Reversible parts-per-trillion-level detection of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid in tap water using field-effect transistor sensors

Widespread, persistent and toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pose a major threat to water systems and human health. Current detection methods are relatively expensive, slow and complex, underscoring the need for more accessible alternatives to meet increasingly stringent PFAS regulations. Here, in this study, we present an ultrasensitive sensing platform for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid detection in tap water with a reporting limit ( ~ 250 parts per quadrillion) lower than the US Environmental Protection Agency’s regulatory standard (4 parts per trillion), using a remote gate field-effect transistor featuring β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-modified reduced graphene oxide as the sensing membrane. The sensor exhibits excellent selectivity against common inorganic ions, natural organic matter and select organic pollutants in tap water. The reversible and rapid response ( < 2 min) indicates the potential of remote gate field-effect transistor for continuous in-line monitoring. Mechanistic studies using quartz crystal microbalance and molecular dynamics simulations reveal key roles of analyte adsorption and charge properties in sensing performance and offer insights for designing more selective PFAS capture probes.

Depolymerization of lignin for biological conversion through sulfonation and a chelator-mediated Fenton reaction

The generating value from lignin through depolymerization and biological conversion to valuable fuels, chemicals, or intermediates has great promise but is limited by several factors including lack of cost-effective depolymerization methods, toxicity within the breakdown products, and low bioconversion of the breakdown products. High yield depolymerization of natural lignins requires cleaving carbon-carbon bonds in addition to ether bonds. To address that need, we report that a chelator-mediated Fenton reaction can efficiently cleave C-C bonds in sulfonated polymers at or near room temperature, and that unwanted repolymerization can be minimized through optimizing reaction conditions. This method was used to depolymerize lignosulfonate from M w = 28,000 g/mol to M w = 800 g/mol. The breakdown products were characterized by SEC, FTIR and NMR and evaluated for bioavailability. The breakdown products are rich in acid, aldehyde, and alcohol functionalities but are largely devoid of aromatics and aliphatic dienes. A panel of nine organisms were tested for the ability to grow on the breakdown products. Growth at a low level was observed for several monocultures on the depolymerized LS in absence of glucose. Much stronger growth was observed in the presence of 0.2% glucose and for one organism we demonstrate doubling of melanin production in the presence of depolymerized LS. The results suggest that this chelator-mediated Fenton method is a promising new approach for biological conversion of lignin into higher value chemicals or intermediates.

Anion chemical composition of poly(ethylene oxide)-based sulfonylimide and sulfonate lithium ionomers controls ion aggregation and conduction

Maximizing ion conduction in single-ion-conducting ionomers is essential for their application in energy-related technologies such as Li-ion batteries. Understanding the anion chemical composition impacts on ion conduction offers new perspectives to maximize ion transport, since the current approach of lowering T g has apparently reached a limit (lowest T g ~ 190 K, highest conductivity ~10 -5 –10 -4 S cm -1 ). Here, a series of random ionomers are synthesized by copolymerizing poly(ethylene glycol)methacrylate with either sulfonylimide lithium methacrylate (MTLi) or sulfonate lithium methacrylate (MSLi) using reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Li-Ion conduction and self-diffusion coefficients (DLi+) of the ionomers are characterized with dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) and pulsed-field-gradient (PFG) NMR diffusometry, respectively. Increasing ion content decreases the Li-ion conductivity and D Li+ , as expected from the increased T g . Moreover, a considerably lower ionic conductivity and D Li+ are observed for MSLi compared to MTLi at constant ion content and T g /T. As revealed from X-ray scattering, strong ion aggregation in MSLi results in much lower conductivity and DLi+ compared with less aggregated MTLi based on the more delocalized sulfonylimide anion. These results emphasize the detrimental and molecularly specific role of ion aggregation in Li-ion conductivity, and highlight the necessity for minimizing ion aggregation via the rational choice of anion chemical composition.

