Exceptional Electron-Rich Heteroaromatic Pentacycle for Ultralow Band Gap Conjugated Polymers and Photothermal Therapy

Stable redox-active conjugated molecules with exceptional electron-donating abilities are key components for the design and synthesis of ultralow band gap conjugated polymers. While hallmark electron-rich examples such as pentacene derivatives have been thoroughly explored, their poor air stability has hampered their broad incorporation into conjugated polymers for practical applications. Herein, we describe the synthesis of the electron-rich, fused pentacyclic pyrazino[2,3-b:5,6-b’]diindolizine (PDIz) motif and detail its optical and redox behavior. The PDIz ring system exhibits a lower oxidation potential and a reduced optical band gap than the isoelectronic pentacene while retaining greater air stability in both solution and the solid state. The enhanced stability and electron density, together with readily installed solubilizing groups and polymerization handles, allow for the use of the PDIz motif in the synthesis of a series of conjugated polymers with band gaps as small as 0.71 eV. Importantly; the tunable absorbance throughout the biologically relevant near-infrared I and II regions enables the use of these PDIz-based polymers as efficient photothermal therapeutic reagents for laser ablation of cancer cells.

Ferromagnetism with in-plane magnetization, Dirac spin-gapless semiconducting properties, and tunable topological states in two-dimensional rare-earth metal dinitrides

Since the successful synthesis of bulk single crystals MoN 2 and ReN 2 , which have a layered structure, transition-metal dinitrides have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Here, we focus on rare-earth metal (Rem) elements, and propose seven stable Rem dinitride monolayers with a 1T structure, namely, 1T-RemN 2 . We use first-principles calculations, and find that these monolayers have a ferromagnetic ground state with in-plane magnetization. Without spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the band structures are spin-polarized with Dirac points at the Fermi level. Remarkably, the 1T-LuN 2 monolayer exhibits an isotropic magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy in the xy plane with in-plane magnetization, indicating easy tunability of the magnetization direction. Additionally, when rotating the magnetization vector in the xy plane, we propose a model that accurately describes the variation of the SOC band gap and the two possible topological states (Weyl-like semimetal and Chern insulator states) whose properties are tunable. The Weyl-like semimetal state is a critical point between the two Chern insulator states with opposite sign of the Chern numbers (±1). The nontrivial band gap (up to 60.3 meV) and the Weyl-like semimetal state are promising for applications in spintronic devices.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride Quantum Dots (g‐C 3 N 4 QDs): From Chemistry to Applications

Since their emergence in 2014, graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g-C 3 N 4 QDs) have attracted much interest from the scientific community due to their distinctive physicochemical features, including structural, morphological, electrochemical, and optoelectronic properties. Owing to their desirable characteristics, such as non-zero band gap, ability to be chemically functionalized or doped, possessing tunable properties, outstanding dispersibility in different media, and biocompatibility, g-C 3 N 4 QDs have shown promise for photocatalysis, energy devices, sensing, bioimaging, solar cells, optoelectronics, among other applications. As these fields are rapidly evolving, it is very strenuous to pinpoint the emerging challenges of the g-C 3 N 4 QDs development and application during the last decade, mainly due to the lack of critical reviews of the innovations in the g-C 3 N 4 QDs synthesis pathways and domains of application. Herein, an extensive survey is conducted on the g-C 3 N 4 QDs synthesis, characterization, and applications. Scenarios for the future development of g-C 3 N 4 QDs and their potential applications are highlighted and discussed in detail. In conclusion, the provided critical section suggests a myriad of opportunities for g-C 3 N 4 QDs, especially for their synthesis and functionalization, where a combination of eco-friendly/single step synthesis and chemical modification may be used to prepare g-C 3 N 4 QDs with, for example, enhanced photoluminescence and production yields.

Tuning Thermal Stability through Dopant Size in Chemically Doped DPP–Thiophene Polymers

