Searching for ternary magnetic Zr–Fe–B compounds through deep machine learning

We use deep machine learning (ML) combined with first-principles calculations to search for energetically favorable ternary magnetic zirconium–iron borides. We show that an iterative ML approach enables efficient screening of vast structural libraries, effectively selecting promising candidates for subsequent first-principles investigations. Twenty-two new Fe-rich ternary compounds with formation energies within 60 meV atom −1 above the known ternary convex hull and with magnetic polarization larger than 0.6 T are identified, among which ten structures exhibit significant uniaxial anisotropy with magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K 1 ⩾ 0.8 MJ m −3 , including a Zr 2 Fe 14 B phase. Such an ML-guided approach dramatically accelerates the discovery of rare-earth-free permanent magnetic materials.

Evolution of the superconducting properties from binary to ternary APC-Nb 3 Sn wires

We present a study conducted on binary Tube Type and ternary powder-in-tube Nb 3 Sn wires manufactured using the artificial pinning centres-internal oxidation method. All the specimens are doped with Zr: oxide nano-particles of this element are responsible for the pinning improvement, both by refining the A-15 grain-size and their own point-pinning contribution. Low-field J c magnetometry confirms that the hadron-hadron Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh) specifications are met by one ternary doped-sample. The differences in microstructure were assessed by scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy to clarify the reasons for the pinning improvement between the two generations. The deviations from the Dew Hughes model are also discussed, underlying some non-linear addition due to competition between the two pinning mechanisms. Finally, we show how the introduction of Ta as a ternary addition influences the A-15 phase by focusing on the radial inhomogeneities, evaluating the T c distribution and Sn composition gradients. The latter are used to model the currents, enabling us to evaluate the individual weights of the pinning mechanisms and their absolute contributions at the High Luminosity-Large Hadron Collider and FCC-hh dipoles operational points.

Compressing deep neural networks on FPGAs to binary and ternary precision with hls4ml

We present the implementation of binary and ternary neural networks in the hls4ml library, designed to automatically convert deep neural network models to digital circuits with FPGA firmware. Starting from benchmark models trained with floating point precision, we investigate different strategies to reduce the network's resource consumption by reducing the numerical precision of the network parameters to binary or ternary. We discuss the trade-off between model accuracy and resource consumption. In addition, we show how to balance between latency and accuracy by retaining full precision on a selected subset of network components. As an example, we consider two multiclass classification tasks: handwritten digit recognition with the MNIST data set and jet identification with simulated proton-proton collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The binary and ternary implementation has similar performance to the higher precision implementation while using drastically fewer FPGA resources.

Ultrathin, ternary alloy PtRuFe nanowires, and methods of making same

The present invention provides a method of producing ternary metal-based nanowire networks. The method comprises combining an aqueous mixture of a platinum hydrate, a ruthenium hydrate, and an iron hydrate with a solution of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide in chloroform to form an inverse micellar network; adding a reducing agent to reduce metal ions within the inverse micellar network; and isolating the nanowires. The relative amounts of the platinum, ruthenium and iron in the mixture correlate to the atomic ratio of the platinum, ruthenium and iron in the ternary nanowires. The diameters of the ternary nanowires are from about 0.5 nm to about 5 nm.

Realization of Non‐Equilibrium Wurtzite Structure in Heterovalent Ternary MgSiN 2 Film Grown by Reactive Sputtering

The piezoelectric and ferroelectric applications of heterovalent ternary materials are not well explored. Epitaxial MgSiN 2 films are grown at 600 °C on (111)Pt//(001)Al 2 O 3 substrates by the reactive sputtering method using metallic Mg and Si under the N 2 atmosphere. Detailed X-ray diffraction measurements and transmission electron microscopy observations revealed that the epitaxially grown films on the substrates have a hexagonal wurtzite structure with c-axis out-of-plane orientation. The random occupation of this structure by Mg and Si differs from that of the previously reported structure in which these two cations periodically occupy the cationic sites. However, the lattice spacings closely approximate those that are previously reported, irrespective of the ordering, and they are almost comparable with those of (Al 0.8 Sc 0.2 )N. The wide bandgap of >5.0 eV in deposited MgSiN 2 is compatible with that of AlN and suggests durability against the application of strong external electric fields, possibly to induce polarization switching. In addition, MgSiN 2 is shown to have piezoelectric properties with an effective d 33 value of 2.3 pm V −1 for the first time. This work demonstrates the compositional expansion of hexagonal wurtzite to heterovalent ternary nitrides for novel piezoelectric materials, whose ferroelectricity is expected.

