Geophysical Impacts and Spectroscopic Identification of a Hydrous Iron Sulfate on Icy Worlds

Over geologic time-scales, large volumes of exogenic sulfur ions from Io's plasma torus have been supplied to the surface of Europa and Ganymede, which, combined with recent interpretations of orbiter images, dynamical modeling, and surface-subsurface exchange, suggests further sulfur transport into the interior of the icy worlds. These observations motivate mixed-phase spectral modeling for interpreting orbiter spectroscopy data and determination of hydration states of candidate surface materials including hydrous sulfates. In this work, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the low temperature and high pressure vibrational spectral signature of the iron-sulfate monohydrate endmember, szomolnokite (FeSO 4 ·H 2 O). By employing synchrotron Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in the diamond anvil cell up to 23 GPa and down to 20 K, we explore the extreme range of pressure-temperature domains relevant to icy environments throughout our solar system and beyond. Combined with our density-functional theory quantum-mechanics molecular dynamics results, we demonstrate that experimentally observed infrared features in the O-H stretching region commonly associated with nH 2 O (n > 1) hydration states can be attributed to a pure monohydrate without the need for pressure-induced exsolved ice, other coexisting hydrous iron sulfates, or strong overtone and combination modes. We further discuss the possibility of lateral variations in density and shear properties on icy worlds associated with temperature variations and the high-pressure phases of kieserite group monohydrated sulfates.

Compact and Low-cost Microinverter for Residential Systems

Concerns regarding climate change from the use of fossil fuels have expedited the growth of renewable energy sources. One such form of renewables, solar energy, is already playing and will continue to play a major role in meeting U.S clean energy targets. Expanding solar power usage in residential networks is a critical step in the decarbonization and clean electricity movement. To achieve a carbon-free grid by promoting solar power to the general public, an aggressive cost reduction in solar power systems is essential. The power density of the equipment used in the solar power system is necessary to solve the challenges of solar power installation. This project aims to research, explore, and assess the possibility of reducing the microinverter cost and volume to achieve the next generation microinverters (NGMs) targets for residential solar photovoltaic applications.

Unique W-Shape Y6 isomer as effective solid additive for High-Performance PM6:Y6 polymer solar cells

The current top-performing polymer solar cell (PSC) systems are mostly based on PM6:Y6 host blend. To date, numerous materials have been explored as the third component for these systems to form ternary blends or as additives. Vitrification agents are a group of additives proved to be useful in affecting the morphology of organic semiconductors. Here to design a suitable vitrification agent for non-fullerene electron acceptor Y6, an isomer strategy was explored where the thienothiophene wings of the Y6 molecule were inversed to form a W-shaped Y6 isomer of i-Y6. It was found that i-Y6 crystallized poorly with a different packing style than Y6 and could blend well in amorphous phase of Y6. These properties enabled i-Y6 to finely tune the morphology of PM6:Y6 blend at low additive dosages. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PM6:Y6 based PSC was raised from 16.827% to 17.433% at a dosage of Y6:i-Y6 ratio of 24:1. This work demonstrated isomerization as a viable strategy for developing solid additives for high performance PSC blends and vitrification agents as effective additives for tuning morphology and improving performances of PSCs.

Multilayer Silicon Carbide Composite Material Technology for High-Temperature Concentrated Solar-Thermal Power Components

In 2012, the U.S Department of Energy defined aggressive targets to achieve lower component costs and higher system efficiencies for concentrated solar-thermal power (CSP), and this, in turn, has led to the exploration of technology options that can operate at higher temperatures [1]. These next-generation CSP options, referred to as Generation 3 (a.k.a. Gen3), are targeting temperatures at or above 700 °C for the energy being delivered to the power cycle, and the more challenging plant conditions have necessitated a review and selection of alternative receiver heat transfer fluids as well as a search for materials that can meet the associated high-temperature component requirements. Nickel-based alloys are currently being considered, but these generally experience a significant drop in strength at temperatures > 775 °C [2] and may not be able to achieve corrosion and other lifetime requirements. Furthermore, these alloys are expensive, frequently have cost and schedule volatility, and offer little potential for lower cost at high production volumes. As an alternative, Ceramic Tubular Products, LLC (CTP) has developed a multilayer silicon carbide composite that can complement or replace alloys currently being considered for these Gen3 CSP applications.