Molecular doping of conjugated polymers (CPs) is a key strategy for improving the performance of organic electronics devices, particularly thermoelectrics. Doped donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymers, characterized by a tunable energy gap between the Fermi level and the transport band, show great promise in achieving high electrical conductivity (σ) while preserving a favorable Seebeck coefficient (S). Despite the promising performance enhancement of chemically doped D–A polymers, their thermal stability remains largely underexplored, a crucial consideration for the long-term operation of organic thermoelectric devices. In this study, we investigated the dopant size-dependent thermal stability of a diketopyrrolopyrrole-thiophene (DPP-T) D–A copolymer, utilizing two p-dopants: 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F 4 TCNQ) and Mo(tfd-CO 2 Me) 3 . Temperature-dependent UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy revealed that DPP-T/F 4 TCNQ is more prone to dedoping under a high temperature thermal stress than DPP-T/Mo(tfd-CO 2 Me) 3 . Although the F 4 TCNQ doped polymer shows higher initial in-plane conductivity than its Mo(tfd-CO 2 Me) 3 counterpart, it undergoes a conductivity loss of more than an order of magnitude after annealing at 120 °C for 30 min. In contrast, the in-plane conductivity of DPP-T/Mo(tfd-CO 2 Me) 3 remains stable under the same thermal conditions. Thermogravimetric analysis ruled out dopant sublimation as a primary contributor to dedoping, leading us to attribute the conductivity loss in F 4 TCNQ-doped DPP-T to dopant phase separation and migration. This observation was further confirmed by X-ray scattering studies and nanoscale infrared microscopy and spectroscopy studies. This work could provide further insights into the thermal stability of doped conjugated polymers and suggests that incorporating bulkier dopants is an effective strategy to enhance the thermal robustness of doped DPP-type systems.

Floquet engineering of tilted and gapped Dirac bandstructure in 1T$$^\prime$$-MoS$$_2$$

Abstract We have developed a rigorous theoretical formalism for Floquet engineering, investigating, and subsequently tailoring most crucial electronic properties of 1T $$^\prime$$ ′ -MoS $$_2$$ 2 by applying an external high-frequency dressing field within the off-resonance regime. It was recently demonstrated that monolayer semiconducting 1T $$^\prime$$ ′ -MoS $$_2$$ 2 exhibits tunable and gapped spin- and valley-polarized tilted Dirac bands. The electron-photon dressed states depend strongly on the polarization of the applied irradiation and reflect a full complexity of the low-energy Hamiltonian for non-irradiated material. We have calculated and analyzed the properties of the electron dressed states corresponding to linear and circular polarization of a dressing field by focusing on their symmetry, anisotropy, tilting, direct and indirect band gaps. Circularly polarized dressing field is known for transition into a new electronic state with broken time-reversal symmetry and a non-zero Chern number, and therefore, the combination of these topologically non-trivial phases and transitions between them could reveal some truly unique and previously unknown phenomena and applications. We have also computed and discussed the density of states for various types of 1T $$^\prime$$ ′ -MoS $$_2$$ 2 materials and its modification in the presence of a dressing field.

Tunable Mid-Infrared Interband Emission from Tensile-Strained InGaAs Quantum Dots

We demonstrate the ability to tailor self-assembled growth of In 0.5 Ga 0.5 As quantum dots (QDs) on GaSb(111)A surfaces by molecular beam epitaxy. Spontaneous formation via the Volmer–Weber growth mode produces QDs with excellent structural and optical quality. By harnessing tensile strain to reduce their band gap energy, these QDs are characterized by light emission that extends into the midwave infrared wavelength range of 3.2–3.9 μm (0.318–0.388 eV). As we increase QD size, we can tune the band alignment from type-III to type-II, where light emission occurs due to interband recombination between quantum confined electrons in the InGaAs QDs and holes in the GaSb barriers. Of particular interest is an unusual blue-shift in emission wavelength with increasing QD size, which we attribute to the incorporation of Sb into the InGaAs QDs from the GaSb barriers. By expanding this approach to produce tensile-strained QDs from other narrow band gap semiconductors, we anticipate the development of a range of highly tunable mid-infrared light sources.

Hybrid Layered Double Perovskite Halides of Transition Metals

Hybrid layered double perovskite (HLDP) halides comprise hexacoordinated 1+ and 3+ metals in the octahedral sites within a perovskite layer and organic amine cations between the layers. Here, progress on such materials has hitherto been limited to compounds containing main group 3+ ions isoelectronic with Pb II (such as Sb III and Bi III ). Furthermore, we report eight HLDP halides from the A 2 M I M III X 8 family, where A = para-phenylenediammonium (PPDA), 1,4-butanediammonium (1,4-BDA), or 1,3-propanediammonium (1,3-PDA); M I = Cu or Ag; M III = Ru or Mo; X = Cl or Br. The optical band gaps, which lie in the range 1.55 to 2.05 eV, are tunable according to the layer composition, but are largely independent of the spacer. Magnetic measurements carried out for (PPDA) 2 Ag I Ru III Cl 8 and (PPDA) 2 Ag I Mo III Cl 8 show no obvious evidence of a magnetic ordering transition. While the t 2g 3 Mo III compound displays Curie–Weiss behavior for a spin-only d 3 ion, the t 2g 5 Ru III compound displays marked deviations from the Kotani theory.