Thermal Properties of the Very Low Thermal Conductivity Ternary Chalcogenide Cu 4 Bi 4 M 9 (M = S, Se)

Temperature-dependent thermal properties of phase-pure polycrystalline ternary chalcogenides Cu 4 Bi 4 S 9 and Cu 4 Bi 4 Se 9 are reported. The structure and bonding in these materials result in very low thermal conductivity values (<0.8 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature) for both materials. The lattice contribution, Debye temperatures, and Sommerfeld coefficient are obtained from low-temperature heat capacity data that also indicate very small electronic contributions to the heat capacity for these materials. This study aids in the identification of new nontoxic, earth-abundant resistive ternary chalcogenide materials with low thermal conductivity for potential thermal barrier coating and rewriteable storage applications.

Phase equilibria and microstructure evolution in the Ni-rich region of binary Ni-Ce and ternary Ni-Ce-X (X=Al, Nb, Cr, Ti) systems at 900 °C

The equilibrium compositions of all phases in the Ni-rich region of binary Ni-Ce and ternary Ni-Ce-X (X=Al, Nb, Cr, Ti) systems at 900 °C were determined experimentally through isothermal annealing for up to 500 h and compared with currently available computational thermodynamic descriptions. Additionally, the study examined how adding a third element to the binary system affects the microstructure by analyzing changes in the volume fraction of the intermetallic phase in the eutectic region. It was observed that Nb and Ti addition lowered the intermetallic fraction in the eutectic region while Al and Cr addition did the opposite. The fraction of intermetallic phase in the eutectic region is very important because it contributes to extreme brittleness of these alloys. Also, Al, Nb and Ti addition promoted different precipitates upon annealing when added in sufficient amounts. The collected data on composition and phase equilibria provides crucial information for improving the thermodynamic assessments of the binary and ternary alloy systems.

Thermochemistry of sodium rare earth ternary fluorides, NaREF 4

Sodium rare earth fluorides, NaREF 4 (RE = rare earth), are used as luminescent materials for light emission and biomedical applications and are important compositions for extracting and separating RE elements. Solution calorimetric measurements of a series of β-structured NaREF 4 (Na 1.5 RE 1.5 F 6 ) phases with various RE elements determined their heats of formation. Though the lattice contracts from light to heavy RE elements, NaREF 4 compounds show more exothermic enthalpies of formation from binary components with the decrease of RE 3+ radii, contrary to behavior seen in most RE oxide ternary compounds. Furthermore, by constructing Born–Haber cycles, the different slopes of lines relating lattice energies to lattice parameters in binary and ternary fluorides appear to be the reason for this reverse trend, which can be associated with changes in the coordination number of RE cations. These trends and the metastability of sodium light RE fluorides not only reveal the key role of ionic radius in RE compound stability, but also are significant for the design and synthesis of new materials and motivate the more effective utilization of RE.

Simultaneously improved J sc and V oc achieving 19.15% efficiency in ternary blend polymer solar cell containing a Y-type acceptor with thiophene based end groups

Simultaneously enhancing the short-circuit current density (J sc ) and open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of current state-of-the-art polymer solar cells (PSCs) containing wide bandgap polymers as donors and Y6 derivatives as acceptors is of great challenge but essential for further improvement of the photovoltaic performances. Here, in this work, two Y-type non-fullerene acceptors of BTP-T and BTP-TCl were designed and successfully synthesized with relatively weak electron-accepting thiophene based end groups, where blue-shifted absorption and upshifted LUMO energy levels were achieved to fill the well-known absorption gap at 700 nm of typical binary devices based Y-type molecules and rise the output voltage, respectively. Simultaneously increased J sc and V oc were achieved in ternary blend devices containing D18:BTP-eC9:BTP-TCl with a significantly improved PCE up to 19.15 %, which is over 7 % increase compared to the binary device. Our results illustrated the great potential of rational design of Y6 derivatives for constructing ternary PSCs to improve their performances.