Hybrid power plant design for low-carbon hydrogen in the United States

In this study, we provide a nationwide techno-economic analysis of clean hydrogen production powered by a hybrid renewable energy plant for over 50,000 locations in the United States. We leverage the open-source Hybrid Optimization Performance Platform (HOPP) tool to simulate the hourly performance of an off-grid wind-solar plant integrated with a 1-GW polymer exchange membrane electrolyzer system. The levelized cost of hydrogen is calculated for varying technology costs, and tax credits to explore cost sensitivities independent of plant design, performance, and site selection. Our findings suggest that strategies for cost reduction include selecting sites with abundant wind resources, complementary wind and solar resources, and optimizing the sizing of wind and solar assets to maximize the hybrid plant capacity factor. These strategies are linked to increased hydrogen production and reduced electrolyzer stack replacements, thereby lowering the overall cost of hydrogen.

Increased panel height enhances cooling for photovoltaic solar farms

We report solar photovoltaic (PV) systems suffer substantial efficiency loss due to environmental and internal heating. However, increasing the canopy height of these systems promotes surface heat transfer and boosts production. This work represents the first wind tunnel experiments to explore this concept in terms of array flow behavior and relative convective heat transfer, comparing model solar arrays of varied height arrangements - a nominal height, extended height, and a staggered height configuration. Analyses of surface thermocouple data show average Nusselt number (Nu) to increase with array elevation, where panel convection at double height improved up to 1.88 times that of the nominal case. This behavior is an effect of sub-array entrainment of high velocity flow and panel interactions as evidenced through flow statistics and mean kinetic energy budgets on particle image velocimetry (PIV) data. The staggered height arrangement encourages faster sub-panel flow than in the nominal array. Despite sub-array blockage due to the lower panel interaction, heat shedding at panel surfaces promotes improvements on over 1.3 times that of the nominal height case.

Multistage robust optimization for the day-ahead scheduling of hybrid thermal-hydro-wind-solar systems

The integration of large-scale uncertain and uncontrollable wind and solar power generation has brought new challenges to the operations of modern power systems. In a power system with abundant water resources, hydroelectric generation with high operational flexibility is a powerful tool to promote a higher penetration of wind and solar power generation. In this paper, we study the day-ahead scheduling of a thermal-hydro-wind-solar power system. The uncertainties of renewable energy generation, including uncertain natural water inflow and wind/solar power output, are taken into consideration. We explore how the operational flexibility of hydroelectric generation and the coordination of thermal-hydro power can be utilized to hedge against uncertain wind/solar power under a multistage robust optimization (MRO) framework. To address the computational issue, mixed decision rules are employed to reformulate the original MRO model with a multi-level structure into a bi-level one. Column-and-constraint generation (C &CG) algorithm is extended into the MRO case to solve the bi-level model. The proposed optimization approach is tested in three real-world cases. Furthermore, the computational results demonstrate the capability of hydroelectric generation to promote the accommodation of uncertain wind and solar power.

Introducing MEGASIM: Multitudinous Earth Greek/Trojan Asteroid SIMulation*

Abstract We announce the completion of two new Earth Trojan Asteroid (ETA) simulations. ETAs co-orbit the Sun with Earth and remain loosely bound to the fourth or fifth Lagrange points. To date, two ETAs have been detected (2010 TK 7 and 2020 XL 5 ); however, based on their orbits, these are likely temporary captures rather than members of a primordial population. The motivation for our simulations is multi-faceted: (1) the lack of a detected population despite literature claims of stability over the age of the solar system, (2) ETAs are important for both solar system science and planetary defense, and (3) the proximity of ETAs makes them prime candidates for space exploration missions. These simulations are of extremely high fidelity, large in number and long in simulation time. We will be releasing a series of papers based upon these simulations.

