Accelerating Deployment of Distributed Photovoltaics in Partner Countries

There is a significant opportunity to help developing countries quickly augment DPV programs, and a wealth of international experience and expertise to draw upon to do so. USAID has launched a multi-year program to assist countries across the DPV spectrum. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is supporting USAID (and drawing on Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and others) in developing and implementing pilot projects in selected USAID partner countries, collaborating with these countries to accelerate DPV market development.

Probing an MeV-scale scalar boson in association with a TeV-Scale top-quark partner at the LHC

Searches for new low-mass matter and mediator particles have actively been pursued at fixed target experiments and at e + e - colliders. It is challenging at the CERN LHC, but they have been searched for in Higgs boson decays and in B meson decays by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, as well as in a low transverse momentum phenomena from forward scattering processes (e.g., FASER). We propose a search for a new scalar particle in association with a heavy vector-like quark. We consider the scenario in which the top quark (t) couples to a light scalar φ' and a heavy vector-like top quark T. We examine single and pair production of T in pp collisions, resulting in a final state with a top quark that decays purely hadronically, a T which decays semileptonically (T → W + b → ℓ ν b), and a φ' that is very boosted and decays to a pair of collimated photons which can be identified as a merged photon system. The proposed search is expected to achieve a discovery reach with signal significance greater than 5σ (3σ) for m(T) as large as 1.8 (2) TeV and m(φ') as small as 1 MeV, assuming an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb -1 . This search can expand the reach of T, and demonstrates that the LHC can probe low-mass, MeV-scale particles.

Partners for life: building microbial consortia for the future

We report new technologies have allowed researchers to better design, build, and analyze complex consortia. These developments are fueling a wider implementation of consortium-based bioprocessing by leveraging synthetic biology, delivering on the field’s multitudinous promises of higher efficiencies, superior resiliency, augmented capabilities, and modular bioprocessing. Here we chronicle current progress by presenting a range of screening, computational, and biomolecular tools enabling robust population control, efficient division of labor, and programmatic spatial organization; furthermore, we detail corresponding advancements in areas including machine learning, biocontainment, and standardization. Additionally, we show applications in myriad sectors, including medicine, energy and waste sustainability, chemical production, agriculture, and biosensors. Concluding remarks outline areas of growth that will promote the utilization of complex community structures across the biotechnology spectrum.

Your Best Single-Junction Solar Cell Does Not Always Make an Efficient Tandem Partner

Tandem solar cells, where multiple single-junction cells are combined optically in series, provide a path to making cells with high areal efficiencies, with multiple material systems capable of achieving greater than 30% efficiency under 1-sun conditions. However, there are many different material combinations and configurations used to make a tandem, and it can be challenging to understand how advances in one material system will impact the performance of a tandem device. Here, we have built an open-source calculator based on the spectral efficiency metric proposed by Yu et al. to easily enable calculation of spectral efficiency for single junctions and predicted maximum efficiency of tandem pairs, accounting for different optical and electrical coupling between the top and bottom junctions.

Disordered-to-ordered transitions in assembly factors allow the complex II catalytic subunit to switch binding partners

Complex II (CII) activity controls phenomena that require crosstalk between metabolism and signaling, including neurodegeneration, cancer metabolism, immune activation, and ischemia-reperfusion injury. CII activity can be regulated at the level of assembly, a process that leverages metastable assembly intermediates. The nature of these intermediates and how CII subunits transfer between metastable complexes remains unclear. In this work, we identify metastable species containing the SDHA subunit and its assembly factors, and we assign a preferred temporal sequence of appearance of these species during CII assembly. Structures of two species show that the assembly factors undergo disordered-to-ordered transitions without the appearance of significant secondary structure. The findings identify that intrinsically disordered regions are critical in regulating CII assembly, an observation that has implications for the control of assembly in other biomolecular complexes.

Small partners, big impacts

Bioactive metabolites mediate interactions between hosts and their microbiomes, often to improve the fitness of the holobionts. However, the mechanistic basis of these interactions and their contributions to fitness are poorly understood owing to their multifaceted nature. Finally, recent studies integrating metabolomics with genomic and functional data are beginning to fill this gap.