Flexibility of oxygen sublattice and hydrogen bond length predict proton mobility in ternary metal oxides

Discovery of fast proton conductors is important for advancing clean energy technologies. This requires a better understanding of proton migration mechanisms. While structural and chemical traits of ternary metal oxides have been related to proton migration barriers, lattice dynamical effects have not been resolved quantitatively. Here, in this work, we introduce a phonon-based dynamic descriptor, termed ‘‘thermal O…O fluctuation,’’ quantifying the flexibility of donor-acceptor oxide-ion pairs. This enables direct comparison of O-sublattice flexibility across diverse metal oxides. Using regression models, we ranked physical descriptors as predictors of proton mobility, finding that H-bond length and thermal O…O fluctuation were the strongest descriptors. Further analysis revealed a critical O…O spacing of 2.4 A˚ at the transition state, which is easier to reach by more flexible donor-acceptor pairs, enabling facile proton transfer. Our results demonstrate oxygen sublattice flexibility as a dynamic descriptor and provide guiding principles for enhancing proton mobility in ternary metal oxides.

Isolating intermediate Mg 11 Cu 6 Al 12 phase in ternary Mg-Cu-Al alloy by electrolytic dealloying

While dealloying is widely used to create nanoporous materials, it has rarely been employed to isolate difficult-to-synthesize intermediate phases. Here, in this work, we show how air-free, electrolytic dealloying at room temperature can be used to isolate the ternary intermetallic Mg 11 Cu 6 Al 12 phase. We create a ternary Mg-Cu-Al parent alloy containing the Mg 11 Cu 6 Al 12 compound and other phases, then subsequently remove these other phases via electrolytic dealloying to isolate the Mg 11 Cu 6 Al 12 phase. Isolated Mg 11 Cu 6 Al 12 phase exhibits ≈1 μm diameter rod-shaped microstructure. Phase and chemical analysis conducted using various techniques, including inductively coupled plasma and lab and synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction, show minimal impurities. This new approach to isolate the Mg 11 Cu 6 Al 12 phase can unlock its use in fundamental research and can be applied to other difficult-to-synthesize intermetallic compounds.

Alkaline Earth-Based Ternary Chalcogenide Nanocrystals: Cadmium- and Lead-Free Optical Materials

As some of the most abundant elements on the Earth’s crust, alkaline earths bear great potential in Cd- and Pb-free catalytic, energy conversion, and light-emitting devices. Further, because large electropositive alkaline earths (Ae) can adopt high coordination numbers, they offer structural complexity beyond the tetrahedral (c-Si, II–VI, III–V) or octahedral (IV–VI) atomic sites that─with the notable exception of halide perovskites─are ubiquitous among nanocrystalline semiconductors. Here, in this work, we present a general route to photoluminescent 6–125 nm nanocrystals of ternary AeIn 2 Ch 4 semiconductors (Ae = Sr, Ba; Ch = S, Se) featuring eight- (Ae) as well as four-coordinate (In and Ch) atomic sites. Powder X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, optical absorption, photoluminescence, and solid-state (ss)NMR spectroscopies attest to the ternary composition and phase purity of the nanocrystals. Continuous shape measures pinpoint the degree of distortion of individual crystallographic sites from ideal coordination polyhedra, allowing us to identify two very distinct types of Se coordination environments. Based on their higher order, pseudo-3-fold rotational symmetry, we assign 77 Se ssNMR peaks with negligible chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) to pyramidalized Se sites with vacant-trigonal bipyramid-like geometries and those with larger CSA to lower symmetry Se sites with seesaw-distorted geometries. Calculations help to better understand the electronic band structure of these materials. The nanocrystals are stable at room temperature in open air for several weeks, and some compositions up to 1000 °C under Ar, making them strong candidates for practical applications.

