Perspective traffic display format and airline pilot traffic avoidance

Part-task experiments have examined perspective projections of cockpit displays of traffic information as a means of presenting aircraft separation information to airline pilots. Ten airline pilots served as subjects in an experiment comparing the perspective projection with plan-view projections of the same air traffic situations. The pilots' task was to monitor the traffic display in order to decide if an avoidance maneuver was needed. Pilots took more time to select avoidance maneuvers with a conventional plan-view display than with an experimental perspective display. In contrast to previous results, if the pilots selected a maneuver with the perspective display, they were more likely to choose one with a vertical component. Tabulation of the outcomes of their initial avoidance decisions with both perspective and plan-view displays showed that they were more likely to achieve required separation with maneuvers chosen with the aid of perspective displays.

Trivalent Rare Earth Adsorption at Phosphonic Acid Monolayers

The increasing need for rare earth separations requires a detailed understanding of trivalent ion behavior at charged aqueous interfaces. Here, neodymium (Nd) adsorption on Langmuir monolayers of octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPA), a single‐chain phosphonic acid capable of double deprotonation, at the air/water interface, is investigated. Combining sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy with X‐ray fluorescence near total reflection (XFNTR), both the interfacial water ordering and ion density are examined. Under ambient conditions, Nd ions induce enhanced deprotonation of ODPA headgroups, leading to interfacial ion densities as high as 1 Nd per 30 Å 2 . This adsorption behavior arises from a complex interplay between direct electrostatic interactions, ion pairing, and hydration effects, which cannot be fully captured by classical Gouy–Chapman–Stern models. These insights into trivalent ion adsorption mechanisms provide a pathway toward more effective separation processes for rare earth metals.

Optimizing Mars Sphere of Influence Maneuvers for NASA's Evolvable Mars Campaign

NASA's Human Spaceflight Architecture Team is refining human exploration architectures that will extend human presence to the Martian surface. For both Mars orbital and surface missions, NASA's Evolvable Mars Campaign assumes that cargo and crew can be delivered repeatedly to the same destination. Up to this point, interplanetary trajectories have been optimized to minimize the total propulsive requirements of the in-space transportation systems, while the pre-deployed assets and surface systems are optimized to minimize their respective propulsive requirements separate from the in-space transportation system. There is a need to investigate the coupled problem of optimizing the interplanetary trajectory and optimizing the maneuvers within Mars's sphere of influence. This paper provides a description of the ongoing method development, analysis and initial results of the effort to resolve the discontinuity between the interplanetary trajectory and the Mars sphere of influence trajectories. Assessment of Phobos and Deimos orbital missions shows the in-space transportation and crew taxi allocations are adequate for missions in the 2030s. Because the surface site has yet to be selected, the transportation elements must be sized to provide enough capability to provide surface access to all landing sites under consideration. Analysis shows access to sites from elliptical parking orbits with a lander that is designed for sub-periapsis landing location is either infeasible or requires expensive orbital maneuvers for many latitude ranges. In this case the locus of potential arrival perigee vectors identifies the potential maximum north or south latitudes accessible. Higher arrival velocities can decrease reorientation costs and increase landing site availability. Utilizing hyperbolic arrival and departure vectors in the optimization scheme will increase transportation site accessibility and provide more optimal solutions.

IRIS: Exploring Performance Scaling of the Intelligent Runtime System and its Dynamic Scheduling Policies

High-Performance Computing is becoming increasingly heterogeneous, relying on a diverse mix of hardware to achieve good performance. Paradoxically, current drivers and frameworks for these devices typically require separate languages and implementations for each vendor. Furthermore, there are few tools and little support to schedule codes between these devices in a truly heterogeneous manner-partly because of this fragmentation between vendors and the languages each supports. To overcome both limitations, the Intelligent Runtime System (IRIS) was developed. It allows a common task abstraction to automatically be shared among contemporary vendors and is run from a single host-side API. At runtime, IRIS queries the host system and registers which frameworks and drivers are available, these determine which kernels can be used by the scheduler-CPUs via OpenMP, Nvidia GPUs (CUDA), AMD GPUs (HIP), and Intel and Xilinx FPGAs with OpenCL. IRIS enables tasks to be scheduled to any heterogeneous device and resolves to the appropriate kernel binary at runtimeit only uses the devices supported by the system on which it is run. IRIS supports single-task and graph-based expressions of dependencies of tasks. Additionally, IRIS features a range of dynamic scheduling policies, allowing complex chains of tasks and interactions to be executed, relieving the programmer/user from considering the system to assign tasks to devices optimally. This paper presents the peak performance attainable by IRIS over a range of systems-each with different numbers and types of accelerator devices, it highlights the flexibility of IRIS since these devices are truly heterogeneous, relying on different backends (drivers, frameworks, and languages) which historically required unique implementations to utilize them. We then use this peak performance as a baseline to compare increasingly complex chains of tasks (with increasingly complex task dependencies) and evaluate how IRIS copes. Finally, we consider the performance of different IRIS scheduling policies on this range of task graphs.