Explicit solvent machine-learned coarse-grained model of sodium polystyrene sulfonate to capture polymer structure and dynamics

In this article, strongly charged polyelectrolytes (PEs) demonstrate complex solution behavior as a function of chain length, concentrations, and ionic strength. The viscosity behavior is important to understand and is a core quantity for many applications, but aspects remain a challenge. Molecular dynamics simulations using implicit solvent coarse-grained (CG) models successfully reproduce structure, but are often inappropriate for calculating viscosities. To address the need for CG models which reproduce viscoelastic properties of one of the most studied PEs, sodium polystyrene sulfonate (NaPSS), we report our recent efforts in using Bayesian optimization to develop CG models of NaPSS which capture both polymer structure and dynamics in aqueous solutions with explicit solvent. We demonstrate that our explicit solvent CG NaPSS model with the ML-BOP water model [Chan et al. Nat Commun 10, 379 (2019)] quantitatively reproduces NaPSS chain statistics and solution structure. The new explicit solvent CG model is benchmarked against diffusivities from atomistic simulations and experimental specific viscosities for short chains. We also show that our Bayesian-optimized CG model is transferable to larger chain lengths across a range of concentrations. Overall, this work provides a machine-learned model to probe the structural, dynamic, and rheological properties of polyelectrolytes such as NaPSS and aids in the design of novel, strongly charged polymers with tunable structural and viscoelastic properties

Statistical Design of Experiments Enables Rapid Exploration of Perfluorobutane Sulfonate Degradation

The phase-out of long-chain PFAS has led to the proliferation of highly recalcitrant short-chain analogs, and mineralization technologies for these short-chain PFAS are needed to mitigate their deleterious effects on environmental and human health. In this study, we utilize a statistical design of experiments, specifically, response surface methodology, to rapidly evaluate the electrochemical degradation of the short-chain PFAS, perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS). We evaluate the impacts of the three primary electrochemical parameters (concentration of PFBS, concentration of supporting electrolyte, and applied current) over multiple orders of magnitude on the three primary reaction outcomes of electrochemical PFBS degradation (incomplete PFBS decomposition, complete PFBS mineralization as fluorine, and anodic energy consumption). Our results correspond with literature and clearly identify the well-known tradeoff between energy consumption and complete mineralization. Intriguingly, partial PFBS decomposition and energy consumption demonstrate nonlinear dependencies in the current/supporting electrolyte concentration space and the current/PFBS concentration space, respectively. These findings highlight the utility of the response surface methodology model to efficiently interrogate a large parameter space, identifying both common results and less-obvious interactions between electrochemical parameters and their influences on reaction outcomes.

Development of Engineered Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) materials for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) Remediation

In this project, an engineered form of a Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) based material is developed for the removal of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) for real-world applications. The powdered MOF material has been demonstrated at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to selectively capture PFOS from distilled (DI) water with a large performance advantage over granulated activated carbon (GAC). In this project, the powdered material was transformed into an engineered form (using a polymer) to demonstrate PFOS adsorption capacity in tap water. PNNL developed and processed the MOF material in the engineering form (granules). After thorough characterization and stability testing, these engineered MOF granules were provided to an industrial collaborator, AVANTech, LLC, for testing and demonstration of continuous, long-term PFOS removal from tap water. The preliminary results showed PFOS sorption capacities at parts per billion (ppb) concentrations in tap water under a flow system. Also provided insight into sorbent-based material utilization in a continuous flow system. Further studies are required to optimize and understand sorption in such industrial-scale applications.