Grid-Scale Ternary-Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage for Flexible Operation of Nuclear Power Generation under High Penetration of Renewable Energy Sources

In this work, the integration of a grid-scale ternary-Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage (t-PTES) with a nuclear power generation to enhance operation flexibility is assessed using physics-based models and digital real time simulation. A part of the electricity from the nuclear power generation is delivered to the grid, and the balance is used to power a heat pump that can be augmented by an auxiliary resistive load element to increase the charging rate of the thermal storage. This increases the thermal potential between hot and cold thermal stores (usually solid materials or molten salts inside large storage tanks). The thermal energy is transformed back into electricity by reversing the heat pump cycle. Different transient scenarios including startup, shutdown, and power change for grid-connected operation are simulated to determine the behavior of the hybrid nuclear-t-PTES system operating under variable loads that constitute a departure from conventional, baseload nuclear plant operation schemes. Ternary refers to the three modes operation: (i) heat pump (including heating coil), (ii) heat engine, and (iii) simultaneous operation of heat pump (including heating coil) and heat engine during changeover from pumping to generation or vice-versa. The controllability of t-PTES in the short timescales as a dynamic load is used to demonstrate operational flexibility of hybrid nuclear plants for flexible operation through advanced load management. The integration of t-PTES into nuclear power systems enhances the system flexibility and is an enabler for high penetration of renewable energy resources.

Analysis and Thermal Property Investigations into Ternary Actinide Chloride Salt Systems Containing UCl3 and PuCl3

While regulators, the scientific community, and MSR developers still lack access to literature data on the thermal properties of clean fuel salts, even less information is available on the properties of fuel salts containing impurities. It is essential to understand, benchmark, and predict crucial data on the changes in thermal properties of fuel salt systems due to impurities arising from moisture, corrosion, and reactor operation (i.e., fission products). This research focuses on two actinide fuel salts (1) to investigate a worst-case scenario buildup of actinide fission product in a NaCl-UCl3 eutectic fuel salt and (2) to investigate NaCl-PuCl3 eutectic salt after 1000 hours of operation in a natural circulation flow loop flow to determine if corrosion or atmospheric (moisture/oxygen) products are present. For the first salt, a conservative assumption or worst-case scenario, for fission product buildup in a fuel salt was investigated by adding PuCl3 to eutectic 67 mol% NaCl – 33 mol% UCl3 salt resulting in a ternary salt having a composition of 61 mol% NaCl – 30 mol% UCl3 – 9mol% PuCl3. Addition of PuCl3 to eutectic NaCl-UCl3 resulted in a ternary salt that had a higher melting temperature than either the NaCl-PuCl3 or NaCl-UCl3 binary eutectic mixture. Addition of PuCl3 also resulted in an increase in density which was expected. The second salt was extracted from a micro loop. The composition of the fuel (primary) salt prior to flow loop operations was determined to be 64 mol% NaCl – 36 mol% PuCl3, however, the post-flow loop salt showed increased levels of MgCl2 and NaCl changing the salt composition to 10 mol% MgCl2 – 63mol% NaCl – 26mol% PuCl3) indicating the primary salt interacted with the rinse salt. Analysis of the post flow loop salt detected low concentrations of Al, Ni, Co, Nb, and Zr, most likely corrosion products from the flow loop material of construction. Contamination of the fuel salt (with the rinse salt NaCl-MgCl2) decreased the density by approximately 10% and reduced the onset of melting temperature by 50 °C, from 451 °C to approximately 400 °C. Results from the fission product simulated salt (61 mol% NaCl – 30 mol% UCl3 – 9mol% PuCl3) and the corrosion product salt (10 mol% MgCl2 – 63mol% NaCl – 26mol% PuCl3) will be included in two separate manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.

