Chiral spin-liquid-like state in pyrochlore iridate thin films

The pyrochlore iridates have become ideal platforms to unravel fascinating correlated and topological phenomena that stem from the intricate interplay among strong spin-orbit coupling, electronic correlations, lattice with geometric frustration, and itinerancy of the 5d electrons. The all-in-all-out antiferromagnetic state, commonly considered as the magnetic ground state, can be dramatically altered in reduced dimensionality, leading to exotic or hidden quantum states inaccessible in bulk. Here, by means of magnetotransport, resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, we discover an emergent quantum disordered state in (111) Y 2 Ir 2 O 7 thin films (thickness ≤30 nm) persisting down to 5 K, characterized by dispersionless magnetic excitations. The anomalous Hall effect observed below an onset temperature near 125 K corroborates the presence of chiral short-range spin configurations expressed in non-zero scalar spin chirality, breaking the macroscopic time-reversal symmetry. The origin of this chiral state is ascribed to the restoration of magnetic frustration on the pyrochlore lattice in lower dimensionality, where the competing exchange interactions together with enhanced quantum fluctuations suppress any long-range order and trigger spin-liquid-like behavior with degenerate ground-state manifold.

Ion-beam assisted sputtering of titanium nitride thin films

Abstract Titanium nitride is a material of interest for many superconducting devices such as nanowire microwave resonators and photon detectors. Thus, controlling the growth of TiN thin films with desirable properties is of high importance. This work aims to explore effects in ion beam-assisted sputtering (IBAS), were an observed increase in nominal critical temperature and upper critical fields are in tandem with previous work on Niobium nitride (NbN). We grow thin films of titanium nitride by both, the conventional method of DC reactive magnetron sputtering and the IBAS method, to compare their superconducting critical temperatures $$T_{c}$$ T c as functions of thickness, sheet resistance, and nitrogen flow rate. We perform electrical and structural characterizations by electric transport and x-ray diffraction measurements. Compared to the conventional method of reactive sputtering, the IBAS technique has demonstrated a 10% increase in nominal critical temperature without noticeable variation in the lattice structure. Additionally, we explore the behavior of superconducting $$T_c$$ T c in ultra-thin films. Trends in films grown at high nitrogen concentrations follow predictions of mean-field theory in disordered films and show suppression of superconducting $$T_c$$ T c due to geometric effects, while nitride films grown at low nitrogen concentrations strongly deviate from the theoretical models.

Signatures of polarized chiral spin disproportionation in rare earth nickelates

In rare earth nickelates (RENiO 3 ), electron-lattice coupling drives a concurrent metal-to-insulator and bond disproportionation phase transition whose microscopic origin has long been the subject of active debate. Of several proposed mechanisms, here we test the hypothesis that pairs of self-doped ligand holes spatially condense to provide local spin moments that are antiferromagnetically coupled to Ni spins. These singlet-like states provide a basis for long-range bond and spiral spin order. Using magnetic resonant X-ray scattering on NdNiO 3 thin films, we observe the chiral nature of the spin disproportionated state, with spin spirals propagating along the crystallographic (101) ortho direction. These spin spirals are found to preferentially couple to X-ray helicity, establishing the presence of a hitherto-unobserved macroscopic chirality. The presence of this chiral magnetic configuration suggests a potential multiferroic coupling between the noncollinear magnetic arrangement and improper ferroelectric behavior as observed in prior studies on NdNiO 3 (101) ortho films and RENiO 3 single crystals. Experimentally constrained theoretical double-cluster calculations confirm the presence of an energetically stable spin-disproportionated state with Zhang-Rice singlet-like combinations of Ni and ligand moments

Orbital inversion and emergent lattice dynamics in infinite layer CaCoO 2

The layered cobaltate CaCoO 2 exhibits a unique herringbone-like structure. Serving as a potential prototype for a new class of complex lattice patterns, we study the properties of CaCoO 2 using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). Our results reveal a significant inter-plane hybridization between the Ca 4s- and Co 3d- orbitals, leading to an inversion of the textbook orbital occupation of a square planar geometry. Further, our RIXS data reveal a strong low energy mode, with anomalous intensity modulations as a function of momentum transfer close to a quasi-static response. These findings indicate that the newly discovered herringbone structure exhibited in CaCoO 2 may serve as a promising laboratory for the design of materials having strong electronic, orbital and lattice correlations.
