Exciton-vibrational dynamics induces efficient self-trapping in a substituted nanoring

Cycloparaphenylenes, being the smallest segments of carbon nanotubes, have emerged as prototypes of the simplest carbon nanohoops. Their unique structure–dynamics–optical properties relationships have motivated a wide variety of synthesis of new related nanohoop species. Studies of how chemical changes, introduced in these new materials, lead to systems with new structural, dynamics and optical properties, expand their functionalities for optoelectronics applications. Herein, we study the effect that conjugation extension of a cycloparaphenylene through the introduction of a satellite tetraphenyl substitution has on its structural and dynamical properties. Our non-adiabatic excited state molecular dynamics simulations suggest that this substitution accelerates the electronic relaxation from the high-energy band to the lowest excited state. This is partially due to efficient conjugation achieved between specific phenyl units as introduced by the tetraphenyl substitution. We observe a particular exciton redistribution during relaxation, in which the tetraphenyl substitution plays a significant role. As a result, an efficient inter-band energy transfer takes place. Besides, the observed phonon-exciton interplay induces a significant exciton self-trapping. Finally, our results encourage and guide the future studies of new phenyl substitutions in carbon nanorings with desired optoelectronic properties.

Effect of atom substitutions on the magnetic properties in Ce 2 Fe 17 : Toward permanent magnet applications

Due to the rapidly developing technologies and huge market demand, there has been increasing interest internationally in exploring permanent magnet formulations in addition to the well-known Nd 2 Fe 14 B and SmCo 5 /Sm 2 Co 17 . Given Fe's low materials cost and generally high magnetization, Fe-rich rare earth binaries such as Ce 2 Fe 17 comprise a rich “hunting ground” for such new materials. While this compound suffers from a low ordering point and is a heli magnet, these difficulties are easily remedied by the substitution of appropriate amounts of cobalt for Fe, with room-temperature saturation magnetization as high as 1.5 T. In this work, we try to switch the all-important magnetic anisotropy from planar to uniaxial behavior in Ce 2 Fe 17 via 18 h - and 6 c -type atom substitutions with Si, Ir, and numerous other atoms. The uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy is successfully achieved in the 6 c -site-substituted Ce 2 Fe 15 Ir 2 systems, along with large magnetization. We find that iridium substitution, in particular, induces a substantial uniaxial anisotropy of 11.25 MJ/m 3 , which is comparable to most of the current rare earth permanent magnets. Although the iridium substitution is costly, the finding of Ir-triggered uniaxial magnetic anisotropy indicates the potential of Ce–Fe-based alloys for permanent magnets.

Tuning effect of vanadium substitution on the structural and electronic properties of potassium hollandite surfaces

Metal oxide surfaces possess unique properties that are crucial for a wide variety of applications. Herein, density functional theory calculations are performed to study surfaces of potassium hollandite, KMn 8 O 16 , a promising cathode material for electrochemical energy storage, and the vanadium-substituted analog KMn 7 VO 16 . The results show that there is a clear increase in the stability of KMn 8 O 16 with (001) < (110) < (100) or (010), apt to adopt an elongated rod-like morphology. The vanadium (V)-substitution lowers the crystal symmetry and prefers to occupy the surface sites, resulting in electron redistribution and selective tuning of surface energy depending on the surface structures. In particular, the higher stability of substituted V 4+ compared with Mn 4+ ions leads to stabilization of the (001) surface due to the direct interaction of reduced Mn δ+ ions on the surface, while such tuning effect decreases with the increase in surface stability, (110) > (100) and (010). As a result, the KMnO 16 rod is shortened upon V-substitution as observed experimentally, effectively facilitating the ion transport during discharge. The V substituents also introduce stabilization to the defect surfaces resulting from Mn 2+ dissolution during cycling, thereby hindering further structural decay. In conclusion, our study demonstrates the potential tuning effect of V-substitution to promote the ion transport and mitigate the capacity degradation of α-MnO 2 -based materials.

Inducing Fe moment in LaFeSi with p-block element substitution

We studied the LaFeSi phase using density functional theory based full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. Specifically we examined the effect of p-element substitution on the stability and magnetic properties focusing on pathways to induce Fe magnetic moments. We demonstrate that either partial or complete substitutions at the Si 2 c-site by several p-block elements lead to non-zero Fe moments. Our theoretical study shows that partially substituted LaFeSi 1-y Ga y and LaFeSi 1-y Al y are more thermodynamically stable than the fully substituted LaFeGa and LaFeAl. We also found that the P substitutions, either partial or complete, have the most negative formation energies, however the compounds containing phosphorus are non-magnetic. Our work highlights a pathway toward manipulations of the otherwise quenched Fe-moments in LaFeSi-related compounds and help in advancing the potential magnetic functionalities of LaFeX compounds.

