Full complex amplitude control of second-harmonic generation via electrically tunable intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces

Nonlinear intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces based on coupling of the intersubband nonlinear optical response of quantum-engineered semiconductor heterostructures and electromagnetic modes of nanoresonators provide efficient frequency mixing with moderate pump intensities. The resonant nonlinear optical response, represented as a complex function, can be modulated via Stark tuning of intersubband transition energies under applied voltages. However, achieving full complex amplitude control (both phase and magnitude) remains challenging. In this work, we present and experimentally validate electrically tunable nonlinear intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces that achieve complete complex amplitude control for second-harmonic generation (SHG). Through a design featuring two in-plane flipped meta-atoms per unit cell, we achieve complete electrical control of both the amplitude and phase of the metasurface second-order nonlinear susceptibility, with a tuning range of 0 to 30 nm V −1 for the magnitude and 0-2π for the phase of the nonlinear optical response. Using these properties, we achieve complete on-off SHG modulation and beam diffraction tuning through electrically controlled amplitude and phase gratings.

Surface structure of water from soft X-ray second harmonic generation

The microscopic structure of water’s surface is crucial to many natural and industrial processes, but studying its hydrogen bond (H-bond) network directly remains challenging due to the required interfacial sensitivity of experimental techniques. By leveraging advances in flat liquid sheet microjets and terawatt-scale attosecond soft X-ray pulses from the LCLS X-ray free electron laser, we employed soft X-ray second harmonic generation (SXSHG) spectroscopy to examine the liquid water/vapor interface. SXSHG combines the elemental selectivity of X-ray spectroscopies with the surface selectivity of SHG and gives access to the electronic structure of interfacial species. Here, we show the SXSHG spectrum differs from bulk water’s X-ray absorption, with its peak shifted several eV, indicating a vastly different electronic environment at the interface as compared to the bulk. First-principles electronic structure calculations show the signal is highly sensitive to H-bond interactions, such as water molecules accepting a single H-bond, which are surface abundant.

Ferrorotational domain walls revealed by electric quadrupole second harmonic generation microscopy

Domain walls are ubiquitous in materials that undergo phase transitions driven by spontaneous symmetry breaking. Domain walls in ferroics and multiferroics have received tremendous attention recently due to their emergent properties distinct from their domain counterparts—for example, their high mobility and controllability, as well as their potential applications in nanoelectronics. However, it is extremely challenging to detect, visualize, and study the ferrorotational (FR) domain walls because the FR order, in contrast to ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity, is invariant under both the spatial-inversion and the time-reversal operations and, thus, hardly couple with conventional experimental probes. Here, a FR candidate NiTi⁢O 3 is investigated by ultrasensitive electric quadrupole (EQ) second-harmonic generation rotational anisotropy (SHG RA) to probe the point symmetries of the two degenerate FR domain states, showing their relation by the vertical mirror operations that are broken below the FR critical temperature. We then visualize the real-space FR domains by scanning EQ SHG microscopy, and further, resolve the FR domain walls by revealing a suppressed SHG intensity at the domain walls. By taking local EQ SHG RA measurements, we show the restoration of the mirror symmetry at FR domain walls and prove their unconventional nonpolar nature. In conclusion, our findings not only provide a comprehensive insight into FR domain walls, but also demonstrate a unique and powerful tool for future studies on domain walls of unconventional ferroics both of which pave the way towards future manipulations and applications of FR domain walls.

