Coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetic dimers in topological insulators

The addition of magnetic impurities in topological insulators (TIs) can drive ferromagnetic order that leads to quantum anomalous Hall transport well below the Curie temperature. The fragility of the quantized regime has been ascribed to the random nature of the magnetic moment distribution. Here, we refine this hypothesis by using inelastic neutron scattering and density-functional theory calculations to show that two antagonistic components define the magnetism in Mn-substituted SnTe, thereby limiting the effectiveness of dilute magnetic TIs. One component is strongly bound antiferromagnetic dimers that compete with ferromagnetic order. In conclusion, the other component consists of undimerized moments where ferromagnetic order develops via long-range interactions.

Magnetism and topological Hall effect in antiferromagnetic Ru 2 MnSn-based Heusler compounds

Heusler compounds and alloys based on them are of great recent interest because they exhibit a wide variety of spin structures, magnetic properties, and electron-transport phenomena. Their properties are tunable by alloying and we have investigated L2 1 -orderd compound Ru 2 MnSn and its alloys by varying the atomic Mn:Sn composition. While antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature of 361 K was observed in Ru 2 MnSn, the Mn-poor Ru 2 Mn 0.8 Sn 1.2 alloy exhibits properties of a diluted antiferromagnet in which there are localized regions of uncompensated Mn spins. Furthermore, a noncoplanar spin structure, evident from a topological Hall-effect contribution to the room-temperature Hall resistivity, is realized in Ru 2 Mn 0.8 Sn 1.2 . Finally, our combined experimental and theoretical analysis shows that in the Ru 2 Mn 0.8 Sn 1.2 alloy, the magnetic properties can be explained in terms of a noncoplanar antiferromagnetic scissor mode, which creates a small net magnetization in a magnetic field and subsequently yields a Berry curvature with a strong topological Hall effect.

Evidence for electronic signature of a magnetic transition in the topological magnet HoSbTe

Topological insulators with intrinsic magnetic order are emerging as an exciting platform to realize fundamentally new excitations from topological quantum states of matter. To study these systems and their physics, people have proposed a variety of magnetic topological insulator systems, including HoSbTe, an antiferromagnetic weak topological insulator candidate. Here, in this work, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to probe the electronic structure of HoSbTe with antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic orders that are tuned by applying an external magnetic field. Although around the Fermi energy we find minor differences between the quasiparticle interferences under the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders, deep inside the valance region, a quasiparticle interference signal emerges with ferromagnetism. This observation is consistent with our first-principles calculations indicating the magnetism-driven transition of the electronic states in this spin-orbit coupled topological magnet.

Topological Hall Effect in Antiferromagnetic Co-Doped Fe 3 GaTe 2

Fe 3 GaTe 2 is van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T C ranging from 350 K to 380 K, followed upon cooling by a ferrimagnetic transition near room temperature. Substituting Fe with Co was previously reported to induce antiferromagnetism (AFM) at a Co fraction dependent Néel temperature TN. In this work, we confirm the overall phase diagram of the Fe 3-x Co x GaTe 2 series as a function of x and temperature via magnetization and electrical transport measurements. For x ≥ 0.6 the Hall effect is observed to mimic the magnetization as the AF ground state is suppressed by the external magnetic field via a metamagnetic transition, thus displaying an anomalous Hall response. At low temperatures, we also observe a pronounced topological Hall signal peaking at μ 0 H = 4 T, or within the metamagnetic transition region of fields. This observation points to the presence of magnetic field-induced chiral spin textures, such as skyrmions upon approaching magnetization saturation. Remarkably, magnetic force microscopy (MFM) reveals the emergence of nearly circular magnetic domains, with diameters on the order of 100–200 nm, within the antiferromagnetic phase. Here, a detailed analysis of the MFM images indicates that the topological Hall effect is closely linked to the field-induced stabilization of magnetic domain structures, likely exhibiting chiral textures. This observation suggests the possible formation of skyrmions already in the AFM phase, i.e., AFM skyrmions, that evolve into ferromagnetic (FM) ones upon increasing the magnetic field. Consequently, Co-doped Fe 3 GaTe 2 might provide a platform to investigate the transformation of skyrmions, initially coupled antiferromagnetically into ferromagnetic skyrmions, and to explore its impact on the topological and skyrmion Hall effects.

