Air-stable ternary organic solar cells achieved by using fullerene additives in non-fullerene acceptor-polymer donor blends

Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on donor–acceptor blends have shown a rapid improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) now approaching, for small cells, those of the state-of-the art commercial solar modules. However, performance degradation remains one of the most critical impediments for OSC technology commercialization. Ternary solar cells where a third component, for instance an acceptor, is added to a non-fullerene acceptor–polymer donor blend are an effective approach for improving both OSC efficiency and long-term stability. Here, in this work, we study the role of two fullerene acceptors, ET18 and PCBM, as the third component in P D :Y6 blends. These fullerene derivatives significantly enhance the cell stability, which retained >90% of their initial PCEs (13–14%) even after storage in air for 6 months, compared to only ~20% retention for the binary devices. GIWAXS, AFM, in situ impedance spectroscopy and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements reveal that the enhanced stability of the ternary devices results from a more robust blend morphology reducing charge recombination in the ternary devices during aging.

Effect of poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] side chain length on the brush swelling behavior in A/B/A–B ternary blends with polystyrene

The phase behavior of ternary blends composed of two homopolymers (A, B) and their corresponding diblock copolymer (A–B) has been widely studied, with emphasis on the volumetrically symmetric isopleth and the formation of bicontinuous microemulsions. However, almost all the previous studies employed linear polymers, and little is known about the impact of polymer architecture on the phase behavior of such ternary blends. Here, in this work, we report the self-assembly of three sets of ternary blends of polystyrene (PS) and poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (POEGMA n ), with different lengths of oligo(ethylene glycol) side chains n. Small-angle X-ray scattering was used to probe the phase behavior at different compositions and temperatures. The order-to-disorder transition temperature was found to be impacted by the side chain length. It was also observed that longer side chains lead to poorer miscibility of homopolymers in the corresponding block, resulting in a more “dry-brush” like swelling behavior.

Structural and photoelectrochemical properties in the thin film system Cu–Fe–V–O and its ternary subsystems Fe–V–O and Cu–V–O

Thin-film material libraries in the ternary and quaternary metal oxide systems Fe–V–O, Cu–V–O, and Cu–Fe–V–O were synthesized using combinatorial reactive co-sputtering with subsequent annealing in air. Their compositional, structural, and functional properties were assessed using high-throughput characterization methods. Prior to the investigation of the quaternary system Cu–Fe–V–O, the compositions (Fe 61 V 39 )O x and (Cu 52 V 48 )O x with promising photoactivity were identified from their ternary subsystems Fe–V–O and Cu–V–O, respectively. Two Cu–Fe–V–O material libraries with (Cu 29-72 Fe 4-27 V 22-57 )O x and (Cu 11-55 Fe 27-73 V 12-34 )O x composition spread were investigated. Seven mixed ternary and quaternary phase regions were identified: I (α-Cu 3 FeV 6 O 26 /FeVO 4 ), II (Cu 5 V 2 O 10 /FeVO 4 /α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 ), III (Cu 5 V 2 O 10 ), IV (Cu 5 V 2 O 10 /FeVO 4 , V (FeVO 4 /γ-Cu 2 V 2 O 7 /α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 ), VI (β-Cu 2 V 2 O 7 /α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 /FeVO 4 ), and VII (β-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 /FeVO 4 ). Furthermore, in the investigated composition range, two photoactive regions, (Cu 53 Fe 7 V 40 )O x and (Cu 45 Fe 21 V 34 )O x , were identified, exhibiting 103 μ A/cm 2 and 108 μ A/cm 2 photocurrent density for the oxygen evolution reaction at 1.63 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, respectively. The highest photoactive region (Cu 45 Fe 21 V 34 )O x comprises the dominant α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 24 phase and minor FeVO 4 phase. This photoactive region corresponds to having an indirect bandgap of 1.87 eV and a direct bandgap of 2.58 eV with an incident photon-to-current efficiency of 30% at a wavelength of 310 nm.

Multi-fidelity machine-learning with uncertainty quantification and Bayesian optimization for materials design: Application to ternary random alloys

We present a scale-bridging approach based on a multi-fidelity (MF) machine-learning (ML) framework leveraging Gaussian processes (GP) to fuse atomistic computational model predictions across multiple levels of fidelity. Through the posterior variance of the MFGP, our framework naturally enables uncertainty quantification, providing estimates of confidence in the predictions. We used density functional theory as high-fidelity prediction, while a ML interatomic potential is used as low-fidelity prediction. Practical materials’ design efficiency is demonstrated by reproducing the ternary composition dependence of a quantity of interest (bulk modulus) across the full aluminum–niobium–titanium ternary random alloy composition space. The MFGP is then coupled to a Bayesian optimization procedure, and the computational efficiency of this approach is demonstrated by performing an on-the-fly search for the global optimum of bulk modulus in the ternary composition space. The framework presented in this manuscript is the first application of MFGP to atomistic materials simulations fusing predictions between density functional theory and classical interatomic potential calculations.

