Flight Deck Implications for the Implementation of an Integrated Arrival, Departure, and Surface (IADS) Traffic Management System

NASA's Airspace Technical Demonstration-2 (ATD-2) Integrated Arrival, Departure, and Surface (IADS) traffic management system integrates strategic and tactical scheduling tools for traffic sequencing from the gate to the overhead stream and back again for multi-airport, metroplex environments. The system is expected to increase airport efficiency, predictability, and throughout while improving information sharing among all airport operators. A series of knowledge elicitation sessions were conducted with commercial airline pilots and general aviation pilots to characterize airport operations and procedures. This presentation describes ATD-2 IADS-enabled Information Sharing impacts on the Flight Deck, benefits of that Information Sharing, pilot procedural changes, our pilot engagement/outreach efforts, use of a Mobile App to faciliate information flow in GA operations, and future IADS efforts at other airports/metroplexes.

A Space Station robot walker and its shared control software

In this paper, we first briefly overview the update of the self-mobile space manipulator (SMSM) configuration and testbed. The new robot is capable of projecting cameras anywhere interior or exterior of the Space Station Freedom (SSF), and will be an ideal tool for inspecting connectors, structures, and other facilities on SSF. Experiments have been performed under two gravity compensation systems and a full-scale model of a segment of SSF. This paper presents a real-time shared control architecture that enables the robot to coordinate autonomous locomotion and teleoperation input for reliable walking on SSF. Autonomous locomotion can be executed based on a CAD model and off-line trajectory planning, or can be guided by a vision system with neural network identification. Teleoperation control can be specified by a real-time graphical interface and a free-flying hand controller. SMSM will be a valuable assistant for astronauts in inspection and other EVA missions.

Employment access assessed using the mobility energy productivity (MEP) metric

Transit agencies, local governments, employers, and job-seekers have a shared interest in connecting residents with jobs in an affordable and time efficient manner, with public agencies also caring about energy efficiency and air quality. Employment hubs are an opportunity to solve the spatial mismatch between homes of job-seekers and the locations of desirable jobs. Such is the case in Columbus, Ohio, between Rickenbacker Industrial Park and the Linden neighborhood, which has experienced persistent poverty. Using the mobility energy productivity (MEP) metric to examine travel time, cost, and energy efficiency, we show current transit service is undesirable due to excessive travel time (70 min, MEP = 0), while driving alone (MEP = 0.20) may be less desirable than a hypothetical, fare-free microtransit service (MEP = 0.23). Updating MEP to use locally-derived input data can help identify parameters under which providing microtransit service in a specific place has compelling benefits in terms of vehicle energy efficiency as well as cost and travel time for riders.

A comparison of metropolitan and non-metropolitan employment characteristics: Indications of the size of non-metropolitan mobile communication services user classes

The similarities and differences between areas inside and outside U.S. metropolitan areas were evaluated in terms of their commercial/industrial and government employment characteristics. The comparison focuses on the levels, shares, and composition of employment in the commercial/industrial and government sectors that represent potential classes of land mobile communications users. The major findings of the analysis are as follows: (1) non-metropolitan commercial/industrial user classes of land mobile communication services exist in significant numbers; (2) the compositions of non-metropolitan and metropolitan commercial/industrial user classes of land mobile communication services closely resemble each other; (3) non-metropolitan areas have significant levels of the government user classes that represent potential markets for land mobile communication services; and (4) non-metropolitan local governments have a significantly larger proportion of their employment in the primary user classes of private land mobile radio service than do metropolitan local governments.

Deploying Mobility-On-Demand for All by Optimizing Paratransit Services

While on-demand ride-sharing services have become popular in recent years, traditional on-demand transit services cannot be used by everyone, e.g., people who use wheelchairs. Paratransit services, operated by public transit agencies, are a critical infrastructure that offers door-to-door transportation assistance for individuals who face challenges in using standard transit routes. However, with declining ridership and mounting financial pressure, public transit agencies in the USA struggle to operate existing services. We collaborate with a public transit agency from the southern USA, highlight the specific nuances of paratransit optimization, and present a vehicle routing problem formulation for optimizing paratransit. We validate our approach using real-world data from the transit agency, present results from an actual pilot deployment of the proposed approach in the city, and show how the proposed approach comprehensively outperforms existing approaches used by the transit agency. To the best of our knowledge, this work presents one of the first examples of using open-source algorithmic approaches for paratransit optimization.