Demonstration of a 228 Ra/ 228 Ac isotope generator

An isotope generator to produce 228 Ac from 228 Ra was developed using a cation exchange resin column eluted with an acetate-diethylenetriaminpentaacetic acid buffer. Here, the elution behavior of 228 Ac on the column was studied with solutions of various pHs to select the optimal conditions. Two identical isotope generators were eluted for 47 days with over 100 mL of eluant with no detectable 228 Ra breakthrough and high 228 Ac yields (∼95%). The separation requires only biocompatible reagents and is performed at pH 4.6, conditions suitable for radiopharmaceutical studies of Ac.

Exploration for astromers near 132 Sn with the Canadian Penning Trap

Nuclear isomers can have significant impacts on astrophysical nucleosynthesis processes, with recent efforts demonstrating that the population of isomeric states with different half-lives may require separate treatment in reaction networks to accurately capture the differences in heating or in identifiable electromagnetic signals. Several potential so-called “astromers” in tin and antimony isotopes near doubly magic 132 Sn were identified and direct mass measurements of their ground and isomeric states were performed with the Canadian Penning Trap at Argonne National Laboratory's CARIBU facility, and their impact on astrophysical reaction rates and in reaction networks was calculated. Finally, it was found that 129⁢𝑔,𝑚 Sn , with measured mass excesses of −80593.2⁢(25) and −80557.4⁢(25) keV, respectively, and an excitation energy of 35.8(35) keV, behaves as an astromer during neutron capture in the 𝑖-process and in the 𝑟-process.

Real-Time GPU-Accelerated OFDR With an Integrated Auxiliary Interferometer

A GPU-accelerated optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) system with an improved integrated auxiliary interferometer is proposed. Unlike conventional approaches that require separate auxiliary interferometers and multiple detection channels, the proposed OFDR system embeds this functionality directly into the signal via an intentional beat component. This enables self-calibration of laser nonlinearity while maintaining a cost-effective hardware configuration. Building on this simplified configuration, the system leverages GPU acceleration with an NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti to achieve real-time performance, delivering high-throughput signal processing for continuous OFDR interrogation. The signal processing pipeline comprises signal capture, resampling for nonlinearity compensation, and frequency shift computation, all optimized for parallel execution. Hardware benchmarking demonstrates substantial acceleration over CPU implementations, achieving up to a 45× speedup for resampling and frequency shift computations and enabling processing latencies below 30 ms. Thermal response validation is conducted under two complementary scenarios: localized heating using a water bath and cryogenic-temperature conditions using liquid nitrogen. Under localized heating, the system achieves an accuracy of 0.249 °C with a thermal sensitivity of 5.971 GHz/°C, while cryogenic-temperature validation demonstrates a frequency shift response with a sensitivity of 2.383 GHz/°C and an accuracy of 2.04 °C. The high acceleration of the proposed GPU-accelerated OFDR system and its accuracy are achieved by exploiting CUDA-based stride indexing, enabling efficient parallel segmentation and processing of large datasets without additional memory copies. The benchmarking results confirm the robustness, accuracy, and deployability of the proposed OFDR system across a wide temperature range, establishing it as a practical platform for real-time distributed fiber sensing in structurally dynamic environments.

Extremely Durable Concrete using Methane Decarbonization Nanofiber Co-products with Hydrogen

This project successfully developed a scalable, low-cost co-production process for hydrogen (H₂) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) using methane through catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CVD). CNFs are high-value materials with exceptional mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties, while hydrogen is a critical clean energy resource. By leveraging vapor deposition to create highly dispersed metal catalysts, this work addressed the dual challenge of producing low-cost hydrogen and enhancing the durability of concrete using co-produced CNFs. Unlike prior approaches, which required separating the carbon product from the catalyst, this innovative method integrated the carbon product, catalyst, and silica support as a crack-bridging additive for Portland cement. This novel application aimed to advance the performance of high-performance concrete (HPC) by improving its flexural toughness, durability, and resistance to environmental degradation.

