Statistical Analysis of Rounded Data: Measurement Errors vs Rounding Errors

Since data for statistical analysis are always given in a discretized form, observations contain not only measurement errors but also rounding errors which are determined by the discretization step. In this paper we consider situations where the rounding errors are considerable: they are comparable to or even greater (in average) than the measurement errors. It is shown that it can be reasonable to increase the measurement errors in order to reduce the error of the final result.

Review and statistical analysis of the ultrasonic velocity method for estimating the porosity fraction in polycrystalline materials

A review and statistical analysis of the ultrasonic velocity method for estimating the porosity fraction in polycrystalline materials is presented. Initially, a semi-empirical model is developed showing the origin of the linear relationship between ultrasonic velocity and porosity fraction. Then, from a compilation of data produced by many researchers, scatter plots of velocity versus percent porosity data are shown for Al2O3, MgO, porcelain-based ceramics, PZT, SiC, Si3N4, steel, tungsten, UO2,(U0.30Pu0.70)C, and YBa2Cu3O(7-x). Linear regression analysis produced predicted slope, intercept, correlation coefficient, level of significance, and confidence interval statistics for the data. Velocity values predicted from regression analysis for fully-dense materials are in good agreement with those calculated from elastic properties.

The Prompt-afterglow Connection in Gamma-ray Bursts: a Comprehensive Statistical Analysis of Swift X-ray Light-curves

We present a comprehensive statistical analysis of Swift X-ray light-curves of Gamma- Ray Bursts (GRBs) collecting data from more than 650 GRBs discovered by Swift and other facilities. The unprecedented sample size allows us to constrain the rest-frame X-ray properties of GRBs from a statistical perspective, with particular reference to intrinsic time scales and the energetics of the different light-curve phases in a common rest-frame 0.3-30 keV energy band. Temporal variability episodes are also studied and their properties constrained. Two fundamental questions drive this effort: i) Does the X-ray emission retain any kind of "memory" of the prompt γ-ray phase? ii) Where is the dividing line between long and short GRB X-ray properties? We show that short GRBs decay faster, are less luminous and less energetic than long GRBs in the X-rays, but are interestingly characterized by similar intrinsic absorption. We furthermore reveal the existence of a number of statistically significant relations that link the X-ray to prompt γ-ray parameters in long GRBs; short GRBs are outliers of the majority of these 2-parameter relations. However and more importantly, we report on the existence of a universal 3-parameter scaling that links the X-ray and the γ-ray energy to the prompt spectral peak energy of both long and short GRBs: E(sub X,iso)∝ E(sup 1.00+/-0.06)(sub γ,iso) /E(sup 0.60+/-0.10)(sub pk).

Statistical analysis of trim maneuvers in low thrust interplanetary navigation

An analytical technique for the statistical analysis of a low thrust trim maneuver in interplanetary navigation has been developed. The maneuver is treated rigorously as a nonlinear function of the trajectory errors to be removed, and the corresponding nongaussian statistics are developed. The method determines the statistical properties of the maneuver direction and duration, as well as the final state dispersion covariance. The analytical technique is applied to the terminal maneuver in a 1980 Encke slow flyby mission and is found to yield accurate statistical results with much less effort than Monte Carlo simulation. The method permits consideration of a shorter terminal maneuver than does linear analysis, with a consequent improvement in delivery accuracy.

Corrosion of rebar in concrete. Part II: Literature survey and statistical analysis of existing data on chloride threshold

The literature is reviewed with respect to defining, measuring, and interpreting the chloride threshold (CT). CT was defined with a strong fundamental basis in the Point Defect Model. which also dictates the nature of the statistical analysis of surveyed CT values. A database of CT for various primary and secondary independent variables has been established. Statistical analyses reveal that CT is lognormally distributed, in accordance with the PDM, with most probable values being 0.85, 0.69, and 1.19 for %total Cl/cem, %free Cl/cem, and [Cl - ]/[OH - ], respectively. The breakdown and corrosion potentials follow normal distributions with means of 0.056 and -0.322 V SCE , respectively.

Statistical analysis of S—N type environmental fatigue data of Ni-base alloy welds using weibull distribution

In this study, the probabilistic fatigue life model for Ni-base alloys was developed based on the Weibull distribution using statistical analysis of fatigue data reported in NUREG/CR-6909 and the new fatigue data of Alloy 52M/152 and 82/182. The developed Weibull model can consider right-censored data (i.e., non-failed data) and quantify the improved safety (or reliability) based on the level of failure probability. The overall margin in the current fatigue design limit model (ASME design curve + NUREG/CR-6909 F en model) is similar to that of the Weibull model with a cumulative failure probability of approximately 2.5%. The margin in the current fatigue design limit model demonstrated inconsistencies for the Ni-base alloy weld data, whereas the Weibull model showed a consistent margin. Therefore, the Weibull model can systematically mitigate the excessive safety margin.

A statistical analysis of the Einstein normal galaxy sample. I - Spiral and irregular galaxies

The results of a statistical analysis of 48 spiral and irregular galaxies observed with the Einstein Observatory are reported. It is found that the X-ray luminosity is not directly correlated with the mass of the galaxies, but is strongly correlated with the blue luminosity. This suggests that most X-ray sources, including low-mass binaries, are binary systems belonging to both old disk and young arm Population I components. A real bulge population of X-ray sources exists that can contribute significantly to the X-ray luminosity of early-type spirals. The X-ray emission from a sample of 29 relatively isolated, normal elliptical and S0 galaxies is also studied, and the results are compared to those for the above sample to investigate the origin of the X-ray emission in early-type galaxies and the possible emission mechanisms. The influence of a powerful radio source and the onset of nuclear activity are also examined.

A statistical analysis of IUE spectra of dwarf novae and nova-like stars

First results of a statistical analysis of the IUE International Ultraviolet Explorer archive on dwarf novae and nova like stars are presented. The archive contains approximately 2000 low resolution spectra of somewhat over 100 dwarf novae and nova like stars. Many of these were looked at individually, but so far the collective information content of this set of data has not been explored. The first results of work are reported.

Statistical analysis of static shape control in space structures

The article addresses the problem of efficient analysis of the statistics of initial and corrected shape distortions in space structures. Two approaches for improving efficiency are considered. One is an adjoint technique for calculating distortion shapes: the second is a modal expansion of distortion shapes in terms of pseudo-vibration modes. The two techniques are applied to the problem of optimizing actuator locations on a 55 m radiometer antenna. The adjoint analysis technique is used with a discrete-variable optimization method. The modal approximation technique is coupled with a standard conjugate-gradient continuous optimization method. The agreement between the two sets of results is good, validating both the approximate analysis and optimality of the results.

Inter‐area oscillation statistical analysis of the U.S. Eastern interconnection

Although extensive studies have been conducted on inter‐area oscillation detection and analysis by using phasor measurement data, few have focused on inter‐area oscillation statistics due to the lack of considerably long‐term and high‐resolution recorded data. A preliminary statistical analysis on the inter‐area oscillations that occurred in the U.S. Eastern interconnection from 2010 to 2015 is presented. These oscillation events were captured and recorded by the wide‐area frequency monitoring network FNET/GridEye. Oscillation occurrence, dominant frequency, damping ratio and oscillation excitation types are investigated to explore the statistical characteristics of the detected inter‐area oscillations. The results from this paper will provide valuable information for system operators and planners regarding network operation and future grid development.
