Enhancing the multi-functional properties of renewable lignin carbon fibers via defining the structure–property relationship using different biomass feedstocks

Lignin has been explored extensively as a renewable precursor for carbon materials, considering its abundance as a major component of plant cell walls and its sustainability as a byproduct of both lignocellulosic biorefinery and the paper-making industry. Despite the extensive efforts to define the process–property relationship, it remains largely unknown how lignin biosynthesis and its chemistry would impact the resultant carbon fiber properties, for both mechanical and electroconductive performances. Such inadequate understanding fundamentally limits feedstock design and selection to improve carbon fiber properties toward broader commercial applications. Using lignin from a broad range of biomass feedstocks for carbon fiber manufacturing, we have fundamentally explored the structure–function relationship between lignin chemistry and carbon fiber performance. Specifically, lignin extracted from hardwood (sugar maple), softwood (loblolly pine and red cedar), and herbaceous plants (corn stover and switchgrass) was used for carbon fiber manufacturing, considering the very different lignin structures from these feedstocks. Linear regression models were established to define the relationship between carbon fiber mechanical properties and lignin structural characteristics. The results highlighted that the content of β-O-4 linkages correlates significantly with the tensile strength and elastic modulus of lignin carbon fibers, indicating that more linear β-O-4 linkages would promote the carbon fiber mechanical performance. Moreover, electroconductive properties are essential for broader energy device application of lignin-based carbon fibers, yet the mechanisms controlling their electroconductivity are largely unknown. Furthermore, we hereby demonstrated that a higher β-O-4 content also promotes the electroconductivity of lignin carbon fibers. Microstructure analysis further revealed that the crystallite size and content of the pre-graphitic turbostratic carbon structure in lignin-based carbon fibers were enhanced as the β-O-4 linkages increased. The content of β-O-4 linkages has shown a strong correlation with the crystallite content in a linear regression model. This study thus revealed the underlying mechanisms regarding how the lignin structure in planta defines the resultant carbon fiber properties. Moreover, the study also highlighted the correlation between the mechanical and electroconductive properties of lignin-based carbon fibers, both of which were defined by the lignin structure.

Structural properties of superplastically formed/diffusion-bonded orthogonally corrugated core sandwich plates

This paper describes a new superplastically formed/diffusion-bonded (SPF/DB) orthogonally corrugated sandwich structure, and presents formulae and the associated plots for evaluating the effective elastic constants for the core of this new sandwich structure. Comparison of structural properties of this new sandwich structure with the conventional honeycomb core sandwich structure was made under the condition of equal sandwich density. It was found that the SPF/DB orthogonally corrugated sandwich core has higher transverse shear stiffness than the conventional honeycomb sandwich core. However, the former has lower stiffness in the sandwich core thickness direction than the latter.

A Comparative Study of the Efficacy of Local/Global and Parametric/Nonparametric Machine Learning Methods for Establishing Structure–Property Linkages in High-Contrast 3D Elastic Composites

Reduced-order structure–property (S-P) linkages play a pivotal role in the tailored design of materials for advanced engineering components. There is a critical need to distill these from the simulation datasets aggregated using sophisticated, computationally expensive, physics-based numerical tools (e.g., finite element methods). The recent emergence of materials data science approaches has opened new avenues for addressing this challenge. In this paper, we critically compare the relative merits of the application of four distinct machine learning approaches for their efficacy in extracting microstructure-property linkages from the finite element simulation data aggregated on high-contrast elastic composites with different microstructures. The machine learning approaches selected for the study have included different combinations of local/global and parametric/nonparametric approaches. Furthermore, the nonparametric approaches selected for this study are based on Gaussian Process (GP) models that allow for a formal treatment of uncertainty quantification in the predicted values. The predictive performances of these different approaches have been compared against each other using rigorous cross-validation error metrics. Furthermore, their sensitivity to both the dataset size and dimensionality has been investigated.

Strain induced electronic structure, and magnetic and structural properties in quaternary Heusler alloys ZrRhTiZ (Z = Al, In)

In this work, electronic structure, and magnetic and structural properties of quaternary Heusler alloys ZrRhTiZ (Z = Al, In) have been analyzed from first principles calculations. The ferromagnetic ground state and thermodynamical stability of these compounds are supported by relative total energies, and by derived formation and cohesive energies, respectively. The investigated Curie temperatures of the compounds exceed room temperature indicating that these compounds are promising candidates for beyond room temperature spintronics and magneto-electronics applications. Both compounds follow the Slater-Pauling 18 electron rule and exhibit half-metallic ferromagnetic behavior with magnetic moments of 2 μB with 100% spin polarization in one spin channel at the Fermi-level. The effect of uniform strain on half-metallicity of these compounds inverts the band gap from one spin channel to another spin channel with a mixed spin (magnetic moment) regime that can be mapped to an exchange bias like effect observed in some of the magnetic Heusler compounds. The half metallic ferromagnetic behavior is retained within –2 to 2% strain contrasting with the anomalous spin flip in –1% and 1% strain in ZrRhTiZ (Z = Al, In).

