Heterogeneous Computing

To leverage the increasing heterogeneity in modern computing resources, Geant4 incorporates advanced software tools and a task-based framework (G4Tasking) that enables efficient parallelism at event, sub-event, and track levels. Ongoing R&D efforts focus on integrating GPUs into high-energy physics (HEP) simulations, including optical photon simulation with Opticks/NVIDIA OptiX, offloading electromagnetic particle transport using G4HepEM/AdePT and Celeritas, and employing advanced surface-based geometry models such as VecGeom2.0 and ORANGE. As Geant4 continues evolving toward high-performance computing (HPC) and heterogeneous architectures, it remains a key tool for large-scale simulations in HEP and beyond.

Scalable, In-situ Data Clustering Data Analysis for Extreme Scale Scientific Computing (Final Report)

The objective of this project is to address challenges in the design and development of scalable in-situ data clustering and analytics algorithms and software. Our goal is to develop parallel software consisting of a set of spatio-temporal data clustering and anomaly detection functions, both of which are very important for large-scale analysis and have wide applicability for in-situ runs as well as post-processing analysis. Our design principles for in-situ analysis consider the following: (1) identify parts of the computation can be done close to the data within the nodes, while it is still in memory; (2) extract analysis components can (and should) be performed in remote staging and analysis nodes; (3) develop error-bound approximation methods for applications tolerable for small errors; (4) identify the type of derived distributions and statistics, for spatio-temporal data, that can be kept locally in order to both accelerate computations and meet energy constraints in subsequent iterations and phases; (5) use a self-describing data format so that data can be consistent and understood among local storage (memory and SSDs) and at staging and analysis nodes, thereby providing portability and flexibility; (6) develop service-oriented functions that can schedule in-situ and post-hoc analysis tasks based on the dynamic requirements of applications. Our development focus is to produce the parallel data analysis software/library that will be scalable, reusable, extensible, and generic for applications in different disciplines. The software will be able to run in-situ with the simulations as well as post-hoc analysis. This approach will satisfy many synergistic requirements for data intensive applications executed on data coming from instruments and experiments. In particular, the proposed multilevel approach is directly applicable to perform design tradeoffs for running part of the algorithms near the instruments and the rest on remote (analysis) systems.

mesoflow [SWR-22-56]

Mesoflow is a continuum scale simulation tool developed specifically for modeling transport and chemistry at the mesoscale. Our solver utilizes Cartesian block-structured adaptive mesh refinement to resolve complex surface morphologies (of catalysts/biomass particles among others) directly obtained from X-ray tomography data. An immersed boundary based formulation enables rapid representation of complex geometries prevalent in most mesoporous interfaces. The solver is developed on top of open-source performance portable library, AMReX, providing parallel execution capabilities on current and upcoming high-performance-computing (HPC) architectures. Our flexible software framework enables integration of complex chemical mechanisms at heterogenous interfaces and time-split algorithms for circumventing highly disparate reaction and flow time-scales. Our current studies indicate a ten-fold performance gain by using graphics-processing-units (GPU) compared to a single processor for representative problem sizes (2 million cell mesh).

Real Vector Framework

SAND2025-11463O The Real Vector Framework (RVF) is a modern and flexible C++ vector math library for developing scientific computing software that involves vector computations. RVF allows an opt-in approach to functionality that parallels the familiar base-class and override structures of object-oriented programming. Users can reuse and customize the code without inheritance entanglements and dynamic dispatch, while enabling seamless interoperability between diverse container types. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

GridOPTICS/GridPACK

GridPACK is a software framework consisting of a set of modules designed to simplify the development of programs that model the power grid and run on parallel, high performance computing platforms. It also contains several fully developed applications, including powerflow, dynamic simulation, state estimation, Kalman filter analysis (dynamic state estimation), contingency analysis and real time path rating. These applications can be used either standalone or as components in more complicated workflows that combine several different types of application together. The framework modules are available as a combination of libraries and software templates and consist of components for setting up and distributing power grid networks, support for modeling the behavior of individual buses and branches in the network, converting the network models to the corresponding algebraic equations, and parallel routines for manipulating and solving large algebraic systems. The framework also contains a module for distributing tasks evenly amongst computing resources, even if individual tasks vary widely in their execution times. Additional modules support input and output, basic statistical analysis of contingency based calculations, distributed data structures, as well as basic profiling and error management.

Intelligent Partitioning based Fully Parallel AC Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow

Today’s power grid is becoming more diverse and integrated with high-level distributed energy resources and smart control technologies that is creating a new set of grid management challenges in terms of large-scale, nonlinear, and non-convex problem modeling, complex and time-consuming computation, as well as difficult uncertainty handling. This project focused on solving a challenging multi-period security-constrained generation scheduling problem, which is of great importance for maximizing the social welfare of real-time dispatch, day-ahead market, as well as weekly planning of power systems. Our developed software explored parallel optimization algorithms for complex and realistic power system models, and develop fast, efficient, and robust grid optimization solutions on the high-performance computing platform that will enable increased grid economics, flexibility, resilience, as well as energy security in the United States.

Research software engineering: Professionalization, roles, and identity

This report summarizes the results of a study of research software professionals based on 17 interviews conducted at U.S. national laboratories and academic institutions. The study focuses on understanding the emerging professional role of research software engineer (RSE) and examining how the history of software engineering might be relevant to the emergence of research software engineering as a professional movement. The report first uses interview data to identify several models of professional identity for research software professionals. These include dominance models in which a person strongly identifies with a single professional identity (such as RSE), and multiplicity models in which an individual sees an identity like RSE as just one facet of their overall professional role. Next, it identifies three types of work situations for software professionals at national laboratories, covering those who work in dedicated RSE organizations, those who play an integral role in large multiphysics code projects, and those who work in a more isolated capacity to provide software development support for less computationally intensive research projects. It then reviews some key ideas from the sociology of professions in the context of the software engineering profession, suggesting parallels between the current RSE professional movement and aspects of the history of software engineering. It concludes by suggesting some potential practical implications of these findings for the RSE movement and professional organizations.

Systematic Crosstalk Mitigation for Superconducting Qubits via Frequency-Aware Compilation

One of the key challenges in current Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) computers is to control a quantum system with high-fidelity quantum gates. There are many reasons a quantum gate can go wrong - for superconducting transmon qubits in particular, one major source of gate error is the unwanted crosstalk between neighboring qubits due to a phenomenon called frequency crowding. We motivate a systematic approach for understanding and mitigating the crosstalk noise when executing near-term quantum programs on superconducting NISQ computers. Here, we present a general software solution to alleviate frequency crowding by systematically tuning qubit frequencies according to input programs, trading parallelism for higher gate fidelity when necessary. The net result is that our work dramatically improves the crosstalk resilience of tunable-qubit, fixed-coupler hardware, matching or surpassing other more complex architectural designs such as tunable-coupler systems. On NISQ benchmarks, we improve worst-case program success rate by 13.3x on average, compared to existing traditional serialization strategies.
