Simplification of multiple Fourier series - An example of algorithmic approach

This paper describes one example of multiple Fourier series which originate from a problem of spectral analysis of time series data. The example is exercised here with an algorithmic approach which can be generalized for other series manipulation on a computer. The generalized approach is presently pursued towards applications to a variety of multiple series and towards a general purpose algorithm for computer algebra implementation.

Simplification of power electronics for ion thruster neutralizers

A need exists for less complex and lower cost ion thruster systems. Design approaches and the demonstration of neutralizer power electronics for relaxed neutralizer keeper, tip heater, and vaporizer requirements are discussed. The neutralizer circuitry is operated from a 200 to 400 V bus and demonstrates an order of magnitude reduction in parts count. Furthermore, a new technique is described for regulating tip heater power and automatically switching over to provide keeper power with only four additional components. A new design to control the flow rate of the neutralizer with one integrated circuit is also presented.

A case for nonlinear model simplification in the design of flight control systems

An algorithm is presented for obtaining a reduced order or simplified nonlinear model of a nonlinear plant. The method provides a systematic approach for quickly finding the optimal simplified model of the system. Controllers are then designed around this nonlinear model and are used to control the original plant. An example design, for the F-8 aircraft, illustrates that the simplified model does indeed enable the design of a linear controller whose performance is indistinguishable from higher order optimal controllers for the original nonlinear plant. The net result is a simplified design procedure for effectively controlling complex nonlinear systems.

Computational Simplification of Robot-Arm Dynamics

Report presents two general methods for reducing mathematical complexities of state equations of robot-arm dynamics. Robot arms contain both rotary and linear joints. Both methods start with homogenous coordinates and Lagrangian formulation of mechanics briefly summarized in report. First method uses matrix-analysis techniques; second, vector-analysis techniques. Vector-analysis method includes new differential-vector representation of centripetal and Coriolis forces.

A study of spectrum fatigue crack propagation in two aluminum alloys. 1: Spectrum simplification

The fatigue crack propagation behavior of two commercial Al alloys was studied using spectrum loading conditions characteristics of those encountered at critical locations in high performance fighter aircraft. A tension dominated (TD) and tension compression (TC) spectrum were employed for each alloy. Using a mechanics-based analysis, it was suggested that negative loads could be eliminated for the TC spectrum for low to intermediate maximum stress intensities. The suggestion was verified by subsequent testing. Using fractographic evidence, it was suggested that a further similification in the spectra could be accomplished by eliminating low and intermediate peak load points resulting in near or below threshold maximum peak stress intensity values. It is concluded that load interactions become more important at higher stress intensities and more plasticity at the crack tip. These results suggest that a combined mechanics/fractographic mechanisms approach can be used to simplify other complex spectra.

A method for high order linear system reduction and nonlinear system simplification

Least-squares-type algorithms for reducing the order of linear systems in the frequency domain and simplifying nonlinear systems in time domain are developed and demonstrated. The possible model structures are represented as nodes in a tree, and costs along the branches are assigned using the repeated-Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure of Desrochers and Saridis (1980), permitting identification of the optimal n-term model by searching the tree to depth n, with no need for parameter identification. The efficiency and flexibility of the algorithms is shown in applications to the eighth-order linear system studied by Hsia (1972), a three-state eight-nonlinear-term aircraft-dynamics problem, and the related linear-controller problem (Garrard and Jordan, 1977).

A study of spectrum fatigue crack propagation in two aluminum alloys. I - Spectrum simplification. II - Influence of microstructures

An investigation of the fatigue crack propagation FCP behavior of two aluminum alloys is performed to simulate spectrum loading conditions found at critical locations in high performance fighter aircraft. Negative loads are shown to be eliminated for the tension-compression spectrum for low to intermediate maximum stress intensities, and load interactions are found to be more significant at higher stress intensities and with more plasticity at the crack tip. In the second part, the influence of microstructural features including grain size, inclusions, and dispersoids on constant amplitude and spectrum crack growth behavior in aluminum alloys is studied. At low stress intensities the I/M alloy demonstrated better FCP resistance than the P/M 7091 alloy for both constant amplitude and spectrum testing, and the inhomogeneous planar slip and large grain size of 7050 limit dislocation interactions, thereby improving FCP performance.

