is highly challenging since it involves competing effects with tradeoffs. Recently, a large switchable ferroelectric polarization of ≈80 μC cm –2 was reported in Zn 1-x Mg x O films. Here, ferroelectric Zn 1-x Mg x O is demonstrated to be a platform that hosts simultaneously a 30% increase in the electronic bandgap, a 50% enhancement in the second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients, and a near 200% improvement in the piezoelectric coefficients over pure ZnO. These enhancements are shown to be due to a 400% increase in the electronic anharmonicity and a ≈200% decrease in the ionic anharmonicity with Mg substitution. Precisely controllable periodic ferroelectric domain gratings are demonstrated down to 800 nm domain width, enabling ultraviolet quasi-phase-matched optical harmonic generation as well as domain-engineered piezoelectric devices.

Femtojoule optical nonlinearity for deep learning with incoherent illumination

Optical neural networks (ONNs) are a promising computational alternative for deep learning due to their inherent massive parallelism for linear operations. However, the development of energy-efficient and highly parallel optical nonlinearities, a critical component in ONNs, remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we introduce a nonlinear optical microdevice array (NOMA) compatible with incoherent illumination by integrating the liquid crystal cell with silicon photodiodes at the single-pixel level. We fabricate NOMA with more than half a million pixels, each functioning as an optical analog of the rectified linear unit at ultralow switching energy down to 100 femtojoules per pixel. With NOMA, we demonstrate an optical multilayer neural network. Our work holds promise for large-scale and low-power deep ONNs, computer vision, and real-time optical image processing.

Second-order microscopic nonlinear susceptibility in a centrosymmetric material: application to imaging valence electron motion

We report measurements of phase-matched nonlinear x-ray and optical sum-frequency generation from single-crystal silicon using sub-resonant 0.95 eV laser pulses and 9.5 keV hard x-ray pulses from the LCLS free-electron laser. The sum-frequency signal appears as energy and momentum sidebands to the elastic Bragg peak. It is proportional to the magnitude squared of the relevant temporal and spatial Fourier components of the optically induced microscopic charges/currents. We measure the first- and second-order sideband to the 220 Bragg peak and find that the efficiency is maximized when the applied field is along the reciprocal lattice vector. For an optical intensity of $\sim10^{12} \text{W}/\text{cm}^2$, we measure peak efficiencies of $3\times 10^{-7}$ and $3\times 10^{-10}$ for the first and second-order sideband respectively (relative to the elastic Bragg peak). The first-order sideband is consistent with induced microscopic currents along the applied electric field (consistent with an isotropic response). The second-order sideband depends nontrivially on the optical field orientation and is consistent with an anisotropic response originating from induced charges along the bonds with C$_{3v}$ site symmetry. The results agree well with first-principles Bloch-Floquet calculations.

Enhanced second-harmonic generation from WS 2 /ReSe 2 heterostructure

Van der Waals stacking presents new opportunities for nonlinear optics with its remarkable tunability and scalability. However, the fundamental role of interlayer interactions in modifying the overall nonlinear optical susceptibilities remains elusive. In this work, we report anisotropic enhancement of second-harmonic generation (SHG) from a WS 2 /ReSe 2 heterobilayer, where the individual composite layers possess distinctive crystal phases. We investigate polarization-resolved response and twist-angle dependence in SHG and reveal that band alignment alone is insufficient to explain the observed anisotropy in the modified SHG response. Spectral shifts in excitonic features highlight band renormalization, supporting the role of hybridization between the two layers. Furthermore, SHG enhancement is highly anisotropic and can even be suppressed in some orientations, suggesting possible intensity-borrowing mechanisms within the heterostructure. Our work demonstrates the ability to tune both the intensity and polarization dependence of nonlinear optical responses with van der Waals stacking of distinctive crystal phases.

Plasmon-enhanced optical nonlinearity in graphene nanomeshes

Using the density-matrix formalism, here we show that graphene nanomeshes (GNMs)—graphene sheets patterned with antidots—have large plasmon-enhanced nonlinear optical response. GNMs can be designed to behave as quasi-one-dimensional plasmonic crystals in which plasmons with large propagation lengths are efficiently excited. The associated third-order Kerr and third-harmonic-generation susceptibility can be as high as 10 –7 and 10 –9 m 2 V –2 , respectively, over the mid-to-near-infrared frequency range. Furthermore, carrier-density tuning in GNMs can flip the propagation direction of plasmonic waves and enables bidirectional switching of optical signals.