Disorder-induced local strain distribution in Y-substituted TmVO 4

We report an investigation of the effect of substitution of Y for Tm in Tm 1-x ⁢Y x VO 4 via low-temperature heat capacity measurements, with the yttrium content x varying from 0 to 0.997. Because the Tm ions support a local quadrupolar (nematic) moment, they act as reporters of the local strain state in the material, with the splitting of the ion's non-Kramers crystal field ground state proportional to the quadrature sum of the in-plane tetragonal symmetry-breaking transverse and longitudinal strains experienced by each ion individually. Analysis of the heat capacity, therefore, provides detailed insights into the distribution of local strains that arise as a consequence of the chemical substitution. These local strains suppress long-range quadrupole order for x > 0.22, and result in a broad Schottky-like feature for higher concentrations. Heat capacity data are compared to expectations for a distribution of uncorrelated (random) strains. For dilute Tm concentrations, the heat capacity cannot be accounted for by randomly distributed strains, demonstrating the presence of significant strain correlations between sites. For intermediate Tm concentrations, these correlations must still exist, but the data cannot be distinguished from that which would be obtained from a two-dimensional Gaussian distribution. The crossover between these limits is discussed in terms of the interplay of key lengthscales in the substituted material. Furthermore, the central result of this work, namely that local strains arising from chemical substitution are not uncorrelated, has implications for the range of validity of theoretical models based on random effective fields that are used to describe such chemically substituted materials, particularly when electronic nematic correlations are present.

Electrotactile and vibrotactile displays for sensory substitution systems

Sensory substitution systems provide their users with environmental information through a human sensory channel (eye, ear, or skin) different from that normally used or with the information processed in some useful way. The authors review the methods used to present visual, auditory, and modified tactile information to the skin and discuss present and potential future applications of sensory substitution, including tactile vision substitution (TVS), tactile auditory substitution, and remote tactile sensing or feedback (teletouch). The relevant sensory physiology of the skin, including the mechanisms of normal touch and the mechanisms and sensations associated with electrical stimulation of the skin using surface electrodes (electrotactile, or electrocutaneous, stimulation), is reviewed. The information-processing ability of the tactile sense and its relevance to sensory substitution is briefly summarized. The limitations of current tactile display technologies are discussed.

Lower temperature curing thermoset polyimides utilizing a substituted norbornene endcap

Methoxycarbonyl bridgehead substituted nadic diacid monomethyl ester, when used as an endcapping monomer, lowered the cure temperature of thermoset PMR polyimides without seriously affecting other desirable properties, such as glass transition temperature and thermal oxidative stability. The C-13 CP/MAS NMR of model compounds was used to follow the cure of resin systems using both the unmodified nadic endcap and the methoxycarbonyl-substituted endcap. Rheological analysis and differential scanning calorimetry DSC also provided evidence for the lower curing nature of the substituted endcap. Two regioisomers of the bridgehead-substituted endcap were isolated, and their chemical structures were elucidated by X-ray crystallography. The model compound and molecular modeling studies conducted ruled out the possibility of regioisomeric imide formation in the substituted endcaps.

Effect of iron substitution in cryptomelane on the heterogeneous reaction with isoprene

Biogenic isoprene is an important pollutant for regional air quality. Being ubiquitously distributed on the earth surface, manganese (hydr)oxides should play a vital role in the transformation of isoprene. Cryptomelane is a typical manganese oxide with isomorphous substitution of Fe for Mn, but less attention has been paid to its heterogeneous reaction with isoprene. When Fe 3+ replaces Mn 3+ , K + is depleted and Mn 3+ is oxidized to Mn 4+ . In contrast, oxygen vacancies are formed when Fe 3+ substitutes Mn 4+ . Fe substitution creates weak crystallites and abundant mesopores, resulting in the increase of isoprene adsorption. As found by theoretical calculations, the Mn 4+ –O 2- bonds at the cross sections of the tunnels is more active than that on the outer wall of the tunnels. After the adsorption of isoprene, bridging carboxylate species and hydrogen-bonding water are produced and the surface octahedra are distorted, i.e., Mn 4+ O 6 → Mn 3+ O 6-δ . As the heat facilitates the breakage of Mn 4+ –O 2- , the increase of environmental temperature enhances the oxidation of isoprene. Here the above findings shed light on the effect of Fe substitution in cryptomelane to enhance the oxidation of isoprene, and illustrates that heterogeneous reaction with isoprene impairs the transformation of other environmental substances on cryptomelane.