Electronic structures, charge transfer, and charge order in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers

Moiré superlattices of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers have been shown to host correlated electronic states, which arise from the interplay of long wavelength moiré potential and long-range Coulomb interaction. Here, we theoretically investigate structural relaxation and single-particle electronic structure of twisted TMD homobilayer. From the large-scale density functional theory calculation and continuum model with layer degrees of freedom, we find that the out-of-plane gating field creates a tunable charge transfer gap at the Dirac point between the first and second moiré valence bands. We further study the charge orders at the fractional band fillings. In the flat band limit, we find from Monte Carlo simulations a series of charge-ordered insulating states at various fillings $n = \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{2}{3}, 1$. Further, we predict that gating field induces a phase transition between different electron crystals at fixed filling $n = \frac{1}{2}$ or $\frac{2}{3}$. At half-filling $\textit{n} = 1$, the ground state is a Mott insulator with electronically driven ferroelectricity. This work demonstrates that TMD homobilayer provides a powerful platform for the investigation of tunable charge transfer insulator and charge orders.

Photo-Induced Charge Transfer of Fullerene and Non-Fullerene Conjugated Polymer Blends via Ab Initio Excited-State Dynamics

Organic conjugated polymers (CPs) are promising candidates for organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices due to their unique tunable mechanical and optoelectronic performance. Over the last decade, optoelectronic properties of narrow band gap CPs as a blend with acceptor units are largely optimized, which leads to noticeable progress in OPV technology. However, their power conversion efficiency is still lower than their organic counterparts (i.e., silicon), limiting their practical usage. In this study, we employ ab initio molecular dynamics to explore photo-induced charge transfer (CT) of the diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymer as a blend with non-fullerene (i.e., ITIC) and fullerene (i.e., PCBM) acceptor units. The results of charge carrier dynamics induced by selected photoexcitation show that hole density redistribution in space is much faster than electron relaxation. We track the relaxation rates of charge carriers over time, where the derivative of the difference between the rate of electron and hole implies the current density at zero voltage. Furthermore, this can be utilized to characterize the CT performance of CPs blended with different acceptor units. Relaxation rate results indicate that CP blend with ITIC promises a better PV performance, illustrating that the current computational approach opens the door to determine bulk heterojunctions’ electronic performance for OPV devices and narrowing down the list of potential donor–acceptor candidates.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties in semiconducting Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 with Eu-Eu dimers

Magnetic structure and crystal symmetry, which primarily determine the time-reversal and inversion symmetry, may give rise to numerous exotic quantum phenomena in magnetic semiconductors and semimetals when arranged in different patterns. Here, a new layered magnetic semiconductor, Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 , was discovered and high-quality single crystals were grown using the Sn flux. According to structural characterization by x-ray diffraction and atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 is found to crystallize in a hexagonal symmetry with the space group P6 3 /mmc (No. 194). After examining different specimens, we conclude that their stoichiometry is fixed at ~Eu 2.6 Zn 0.65 Sn 0.85 As 3 , which meets the chemical charge balance. Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 is composed of septuple (Eu 1-δ Sn y As 2 )-Eu-(Zn x As)-Eu sequences. The shortest Eu–Eu distance in the system is between two Eu layers separated by Zn x As along the c-axis. Magnetization measurement shows an antiferromagnetic ordering in Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 at T N ~ 12 K, where the magnetic easy-axis is along the c-axis, and Mössbauer spectroscopy observes magnetic hyperfine splitting on Eu and Sn at 6 K. Magnetic anisotropy is significantly different from the ones along the ab-plane in other layered Eu-based magnetic semimetals. Heat capacity measurements confirm the magnetic transition around 12 K. Electrical resistivity measurement indicates semiconductor behavior with a band gap of ~0.86 eV. Finally, various Eu-based magnetic semiconductors could provide a tunable platform to study potential topological and magnetic properties.