Hybrid Bismuth Halide with Rich Polymorphism and Second Harmonic Generation Response

Hybrid structures have emerged as a promising class of optical materials, due to their ability to couple the robustness of inorganic and the tunability of organic compounds. However, their application in nonlinear optics (NLO) remains limited, largely due to underexplored factors that drive the formation of noncentrosymmetric structures and NLO property characterization. In this work, we explore the formation, structural and temperature polymorphism, and optical properties of the (Et 3 NH) 3 Bi 2 Br 9 composition, which crystallizes as either noncentrosymmetric or centrosymmetric polymorph. Structural analysis showed that the alignment of [Bi 2 Br 9 ] 3– units dictates the symmetry of phases, as well as the nonlinear optical properties, with the triclinic polymorph exhibiting a second harmonic generation (SHG) response both in visible and IR regions (1.29 × KH 2 PO 4 and 0.08 × AgGaS 2 ). Thermal analysis reveals polymorphic phase transitions and low melting points, making them melt-processable and ionic liquid candidates.

Structure Tuning, Strong Second Harmonic Generation Response, and High Optical Stability of the Polar Semiconductors Na 1- x K x AsQ 2

We report the mixed cation compounds Na 1-x K x AsSe 2 (x = 0.8, 0.65, 0.5) and Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 crystallize in the polar noncentrosymmetric space group Cc. The AAsQ(2) (A = alkali metals, Q = S, Se) family features one-dimensional (1D) 1 / ∞ [AQ 2 - ] chains comprising corner-sharing pyramidal AQ 3 units in which the packing of these chains is dependent on the alkali metals. The parallel 1 / ∞ [AQ(2) - ] chains interact via short As ∙∙∙Se contacts, which increase in length when the fraction of K atoms is increased. The increase in the As ∙∙∙Se interchain distance increases the band gap from 1.75 eV in γ-NaAsSe 2 to 2.01 eV in Na 0.35 K 0.65 AsSe 2 , 2.07 eV in Na 0.2 K 0.8 AsSe 2 , and 2.18 eV in Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 . The Na 1-x K x AsSe 2 (x = 0.8, 0.65) compounds melt congruently at approximately 316 °C. Wavelength-dependent second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements on powder samples of Na 1-x K x AsSe 2 (x = 0.8, 0.65, 0.5) and Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 suggest that Na 0.2 K 0.8 AsSe 2 and Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 have the highest SHG response and exhibit significantly higher laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs). Theoretical SHG calculations on Na 0.5 K 0.5 AsSe 2 confirm its SHG response with the highest value of d 33 = 22.5 pm/V χ 333 (2) = 45.0 pm/V). The effective nonlinearity for a randomly oriented powder is calculated to be d eff = 18.9 pm/V χ eff (2) = 37.8 pm/V), which is consistent with the experimentally obtained value of d eff = 16.5 pm/V χ eff (2) = 33.0 pm/V). Three-photon absorption is the dominant mechanism for the optical breakdown of the compounds under intense excitation at 1580 nm, with Na 0.2 K 0.8 AsSe 2 exhibiting the highest stability.

Revisiting two thiophosphate compounds constituting d 0 transition metal HfP 2 S 6 and d 10 transition metal α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 as multifunctional materials for combining second harmonic generation response and photocurrent response

Two acentric thiophosphate compounds, HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 , are revisited and studied as infrared nonlinear optical materials. HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were structurally characterized without any property measurements. Here, in this work, HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were synthesized via high temperature salt flux reactions. Low-temperature polymorph acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 was purified and grown as mm-sized crystals with the aid of AgBr flux. The AgBr flux was revealed to play an important role in stabilizing the acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 . The acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 transforms to centrosymmetric β-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 at 850(5) K, which is revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and powder X-ray diffraction experiments. HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 are discovered by UV-vis spectrum measurements as indirect bandgap semiconductors with bandgaps of 2.2(1) eV and 2.5(1) eV, respectively, which is supported by DFT calculations and TB-LMTO-ASA calculations. The bonding pictures of α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were studied by crystal orbital Hamilton population calculations (COHP) coupled with electron localization function (ELF) analysis. DFT calculations predict that HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 would exhibit different optical performances regardless of being constructed from identical [P 2 S 6 ] motifs. HfP 2 S 6 exhibits a low second harmonic generation (SHG) response, ~0.21 × AGS (for the sample of particle size of 25 μm). α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 possesses moderate SHG response, ~0.61 × AGS (for the sample of particle size of 225 μm) coupled with a high laser damage threshold (LDT) of ~3.2 × AGS. Characteristics of high ambient stability, moderate bandgap and SHG response, type-I phase-matching capability, and high LDT together with the easy growth of large crystals make α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 attractive for future infrared nonlinear optical applications. Photocurrent measurements found that α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 and β-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 have high photocurrent response, 165 nA cm -2 and 135 nA cm -2 , respectively. α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 is a new multifunctional material of the ternary Ag–P–S system, which combines nonlinear optical (NLO) properties and photocurrent response.