Establishing substitution rules of functional groups for high-capacity organic anode materials in Na-ion batteries

Tailoring molecular structures of organic electrode materials (OEMs) can enhance their performance in Na-ion batteries, however, the substitution rules and the consequent effect on the specific capacity and working potential remain elusive. Herein, by examining three sodium carboxylates with selective N substitution or extended conjugation structure, we exploited the correlation between structure and performance to establish substitution rules for high-capacity OEMs. Our results show that substitution position and types of functional groups are essential to create active centers for uptake/removal of Na+ and thermodynamically stabilize organic structures. Furthermore, rational host design and electrolytes modulation were performed to extend the cycle life to 500 cycles. A full cell based on the optimal 2,2’-bipyridine-4,4’-dicarboxylic acid disodium salt anode and the polyaniline cathode is demonstrated to confirm the feasibility of achieving all-organic batteries. Lastly, this work provides a valuable guideline for the design principle of high-capacity and stable OEMs for sustainable energy storage.

Enhanced ionic conductivity and lack of paddle-wheel effect in pseudohalogen-substituted Li argyrodites

Superionic conductors are key to the development of safe and high-energy-density, all-solid-state batteries. Using a combined theoretical and experimental approach, we explore the feasibility of increasing the ionic conductivity through pseudohalogen substitution in the Li argyrodite structure. Under the guidance of calculated thermodynamic stability, BH 4 -substituted Li argyrodite, Li 5.91 PS 4.91 (BH 4 ) 1.09 , was successfully synthesized via a mechanochemical method. As-synthesized BH 4- substituted Li argyrodite displays an ionic conductivity of 4.8 mS/cm at 25°C. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulation trajectory analysis was used to investigate how BH 4 facilitates Li-ion diffusion and indicates only a weak correlation with the B–H bond motion. Here, we find that the enhanced conductivity mainly originates from the weak interaction between Li and BH 4 and find no evidence of a paddle-wheel effect from the polyanion. This work provides insight into how cluster ions enhance Li diffusion and systematically describes how to explore superionic conductors with pseudohalogen substitution.

Role of Elemental Substitution on Hydrogen Incorporation in Characteristic Ti/Fe-Based Oxides

Elemental substitution is well-known to benefit hydrogen storage in the intermetallic compound TiFe; however, the impact of these substituents on the native and passivating surface oxide has not been well-established. Here, we perform density functional theory calculations on several characteristic oxides that are likely to form on exposed TiFe surfaces, specifically, TiO 2 , FeO, TiFeO 3 , and Ti 4 Fe 2 O. In TiO 2 and TiFeO 3 , additional acceptor species substituting for Ti can increase the solubility of protonic hydrogen (H i + ), likely enhancing hydrogen permeation of the oxide layer. In FeO, few dopants will act as acceptors, and hydrogen will incorporate as substitutional H O + , which is likely to be less mobile and will hinder hydrogen permeation. Finally, we find that Ti 4 Fe 2 O, which is thermodynamically metastable, may be stabilized by defects under O-poor conditions, although the presence of certain substitutional elements can destabilize it. In general, Mn, V, and Cr are among the best substituents for enhancing hydrogenation through the oxide layer. In conclusion, our results help to explain what features make additional elements particularly effective for enabling reversible hydrogen storage in TiFe, and they can guide further technological development of high-performing TiFe-based alloys for future energy applications.

Multifunctional Effect of Fe Substitution in Na Layered Cathode Materials for Enhanced Storage Stability

In this study, developing stable cathode materials that are resistant to storage degradation is essential for practical development and industrial processing of Na-ion batteries, as many sodium layered oxide materials are susceptible to hygroscopicity and instability when exposed to ambient air. Among the various layered compounds, Fe-substituted O 3 -type Na(Ni 1/2 Mn 1/2 ) 1-x Fe x O 2 materials have emerged as a promising option for high-performance and low-cost cathodes. While previous reports have noted the decent air-storage stability of these materials, the role and origin of Fe substitution in improving storage stability remain unclear. In this study, we investigate the air resistant effect of Fe substitution in O 3 -Na(Ni 1/2 Mn 1/2 ) 1-x Fe x O 2 cathode materials by performing systematic surface and structural characterizations. We find that the improved storage stability can be attributed to the multifunctional effect of Fe substitution, which forms a surface protective layer containing an Fe-incorporated spinel phase and decreases the thermodynamical driving force for bulk chemical sodium extraction. With these mechanisms, the Fe-containing cathodes can suppress the cascades of cathode degradation processes and better retain the electrochemical performance after air storage.

