An electrically scanned pushbroom phased antenna array is described for a microwave radiometer which can provide agriculturally meaningful measurements of soil moisture. The antenna size of 100 meters at 1400 MHz or 230 meters at 611 MHz requires several shuttle launches and orbital assembly. Problems inherent to the size of the structure and specific instrument problems are discussed as well as the preliminary design.
Accomplishments and future plans are described for the following areas: (1) geology - geobotanical indicators and geopotential data; (2) modeling magnetic fields; (3) modeling the structure, composition, and evolution of the Earth's crust; (4) global and regional motions of the Earth's crust and earthquake occurrence; (5) modeling geopotential from satellite tracking data; (6) modeling the Earth's gravity field; (7) global Earth dynamics; (8) sea surface topography, ocean dynamics; and geophysical interpretation; (9) land cover and land use; (10) physical and remote sensing attributes important in detecting, measuring, and monitoring agricultural crops; (11) prelaunch studies using LANDSAT D; (12) the multispectral linear array; (13) the aircraft linear array pushbroom radiometer; and (14) the spaceborne laser ranging system.
An experimental pushbroom scan sensor, the Multispectral Resource Sampler (MRS), being developed by NASA for a future earth orbiting flight is presented. This sensor will provide new earth survey capabilities beyond those of current sensor systems, with a ground resolution of 15 m over a swath width of 15 km in four bands. The four arrays are aligned on a common focal surface requiring no beamsplitters, thus causing a spatial separation on the ground which requires computer processing to register the bands. Along track pointing permits stereo coverage at variable base/height ratios and atmospheric correction experiments, while across track pointing will provide repeat coverage, from a Landsat-type orbit, of every 1 to 3 days. The MRS can be used for experiments in crop discrimination and status, rock discrimination, land use classification, and forestry.
The classification of targets viewed by a pushbroom type multiple band spectral scanner by algorithms suitable for implementation in high speed online digital circuits is considered. A class of algorithms suitable for use with a pipelined classifier is investigated through simulations based on observed data from agricultural targets. It is shown that time distribution of target types is an important determining factor in classification efficiency.
The recommended design configuration for the focal plane array of a 1,000 element linear pushbroom system consists of 32 modules; the complete configuration is built by butting together two 1024 linear arrays. Each of the linear arrays is formed by edge butting 16 modules together. By staggering the modules of the two rows, the channel outages which occur where the modules are edge butted can be eliminated. Two stages TDI operation is performed by the post processing electronics, which reduces the design complexity of the focal plane. Systems studies show that: (1) a single focal plane design can satisfy both the LEO and SEOS mission configurations; (2) available optical designs can meet mission goals; (3) MTF can be traded with optical complexity in a future study; (4) a chopping mechanism can be devised to modifying modulate radiation to a 4-inch focal plane as well as insert two calibration sources at the required frequencies for chopping and calibration; (5) radiative cooling technology should be suitable for a future sensor in either mission configuration; and (6) cold shielding is not a requirement.
A new airborne Linear Array Pushbroom Radiometer (LAPR-II) was built. LAPR-II will use linear arrays of silicon detectors to acquire four channels of digital image data for spectral bands within the visible and near infrared portions of the spectrum (0.4 - 1.0 micrometers). The data will be quantized to 10 bits, and spectral filters for each channel will be changeable in flight. The instrument will initially be flown aboard a NASA/Wallops' aircraft, and off nadir pointing of LAPR-II will be possible. Together, the instrument and its platform will provide a flexible readily available source of digital image data for scientific experiments. If LAPR-II is to serve as a precise scientific instrument, the instrument's characteristics must be quantitatively described and the data must be calibrated with respect to absolute radiometric units. The LAPR-II is described and the work required to characterize the instrument's spectral response, radiometric response, and spatial resolution and to calibrate the response from the many detectors per array is outlined.
Strips of ground control can be established with current and future satellite sensors. These can provide precise and reliable geometric references for locating and correcting satellite image data and to support temporal image registration. This paper briefly describes the concept and approach for implementing this data base called a Ground Control Strip, and recommends additional work. The advent of new solid state imaging systems, in particular the linear array detectors (pushbroom sensors), make this new concept particularly attractive and practical.
A substantial technology base of solid state pushbroom sensors exists and is in the process of further evolution at both GSFC and JPL. Technologies being developed relate to short wave infrared (SWIR) detector arrays; HgCdTe hybrid detector arrays; InSb linear and area arrays; passive coolers; spectral beam splitters; the deposition of spectral filters on detector arrays; and the functional design of the shuttle/space platform imaging spectrometer (SIS) system. Spatial and spectral characteristics of field, aircraft and space multispectral sensors are summaried. The status, field of view, and resolution of foreign land observing systems are included.
A major requirement of multispectral imaging systems for advanced Earth remote sensing is the provision for greater spectral resolution and more versatile spectral band selection. The imaging spectrometer instrument concept provides this versatility by the combination of pushbroom imaging and spectrally dispersing optics using area array detectors in the focal plane. The shuttle imaging spectrometer concept achieves 10- and 20-meter ground instantaneous fields of view with 20-nanometer spectral resolution from Earth Orbit. Onboard processing allows the selection of spectral bands during flight; this, in turn, permits the sensor parameters to be tailored to the experiment objectives. Advances in optical design, infrared detector arrays, and focal plane cooling indicate the feasibility of the instrument concept and support the practicability of a validation flight experiment for the shuttle in the late 1980s.
