Oscillation of laser-beam intensity as observed with beam splitters

Characteristics of nearly perfectly flat beam splitter for observing laser pulse shapes are discussed. Disadvantages of conventional instruments for observing properties of laser beams are described. Effects of high frequency noise on accuracy of measurement are reported.

Aero-acoustic design and test of a multiple splitter exhaust noise suppressor for a 0.914m diameter lift fan

A lift fan exhaust suppression system to meet future VTOL aircraft noise goals was designed and tested. The test vehicle was a 1.3 pressure ratio, 36 inch (91.44 cm) diameter lift fan with two chord rotor to stator spacing. A two splitter fan exhaust suppression system thirty inches (76.2 cm) long achieved 10 PNdB exhaust suppression in the aft quadrant compared to a design value of 20 PNdB. It was found that a broadband noise floor limited the realizable suppression. An analytical investigation of broadband noise generated by flow over the treatment surfaces provided very good agreement with the measured suppression levels and noise floor sound power levels. A fan thrust decrement of 22% was measured for the fully suppressed configuration of which 11.1% was attributed to the exhaust suppression hardware.

Application of radial-splitters for improved wide-angle diffuser performance in a blowdown tunnel

Severe flow separation in the 15:1 area-ratio, 38 deg total angle conical diffuser preceding the settling-chamber of an intermittent blowdown wind tunnel was eliminated by the use of a novel radial-splitter arrangement. As a consequence, the operating life of settling-chamber screens was greatly extended and test-section flow steadiness improved, with no penalty in the tunnel running time.

Splitter-bladed centrifugal compressor impeller designed for automotive gas turbine application

Mechanical design and fabrication of two splitter-bladed centrifugal compressor impellers were completed for rig testing at NASA Lewis Research Center. These impellers were designed for automotive gas turbine application. The mechanical design was based on NASA specifications for blade-shape and flowpath configurations. The contractor made engineering drawings and performed calculations for mass and center-of-gravity, for stress and vibration analyses, and for shaft critical speed analysis. One impeller was machined to print; the other had a blade height and exit radius of 2.54 mm larger than print dimensions.

A chevron beam-splitter interferometer

Fully tilt compensated double-pass chevron beam splitter, that removes channelling effects and permits optical phase tuning, is wavelength independent and allows small errors in alignment that are not tolerated in Michelson, Machzender, or Sagnac interferometers. Device is very useful in experiments where background vibration affects conventional interferometers.

Beam Splitter Intensities Are Preselected

New beam splitter is a block of optically clear material with two parallel polish faces. Some of area of one surface is coated with totally reflecting layer, which may be metal or dielectric. On opposite surface, a metal coating of stepped thickness offers a different reflectivity at each step. Width and spacing of reflecting zones are chosen to accommodate angle of spacing of incidence of input beam and desired spacing of ouput beams.

Optical Mounts for Cryogenic Beam Splitters

Spring-loaded optical mounts maintain flatness and alinement of rigid, framed, or pellicle beam splitters over wide temperature range, despite differences in thermal expansion amoung materials. Mounts permit optical adjustments at ambient temperature even though optical system operated subsequently within few degrees of absolute zero. Mounts useful as holders for integrated-circuit master patterns, survey targets, vibrating membranes, noise- or pressure-sensing membranes, osmosis filters, and fuel-cell elements.

Positioning X-Ray Film Inside A Flow Splitter

Simple and inexpensive tool ensures secure placement for radiographic inspection. Holder places film positively and securely for x-ray inspection inside sections of tube with splitter welds. V-shaped piece of film fits on arms of holder. With arms squeezed together, holder inserted in opening of neck. Arms of holder cut from 0.020-in. (0.51-mm) thick stock of unspecified material.

Effect of velocity ratio on plane mixing layer development - Influence of the splitter plate wake

The effect of the velocity ratio on the approach of a plane mixing layer to self-similarity was investigated experimentally. In the experiment, plane mixing layers with velocity ratios 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 0.9 were generated in a mixing-layer wind tunnel consisting of two individually driven legs, in which the two streams were allowed to merge at the sharp edge of a tappered splitter plate. The leg driven by the bigger blower was operated at a free-stream velocity in the test section of 21 m/s, while the flow speed in the other leg was varied to change the velocity ratio. For each velocity ratio, the mean flow- and turbulence measurements were carried out at eight streamwise locations. Results showed that, for velocity ratios between 0.5 and 0.7, self-similarity of the mixing layer was achieved, with the asymptotic states comparable; mixing layers with higher velocity ratios failed to achieve a self-similar state within the measurement domain.

Flow Splitter For Measuring Large Leaks

Flow splitter increases size of leak measured by helium mass-spectrometer leak detector. Multiplies maximum measurable rate of leakage by factor of 1,000. Leaking gas flows into manifold, where small fraction of flow diverted to leak detector. Bulk of flow removed by mechanical vacuum pump.

Dielectric Waveguides Splitter and Hybrid/Isolator for Bidirectional Link

A system, method, device, and apparatus provide a dielectric waveguide splitter/bi-directional link. A dielectric substrate fabricated into a first Y-junction waveguide with a first port splitting into a first branch leading to a second port and a second branch leading to a third port. An angle between the first branch and the second branch is below ninety degrees (90.degree.). The dielectric waveguide splitter enables millimeter-wave (mmWave) transmission between the first port and the second port while reducing feedback of the mmWave between the second and third port. Two Y-junction waveguides may be fabricated back-to-back to provide simultaneous bidirectional mmWave transmission at a single frequency.

Thermoelectric current in a graphene Cooper pair splitter

Generation of electric voltage in a conductor by applying a temperature gradient is a fundamental phenomenon called the Seebeck effect. This effect and its inverse is widely exploited in diverse applications ranging from thermoelectric power generators to temperature sensing. Recently, a possibility of thermoelectricity arising from the interplay of the non-local Cooper pair splitting and the elastic co-tunneling in the hybrid normal metal-superconductor-normal metal structures was predicted. Here, we report the observation of the non-local Seebeck effect in a graphene-based Cooper pair splitting device comprising two quantum dots connected to an aluminum superconductor and present a theoretical description of this phenomenon. The observed non-local Seebeck effect offers an efficient tool for producing entangled electrons.

DESIGNING THE SPREADERS AND SPLITTERS FOR THE FFA@CEBAF ENERGY UPGRADE

A degrader device is being built at the CEBAF injector to degrade the electron beam phase space for machine acceptance studies. The electron beam is degraded through multiple scattering in a thin target before further transport in the injector beamline for injection into CEBAF. The degraded electron beam will approximate phase space distributions expected from a bremsstrahlung-based polarized positron source as in the PEPPo method. The effort is in broader support of the Ce+BAF positron capability that is currently under study. Two options for the degrader device are considered, and simulation results are presented.