Heterovalent Substitution of K 2 SrP 2 O 7 :Cr 3+ to Achieve Anti-Thermal-Quenching Broadband Near-Infrared Luminescence

Broadband near-infrared (NIR) light sources based on phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes are highly desirable for biochemical analysis and medical diagnosis applications. However, thermal quenching remains a demanding challenge for developing efficient NIR phosphors. Herein, we report the enhancement of both quantum efficiency and thermal stability in Cr 3+ -activated K 2 SrP 2 O 7 phosphors through a heterovalent substitution strategy by replacing Sr 2+ with Al 3+ in K 2 Sr 1–x Al x P 2 O 7 (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) to obtain optimized broadband NIR emission. Structural modulation via Al 3+ substitution leads to the optimized composition, K 2 Sr 0.88 Al 0.1 P 2 O 7 :0.02Cr 3+ , which emits across a broad NIR range of 650–1100 nm peaking at 807 nm with a full width at half-maximum of ∼130 nm under 448 nm excitation. Remarkably, its emission intensity at 150 °C remains 120% of the initial value at room temperature, demonstrating a rare antithermal-quenching behavior. Temperature-dependent XRD studies further reveal that Al 3+ substitution effectively suppresses lattice expansion at elevated temperatures, indicating enhanced lattice stability under thermal excitation. Detailed structural and spectral analyses show that the substitution enhances local site symmetry, reduces electron–phonon coupling, increases thermally induced absorption probability, and fortifies energetic barriers against nonradiative transitions. These synergistic effects collectively endow this NIR phosphor with a superior thermal stability. Furthermore, NIR light-emitting diodes fabricated with this phosphor exhibit strong potential for applications in information identification, nondestructive detection, and night vision technologies. This study demonstrates a local structure engineering strategy for designing thermally robust Cr 3+ -activated NIR phosphors, offering valuable insights into material discovery and NIR spectroscopy device development.

Substitution Reactions in the Pyrolysis of Acetone Revealed through a Modeling, Experiment, Theory Paradigm

The development of high-fidelity mechanisms for chemically reactive systems is a challenging process that requires the compilation of rate descriptions for a large and somewhat ill-defined set of reactions. The present unified combination of modeling, experiment, and theory provides a paradigm for improving such mechanism development efforts. Here we combine broadband rotational spectroscopy with detailed chemical modeling based on rate constants obtained from automated ab initio transition state theory-based master equation calculations and high-level thermochemical parametrizations. Broadband rotational spectroscopy offers quantitative and isomer-specific detection by which branching ratios of polar reaction products may be obtained. Using this technique, we observe and characterize products arising from H atom substitution reactions in the flash pyrolysis of acetone (CH 3 C(O)CH 3 ) at a nominal temperature of 1800 K. The major product observed is ketene (CH 2 CO). Minor products identified include acetaldehyde (CH 3 CHO), propyne (CH 3 CCH), propene (CH 2 CHCH 3 ), and water (HDO). Literature mechanisms for the pyrolysis of acetone do not adequately describe the minor products. The inclusion of a variety of substitution reactions, with rate constants and thermochemistry obtained from automated ab initio kinetics predictions and Active Thermochemical Tables analyses, demonstrates an important role for such processes. Furthermore, the pathway to acetaldehyde is shown to be a direct result of substitution of acetone's methyl group by a free H atom, while propene formation arises from OH substitution in the enol form of acetone by a free H atom.