Spectrum sharing between AMSS(R) and MSS

Generic satellite systems will serve aeronautical, land, and maritime users in the US and Canada. One important service, the Aeronautical Mobile Satellite (Route) Service (AMS(R)S), pertains to the safety and regularity of flight. The North American systems are designed to assure that this vital safety service is not impaired in any way as it shares the spectrum and satellites with a large number and great variety of other users in other services. Two of the topics discussed are AMS(R)S requirements and AMS(R)S operation through American Mobile Satellite Corporation (AMSC) Satellites.

Outcomes of PAX sapiens-Supported Global Wildlife Data Sharing Conferences for Enhanced One Health Security (GWDSC)

Across two consecutive Global Wildlife Data Sharing Conferences supported by PAX sapiens—Year 1 (May 2024) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Year 2 (2025) in Ciudad Real, Spain—the initiative converted wildlife data sharing from aspiration into operational reality, producing measurable impacts in platform development, data mobilization, standards harmonization, and international partnership formation. The conferences addressed a critical gap in global health security: while 75% of emerging infectious diseases affect both humans and animals and over 60% originate in wildlife, wildlife health surveillance has historically lagged behind human and agricultural sectors due to fragmented databases, inconsistent terminology, uneven capacity, and limited cross-border coordination. By convening practitioners, government agencies, international organizations, academic institutions, and NGOs, the GWDSC catalyzed trust-based relationships and practical workflows that enable earlier detection, better risk assessment, and more effective prevention of threats at the wildlife–domestic animal–human–environment interface.

A Preliminary Development of The Intelligent Change Detection System (ICDS): Using Machine Learning to Combat Change Blindness in Remote Operation Environments

The emergence of Advance Air Mobility (AAM) will increase the number and types of aerial vehicles operating in shared airspaces, which will subsequently affect the amount of actionable data that ground control station operators (GCSOs) will be expected to manage. In this environment, GCSOs are particularly susceptible to the visual perceptual phenomenon known as change blindness, in which a stimulus undergoes a change without the change being noticed by its observer. A machine agent designed to detect change blindness and mitigate the effects could improve human agent performance in a data-saturated remote operations environment. The objective of this paper is to describe a proof-of-concept system architecture that integrates real-time eye tracking and vehicle telemetry data to prevent human-agent errors resulting from change blindness while operating aircraft from a remote ground control station (GCS).

ChargeX OCPI Recommendations

The Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) is an open protocol that enables electric vehicle (EV) charging systems to work together across networks. It supports communication and data sharing between Charge Point Operators (CPOs), who manage charging stations, and e-Mobility Service Providers (eMSPs), who provide charging services to EV drivers. OCPI facilitates functions like user authorization, remote charge point control, charging session data exchange, and billing through Charge Detail Records (CDRs). This allows EV roaming, so drivers can charge at different networks without multiple accounts. As the EV market grows due to increased adoption and technological advancements, OCPI faces higher demands. This has revealed issues with CDR format consistency, timestamp standardization across regions, transmission of EV-side error codes for troubleshooting, and support for new use cases. These challenges can affect operations and user experience, particularly as the industry starts considering Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems, where EVs supply energy to the grid, and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies for broader energy interactions. Using feedback from the ChargeX Diagnostics taskforce discussions, industry 1-on-1 meetings, technical standards, and OCPI’s evolution through versions (e.g., OCPI 2.1.1, 2.2, and 2.2.1), this report identifies these issues and suggests practical recommendations. These aim to improve interoperability, streamline operations, and prepare OCPI for future trends in the EV charging ecosystem.