Interactions between nonfullerene acceptors lead to unstable ternary organic photovoltaic cells

For organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices to achieve consistent performance and long operational lifetimes, organic semiconductors must be processed with precise control over their purity, composition, and structure. This is particularly important for high volume solar cell manufacturing where control of materials quality has a direct impact on yield and cost. Ternary-blend OPVs containing two acceptor–donor–acceptor (A–D–A)-type nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) and a donor have proven to be an effective strategy to improve solar spectral coverage and reduce energy losses beyond that of binary-blend OPVs. Here, we show that the purity of such a ternary is compromised during blending to form a homogeneously mixed bulk heterojunction thin film. We find that the impurities originate from end-capping C=C/C=C exchange reactions of A–D–A-type NFAs, and that their presence influences both device reproducibility and long-term reliability. The end-capping exchange results in generation of up to four impurity constituents with strong dipolar character that interfere with the photoinduced charge transfer process, leading to reduced charge generation efficiency, morphological instabilities, and an increased vulnerability to photodegradation. As a consequence, the OPV efficiency falls to less than 65% of its initial value within 265 h when exposed to up to 10 suns intensity illumination. We propose potential molecular design strategies critical to enhancing the reproducibility as well as reliability of ternary OPVs by avoiding end-capping reactions.

Searching for ternary magnetic Zr–Fe–B compounds through deep machine learning

We use deep machine learning (ML) combined with first-principles calculations to search for energetically favorable ternary magnetic zirconium–iron borides. We show that an iterative ML approach enables efficient screening of vast structural libraries, effectively selecting promising candidates for subsequent first-principles investigations. Twenty-two new Fe-rich ternary compounds with formation energies within 60 meV atom −1 above the known ternary convex hull and with magnetic polarization larger than 0.6 T are identified, among which ten structures exhibit significant uniaxial anisotropy with magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K 1 ⩾ 0.8 MJ m −3 , including a Zr 2 Fe 14 B phase. Such an ML-guided approach dramatically accelerates the discovery of rare-earth-free permanent magnetic materials.

Evolution of the superconducting properties from binary to ternary APC-Nb 3 Sn wires

We present a study conducted on binary Tube Type and ternary powder-in-tube Nb 3 Sn wires manufactured using the artificial pinning centres-internal oxidation method. All the specimens are doped with Zr: oxide nano-particles of this element are responsible for the pinning improvement, both by refining the A-15 grain-size and their own point-pinning contribution. Low-field J c magnetometry confirms that the hadron-hadron Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh) specifications are met by one ternary doped-sample. The differences in microstructure were assessed by scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy to clarify the reasons for the pinning improvement between the two generations. The deviations from the Dew Hughes model are also discussed, underlying some non-linear addition due to competition between the two pinning mechanisms. Finally, we show how the introduction of Ta as a ternary addition influences the A-15 phase by focusing on the radial inhomogeneities, evaluating the T c distribution and Sn composition gradients. The latter are used to model the currents, enabling us to evaluate the individual weights of the pinning mechanisms and their absolute contributions at the High Luminosity-Large Hadron Collider and FCC-hh dipoles operational points.

Compressing deep neural networks on FPGAs to binary and ternary precision with hls4ml

We present the implementation of binary and ternary neural networks in the hls4ml library, designed to automatically convert deep neural network models to digital circuits with FPGA firmware. Starting from benchmark models trained with floating point precision, we investigate different strategies to reduce the network's resource consumption by reducing the numerical precision of the network parameters to binary or ternary. We discuss the trade-off between model accuracy and resource consumption. In addition, we show how to balance between latency and accuracy by retaining full precision on a selected subset of network components. As an example, we consider two multiclass classification tasks: handwritten digit recognition with the MNIST data set and jet identification with simulated proton-proton collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The binary and ternary implementation has similar performance to the higher precision implementation while using drastically fewer FPGA resources.

H2SO4-HNO3-H2O ternary system in the stratosphere

Estimation of the equilibrium vapor pressure over the ternary system H2SO4-HNO3-H2O to study the possibility of stratospheric aerosol formation involving HNO3. It is shown that the vapor pressures for the ternary system H2SO4-HNO3-H2O with weight composition around 70-80% H2SO4, 10-20% HNO3, 10-20% H2O at -50 C are below the order of 10 to the minus 8th mm Hg. It is concluded that there exists more than sufficient nitric acid and water vapor in the stratosphere to participate in ternary system aerosol formation at -50 C. Therefore, HNO3 should be present in stratospheric aerosols, provided that H2SO4 is also present.