Nonlinear Dispersion Relation and Out‐of‐Plane Second Harmonic Generation in MoSSe and WSSe Janus Monolayers

Janus transition metal dichalcogenides are an emerging class of atomically thin materials with engineered broken mirror symmetry that gives rise to long‐lived dipolar excitons, Rashba splitting, and topologically protected solitons. They hold great promise as a versatile nonlinear optical platform due to their broadband harmonic generation tunability, ease of integration on photonic structures, and nonlinearities beyond the basal crystal plane. Here, second and third harmonic generation in MoSSe and WSSe Janus monolayers is studied. Polarization‐resolved spectroscopy is used to map the full second‐order susceptibility tensor of MoSSe, including its out‐of‐plane components. In addition, the effective third‐order susceptibility and the second‐order nonlinear dispersion close to exciton resonances for both MoSSe and WSSe are measured at room and cryogenic temperatures. This work sets a bedrock for understanding the nonlinear optical properties of Janus transition metal dichalcogenides and probing their use in the next‐generation on‐chip multifaceted photonic devices.

Quantitative time-resolved diagnostics of electric field dynamics during individual plasma breakdown events using burst laser pulse electric field induced second harmonic generation

In plasma discharges, the acceleration of electrons by a fast varying electric field and the subsequent collisional electron energy transfer determines the plasma dynamics, chemical reactivity, and breakdown. Current in situ electric field measurements require reconstruction of the temporal profile over many observations. However, such methods are unsuitable for non-repetitive and unstable plasmas. Here, in this paper, we present a method for creating “movies” of dynamic electric fields in a single acquisition at sample rates of 500 × 10 6 fps. This ultrafast diagnostic was demonstrated in radio frequency electric fields between two parallel plates in air, as well as in Ar nanosecond-pulsed single-sided dielectric barrier discharges.

Measurements of second-harmonic Fourier coefficients from azimuthal anisotropies in p + p , p + Au , d + Au , and He 3 + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Recently, the PHENIX Collaboration has published second- and third-harmonic Fourier coefficients v 2 and v 3 for midrapidity (|η|< 0.35 ) charged hadrons in 0%–5% central p+Au, d+Au, and 3 He+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 200 GeV, utilizing three sets of two-particle correlations for two detector combinations with different pseudorapidity acceptance [Acharya et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, 024901 (2022)]. Here, this paper extends these measurements of v 2 to all centralities in p+Au, d+Au, and 3 He+Au collisions, as well as p+p collisions, as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) and event multiplicity. The kinematic dependence of v 2 is quantified as the ratio R of v 2 between the two detector combinations as a function of event multiplicity for 0.5 < p T <1 and 2 T < 2.5 GeV/c. A multiphase-transport (AMPT) model can reproduce the observed v 2 in most-central to midcentral d Au and 3 He+Au collisions. However, the AMPT model systematically overestimates the measurements in p+p, p+Au, and peripheral d+Au and 3 He+Au collisions, indicating a higher nonflow contribution in the AMPT model than in the experimental data. The AMPT model fails to describe the observed R for 0.5 < p T < 1 GeV/c , but there is qualitative agreement with the measurements for 2 < p T < 2.5 GeV/c.