Emergence of Local Magnetic Moment in Ternary TaWSe 2 Single Crystal via Atomic Clustering

Ternary transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide a versatile platform to explore novel electronic and magnetic ground states via compositional substitution and local structural modulations. Using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S), magnetic property measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the emergence of local magnetic moments driven by the clustering of Ta atoms in ternary TaWSe 2 single crystals is analyzed. STM topography reveals triangular clusters of Ta atoms embedded within W-rich regions of TaWSe 2 . These clusters exhibit a consistent shape and an orderly arrangement throughout the surfaces. DFT calculations show that these Ta clusters induce local strain, giving rise to localized magnetic moments. The magnetic behavior is further corroborated by temperature-dependent magnetization measurements, which exhibit a magnetic anomaly at ∼50 K. In conclusion, this study offers a pathway to engineer magnetism in TMD systems with potential applications in spintronic and quantum materials.

Low‐Temperature and High‐Rate Rechargeable Aluminum Batteries Enabled by Ternary Eutectic Electrolytes

Abstract Rechargeable aluminum batteries (RABs) have garnered extensive scientific attention as a promising alternative chemistry due to the inherent advantages associated with aluminum (Al) metal anodes, including their high theoretical capacities, cost‐effectiveness, environmental friendliness, and inherent non‐flammable properties. Nonetheless, the practical energy density of RABs is constrained by the electrolytes that support lower operational voltage windows. Herein, we report a ternary eutectic electrolyte composed of 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium chloride ([C 2 C 1 im]Cl):1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium chloride ([C 4 C 1 im]Cl):aluminum chloride (AlCl 3 ) for the application of RABs. The electrolyte exhibits a high operational potential window (~3 V vs. Al/Al 3+ on SS 316) and high ionic conductivity (~8.3 mS cm −1 ) while exhibiting only a low temperature glass transition at −65 °C suitable for all‐climate conditions. Al||graphene nanoplatelets cell delivers a high capacity of ~117 mAh/g, and ~43 mAh/g at a very high current densities of 1 A/g and 5 A/g, respectively. The cells render a reversible capacity of 20 mAh/g at −20 °C and 17 mAh/g at −40 °C, indicating their suitability for operation under extreme environmental conditions. We comprehensively evaluated the design and optimization of carbon paper‐based battery systems. The ternary eutectic electrolyte demonstrates exceptional electrochemical performance, thus signifying its substantial potential for utilization in high‐performance energy storage systems in all climates.

Recent advances in copper chalcogenide-based nanocrystals (NCs), copper sulfide, and copper selenide derived nanostructures, have drawn considerable attention. However, reports of crystal phase and shape engineering of binary or ternary copper telluride NCs remain rare. Here, a colloidal hot-injection approach for producing binary copper/tin telluride, and ternary copper tin telluride NCs with controllable compositions, crystal structures, and morphologies is reported. Here, the crystal phase and growth behavior of these tellurides are systematically studied from both experimental and theoretical perspectives.

Crystal and electronic structure of the ternary Zintl bismuthide BaLiBi

Reported is the accurate refinement of the structure of the ternary bismuthide BaLiBi, based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. This compound crystallizes with the ZrBeSi structure type with the space group P6 3 /mmc (no. 194), a=4.9917(6) Å, c=9.079(2) Å, V=195.92(7) Å 3 with two formula units per unit cell. In addition to being a colored ternary variant of the AlB 2 type, the crystal structure of BaLiBi can be also viewed as a “stuffed” variant of the NiAs structure, where the Bi atoms form a hexagonal close packing, the Ba atoms occupy the octahedral voids in this packing, and the Li atoms are located between adjacent tetrahedral voids on their common triangular faces. Furthermore, in the absence of direct Bi–Bi interactions, the BaLiBi crystal structure rationalized according to the notation (Ba 2+ )(Li + )(Bi 3− ), suggesting an electron-balanced composition, i. e., a Zintl phase. In line with this notation, scalar-relativistic first-principle calculations with the LMTO code reveal a semiconducting ground state, with a bandgap of about 0.6 eV. Fully relativistic electronic structure calculations predict a semimetallic ground state.