Role of electron concentration in softening and hardening of ternary molybdenum alloys

Effects of various combinations of hafnium, tantalum, rhenium, osmium, iridium, and platinum in ternary molybdenum alloys on alloy softening and hardening were determined. Hardness tests were conducted at four test temperatures over the temperature range 77 to 411 K. Results showed that hardness data for ternary molybdenum alloys could be correlated with anticipated results from binary data based upon expressions involving the number of s and d electrons contributed by the solute elements. The correlation indicated that electron concentration plays a dominant role in controlling the hardness of ternary molybdenum alloys.

The role of electron concentration in softening and hardening of ternary molybdenum alloys

An investigation was conducted to determine softening and hardening behavior in ternary Mo alloys and to correlate these effects with electron concentration. Results showed that the hardness behavior of ternary Mo alloys could be correlated with results anticipated from binary data based upon expressions involving the number of s + d electrons contributed by the solute elements. It was further shown that combining alloying elements at concentrations that produce the maximum amount of softening in Mo does not result in additive softening in ternary Mo alloys. Once a critical electron concentration is exceeded, only alloy hardening is observed. A comparison of hardness behavior with literature data on Hall coefficient and magnetic susceptibility for W-Re alloys showed that hardness minima occur at Re concentrations where minima are observed for the physical property measurements. These observations, and the correlation of hardness with electron concentration, support the hypothesis that alloy softening in Group VI metals is an intrinsic characteristic of these metals and that electron concentration plays the dominant role in controlling hardness.

Global petrologic variations on the moon - A ternary-diagram approach

An improved method for global petrologic mapping of the moon is presented, which uses a color-coded ternary diagram whose apexes are assigned the average Fe and Th/Ti ratio (normalized to chondrites) compositions of KREEP/Mg-suite rocks, mare basalts, and ferroan anorthosites. The composition of each pixel within these Apollo orbital gamma ray data bases is used to determine its position within the ternary diagram. The color corresponding to this ternary position is then placed on a classification map at that pixel's position within the orbital data bases. The resultant classification map shows spatial transitions among petrologic units, allows direct determination of the relative proportions of each end-member composition in a pixel, and provides more geologic information than can be obtained by using only the elemental data. The map units correspond remarkably well to previously delineated geologic provinces.

Modeling of Ternary Element Site Substitution in NiAl

It is well recognized that ternary alloying additions can have a dramatic impact on the behavior of ordered intermetallic alloys such as nickel aluminides. Properties as diverse as yield strength, fracture strength, fracture mode, cyclic oxidation resistance, creep strength, and thermal and electrical diffusivity can change by orders of magnitude when a few percent or less of a ternary element is added. Yet our understanding of the resulting point defect structures and the simple site preferences of ternary alloying additions is poor because these are extremely difficult characteristics to determine. This disconnection between the understanding of the structure and properties in ordered alloys is at least in part responsible for the limited development and commercialization of these materials. Theoretical methods have provided useful but limited insight in this area, since most techniques suffer from constraints in the type of elements and the crystallographic structures that can be modeled. In an effort to overcome these limitations, the Bozzolo-Ferrante-Smith (BFS) method for alloys was designed. After a brief description of this approximate quantum mechanical approach, we use BFS to investigate the energetics of Si, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Hf, Ta and W additions to B2-ordered, stoichiometric NiAl. In addition to determining the site preference for these alloying additions over a range of compositions, we include results for the concentration dependence of the lattice parameter. In this introductory paper, we performed our analyses in the absence of constitutional and thermal vacancies for alloys of the form Ni50(Al,X)50. Where data exist, a comparison between experimental, theoretical, and BFS results is also included.