Ferrocene Bis(Sulfonate) Salt as Redoxmer for Fast and Steady Redox Flow Desalination

Desalination is considered a promising solution to alleviate water shortages, yet current methods are often restricted, due to challenges like high energy consumption, significant cost, or limited desalination capacity. In this study, we present a novel approach of redox flow desalination (RFD) utilizing the highly aqueous-soluble and reversible redox-active compound, potassium 1,1'-bis(sulfonate) ferrocene (1,1'-FcDS). This water-soluble organic compound yielded stable and rapid desalination, sustaining extended operation without notable decay and achieving an impressive desalination rate of up to 457.5 mmol·h -1 ·m -2 and energy consumption as low as 40.2 kJ·mol NaCl -1 . Specifically, the RFD device effectively desalinated a 50 mM NaCl solution to potable standards within 6000 s using 1,1'-FcDS. It maintained an average energy consumption of 178.16 kJ·mol NaCl -1 and exhibited negligible deterioration in desalination rate, energy efficiency, and charge efficiency throughout a rigorous 12,000 s cycling test. Furthermore, the versatility of this method was demonstrated by effectively treating saline water with varying initial concentrations from 10 mM to 50 mM, showcasing its potential across a broad spectrum of applications.

Molecular deformation and stress-strain behavior of poly(bisphenol-A-diphenyl sulfone)

The strain-birefringence response of poly(bisphenol-A-diphenyl sulfone) is found to be independent of temperature at temperatures below -100 C; at higher temperatures, the response becomes slightly dependent on temperature, with lower birefringence seen at higher temperatures. The stress-strain behavior and the stress-birefringence response both depend on temperature over the entire testing temperature range (-179 C to 150 C) studied; this dependence, however, is not pronounced. The evidence is seen as suggesting that the polymer molecules respond to deformation by undergoing conformational rearrangements; the mode of the molecular deformation remains unchanged for temperatures of -100 C or lower. At higher temperatures, the average length of the chain segments involved in the rearrangement increases. The stress-strain response is attributed mainly to chain orientation. The entropic contribution deriving from chain orientation at temperatures below -100 C is still substantial. The modest temperature dependence of the stress-strain response suggests that the energy barriers for the chain segments involved in the rearrangement are relatively low.

Morphology and properties of amine terminated poly(arylene ether ketone) and poly(arylene ether sulfone) modified epoxy resin systems

Epoxy resin networks cured with DDS were modified by incorporating tough ductile thermoplastics such as the amine terminated polyether sulfones and amine terminated polyether ketones. Both linear copolymers were able to significantly improve the fracture toughness values at the 15 and 30 weight percent concentrations examined. These improvements in fracture toughness were achieved without any significant change in the flexural modulus.

Synthesis of diamino terminated poly(arylene ether sulfone) oligomers as reactive intermediates in copolymer systems

Reactive diamino terminated oligomers of pre-determined molecular weights can be prepared by either of two synthetic routes depending upon the compound used to introduce the amine functionality. After characterization by spectroscopic and thermal methods, these oligomers can be used in several post-reactions to yield novel block and segmented copolymer systems. A potential application for these poly(arylene ether sulfone) oligomers exists in the curing or co-curing of epoxy resins for improving toughness. They can also be used to prepare toughened bismaleimide systems as well as producing copolymers with improved solvent resistance, especially with respect to chlorinated solvents.

Fabrication and characterization of amine terminated poly(arylene ether sulfone) modified epoxy-carbon fiber composites

Multifunctional epoxy resin networks were chemically modified with thermoplastic amine terminated poly(arylene ether sulfones) of controlled molecular weights. This system was then examined as both neat resin and as a matrix resin for carbon fiber composites. The neat resin displayed a significant increase in both fracture toughness and energy release rate values. This was attributed to the altered morphology, which could be varied from particles of polysulfone in an epoxy matrix to that of a quasi-continuous polysulfone phase.

Radiation-resistant, amorphous, all-aromatic poly(arylene ether sulfones) - Synthesis, physical behavior, and degradation characteristics

The effects of Co-60 gamma radiation on a series of poly(arylene ether sulfones) prepared by nucleophilic activated aromatic substitution are investigated experimentally. The preparation of the test compounds is described, and the test results are presented in extensive tables and graphs. Radiation-induced degradation, as measured by SO2 production, was found to be lowest in compounds based on biphenol rather than bisphenol A; these findings were also well correlated with ultimate-tensile-strain measurements.