Termination switching of antiferromagnetic proximity effect in topological insulator

This work reports the ferromagnetism of topological insulator, (Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 (BST), with a Curie temperature of approximately 120 K induced by magnetic proximity effect (MPE) of an antiferromagnetic CrSe. The MPE was shown to be highly dependent on the stacking order of the heterostructure, as well as the interface symmetry: Growing CrSe on top of BST results in induced ferromagnetism, while growing BST on CrSe yielded no evidence of an MPE. Cr-termination in the former case leads to double-exchange interactions between Cr 3+ surface states and Cr 2+ bulk states. This Cr 3+ -Cr 2+ exchange stabilizes the ferromagnetic order localized at the interface and magnetically polarizes the BST Sb band. In contrast, Se-termination at the CrSe/BST interface yields no detectable MPE. These results directly confirm the MPE in BST films and provide critical insights into the sensitivity of the surface state.

Topological spin memory of antiferromagnetically coupled skyrmion pairs in Co/Gd/Pt multilayers

Antiferromagnetically (AFM) coupled skyrmions offer potential advantages for spintronic devices, including reduced dipolar fields that may enable smaller skyrmion sizes and a reduction of the skyrmion Hall effect. However, the topological stability of AFM-coupled skyrmions subjected to dramatic spin deformation through low-temperature cycling has not been investigated. We report the discovery of a topological spin memory effect for AFM-coupled skyrmion pairs in [Co/Gd/Pt](10) multilayered films. Photoemission electron microscopy imaging shows that bubble skyrmions in the multilayer that are stable at room temperature evolve into complex in-plane spin textures as the temperature is lowered and reform completely when the sample is warmed back up. Simulations demonstrate that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions play a key role in this spin memory effect, and furthermore reveal that the topological charge is preserved throughout the dramatic spin texture rearrangement and recovery. These results highlight a key aspect of topological protection-the preservation of the topological properties under continuous deformation-and also provide a promising avenue for information encryption and recovery.

Evolution of magnetic interactions in Sb-substituted MnBi 2 Te 4

The Mn(Bi 1–x Sb x ) 2 Te 4 series is purported to span from an antiferromagnetic (AF) topological insulator at x = 0 to a trivial AF insulator at x = 1. Here we report on neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering studies of the magnetic interactions across this series. All compounds measured possess ferromagnetic (FM) triangular layers and we find a crossover from AF to FM interlayer coupling near x = 1 for our samples. The large spin gap at x = 0 closes rapidly and the average FM exchange interactions within the triangular layer increase with Sb substitution. Similar to a previous study of MnBi 2 Te 4 , we find severe spectral broadening which increases dramatically across the compositional series. In addition to broadening, we observe an additional sharp magnetic excitation in MnSb 2 Te 4 that may indicate the development of local magnetic modes originating from antisite disorder between Mn and Sb sublattices. Here, the results suggest that both substitutional and antisite disorder contribute substantially to the magnetism in Mn(Bi 1–x Sb x ) 2 Te 4 .

Antiferromagnetism-driven two-dimensional topological nodal-point superconductivity

Magnet/superconductor hybrids (MSHs) hold the promise to host emergent topological superconducting phases. Both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) magnetic systems in proximity to -wave superconductors have shown evidence of gapped topological superconductivity with zero-energy end states and chiral edge modes. Recently, it was proposed that the bulk transition-metal dichalcogenide 4Hb-TaS 2 is a gapless topological nodal-point superconductor (TNPSC). However, there has been no experimental realization of a TNPSC in a MSH system yet. Here we present the discovery of TNPSC in antiferromagnetic (AFM) monolayers on top of an s-wave superconductor. Our calculations show that the topological phase is driven by the AFM order, resulting in the emergence of a gapless time-reversal invariant topological superconducting state. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy we observe a low-energy edge mode, which separates the topological phase from the trivial one, at the boundaries of antiferromagnetic islands. As predicted by the calculations, we find that the relative spectral weight of the edge mode depends on the edge’s atomic configuration. Our results establish the combination of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity as a novel route to design 2D topological quantum phases.