Process-structure-property relationships for droplet-on-demand liquid-metal-jetted parts

Liquid metal jetting droplet-on-demand additive manufacturing is an attractive alternative to industry-standard, laser-based metal additive manufacturing techniques that use powder feedstocks and produce large heat affected zones. Liquid metal jetting provides a low feedstock footprint, minimal materials waste, less contamination and inclusions from feedstock, and is compatible with a large range of materials. However, little has been reported on the liquid metal jetting process-structure-property relationships that are crucial to understanding how to consistently print high quality metal parts. We investigate the effects of build plate temperature, infill pattern, and track raster rate on the macro- and microstructure, density, hardness, and tensile strength of metal parts created with our custom droplet-on-demand setup using pure tin feedstock as a surrogate for more relevant structural materials. We found that although the build plate temperature had the largest influence on the structure and properties, the infill pattern is an important factor for optimal structural integrity. It was observed that the track raster rate influenced track-to-track porosity and should be considered in toolpath development. Despite printing in ambient air, we could not identify oxide on the surface or in the bulk of the parts and saw no adverse effects on microstructure or tensile performance. The results and methods of this study will help guide future work in optimizing the liquid metal jetting process to reliably print parts using any liquid metal jetting system for a wide variety of metal feedstocks.

Electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of CoVMnSb: Ab initio study

We present computational results on electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of CoVMnSb, a quaternary Heusler alloy. Our calculations indicate that this material may crystallize in two energetically close structural phases: inverted and regular cubic. The inverted cubic phase is the ground state, with ferrimagnetic alignment, and around 80% spin polarization. Despite having a relatively large bandgap in the minority-spin channel close to the Fermi level, this phase does not undergo a half-metallic transition under pressure. This is explained by the “pinning” of the Fermi level at the minority-spin states at the Γ point. At the same time, the regular cubic phase is half-metallic and retains its perfect spin polarization under a wide range of mechanical strain. Transition to a regular cubic phase may be attained by applying uniform pressure (but not biaxial strain). In practice, this pressure may be realized by an atomic substitution of non-magnetic atoms (Sb) with another non-magnetic atom (Si) of a smaller radius. Our calculations indicate that 25% substitution of Sb with Si results in a half-metallic regular cubic phase being the ground state. In addition, CoVMnSb0.5Si0.5 retains its half-metallic properties under a considerable range of mechanical pressure, as well as exhibits thermodynamic stability, thus making this alloy attractive for potential spintronic applications. We hope that the presented results will stimulate experimental efforts to synthesize this compound.

Electrical and structural properties of VO 2 in an electric field

We examined the electrical and local structural properties of a VO 2 film at different electric fields using electrical resistance and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at the V K edge in the temperature range of 30–100 °C. The T c value of the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) during both heating and cooling decreases with electric field. When the electric field exceeds a certain value, the MIT becomes sharper due to Joule heating. Furthermore, the MIT, the structural phase transition (SPT), and the pre-edge peak transition of the VO 2 do not congruently occur at a uniform temperature. A metallic VO 2 is observed in only the rutile (or M2) symmetry. An electric field induces a substantial amount of conduction electrons in insulating VO 2 . Simultaneously measured resistance and XAFS reveal that Joule heating caused by an external electric field significantly affects the MIT and SPT of VO 2 .

The effects of elevated temperatures on the structural properties of fiber composite materials suitable for use in space shuttle and other space vehicles

The effects of high temperatures on the structural properties of fiber composite materials for use in spacecraft structures are investigated. Various mechanical properties of boron reinforced aluminum alloys were measured. It was observed that cycling these materials through temperatures that varied from room temperature to 425 C could seriously degrade the properties. The extent of the observed effects depended on alloy type and the maximum cyclic temperature used. Results are discussed in terms of upper and lower strength bonds calculated from the strengths of individual fibers.

Process-Structure-Property Modeling for Severe Plastic Deformation Processes Using Orientation Imaging Microscopy and Data-Driven Techniques

Machining is a severe plastic deformation process, wherein the workpiece material is subjected to high deformation rates and temperatures. During metal machining, the dynamic recrystallization mechanism causes grain refinement into the sub-micron range. In this study, we investigate the microstructure evolution of oxygen-free high conductivity copper (OFHC Cu) subject to a machining process where the cutting speed and rake angle are controlled to manipulate the process strain, strain rate, and temperatures. Microstructures of the deformed chips are quantified using orientation imaging microscopy and novel statistical descriptors that capture the morphology and local lattice misorientations generated during the several mechanistic stages of the dynamic recrystallization process. Mechanical properties of the resulting chips are quantified using spherical nanoindentation protocols. A multiple output Gaussian process regression model is used to simultaneously model the structure-property evolution, which differs from more common approaches that establish such relationships sequentially. This modeling strategy is particularly attractive since it can flexibly provide both structure and property uncertainty estimates. In addition, the statistical modeling framework allows for the inclusion of multi-fidelity data. The statistical metrics utilized serve as efficient microstructure descriptors, which retain the physics of the observed structures without having to introduce ad hoc microstructure feature definitions.

