2017 National Household Travel Survey - Arizona Add-On

# 2017 National Household Travel Survey – Arizona Add-On The Arizona add-on survey supplements the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. ## Data Collection Agency The Federal Highway Administration conducted the NHTS and corresponding add-on surveys. ## Methodology This survey documents the demographic, attitudinal, and travel behavior for all members of 2,987 households, as collected from April 2016 to April 2017. Daily travel details provide insight into work and school commutes, non-emergency medical trips, shopping trips, and even how travel differs in the summer and on weekends as compared to a typical weekday when school is in session. When statistically weighted to adjust for survey biases, the data demographically represents all Americans and is appropriate for analysis at the national and census region levels. ## Survey Records Survey records include a total of 6,081 participants. ## Transportation Data The NHTS Arizona add-on data package contains a demographic and socioeconomic composition of 6,081 people from 2,987 households in Arizona, as well as detailed information on the travel behavior of each household for a designated 24-hour period. The survey logged more than 258,000 vehicle miles of travel by participants during 19,779 trips. Identifying Light-Duty Vehicle Travel from Large-Scale Multimodal Wearable GPS Data with Novelty Detection Algorithms

Identifying travel mode within travel survey data sets, especially light-duty vehicle (LDV) travel, is foundational, though nontrivial, to travel behavior analysis and fuel consumption estimation. Current travel mode detection approaches require well-sampled and balanced data sets with ground truth travel mode labels. They are rarely applied and validated on large-scale, real-world data sets, which may not satisfy the data requirements. This paper proposes an LDV travel mode detection model as a supplement to current travel mode detection methods, for the case when the training set is highly (and/or completely) unbalanced, to the extent that classical machine-learning approaches become difficult or impossible to deploy. The proposed model uses a novelty detection technique-one-class support vector machines (OCSVMs)-and a novel exhaustive feature extraction (EFE) technique on continuous time series data (i.e., Global Positioning System [GPS] speed profiles) for single-mode trip trajectories. Training and validation of the model are conducted on a large-scale, real-world data set. The proposed method accurately identifies LDV trips from a broad set of multimodal trips by leveraging a wealth of preexisting in-vehicle GPS travel data. Additional sensitivity analysis sheds light on the optimal training size, which will benefit applications limited by highly imbalanced data. The paper also discusses performance comparison with regular machine-learning approaches, the model's robustness, and the potential to extend the proposed model to multimodal prediction.

2014-2015 Puget Sound Regional Travel Study

The 2014-2015 Puget Sound Regional Travel Study collected information about household and individual travel patterns for residents throughout a four-county region in Washington State. Study results were used to update the region's travel and land-use models and to calibrate local traffic and travel models. The study also helped the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) and its regional partners develop plans that accommodate the diverse travel needs and preferences of residents. The Resource Systems Group administered the study on behalf of PSRC. Global positioning system (GPS)-equipped smartphones were used to provide data pertaining to the daily travel of 547 individual participants. Because the region's university students may have been underrepresented in the initial 2014 household travel study, the PSRC added a college-population travel survey in fall 2014. In spring 2015, a second household data collection effort was conducted to increase the frequency of data collection and to collect GPS data as well as a sample of longitudinal data from households that completed the 2014 survey.

2014 Southern Nevada Household Travel Survey

The 2014 Southern Nevada Household Travel Survey collected information from residents in the Las Vegas area to update the regional travel demand model and assess travel behavior. The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada contracted with Westat to conduct the survey. The survey was conducted in two phases—from March to May 2014 and from August to October 2014. Participants provided demographic and travel data (via a travel log). A 10% subsample (1,694 participants) was randomly selected to take part in a wearable global positioning system (GPS) technology-based component of the study, the purpose of which was to assess the level of trip under-reporting in the self-reported travel logs. Participants in the GPS portion of the study were instructed to record trips in their travel logs on the first day only, while passively recording their travel for three full days.

2000-2001 California Statewide Household Travel Survey

The 2000-2001 California Statewide Household Travel Survey, conducted under the auspices of the California Department of Transportation, was conducted between October 2000 and December 2001 among households located in each of California's 58 counties. The purpose of the study was to update the statewide database of household socioeconomic and travel information and helped to refine travel estimates, models, and forecasts throughout California. The survey was an essential element in determining statewide and regional travel patterns. A total of 17,040 households participated in the survey, contributing household socioeconomic and travel data. Travel variables collected include trip times, mode, activity at location, origin and destination, and vehicle occupancy, among other travel-related data from 134,173 trips. Residents completed diary records of their daily travel over a 24-hour (weekday) or 48-hour period (Friday/Saturday or Sunday/Monday pair).