Optical second harmonic generation in anisotropic multilayers with complete multireflection of linear and nonlinear waves using ♯SHAARP.ml package

Abstract Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is a nonlinear optical effect widely used for nonlinear optical microscopy and laser frequency conversion. Closed-form analytical solution of the nonlinear optical responses is essential for evaluating materials whose optical properties are unknown a priori. A recent open-source code, ♯SHAARP. si , can provide such closed form solutions for crystals with arbitrary symmetries, orientations, and anisotropic properties at a single interface. However, optical components are often in the form of slabs, thin films on substrates, and multilayer heterostructures with multiple reflections of both the fundamental and up to ten different SHG waves at each interface, adding significant complexity. Many approximations have therefore been employed in the existing analytical approaches, such as slowly varying approximation, weak reflection of the nonlinear polarization, transparent medium, high crystallographic symmetry, Kleinman symmetry, easy crystal orientation along a high-symmetry direction, phase matching conditions and negligible interference among nonlinear waves, which may lead to large errors in the reported material properties. To avoid these approximations, we have developed an open-source package named Second Harmonic Analysis of Anisotropic Rotational Polarimetry in Multilayers (♯SHAARP. ml ). The reliability and accuracy are established by experimentally benchmarking with both the SHG polarimetry and Maker fringes using standard and commonly used nonlinear optical materials as well as twisted 2-dimensional heterostructures.

Lanthanide thioborates, an emerging class of nonlinear optical materials, efficiently synthesized using the boron–chalcogen mixture method

Here, the Boron–Chalcogen Mixture method was used to obtain single crystals of the previously extremely difficult to synthesize lanthanide orthothioborates to investigate their structures and their structurally connected optical behavior, such as second harmonic generation. Using a combined halide and polychalcogenide flux, the BCM method yielded single crystals of LnBS 3 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd), which are isostructural and crystallize in the non-centrosymmetric space group, Pna2 1 . Second harmonic generation measurements confirmed the expectation that LaBS 3 would exhibit a strong SHG response, measured at 1.5 × KDP.

Methods for microwave characterization of electro-optic crystals for quantum transduction

Microwave-optic quantum transducers are essential devices to develop distributed quantum networks and implement related quantum communication protocols. Three dimensional high-coherence time microwave cavities embedded with electro-optic nonlinear dielectric materials provide promising platforms to boost the efficiency of the microwave-optic frequency conversion. However, so far, the properties for such dielectric crystals operating at milli-Kelvin cryogenic temperatures have not been well understood. Here, we propose a scheme to precisely measure and benchmark the dielectric constant and analyze the dissipation mechanisms of electro-optic materials, such as Lithium Niobate, at the quantum threshold. We will use Fermilab’s three dimensional superconducting cavities with long coherence time. The proposed method of microwave characterization lays the foundations for engineering quantum transduction devices and quantum sensors with high conversion efficiency and fidelity.

Joint Experimental and Computational Characterization of Sum-Frequency Generation between a Continuous Wave Laser and an Ultrafast Frequency Comb Laser for Tunable Laser Development

Ultrafast optical frequency combs allow for both high spectral and temporal resolution in molecular spectroscopy and have become a powerful tool in many areas of chemistry and physics. Ultrafast lasers and frequency combs generated from ultrafast mode-locked lasers often need to be converted to other wavelengths. Commonly used wavelength conversions are optical parametric oscillators, which require an external optical cavity, and supercontinuum generation combined with optical parametric amplifiers. Whether commercial or home-built, these systems are complex and costly. Here, we investigate an alternative, simple, and easy-to-implement approach to tunable frequency comb ultrafast lasers enabled by new continuous-wave laser technology. Sum-frequency generation between an Nd:YAG continuous-wave laser and a Yb:fiber femtosecond frequency comb in a beta-barium borate (BBO) crystal is explored. The resulting sum-frequency beam is a pulsed frequency comb with the same repetition rate as the Yb:fiber source. SNLO simulation software is used to simulate the results and provide benchmarks for designing future systems to achieve wavelength conversion and tunability in otherwise difficult-to-reach spectral regions.

Growth of Large‐Sized 2D Ultrathin SnSe Crystals with In‐Plane Ferroelectricity

Abstract Tin (II) selenide (SnSe) is an emerging 2D material with many intriguing properties, such as record‐high thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT), purely in‐plane ferroelectricity, and excellent nonlinear optical properties. To explore these functional properties and related applications, a crucial step is to develop controllable routes to synthesize large‐area, ultrathin, and high‐quality SnSe crystals. Physical vapor deposition (PVD) constitutes a reliable method to synthesize 2D SnSe, however, effects of various growth parameters have not yet been systematically investigated, and current PVD‐synthesized flakes are often thick (>10 nm) with small lateral sizes (<10 µm). In this work, high‐quality 2D SnSe crystals are synthesized via low‐pressure PVD, which display in‐plane ferroelectric domains observed by piezoresponse force microscopy and polarization‐dependent reflection spectroscopy. Detailed studies regarding the roles of various parameters are further carried out, including substrate pre‐annealing, growth duration, temperature, and pressure, which enable to rationally optimize the growth and obtain 2D SnSe crystals with lateral sizes up to ≈23.0 µm and thicknesses down to ≈2.0 nm (3–4 layers). This work paves the way for the controlled growth of large‐area 2D SnSe, facilitating the future exploration of many interesting multiferroic properties and applications with atomic thickness.