A Weather Analysis for Xcel Energy's 2030 Colorado Preferred Plan

The Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo), a subsidiary of Xcel Energy (Xcel), plans to meet its target of an 80% reduction in CO 2 emissions over 2005 levels by 2030 through its Preferred Plan1,2 that includes increasing the wind and solar energy on its system, reducing coal, and adjusting the operation and dispatch of new and existing thermal generation. The objective of our analysis reported here is to identify how the PSCo generation and transmission of its Preferred Plan might operate in the face of specific weather events. We investigate weather events that currently cause stress to PSCo’s system, such as winter storms and extreme heat. In addition, we explore how the future system responds to scenarios that may be considered normal weather conditions today, but that have a large impact on wind and solar generation potential.

Mildly Hierarchical Triple Dynamics and Applications to the Outer Solar System

Three-body interactions are ubiquitous in astrophysics. For instance, Kozai–Lidov oscillations in hierarchical triple systems have been studied extensively and applied to a wide range of astrophysical systems. However, mildly hierarchical triples also play an important role, but they are less explored. In this work, we consider the secular dynamics of a test particle in a mildly hierarchical configuration. We find the limit within which the secular approximation is reliable when the outer perturber is in a circular orbit. In addition, we present resonances and chaotic regions using surface-of-section plots, and characterize regions of phase space that allow large eccentricity and inclination variations. Finally, we apply the secular results to the outer Solar System. We focus on the distribution of extreme trans-Neptunian objects (eTNOs) under the perturbation of a possible outer planet (Planet 9), and find that in addition to a low-inclination Planet 9, a polar or a counter-orbiting one could also produce pericenter clustering of eTNOs, while the polar one leads to a wider spread of eTNO inclinations.

Modular HF Isolated MV String Inverters Enable a New Paradigm for Large PV Farms

The “Modular HF Isolated MV String Inverters Enable a New Paradigm for Large PV Farms” project focuses on exploring alternative power converter and system-level plant configurations to achieve the lowest cost and highest energy output for a given solar plus storage (e.g., PV + battery) plant, including the use of medium voltage (MV) collection while taking into account detailed models of all elements. To realize this objective, four approaches were utilized (i) employ a novel Medium Voltage String Inverter (MVSI) topology (soft switching solid state transformer – S4T) to convert 1000 Vdc to 4.16 kVac; (ii) plant collection using standard, low-cost overhead MV distribution network; (iii) enable energy storage integration without additional converter cost to achieve dispatchability of the PV resource; and (iv) provide advanced functionality (autonomous operation, track ISO signals for dynamic balancing and ancillary services, and PV farm operation as a virtual grid resource). Subsequently and in alignment with the previously mentioned approaches, the project was structured in five efforts (i) S4T MVSI simulation and design; (ii) system analysis and storage optimization; (iii) financial analysis; (iv) power converter prototype build and test; and (v) regulatory and commercial impact study. The outcomes provided by each effort can be summarized as follows (i) Project explored the use of MV AC distribution architecture for hybrid PV+storage utility-scale PV farms; (ii) Detailed loss and LCOE analysis for AC and DC side BESS architecture, including multiple converter topologies, as well as for proposed MVSI/MDCT systems; (iii) MVSI was built and holds promise but needs lower-cost high-voltage Si-C devices, which does not seem possible in the near term; (iv) MDCT provides a simpler modular building block – validated through HIL and farm level modeling, simulation and experimental validation; (v) 300 kVA MDCT prototype built and tested, technology is being commercialized; and (vi) Regulatory model of utility building PV plants, where PV panels are treated as DC generation (IPP), seems viable and can allow improved grid integration.

Enabling Floating Solar Photovoltaic (FPV) Deployment: Exploring the Operational Benefits of Floating Solar-Hydropower Hybrids

The Southeast (SE) Asia region is undergoing rapid energy sector transitions and exploring the potential role of renewables - including solar photovoltaics (PV) - as it becomes increasingly competitive as a result of technological advances and falling capital costs. Low-cost solar PV provides countries in the region with an option to meet increasing energy demand and diversify generation portfolios, complementing hydropower and thermal-dominant systems and strengthening energy security throughout the region. Floating solar PV (FPV) has emerged as an attractive application of solar PV that allows for systems to be floated on water bodies. Pairing FPV in hybrid systems with hydropower may also provide significant value for power systems in the region, beyond oft-cited co-benefits of stand-alone FPV. Despite growing interest in FPV systems, few applications of hybrid FPV-hydropower systems exist in SE Asia, and limited information is available about the co-benefits these systems may provide for potential adopters. This work, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Advanced Energy Partnership for Asia, explores the value that hybrid FPV-hydropower systems may provide to the power systems of SE Asian countries. This work on the value of hybrid FPV-hydropower systems is accompanied by a recent report, Creating an Enabling Policy and Regulatory Environment for Floating Solar Photovoltaics: Review of Barriers to FPV Deployment in Southeast Asia, also focused on SE Asia.