Symmetry-mode analysis for intuitive observation of structure-property relationships in the lead-free antiferroelectric (1-x)AgNbO 3 -xLiTaO 3

Functional materials are of critical importance to electronic and smart devices. A deep understanding of the structure–property relationship is essential for designing new materials. In this work, instead of utilizing conventional atomic coordinates, a symmetry-mode approach is successfully used to conduct structure refinement of the neutron powder diffraction data of (1-x)AgNbO3–xLiTaO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.09) ceramics. This provides rich structural information that not only clarifies the controversial symmetry assigned to pure AgNbO3 but also explains well the detailed structural evolution of (1-x)AgNbO3–xLiTaO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.09) ceramics, and builds a comprehensive and straightforward relationship between structural distortion and electrical properties. It is concluded that there are four relatively large-amplitude major modes that dominate the distorted Pmc21 structure of pure AgNbO3, namely a Λ3 antiferroelectric mode, a T4+ a-a-c0 octahedral tilting mode, an H2 a0a0c+/a0a0c- octahedral tilting mode and a Γ4- ferroelectric mode. The H2 and Λ3 modes become progressively inactive with increasing x and their destabilization is the driving force behind the composition-driven phase transition between the Pmc21 and R3c phases. This structural variation is consistent with the trend observed in the measured temperature-dependent dielectric properties and polarization–electric field (P-E) hysteresis loops. The mode crystallography applied in this study provides a strategy for optimizing related properties by tuning the amplitudes of the corresponding modes in these novel AgNbO3-based (anti)ferroelectric materials.

Improved band gaps and structural properties from Wannier–Fermi–Löwdin self-interaction corrections for periodic systems

The accurate prediction of band gaps and structural properties in periodic systems continues to be one of the central goals of electronic structure theory. However, band gaps obtained from popular exchange–correlation (XC) functionals (such as LDA and PBE) are severely underestimated partly due to the spurious self-interaction error (SIE) inherent to these functionals. In this work, we present a new formulation and implementation of Wannier function-derived Fermi–Löwdin (WFL) orbitals for correcting the SIE in periodic systems. Since our approach utilizes a variational minimization of the self-interaction energy with respect to the Wannier charge centers (WCC), it is computationally more efficient than the HSE hybrid functional and other self-interaction corrections that require a large number of transformation matrix elements. Here, calculations on several (17 in total) prototypical molecular solids, semiconductors, and wide-bandgap materials show that our WFL self-interaction correction approach gives better band gaps and bulk moduli compared to semilocal functionals, largely due to the partial removal of self-interaction errors.

Sequence-Structure–Property Relationships in Short-Chain Polyesters: How Primary Structure Governs Macroscopic Performance

While polymer properties are fundamentally linked to their nanostructure, the influence of monomer sequence remains less understood than stereochemical factors like tacticity. This study examines how sequence distribution affects the thermal behavior and morphology of homo- and copolyesters, specifically comparing polymers derived from constitutionally identical monomers but with varying degrees of sequence regularity depending on monomer structure or polymerization selectivity. Our findings show that increasing sequence defects progressively diminish thermal stability, crystallinity, melting temperatures, and morphological order. As new materials become more compositionally complex, this work underscores the importance of sequence control in the design of advanced polymers for emerging applications.

Design of intrinsically disordered protein variants with diverse structural properties

Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) perform a broad range of functions in biology, suggesting that the ability to design IDPs could help expand the repertoire of proteins with novel functions. Computational design of IDPs with specific conformational properties has, however, been difficult because of their substantial dynamics and structural complexity. We describe a general algorithm for designing IDPs with specific structural properties. We demonstrate the power of the algorithm by generating variants of naturally occurring IDPs that differ in compaction, long-range contacts, and propensity to phase separate. We experimentally tested and validated our designs and analyzed the sequence features that determine conformations. We show how our results are captured by a machine learning model, enabling us to speed up the algorithm. Our work expands the toolbox for computational protein design and will facilitate the design of proteins whose functions exploit the many properties afforded by protein disorder.

Structural Properties and Estimation of Delay Systems

Two areas in the theory of delay systems were studied: structural properties and their applications to feedback control, and optimal linear and nonlinear estimation. The concepts of controllability, stabilizability, observability, and detectability were investigated. The property of pointwise degeneracy of linear time-invariant delay systems is considered. Necessary and sufficient conditions for three dimensional linear systems to be made pointwise degenerate by delay feedback were obtained, while sufficient conditions for this to be possible are given for higher dimensional linear systems. These results were applied to obtain solvability conditions for the minimum time output zeroing control problem by delay feedback. A representation theorem is given for conditional moment functionals of general nonlinear stochastic delay systems, and stochastic differential equations are derived for conditional moment functionals satisfying certain smoothness properties.