The fabrication of airborne instruments is contributing to the development of multispectral linear array technology at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The linear array pushbroom radiometer (LAPR-I), was built to demonstrate capabilities for acquiring digital image data using linear arrays. The LAPR-I employed three arrays of 512 silicon photodiodes each to simultaneously acquire three channels of data for spectral bands within the visible and near-infrared portions of the spectrum. A second instrument, LAPR-II, uses four arrays each consisting of 512 silicon detectors. A filter wheel containing six spectral filters is used in conjunction with each array to allow filter changes in flight. This capability will facilitate studies into the utility of various bands within the visible and near infrared portions of the spectrum. The LAPR-II's aircraft mounting will allow off-nadir pointing (plus-or-minus 50 deg fore-and-aft and side-to-side) which will enable investigations of the radiometric and geometric effects of off-nadir viewing. A short wave infrared radiometer is also described.
The conceptual design of a Mechanically Scanned Deployable Antenna which is launched by the STS (Space Shuttle) to provide radiometric brightness temperature maps of the Earth and oceans at selected frequency bands in the frequency range of 1.4 GHz to 11 GHz is presented. Unlike previous scanning radiometric systems, multiple radiometers for each frequency are required in order to fill in the resolution cells across the swath created by the 15 meter diameter spin stabilized system. This multiple beam radiometric system is sometimes designated as a ""whiskbroom'' system in that it combines the techniques of the scanning and ""pushbroom'' type systems. The definition of the feed system including possible feed elements and location, determination of the fundamental reflector feed offset geometry including offset angles and f/D ratio, preliminary estimates of the beam efficiency of the feed reflector system, a summary of reflector mesh losses at the proposed radiometric frequency bands, an overall conceptual configuration design and preliminary structural and thermal analyses are included.
Sensor system concepts are discussed, taking into account a multispectral linear array instrument design, an improved earth resources sensing instrument, design tradeoffs for a multispectral linear array instrument, imaging spectrometer technologies for advanced earth remote sensing, and the design concept for an optimized earth radiation budget sensor. Topics related to supporting optics and signal processing methodologies are explored, giving attention to two mirror objective design for multispectral remote sensing, the measurement of optical modulation functions in sparsely sampled mosaic focal plane arrays, multispectral linear array focal plane signal processing, signal processing for the NASA multispectral linear array, the concept for a multiple resolution pushbroom sensor, and the evolution of the octal radiometer. Techniques and applications for multispectral data are considered along with aspects of focal plane technology.
The NASA Landsat program with imagery produced by the Multispectral Scanner has been thoroughly successful. The second generation of Landsat is represented by the Thematic Mapper, while the MLA sensor belongs to a third generation. It is pointed out that the strength of the MLA concept emanates from the pushbroom image-formation approach, which offers some fundamental improvements over opto-mechanically scanned instruments. The increased dwell time of the MLA sensor can be employed to improve signal-to-noise, spectral resolution, and spatial resolution simultaneously. Problems regarding design tradeoffs are considered, taking into account instrument sizing, configuration tradeoffs, optical design tradeoffs, aspects of spectral separation and registration, and radiometric accuracy and calibration tradeoffs. A description is provided of the instrument concept to which the design tradeoffs have led.

A process for directly integrating photoconductive lead sulfide (PbS) infrared detector material with silicon MOS integrated circuits has been developed primarily for application in long (greater than 10,000 detector elements) linear arrays for pushbroom scanning applications. The processing technology is based on the conventional PMOS and CMOS technologies with a variation in the metallization. Results and measurements on a fully integrated eight-element multiplexer are shown.
The state-of-the-art of multispectral sensing is reviewed and recommendations for future research and development are proposed. specifically, two generic sensor concepts were discussed. One is the multispectral pushbroom sensor utilizing linear array technology which operates in six spectral bands including two in the SWIR region and incorporates capabilities for stereo and crosstrack pointing. The second concept is the imaging spectrometer (IS) which incorporates a dispersive element and area arrays to provide both spectral and spatial information simultaneously. Other key technology areas included very large scale integration and the computer aided design of these devices.
An airborne, pushbroom-style multispectral (1.2-2.4 micron) imaging sensor system known as Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) has been flown over the Pico Anticline region of the Santa Susana Mountains, California (U.S.A.). Initial interpretation of preliminary data sets suggest that the high spectral resolution data from AIS provide superior vegetation discrimination and mapping capabilities when compared with other imaging systems (MSS, TMS). AIS spectral data may also contain information concerning the state of health of both native and cultivated vegetation. Such capabilities (discrimination, mapping, and assessment of state of health) will be most useful in geobotanical assessment of this and other areas.
The development and current status of InSb line arrays for astronomy are reviewed. Instrument concepts are currently being developed for an infrared instrument for NASA's Space Telescope which would use such detectors for both spectroscopy and imaging. Preliminary performance measurements are given for a simple pushbroom camera, using a 128-element line array, designed for operation on the 24-inch Cassegrain telescope at the JPL Table Mountain Observatory. The design and construction of the camera are described.