Optical Photometric Indicators of Galaxy Cluster Relaxation

Abstract The most dynamically relaxed clusters of galaxies play a special role in cosmological studies as well as astrophysical studies of the intracluster medium (ICM) and active galactic nucleus feedback. While high-spatial-resolution imaging of the morphology of the ICM has long been the gold standard for establishing a cluster’s dynamical state, such data are not available from current or planned surveys, and thus require separate, pointed follow-up observations. With optical and/or near-IR photometric imaging, and red-sequence cluster finding results from those data, expected to be ubiquitously available for clusters discovered in upcoming optical and millimeter-wavelength surveys, it is worth asking how effectively photometric data alone can identify relaxed cluster candidates, before investing in, e.g., high-resolution X-ray observations. Here we assess the ability of several simple photometric measurements, based on the redMaPPer cluster finder run on Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, to reproduce X-ray classifications of dynamical state for an X-ray selected sample of massive clusters. We find that two simple metrics contrasting the bright central galaxy (BCG) to other cluster members can identify a complete sample of relaxed clusters with a purity of ∼40% in our data set. Including minimal ICM information in the form of a center position increases the purity to ∼60%. However, all three metrics depend critically on correctly identifying the BCG, which is presently a challenge for optical red-sequence cluster finders.

Magnetospheric sources

Motions of the plasma and the energetic particles in the magnetosphere modify the earth's internal field. It is not possible to separate the fields produced by the magnetospheric sources from the field of internal terrestrial origin on the basis of magnetic field observations made on the ground. Such a separation requires an analysis in which data obtained with the aid of satellites are taken into account in addition to the values measured on the ground. Data of the magnetic field obtained by the satellite Ogo 5 are considered.

Basic analysis of terminal operation benefits resulting from reduced vortex separation minima

The impact of reducing the wake vortex minimum separation required behind heavy jets on terminal area operation rate was analyzed. The effect on arrival saturation and steady state average delay was determined for various percentages mix of heavy and large jet traffic samples operating under various precision of interarrival spacing. Benefits increase with percentage of heavy aircraft and with precision of control. These results demonstrate the payoff possible from research to reduce the severity of the trailing vortex by aerodynamic means.

Aircraft wake-vortex minimization by use of flaps

A survey was made of research on the alleviation of the trailing vortex hazard by altering span loading with flaps on the generator airplane. Flap configurations of the generator that shed multiple vortices were found to have wakes that dispersed by vortex merging and sinusoidal instability. Reductions of approximately 50 percent in both the wake rolling moment imposed on a following aircraft and the aircraft separation requirement were achieved in the ground based and flight test experiments by deflecting the trailing edge flaps more inboard than outboard. Significantly, this configuration did not increase the drag or vibration on the generating aircraft compared to the conventional landing configuration. Ground based results of rolling moment measurement and flow visualization are shown, using a water tow facility, an air tow facility, and a wind tunnel. Flight test results are also shown, using a full scale B-747 airplane. General agreement was found among the results of the various ground based facilities and the flight tests.

The moon in Heiligenschein

An analysis of 25 photometric digital images of the moon has been carried out to obtain a single image in a new mapping parameter, the Heiligenschein exponent. The data necessarily represent a range of lunar phases, but all are within 10 hours of full moon. The new parameter characterizes the rate at which lunar features brighten as their local phase angles approach zero. Although considerable contrast is present in this parameter, there is only a small corelation with normal albedo. In particular, the large albedo difference between maria and highlands is not simply reflected in Heiligenschein differences, which are larger within each category of terrain than the difference between the Heiligenschein averages of each. A correlation with age may be present in both the maria and the highlands, but its determination will require separation into distinct geochemical provinces.

Eddy-current sensor measures bolt loading

Thin wire welded to bottom of hole down center of bolt permits measurement of tension in bolt. Bolt lengthens under strain, but wire is not loaded, so gap between wire and eddy-current gap transducer mounted on bolt head indicates bolt loading. Eddy-current transducer could measure gap within 0.05 mm. Method does not require separate "standard" for each bolt type, and is not sensitive to dirt or oil in bolt hole, unlike ultrasonic probes.