Emergence of asymmetric skew-scattering dominated anomalous Nernst effect in the spin gapless semiconductors Co 1+x Fe 1-x CrGa

Heusler alloy-based spin gapless semiconductors (SGSs) with very high Curie temperatures ( T C ) have recently gained enormous attention because of their unconventional electronic structures. They exhibit a nonzero band gap in one of the spin channels and a zero band gap in the other spin channel, making them an important class of materials for tunable spin transport. Here, we report the experimental observation of anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in Co 1 + x Fe 1 - x CrGa ( x = 0 , 0.2, 0.4, and 0.5), which are the emerging quaternary Heusler alloy-based SGSs. While the electron-electron elastic scattering and the disorder-mediated weak localization effect play the major roles in electrical transport for all the samples at low temperatures, the magnon-drag effect was found to dominate the longitudinal thermoelectric transport. The ANE coefficient at room temperature increases from ≈ 0.018 μ V K - 1 for x = 0 to ≈ 0.063 μ V K - 1 for x = 0.5 , which is higher than that for Ni 81 Fe 19 and compressively strained SrRu O 3 films. Our analysis indicates that the observed ANE in these samples originates from asymmetric skew scattering of charge carriers.

Odd- and even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in monolayer WSe 2

Monolayer semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) represent a unique class of two-dimensional (2D) electron systems. Their atomically thin structure facilitates gate tunability just like graphene does, but unlike graphene, TMDs have the advantage of a sizable band gap and strong spin–orbit coupling. Measurements under large magnetic fields have revealed an unusual Landau level (LL) structure, distinct from other 2D electron systems. However, owing to the limited sample quality and poor electrical contact, probing the lowest LLs has been challenging, and observation of electron correlations within the fractionally filled LL regime has not been possible. Here, through bulk electronic compressibility measurements, we investigate the LL structure of monolayer WSe 2 in the extreme quantum limit, and observe fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest three LLs. The odd-denominator fractional quantum Hall sequences demonstrate a systematic evolution with the LL orbital index, consistent with generic theoretical expectations. In addition, we observe an even-denominator state in the second LL that is expected to host non-Abelian statistics. Finally, our results suggest that the 2D semiconductors can provide an experimental platform that closely resembles idealized theoretical models in the quantum Hall regime.

Optical imprinting of superlattices in two-dimensional materials

We propose a novel optical method to imprint superlattice structures in two-dimensional electronic systems. By changing the shape of the optical field, we synthesize various lattice structures with different spatial symmetry, periodicity, and strength. We find that the wide optical tunability allows one to tune different properties of the effective band structure, including Chern number, energy bandwidths, and band gaps. We consider the high-frequency regime where the electronic system can remain in the quasi-equilibrium phase for an extended amount of time. The spatiotemporal reconfigurablity of our approach opens up new possibilities to control light-matter interaction to generate novel electronic states and optoelectronic devices.

Nitrogen p-type doping in polycrystalline zinc selenide telluride films

Nitrogen-doped zinc selenide telluride (N:ZnSe x Te 1−x ) is of interest because it is one of the widest-gap II–VI semiconductors that can still be doped p-type with reasonably high hole concentrations. We sputter deposit N:ZnSe x Te 1−x films, varying Se/(Se + Te), or x, from 0 to 0.7, N 2 flow rate from 0.25 to 0.75 sccm, and substrate temperature from 250 to 370 °C. Increasing x from 0 to 0.39 at the optimal temperature of 370 °C and N 2 flow rate of 0.5 sccm leads to 1.3 atomic % nitrogen incorporation and wurtzite phase stabilization. Such doping and alloying increases hole concentration from 3 × 10 18 cm −3 to 3 × 10 19 cm −3 , although mobility drops from 0.4 to 0.02 cm 2 V −1 s −1 . Our sputtered N:ZnSe 0.38 Te 0.62 has an absorption onset 0.1 eV greater than the ZnTe value of 1.87 eV. Increasing x from 0 to 0.51 enhances transmittance by moving absorption onset from 1.87 to 2.11 eV with diminished band gap bowing likely due to disorder, and increases the work function from 5.12 to 5.42 eV. This combination of tunable properties makes sputtered N:ZnSe x Te 1−x desirable for transparent p-type contacts in polycrystalline Cd(Se,Te) optoelectronic devices.