Crystal Growth of Ternary Compound Semiconductors in Low Gravity Environment

A low gravity material experiment will be performed in the Material Science Research Rack (MSRR) on International Space Station (ISS). There are two sections of the flight experiment: (I) crystal growth of ZnSe and related ternary compounds, such as ZnSeS and ZnSeTe, by physical vapor transport (PVT) and (II) melt growth of CdZnTe by directional solidification. The main objective of the project is to determine the relative contributions of gravity-driven fluid flows to the compositional distribution, incorporation of impurities and defects, and deviation from stoichiometry observed in the grown crystals as results of buoyancy-driven convection and growth interface fluctuations caused by irregular fluid-flows on Earth. The investigation consists of extensive ground-based experimental and theoretical research efforts and concurrent flight experimentation. This talk will focus on the ground-based studies on the PVT crystal growth of ZnSe and related ternary compounds. The objectives of the ground-based studies are (1) obtain the experimental data and conduct the analyses required to define the optimum growth parameters for the flight experiments, (2) perfect various characterization techniques to establish the standard procedure for material characterization, (3) quantitatively establish the characteristics of the crystals grown on Earth as a basis for subsequent comparative evaluations of the crystals grown in a low-gravity environment and (4) develop theoretical and analytical methods required for such evaluations. ZnSe and related ternary compounds have been grown by vapor transport technique with real time in-situ non-invasive monitoring techniques. The grown crystals have been characterized extensively by various techniques to correlate the grown crystal properties with the growth conditions.

Ultrathin, ternary alloy PtRuFe nanowires, and methods of making same

The present invention provides a method of producing ternary metal-based nanowire networks. The method comprises combining an aqueous mixture of a platinum hydrate, a ruthenium hydrate, and an iron hydrate with a solution of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide in chloroform to form an inverse micellar network; adding a reducing agent to reduce metal ions within the inverse micellar network; and isolating the nanowires. The relative amounts of the platinum, ruthenium and iron in the mixture correlate to the atomic ratio of the platinum, ruthenium and iron in the ternary nanowires. The diameters of the ternary nanowires are from about 0.5 nm to about 5 nm.

Realization of Non‐Equilibrium Wurtzite Structure in Heterovalent Ternary MgSiN 2 Film Grown by Reactive Sputtering

The piezoelectric and ferroelectric applications of heterovalent ternary materials are not well explored. Epitaxial MgSiN 2 films are grown at 600 °C on (111)Pt//(001)Al 2 O 3 substrates by the reactive sputtering method using metallic Mg and Si under the N 2 atmosphere. Detailed X-ray diffraction measurements and transmission electron microscopy observations revealed that the epitaxially grown films on the substrates have a hexagonal wurtzite structure with c-axis out-of-plane orientation. The random occupation of this structure by Mg and Si differs from that of the previously reported structure in which these two cations periodically occupy the cationic sites. However, the lattice spacings closely approximate those that are previously reported, irrespective of the ordering, and they are almost comparable with those of (Al 0.8 Sc 0.2 )N. The wide bandgap of >5.0 eV in deposited MgSiN 2 is compatible with that of AlN and suggests durability against the application of strong external electric fields, possibly to induce polarization switching. In addition, MgSiN 2 is shown to have piezoelectric properties with an effective d 33 value of 2.3 pm V −1 for the first time. This work demonstrates the compositional expansion of hexagonal wurtzite to heterovalent ternary nitrides for novel piezoelectric materials, whose ferroelectricity is expected.

Thermal Properties of the Very Low Thermal Conductivity Ternary Chalcogenide Cu 4 Bi 4 M 9 (M = S, Se)

Temperature-dependent thermal properties of phase-pure polycrystalline ternary chalcogenides Cu 4 Bi 4 S 9 and Cu 4 Bi 4 Se 9 are reported. The structure and bonding in these materials result in very low thermal conductivity values (<0.8 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature) for both materials. The lattice contribution, Debye temperatures, and Sommerfeld coefficient are obtained from low-temperature heat capacity data that also indicate very small electronic contributions to the heat capacity for these materials. This study aids in the identification of new nontoxic, earth-abundant resistive ternary chalcogenide materials with low thermal conductivity for potential thermal barrier coating and rewriteable storage applications.

Phase equilibria and microstructure evolution in the Ni-rich region of binary Ni-Ce and ternary Ni-Ce-X (X=Al, Nb, Cr, Ti) systems at 900 °C

The equilibrium compositions of all phases in the Ni-rich region of binary Ni-Ce and ternary Ni-Ce-X (X=Al, Nb, Cr, Ti) systems at 900 °C were determined experimentally through isothermal annealing for up to 500 h and compared with currently available computational thermodynamic descriptions. Additionally, the study examined how adding a third element to the binary system affects the microstructure by analyzing changes in the volume fraction of the intermetallic phase in the eutectic region. It was observed that Nb and Ti addition lowered the intermetallic fraction in the eutectic region while Al and Cr addition did the opposite. The fraction of intermetallic phase in the eutectic region is very important because it contributes to extreme brittleness of these alloys. Also, Al, Nb and Ti addition promoted different precipitates upon annealing when added in sufficient amounts. The collected data on composition and phase equilibria provides crucial information for improving the thermodynamic assessments of the binary and ternary alloy systems.
