Similarity solutions of some two-space-dimensional nonlinear wave evolution equations

Similarity reductions of the two-space-dimensional versions of the Korteweg-de Vries, modified Korteweg-de Vries, Benjamin-Davis-Ono, and nonlinear Schroedinger equations are presented, and some solutions of the reduced equations are discussed. Exact dispersive solutions of the two-dimensional Korteweg-de Vries equation are obtained, and the similarity solution of this equation is shown to be reducible to the second Painleve transcendent.

Magnetar Bursts Due to Alfvén Wave Nonlinear Breakout

The most common form of magnetar activity is short X-ray bursts, with durations from milliseconds to seconds, and luminosities ranging from 10 36 –10 43 erg s -1 . Recently, an X-ray burst from the galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 was detected to be coincident with two fast radio burst (FRB) like events from the same source, providing evidence that FRBs may be linked to magnetar bursts. Using fully 3D force-free electrodynamics simulations, we show that such magnetar bursts may be produced by Alfvén waves launched from localized magnetar quakes: a wave packet propagates to the outer magnetosphere, becomes nonlinear, and escapes the magnetosphere, forming an ultra-relativistic ejecta. The ejecta pushes open the magnetospheric field lines, creating current sheets behind it. Magnetic reconnection can happen at these current sheets, leading to plasma energization and X-ray emission. The angular size of the ejecta can be compact, ≲1 sr if the quake launching region is small, ≲0.01 sr at the stellar surface. We discuss implications for the FRBs and the coincident X-ray burst from SGR 1935+2154.

Dissipative effects on nonlinear waves in rotating fluids.

Modifications to the existing inviscid theory of long-wave propagation in rotating fluids are studied. A modification to the Korteweg-deVries equation is found to describe weak dissipation in long waves in a swirling fluid. General features of solutions are discussed, and a solution for the damping of solitary waves is presented.

Nonlinear waves in a rate-sensitive, elastoplastic material.

Discussion of two classes of closed form solutions of one-dimensional, unsteady motion of a rate-sensitive elastoplastic material. One class of these solutions is self-similar and is deduced from the invariant theorems of continuous groups of transformations. The second class of solutions is obtained by searching for one-dimensional wave motions with constant speeds of propagation. Applications of these solutions to unsteady motions behind propagating discontinuities are considered.

Nonlinear wave choked inlets

The quasi-one dimensional flow program was modified in two ways. The Runge-Kutta subroutine was replaced with a subroutine which used a modified divided difference form of the Adams Pece method and the matrix inversion routine was replaced with a pseudo inverse routine. Calculations were run using both the original and modified programs. Comparison of the calculations showed that the original Runge-Kutta routine could not detect singularity near the throat and was integrating across it. The modified version was able to detect the singularity and therefore gave more valid calculations.

Nonlinear wave interactions in swept wing flows

An analysis is presented which examines the modulation of different instability modes satisfying the triad resonance condition in time and space in a three-dimensional boundary layer flow. Detuning parameters are used for the wave numbers and the frequencies. The nonparallelism of the mean flow is taken into account in the analysis. At the leading-edge region of an infinite swept wing, different resonant triads are investigated that are comprised of travelling crossflow, vertical vorticity and Tollmein-Schlichting modes. The spatial evolution of the resonating triad components are studied.

Nonlinear wave interactions and evolution of a ring-beam distribution of energetic electrons

A ring-beam distribution function of moderately relativistic electrons is unstable to electromagnetic and electrostatic waves. The results obtained in numerical simulations show that electromagnetic radiation corresponding to the normal modes of the background plasma is observed to grow even in the presence of a strong electrostatic instability and becomes very strong when the growth of the electrostatic Langmuir waves is minimized, and that the instability process is best described as a beam cyclotron resonance. Another strong radiation generated by the ring beam is the Z mode which is coupled to the electrostatic Langmuir wave. Under certain circumstances, these mechanisms may be significant in astrophysical situations.

Nonlinear Waves in Magnetized Accretion Disks

Time-dependent accretion for a magnetized disk can exhibit short timescale outbursts of high-power jets associated with bursts of disk radiation. The burst of energy in jets can produce outward propagating disturbances in preexisting (+/- z) jet flows. the disturbances are strong and can be expected to steepen and form strong shock waves. The strong linear polarization (up to approximately 30%) and large polarization position angle changes (90 deg and more) seen in the optical outbursts of some quasars clearly indicate synchrotron radiation, and this component of the radiation is probably associated with the burst in jet energy in the present model.

Nonlinear Waves and Particle Heating in the Auroral Ionosphere

In the two year period, the researchers have developed innovative 2-D simulation codes for modeling the interaction between electron beams and plasma waves and particles in the auroral ionosphere. These new simulations include kinetic wave particles as well as wave-wave interactions near and above approximately 500 km. The principal numerical model consists of partial-differential equations which evolve large amplitude magnetized 2-D Langmuir waves self-consistently with the electron distribution function. Progress was also made in developing 2-D Particle in Cell (PIC) codes.

Unified Models of Turbulence and Nonlinear Wave Evolution in the Extended Solar Corona and Solar Wind

The PI (Cranmer) and Co-I (A. van Ballegooijen) made substantial progress toward the goal of producing a unified model of the basic physical processes responsible for solar wind acceleration. The approach outlined in the original proposal comprised two complementary pieces: (1) to further investigate individual physical processes under realistic coronal and solar wind conditions, and (2) to extract the dominant physical effects from simulations and apply them to a 1D model of plasma heating and acceleration. The accomplishments in Year 2 are divided into these two categories: 1a. Focused Study of Kinetic Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Turbulence. lb. Focused Study of Non - WKB Alfven Wave Rejection. and 2. The Unified Model Code. We have continued the development of the computational model of a time-study open flux tube in the extended corona. The proton-electron Monte Carlo model is being tested, and collisionless wave-particle interactions are being included. In order to better understand how to easily incorporate various kinds of wave-particle processes into the code, the PI performed a detailed study of the so-called "Ito Calculus", i.e., the mathematical theory of how to update the positions of particles in a probabilistic manner when their motions are governed by diffusion in velocity space.

Effect of Forcing Function on Nonlinear Acoustic Standing Waves

Nonlinear acoustic standing waves of high amplitude have been demonstrated by utilizing the effects of resonator shape to prevent the pressure waves from entering saturation. Experimentally, nonlinear acoustic standing waves have been generated by shaking an entire resonating cavity. While this promotes more efficient energy transfer than a piston-driven resonator, it also introduces complicated structural dynamics into the system. Experiments have shown that these dynamics result in resonator forcing functions comprised of a sum of several Fourier modes. However, previous numerical studies of the acoustics generated within the resonator assumed simple sinusoidal waves as the driving force. Using a previously developed numerical code, this paper demonstrates the effects of using a forcing function constructed with a series of harmonic sinusoidal waves on resonating cavities. From these results, a method will be demonstrated which allows the direct numerical analysis of experimentally generated nonlinear acoustic waves in resonators driven by harmonic forcing functions.

Nonlinear evolution of astrophysical Alfven waves

Nonlinear Alfven waves were studied using the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation as a model. The evolution of initial conditions, such as envelope solitons, amplitude-modulated waves, and band-limited noise was investigated. The last two furnish models for naturally occurring Alfven waves in an astrophysical plasma. A collapse instability in which a wave packet becomes more intense and of smaller spatial extent was analyzed. It is argued that this instability leads to enhanced plasma heating. In studies in which the waves are amplified by an electron beam, the instability tends to modestly inhibit wave growth.