Tuning Intermediate Bands of Protective Coatings to Reach the Bulk-Recombination Limit of Stable Water-Oxidation GaP Photoanodes

Stable photoelectrochemical solar fuel production requires protective coatings to achieve effective charge separation, transport, and injection at the semiconductor–liquid interfaces, implying that the coating should energetically align its intermediate band (IB) with both the photoabsorber's band edge and co-catalyst's potentials. Yet approaches to adjust coating IB positions to accommodate various semiconductor light absorbers for constructing efficient and stable photoelectrodes have not been developed. In this report, three types of transition metal (M = Mn 2+ , Mn 3+ , and Cr 3+ ions) alloyed TiO2 coatings are discovered using atomic layer deposition (ALD). The IB energetics of these coatings are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and are found to be tunable inside the TiO 2 bandgap, through varying ALD growth conditions. By applying these coatings to n-type GaP and integrating with IrO x co-catalysts, the water-oxidation J–E performance is comparable to an uncoated corroding GaP photoanode. It reaches the bulk recombination limit of the GaP and achieves ≈28% absorbed photon to current efficiency under 475-nm light excitation (6.48 mW cm -2 ) and 100-h stable water oxidation. The outstanding performance and stability are attributed to the efficient charge separation and hole transport, as allowed by the energy alignment of the coating IB and the GaP valence band edge.

Inorganic Halide Double Perovskites with Optoelectronic Properties Modulated by Sublattice Mixing

All-inorganic halide double perovskites have emerged as a promising class of materials that are potentially more stable and less toxic than lead-containing hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite optoelectronic materials. In this work, 311 cesium chloride double perovskites (Cs 2 BB'Cl 6 ) were selected from a set of 903 compounds as likely being stable on the basis of a statistically learned tolerance factor (t) for perovskite stability. First-principles calculations on these 311 double perovskites were then performed to assess their stability and identify candidates with band gaps appropriate for optoelectronic applications. We predict that 261 of the 311 Cs 2 BB'Cl 6 compounds are likely synthesizable on the basis of a thermodynamic analysis of their decomposition to competing compounds (decomposition enthalpy <0.05 eV/atom). Of these 261 likely synthesizable compounds, 47 contain no toxic elements and have direct or nearly direct (within 100 meV) band gaps between 1 and 3 eV, as computed with hybrid density functional theory (HSE06). Within this set, we identify the triple-alkali perovskites Cs 2 [Alk] + [TM] 3+ Cl 6 , where Alk is a group 1 alkali cation and TM is a transition-metal cation, as a class of Cs 2 BB'Cl 6 double perovskites with remarkable optical properties, including large and tunable exciton binding energies as computed by the GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) method. We attribute the unusual electronic structure of these compounds to the mixing of the Alk-Cl and TM-Cl sublattices, leading to materials with small band gaps, large exciton binding energies, and absorption spectra that are strongly influenced by the identity of the transition metal. The role of the double-perovskite structure in enabling these unique properties is probed through an analysis of the electronic structures and chemical bonding of these compounds in comparison with other transition-metal and alkali transition-metal halides.

Quantum octets in high mobility pentagonal two-dimensional PdSe 2

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have drawn immense interests in scientific and technological communities, owing to their extraordinary properties and their tunability by gating, proximity, strain and external fields. For electronic applications, an ideal 2D material would have high mobility, air stability, sizable band gap, and be compatible with large scale synthesis. Here we demonstrate air stable field effect transistors using atomically thin few-layer PdSe 2 sheets that are sandwiched between hexagonal BN (hBN), with large saturation current > 350 μA/μm, and high field effect mobilities of ~ 700 and 10,000 cm 2 /Vs at 300 K and 2 K, respectively. At low temperatures, magnetotransport studies reveal unique octets in quantum oscillations that persist at all densities, arising from 2-fold spin and 4-fold valley degeneracies, which can be broken by in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields toward quantum Hall spin and orbital ferromagnetism.

The Crystal Structure of BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 Featuring Brownmillerite‐Type Layers

Abstract A bimetallic hydroxychalcogenide, BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 , was synthesized through hydrothermal pouch methods. The single crystal X‐ray diffraction and electron diffraction indicates that the phase crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma and is composed of anionic layers [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] − that are separated and charged balanced by Ba 2+ cations. The [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] – layer comprises two unique Zn sites, which form interpenetrating zigzag chains with an in‐plane dipole moment and adopts a brownmillerite‐type structural motif. The adjacent layers contain tetrahedrally coordinated Zn chains of opposite handedness related by an inversion center, which cancel the microscopic dipoles to minimize the macroscopic electric polarization. The adoption of a brownmillerite structural motif in BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 can be rationalized by the distinct charge difference between Se 2− and OH − anions, which creates a sufficient dipole moment in the ZnSe 3 (OH) tetrahedra to allow the occurrence of twisted chains. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the existence of OH − anions and DFT calculations indicate that BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap. This work expands the chemistry of the brownmillerite family from traditional homoanionic oxides to multianion hydroxychalcogenides, offering a new opportunity to explore tunable structural complexity for better design of functional materials.