Impact of Baloxavir Resistance-Associated Substitutions on Influenza Virus Growth and Drug Susceptibility

Baloxavir marboxil (baloxavir) is a recently FDA-approved influenza virus polymerase acidic (PA) endonuclease inhibitor. Several PA substitutions have been demonstrated to confer reduced susceptibility to baloxavir; however, their impacts on measurements of antiviral drug susceptibility and replication capacity when present as a fraction of the viral population have not been established. We generated recombinant A/California/04/09 (H1N1)-like viruses (IAV) with PA I38L, I38T, or E199D substitutions and B/Victoria/504/2000-like virus (IBV) with PA I38T. These substitutions reduced baloxavir susceptibility by 15.3-, 72.3-, 5.4-, and 54.5-fold, respectively, when tested in normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells. We then assessed the replication kinetics, polymerase activity, and baloxavir susceptibility of the wild-type:mutant (WT:MUT) virus mixtures in NHBE cells. The percentage of MUT relative to WT virus necessary to detect reduced baloxavir susceptibility in phenotypic assays ranged from 10% (IBV I38T) to 92% (IAV E199D). While I38T did not alter IAV replication kinetics or polymerase activity, IAV PA I38L and E199D MUTs and the IBV PA I38T MUT exhibited reduced replication levels and significantly altered polymerase activity. Differences in replication were detectable when the MUTs comprised ≥90%, ≥90%, or ≥75% of the population, respectively. Here, droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) analyses showed that WT viruses generally outcompeted the respective MUTs after multiple replication cycles and serial passaging in NHBE cells when initial mixtures contained ≥50% of the WT viruses; however, we also identified potential compensatory substitutions (IAV PA D394N and IBV PA E329G) that emerged and appeared to improve the replication capacity of baloxavir-resistant virus in cell culture.

Electronic Tuning in URu2Si2 Through Ru to Pt Chemical Substitution

Studies that control the unit cell volume and electronic composition have been useful in revealing what factors lead to hidden order and superconductivity in the strongly correlated electron system URu 2 Si 2 . For example, isoelectronic tuning that increases the hybridization between the f and conduction electron states (i.e., applied pressure and Ru → Fe/Os chemical substitution) 1) converts hidden order into antiferromagnetism and 2) destroys the superconductivity. The impact of nonisoelectronic chemical substitution has been less clear, but several unifying trends have recently emerged for chemical substitution vectors that qualitatively add electrons (e.g., Ru → Rh/Ir and Si → P). This includes 1) the rapid destruction of hidden order and superconductivity, 2) composition regions where the underlying Kondo lattice is preserved but does not harbor an ordered state, and 3) the emergence of complex magnetism at large substitutions. In order to assess the limits of this perspective, we have investigated the series U(Ru 1− x Pt x ) 2 Si 2 for x ≲ 0.19, where the Ru and Pt d -shells differ substantially from each other. Magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements unexpectedly reveal a phase diagram with notable similarities to those of other electron doping series. This result reinforces the viewpoint that there is a quasi-universal affect that results from electron doping in this material, and we anticipate that an understanding of these trends will be useful to isolate what factors are foundational for hidden order and superconductivity.

Trap‐Engineering the Persistent Luminescence of Ca 3 Ga 4 O 9 :Tb 3+ via Al 3+ Substitution for Optical Data Storage

Abstract Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) materials hold great potential for optical data storage (ODS) and anticounterfeiting applications. Nevertheless, the scarcity of suitable luminescent materials with deep‐level traps remains a significant obstacle. Herein, a host substation strategy have been employed to tune the persistent luminescence (PersL) and OSL properties of Ca 3 Ga 4 O 9 :Tb 3+ by Al 3+ substitution through trap engineering and demonstrated their potential. Specifically, the photoluminescence of the Ca 2.985 (Ga 1‐y% Al y% ) 4 O 9 :0.5%Tb 3+ of Tb 3+ is first investigated due to its different occupancies of Ca 2+ . The influence of host substitution on the crystal structure, trap depth, trap density, PersL, and OSL properties have further investigated. A series of strong PersL and OSL peaks from the Ca 2.985 (Ga 1‐y% Al y% ) 4 O 9 :0.5%Tb 3+ with bluish‐green emissions have been observed. The Ca 2.985 (Ga 1‐y% Al y% ) 4 O 9 :0.5%Tb 3+ have shown controllable photon release upon thermal and optical stimuli, enhancing their performance for ODS. Thermally stimulated luminescence suggests that vacancy and defect concentrations inside the Ca 3‐x% (Ga 1‐y% Al y% ) 4 O 9 :x%Tb 3+ can be manipulated by Tb 3+ doping and Al 3+ substitution, which ultimately leads to the formation of deep traps and a broad distribution of traps with increased deep trap concentration. The work demonstrates that trap engineering through Al 3 ⁺ substitution is an effective method for tuning PersL and OSL properties of Ca 2.985 (Ga 1‐y% Al y% ) 4 O 9 :0.5%Tb 3+ for ODS.
