IMPACT-01 Assembly Overview [Slides]

The Irradiated Material Properties Accelerated Characterization Test (IMPACT) series of experiments will irradiate three metallic fuel alloy specimens with embedded thermal conductivity probes in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). Metallic fuel alloys have long been under investigation for use in advanced reactors on account of their high thermal conductivity. Metallic fuel undergoes dramatic microstructural changes early in life due to fission gas swelling until ~2-3 at% burnup when pores interconnect, thus allowing fission gas to escape into the fuel pin plenum and swelling effectively ceases. The evolution of metallic fuel thermal conductivity during this early phase has never been successfully measured in situ. This experiment will be designed to use advances in measurement sciences to characterize how thermal transport properties evolve while in reactor. The IMPACT experiment consists of three metallic fuel rodlets with thermal conductivity probes axially centered within the fuel specimen. This presentation is an overview of the IMPACT-01 assembly process with a focus MFC fuel fabrication and experiment assembly steps.

Design Overview of the Strong Hadron Cooler ERL at the Electron-Ion Collider

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is currently under development to be built at Brookhaven National Lab and requires cooling during collisions in order to preserve the quality of the hadron beam despite degradation due to intra-beam scattering and beam-beam effect. An Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) is being designed to deliver the necessary electron beam for Coherent electron Cooling (CeC) of the hadron beam, with an electron bunch charge of 1 nC and an average current of 100 mA; two modes of operation are being developed for 150 and 55 MeV electrons, corresponding to 275 and 100 GeV protons. The injector of this Strong Hadron Cooler ERL (SHC-ERL) is shared with the Injection Cooler ERL, which cools lower energy proton beams via bunched beam cooling, as used in the Low Energy RHIC electron Cooling (LEReC). This talk introduces the layout and presents a high-level overview of the design.

Overview of Fish Passage Facilities at Hydropower Developments across the Conterminous United States

This dataset contains geo-referenced information on the presence and types of fish passage facilities at hydropower developments across the conterminous United States (CONUS) presented in the ORNL Hydropower Fish Passage Database Webmap (https://www.ornl.gov/project/quantifying-national-fish-passage-data/webmap). It was developed through collaborative partnerships with fish passage engineers and biologists at both the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and hydropower experts at the Low Impact Hydropower Institute (LIHI). Information contained within this dataset has been provided by many different sources, including State and Federal resource management agencies, non-governmental organizations, hydropower industry members, and published datasets=. This dataset is intended to provide a high-level overview of the distribution of fish passage infrastructure at hydropower developments across CONUS; a more comprehensive database is anticipated to be released later in 2025. This dataset contains one data file in comma-separate (*.csv) format and the information within it was last updated on 24 March 2025.

Overview on the theory and phenomenology of generalized parton distributions

We give a brief overview on the theory and phenomenology of generalized parton distributions (GPDs), including the recently developed framework of single-diffractive hard exclusive process for matching GPDs to experimental observables. We concentrate on the extraction of GPDs from experimental processes, especially on the challenges and potential solutions regarding the separation of different GPDs and the extraction of $x$-dependence of GPDs, which is critically important for constructing the tomographic images and matching the $x$-moments of GPDs to various emergent hadron properties.

An Overview of Electric Vehicle Load Modeling Strategies for Grid Integration Studies

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has emerged as a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, which has motivated the implementation of public policies to promote their use in several countries. However, the high adoption of EVs poses challenges for the electricity sector, as it would imply an increase in energy demand and possible impacts on the power quality (PQ) of the power grid. Therefore, it is important to conduct EV integration studies in the power grid to determine the amount that can be incorporated without causing problems and identify the areas of the power sector that will require reinforcements. Accurate EV load patterns are required for this type of study that, through mathematical modeling, reflect both the dynamic behavior and the factors that influence the decision to recharge EVs. This article aims to present an overview of EVs, examine the different factors considered in the literature for modeling EV load patterns, and review modeling methods. EV load modeling methods are classified into deterministic, statistical, and machine learning. The article shows that each modeling method has its advantages, disadvantages, and data requirements, ranging from simple load modeling to more accurate models requiring large datasets.

WRF Simulation Data for LASSO-CACTI Overview Paper

A portion of the LASSO-CACTI simulation output was used in writing the LASSO-CACTI overview paper, which has been submitted to Geoscientific Model Development as of November 2025 by Gustafson et al. This product contains YAML files to be used in conjunction with the LASSO-CACTI Bundle Browser to download the specific WRF data used with each figure in the paper. This reduces the overall data downloaded so that the entire 2 PB data set is not needed.

HydroGEN Overview: A Consortium on Advanced Water Splitting Materials

HydroGEN (https://www.h2awsm.org/) Energy Materials Network (EMN) is an U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) EERE Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO)-funded consortium that aims to accelerate the discovery and development of advanced water splitting materials (AWSM) for clean, low-cost hydrogen production. This is in line with the H2@Scale initiative (https://www.energy.gov/eere/fuelcells/h2-scale), with the goal to meet U.S. DOE's Hydrogen Shot production cost target of $1/kg H2 within 1 decade. Materials innovations are key to enhancing performance, durability, and cost of hydrogen generation technologies. Large scale, low cost hydrogen from diverse domestic resources can enable an economically competitive and environmentally beneficial future energy system across multiple sectors. HydroGEN is focused on low technology readiness level AWS technologies, including low- (alkaline exchanged membrane electrolysis) and high-temperature electrolysis (proton-conducting solid oxide electrolysis), photoelectrochecmical (PEC) and solar thermochemical (STCH) water splitting. This presentation will provide an overview of the HydroGEN EMN and technical highlights of a few lab-led and FOA-awarded R&D projects. HydroGEN continues to grow its community of industry, university, and national laboratories, forming a national innovation ecosystem focused on renewable hydrogen production.

Overview of Shielding Analyses at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Spallation Neutron Source Second Target Station

The Neutronics Group of the Second Target Station project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is responsible for all neutronics analyses related to design and construction. This paper provides an overview of four neutronics analyses performed for the Second Target Station project, which is representative of all the ongoing work but especially tasks related to shielding. These analyses extend from the proton accelerator through the target monolith and bunker to the end of a neutron beamline. Each example highlights the tools and methods the Neutronics Group uses for analysis. The primary tool is the Monte Carlo radiation transport code MCNP 6.2, but this is augmented by other codes that supplement the input of MCNP. The other codes specifically highlighted in this paper include Attila4MC, ADVANTG, and AARE.