Exploring Renewable Energy Opportunities in Select Southeast Asian Countries: A Geospatial Analysis of the Levelized Cost of Energy of Utility-Scale Wind and Solar Photovoltaics

The costs of renewable energy-based electricity generation have fallen precipitously in recent years to levels that are increasingly competitive with traditional generation such as fossil fuel-based generation. As these costs become increasingly competitive, private developers, policymakers, and energy system planners are searching for opportunities to harness high-quality renewable energy resources. Developing economies are setting ambitious targets and exploring how cost-effective, grid-connected renewable energy options can help power economic growth and meet growing electricity demands. This includes the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that are determined to reach a target of 23% of renewable energy in the region's total primary energy supply by 2025. A critical gap to identifying opportunities and scaling up renewable energy is the lack of quality data and analyses to support decisions on the investment and deployment of renewables - including wind and solar photovoltaics (PV). This work supports decision making by providing high-quality data and spatial analysis of the cost of utility-scale wind and solar PV generation in select countries of Southeast Asia - specifically, the ASEAN member states. Generation costs are expressed as the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) - a commonly used metric that represents the net present value of the unit cost of electricity during the lifetime of a particular electricity generation technology. This is the first spatial estimate of LCOE for these technologies within the ASEAN member states - providing insights into the roles that renewable energy resource quality and other factors may play in generation costs.

Mitigating Voltage Instability in the Saudi Grid for a Decarbonized, Fully Solar Power System

Lately, solar photovoltaic (PV) has received significant interest due to its economic and environmental benefits. As the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) increases into existing power grids, challenges such as the decrease in short circuit ratio (SCR) are introduced. Here, this paper investigates a case study of the Saudi power grid, examining the voltage stability as the grid transitions from traditional power generation to 100% penetration of solar PV gradually. Moreover, the paper explores the relationship between the increase in solar penetration and the potential effects on the short circuit MVA (SCMVA), which could significantly impact the overall SCR of the system. To meet the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) recommendation of maintaining SCR at a particular level, synchronous condensers (SC)s were integrated into the grid. The effectiveness of utilizing SCs to maintain the system voltage at optimal levels in a fully solar grid is also considered. In addition, this paper covers the weak grid analysis via utilizing the Newton-Raphson load flow method, along with PV and QV curve analyses. The purpose behind that is to determine weak bus locations in need of voltage improvements, and to meet the amount of reactive power to be injected. Finally, the amount of power being delivered by SCs will be added progressively in three scenarios to show the enhancements on SCR more precisely.

HD 222925: A New Opportunity to Explore the Astrophysical and Nuclear Conditions of r-process Sites

Abstract With the most trans-iron elements detected of any star outside the solar system, HD 222925 represents the most complete chemical inventory among metal-poor stars enhanced with elements made by the rapid neutron capture (“ r ”) process. As such, HD 222925 may be a new “template” for the observational r -process, where before the (much higher-metallicity) solar r -process residuals were used. In this work, we test under which conditions a single site accounts for the entire elemental r -process abundance pattern of HD 222925. We found that several of our tests—with the single exception of the black hole–neutron star merger case—challenge the single-site assumption by producing an ejecta distribution that is highly constrained, in disagreement with simulation predictions. However, we found that ejecta distributions that are more in line with simulations can be obtained under the condition that the nuclear data near the second r -process peak are changed. Therefore, for HD 222925 to be a canonical r -process template likely as a product of a single astrophysical source, the nuclear data need to be reevaluated. The new elemental abundance pattern of HD 222925—including the abundances obtained from space-based, ultraviolet (UV) data—call for a deeper understanding of both astrophysical r -process sites and nuclear data. Similar UV observations of additional r -process–enhanced stars will be required to determine whether the elemental abundance pattern of HD 222925 is indeed a canonical template (or an outlier) for the r -process at low metallicity.