Quasi-two-dimensional ferromagnetism and anisotropic interlayer couplings in the magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) is a promising van der Waals layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator that combines a topologically nontrivial inverted Bi-Te band gap with ferromagnetic (FM) layers of Mn ions. Here, the inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals reported here describes rather complex magnetism in MBT. The magnetic anisotropy that controls the bulk and surface magnetic field response of MBT is found to have contributions from both single-ion and interlayer two-ion terms. A description of the quasi-two-dimensional intralayer FM spin waves requires long-range, competing FM and AFM interactions and anomalous damping. While this might suggest carrier-mediated magnetic coupling, abinitio calculations in insulating MBT also find long-range interactions, and classical spin dynamics simulations suggest that magnetic vacancies are at least partially responsible for observations of anomalous damping near the zone boundary.

Anyon superconductivity from topological criticality in a Hofstadter–Hubbard model

We argue that the combination of strong repulsive interactions and high magnetic fields can generate electron pairing and superconductivity. Inspired by the large lattice constants of moiré materials, which make large flux per unit cell accessible at laboratory fields, we study the triangular lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model at one-quarter flux quantum per plaquette, where previous literature has argued that a chiral spin liquid separates a weak-coupling integer quantum Hall phase and a strong-coupling topologically trivial antiferromagnetic insulator at a density of one electron per site. We argue that topological superconductivity emerges upon doping in the vicinity of the integer quantum Hall to chiral spin liquid transition. We employ exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods to examine this theoretical scenario and find that electronic pairing indeed occurs on both sides of criticality over a remarkably broad range of interaction strengths. On the chiral spin liquid side, our results provide a concrete model realization of the long-hypothesized mechanism of anyon superconductivity. Our study thus establishes a beyond-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer route to electron pairing in a well-controlled limit, relying crucially on the interplay between electron correlations and band topology.

Tunable topological Hall effects in noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn/Pt bilayers

Noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn has attracted wide interest as it is a candidate for Weyl semimetal. Here, we report the observation of topological Hall like signals in Mn3Sn/Pt bilayers grown on Al 2 O 3 (0001). X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy results confirm the high epitaxial quality of the c-axis-oriented Mn3Sn films. The detected topological Hall resistivity shows a broad temperature range from 210 to 365 K by tuning the thickness of Mn3Sn from 3 to 15 nm. Compared with previously reported topological Hall effects in Mn3Sn at temperatures below 50 K, the observed high-temperature topological Hall signal is likely due to the stabilization of topological spin textures enabled by the strong spin–orbit coupling of the Pt overlayer and the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction at the Mn3Sn/Pt interface.

Magnetic structure of topological nodal-line semimetal EuSb 2

Here, we investigated the magnetic structure of the magnetic topological nodal-line semimetal EuSb 2 using x-ray resonant magnetic scattering at the Eu 𝐿 3 absorption edge. Forbidden magnetic reflections confirm antiferromagnetic ordering with propagation vector 𝐪 = (0.5,0,0) below 𝑇 N ≈ 27 K. Azimuthal-angle-dependent measurements reveal that the Eu moments are aligned along the monoclinic 𝑏 axis. Comparison between the measured 𝐐-dependent magnetic Bragg peak intensities and calculations based on representation analysis identifies the magnetic structure as the A-type antiferromagnetic 𝛤 4 representation with a (++−−) arrangement along the 𝑎 direction. These results establish the microscopic magnetic structure of EuSb 2 and provide a basis for understanding the interplay between antiferromagnetism and topological electronic states in this system.

Tuning magnetism and band topology through antisite defects in Sb-doped MnBi 4 ⁢Te 7

The fine control of magnetism and electronic structure in a magnetic topological insulator is crucial in order to realize various novel magnetic topological states including axion insulators, magnetic Weyl semimetals, Chern insulators, etc. Through crystal growth, transport, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction measurements, we show that under Sb doping the newly discovered intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator MnBi 4 Te 7 evolves from AFM to ferromagnetic (FM) and then ferrimagnetic. We attribute this to the formation of Mn(Bi,Sb) antisites upon doping, which results in additional Mn sublattices that modify the delicate interlayer magnetic interactions and cause the dominant Mn sublattice to go from AFM to FM. We further investigate the effect of antisites on the band topology using the first-principles calculations. Without considering antisites, the series evolves from AFM topological insulator (x=0) to FM axion insulators. In the exaggerated case of 16.7% of periodic antisites, the band topology is modified and a type-I magnetic Weyl semimetal phase can be realized at intermediate dopings. Therefore, this doping series provides a fruitful platform with continuously tunable magnetism and topology for investigating emergent phenomena, including quantum anomalous Hall effect, Fermi arc states, etc.