Network design consideration of a satellite-based mobile communications system

Technical considerations for the Mobile Satellite Experiment (MSAT-X), the ground segment testbed for the low-cost spectral efficient satellite-based mobile communications technologies being developed for the 1990's, are discussed. The Network Management Center contains a flexible resource sharing algorithm, the Demand Assigned Multiple Access scheme, which partitions the satellite transponder bandwidth among voice, data, and request channels. Satellite use of multiple UHF beams permits frequency reuse. The backhaul communications and the Telemetry, Tracking and Control traffic are provided through a single full-coverage SHF beam. Mobile Terminals communicate with the satellite using UHF. All communications including SHF-SHF between Base Stations and/or Gateways, are routed through the satellite. Because MSAT-X is an experimental network, higher level network protocols (which are service-specific) will be developed only to test the operation of the lowest three levels, the physical, data link, and network layers.

Technical note: A modified formulation of dynamic energy budget theory for faster computation of biological growth

Abstract. The mass conservation equation in the presence of boundary fluxes and chemical reactions from non-equilibrium thermodynamics is used to derive a modified dynamic energy budget (mDEB) model. Compared to the standard dynamic energy budget (sDEB) model (Kooijman, 2009), this modified formulation does not place the dilution effect in the mobilization kinetics of reserve biomass, and it maintains the partition principle for reserve mobilization dynamics for both linear and non-linear kinetics. Overall, the mDEB model shares most features with the sDEB model. However, for biological growth that requires multiple nutrients, the mDEB model is computationally much more efficient by not requiring numerical iterations for obtaining the specific growth rate. In an example of modeling the growth of Thalassiosira weissflogii in a nitrogen-limiting chemostat, the mDEB model was found to have almost the same accuracy as the sDEB model while requiring almost half of the computing time of the sDEB model. Since the sDEB model has been successfully applied in numerous studies, we believe that the mDEB model can help improve the modeling of biological growth and the associated ecosystem processes in various contexts.

Expedition Memory: Towards Agent-based Web Services for Creating and Using Mars Exploration Data.

Explorers ranging over kilometers of rugged, sometimes "feature-less" terrain for over a year could be overwhelmed by tracking and sharing what they have done and learned. An automated system based on the existing Mobile Agents design [ I ] and Mars Exploration Rover experience [2], could serve as an "expedition memory" that would be indexed by voice as wel1 as a web interface, linking people, places, activities, records (voice notes, photographs, samples). and a descriptive scientific ontology. This database would be accessible during EVAs by astronauts, annotated by the remote science team, linked to EVA plans, and allow cross indexing between sites and expeditions. We consider the basic problem, our philosophical approach, technical methods, and uses of the expedition memory for facilitating long-term collaboration between Mars crews and Earth support teams. We emphasize that a "memory" does not mean a database per se, but an interactive service that combines different resources, and ultimately could be like a helpful librarian.

Quantum Technologies for UAS (QTech)

Harness the power of quantum technologies to assure the availability of UAS communications against disruptions. Make use of quantum computing (e.g. quantum optimization) and quantum communication (e.g. quantum key distribution) to address the availability cybersecurity challenge. Our approach is three-fold: (1) Utilize quantum optimization algorithms to design robust network with routing redundancy that can respond adaptively to dynamically changing real-time environment and disruptions, (2) Utilize quantum optimization algorithms resource allocation for detection, localization, and tracking of mobile communication disruption agents, (3) Utilize quantum key distribution (QKD) to execute secure key sharing in high data rate optical communication and/or anti-jamming protocols for secure RF communication.

Direct sequence spread spectrum CDMA in shared spectrum applications

Personal Communication Network (PCN) is an entirely wireless communication system with the capability of assessing the wired telephone system to reach anyone processing only a wired telephone. It is expected to compete with the existing mobile cellular system which connects directly to the wired telephone system. While many PCN systems employ TDMA technology, the PCN system described here uses Broadband CDMA (BCDMA(sup SM)) which is capable of sharing the spectrum with other users and which is extremely resistant to fading caused by multipath.