The simplification of fuzzy control algorithm and hardware implementation

The conventional interface composition algorithm of a fuzzy controller is very time and memory consuming. As a result, it is difficult to do real time fuzzy inference, and most fuzzy controllers are realized by look-up tables. Here, researchers derive a simplified algorithm using the defuzzification mean of maximum. This algorithm takes shorter computation time and needs less memory usage, thus making it possible to compute the fuzzy inference on real time and easy to tune the control rules on line. A hardware implementation based on a simplified fuzzy inference algorithm is described.

Simplifications of the RELIEF flow tagging system for laboratory use

The use of an O2:He stimulated Raman cell to generate the Stokes beam for the Raman vibrational pumping step of the RELIEF (Raman Excitation plus Laser-Induced Electronic Fluorescence) flow tagging method is reported. Use of the Raman cell rather than a dye laser provides pump and Stokes beams which are automatically frequency matched and temporally and spatially overlapped. The Nd:YAG pump laser is operated multilongitudinal mode, which eliminates the need for injection seeding, resulting in decreased operation complexity and improved stability with respect to acoustic noise. Results are presented for 1st Stokes conversion efficiency and stimulated Brillouin backscattering loss and are compared to the case of pure O2. Scanning CARS measurements of the Q-branch lineshape for both pure O2 and the O2:He mixture are also presented.

Toward Simplification of Dynamic Subgrid-Scale Models

We examine the relationship between the filter and the subgrid-scale (SGS) model for large-eddy simulations, in general, and for those with dynamic SGS models, in particular. From a review of the literature, it would appear that many practitioners of LES consider the link between the filter and the model more or less as a formality of little practical effect. In contrast, we will show that the filter and the model are intimately linked, that the Smagorinsky SGS model is appropriate only for filters of first- or second-order, and that the Smagorinsky model is inconsistent with spectral filters. Moreover, the Germano identity is shown to be both problematic and unnecessary for the development of dynamic SGS models. Its use obscures the following fundamental realization: For a suitably chosen filter, the computible resolved turbulent stresses, property scaled, closely approximate the SGS stresses.

Co-evolution for Problem Simplification

This paper explores a co-evolutionary approach applicable to difficult problems with limited failure/success performance feedback. Like familiar "predator-prey" frameworks this algorithm evolves two populations of individuals - the solutions (predators) and the problems (prey). The approach extends previous work by rewarding only the problems that match their difficulty to the level of solut,ion competence. In complex problem domains with limited feedback, this "tractability constraint" helps provide an adaptive fitness gradient that, effectively differentiates the candidate solutions. The algorithm generates selective pressure toward the evolution of increasingly competent solutions by rewarding solution generality and uniqueness and problem tractability and difficulty. Relative (inverse-fitness) and absolute (static objective function) approaches to evaluating problem difficulty are explored and discussed. On a simple control task, this co-evolutionary algorithm was found to have significant advantages over a genetic algorithm with either a static fitness function or a fitness function that changes on a hand-tuned schedule.

On Abstractions and Simplifications in the Design of Human-Automation Interfaces

This report addresses the design of human-automation interaction from a formal perspective that focuses on the information content of the interface, rather than the design of the graphical user interface. It also addresses the, issue of the information provided to the user (e.g., user-manuals, training material, and all other resources). In this report, we propose a formal procedure for generating interfaces and user-manuals. The procedure is guided by two criteria: First, the interface must be correct, i.e., that with the given interface the user will be able to perform the specified tasks correctly. Second, the interface should be as succinct as possible. The report discusses the underlying concepts and the formal methods for this approach. Several examples are used to illustrate the procedure. The algorithm for constructing interfaces can be automated, and a preliminary software system for its implementation has been developed.

Simplification of Fatigue Test Requirements for Damage Tolerance of Composite Interstage Launch Vehicle Hardware

The issue of fatigue loading of structures composed of composite materials is considered in a requirements document that is currently in place for manned launch vehicles. By taking into account the short life of these parts, coupled with design considerations, it is demonstrated that the necessary coupon level fatigue data collapse to a static case. Data from a literature review of past studies that examined compressive fatigue loading after impact and data generated from this experimental study are presented to support this finding. Damage growth, in the form of infrared thermography, was difficult to detect due to rapid degradation of compressive properties once damage growth initiated. Unrealistically high fatigue amplitudes were needed to fail 5 of 15 specimens before 10,000 cycles were reached. Since a typical vehicle structure, such as the Ares I interstage, only experiences a few cycles near limit load, it is concluded that static compression after impact (CAI) strength data will suffice for most launch vehicle structures.