Elucidating proximity magnetism through polarized neutron reflectometry and machine learning

Polarized neutron reflectometry is a powerful technique to interrogate the structures of multilayered magnetic materials with depth sensitivity and nanometer resolution. However, reflectometry profiles often inhabit a complicated objective function landscape using traditional fitting methods, posing a significant challenge for parameter retrieval. In this work, we develop a data-driven framework to recover the sample parameters from polarized neutron reflectometry data with minimal user intervention. We train a variational autoencoder to map reflectometry profiles with moderate experimental noise to an interpretable, low-dimensional space from which sample parameters can be extracted with high resolution. We apply our method to recover the scattering length density profiles of the topological insulator–ferromagnetic insulator heterostructure Bi2Se3/EuS exhibiting proximity magnetism in good agreement with the results of conventional fitting. We further analyze a more challenging reflectometry profile of the topological insulator–antiferromagnet heterostructure (Bi,Sb)2Te3/Cr2O3 and identify possible interfacial proximity magnetism in this material. We anticipate that the framework developed here can be applied to resolve hidden interfacial phenomena in a broad range of layered systems.

Topological Doping and Superconductivity in Cuprates: An Experimental Perspective

Hole doping into a correlated antiferromagnet leads to topological stripe correlations, involving charge stripes that separate antiferromagnetic spin stripes of opposite phases. The topological spin stripe order causes the spin degrees of freedom within the charge stripes to feel a geometric frustration with their environment. In the case of cuprates, where the charge stripes have the character of a hole-doped two-leg spin ladder, with corresponding pairing correlations, anti-phase Josephson coupling across the spin stripes can lead to a pair-density-wave order in which the broken translation symmetry of the superconducting wave function is accommodated by pairs with finite momentum. This scenario is now experimentally verified by recently reported measurements on La2−xBaxCuO4 with x=1/8. While pair-density-wave order is not common as a cuprate ground state, it provides a basis for understanding the uniform d-wave order that is more typical in superconducting cuprates.

Intertwined charge and spin density waves in a topological kagome material

Using neutrons and x rays we show the topological kagome antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn for T < 285 K forms a homogeneous spin and charge ordered state comprising a longitudinally polarized spin density wave with wave vector k β = k β c ̂ , a helical modulated version of the room temperature antichiral magnetic order with k χ = k χ c ̂ , and charge density waves with wave vectors 2 k β , 2 k χ , and k β + k χ . Though k χ and k β coincide for 200 K < T < 230 K , they exhibit distinct continuous T dependencies before locking to commensurate values of k β = 1 12 c * and k χ = 5 48 c * at low T . Density functional theory indicates this complex modulated state may be associated with the nesting of Fermi surfaces from correlated flat kagome bands, which host Weyl nodes that are annihilated as it forms. Antiferromagnetic order in the layered magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 ⁢Se 4 probed by resonant soft x-ray scattering

The quasi-two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Se 4 , stabilized via nonequilibrium molecular beam epitaxy, is investigated by resonant soft x-ray scattering. Kiessig fringes are observed, confirming a high sample quality and a thin film thickness of 10 septuple layers (∼13 nm). An antiferromagnetic Bragg peak is observed at the structurally forbidden reflection, whose magnetic nature is validated by studying its temperature, energy, and polarization dependence. Through a detailed analysis, an A-type antiferromagetic order with in-plane moments is implied. This alternative spin structure in MnBi 2 Se 4 , in contrast to the Ising antiferromagnetic states in other magnetic topological insulators, might be relevant for hosting new topological states.

Large anomalous Nernst effect and topological Nernst effect in the noncollinear antiferromagnet NdMn 2⁢ Ge 2

ThCr 2 Si 2 -type NdMn 2 Ge 2 was recently proposed to be a magnetic skyrmion candidate exhibiting the topological Hall effect. In this work, we report magnetic, electronic, and thermoelectric measurements for NdMn 2 Ge 2 single crystals. We show that, in the canted antiferromagnetic phase and the conical magnetic phase with a large out-of-plane ferromagnetic component, this system exhibits both an anomalous Nernst effect and a topological Nernst effect. Here we argue that NdMn 2 Ge 2 is a unique magnetic material, with its topological characteristics associated with the Berry phases in both real space and momentum space.
