Accurate Quartic Force Fields and Vibrational Frequencies for HCN and HNC

The quartic force fields of HCN and HNC are determined using atomic natural orbital one-particle basis sets of spdf/spd and spdfg/spdf quality in conjunction with the CCSD(T) electron correlation method (singles and doubles coupled-cluster theory plus a perturbation estimate of the effects of connected triple excitations). The HCN force field is in good agreement with a recent experimentally derived force field and also with the force field recently computed by Wong and Bacskay. On the basis of the good agreement obtained for HCN, it is argued that the ab initio quartic force field for HNC is superior to a prior force field derived from experiment. The harmonic frequencies of HNC are predicted to be 3822 +/- 10, 472 +/- 5, and 2051 +/- 10 cm(exp -1) for omega(sub 1), omega(sub 2), and omega(sub 3), respectively; the experimentally derived values are above these values and fall outside the estimated uncertainties. Using the quartic force field, spectroscopic constants are predicted for HNC based on a vibrational second-order perturbation theory analysis. It is also asserted that the gas-phase fundamental nu(sub 3) for HNC is slightly lower than the matrix isolation value. The range of validity of the quartic force fields is investigated by comparison of variational vibrational energies computed with the quartic force fields to those obtained from our recently reported global HCN/HNC potential energy surface and also to experimental data.

Properties of axial or torsional free-vibration frequency of rods

The investigation reported shows that for a clamped rod with an odd number of degrees of freedom, the middle frequency is independent of any nonuniformity in the area distribution. The frequencies in the lower half of the spectrum of a rod are found to be conjugate to the frequencies in the upper half. In the case of a design modification which leaves a certain frequency in the lower half spectrum unchanged, the conjugate frequency in the upper half will also remain unchanged.

Vibration frequencies of tapered bars with nonclassical boundary conditions

The goals for this research were revised and clarified. The goals are restated along with an evaluation of the accomplishment of the goal. All of the cases of the truncated-cone beams that were originally proposed to be solved were solved. A summary of these solutions is presented. Some cases of beams with unequal tapers were solved and are discussed.

Modal survey tests for high-frequency vibration analysis of the Space Shuttle Main Engine

Variations in the modal characteristics of different Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSMEs) are presented herein to study their structural dynamics vibrations, especially under fluid/structure interaction. The results of extensive modal survey tests and analysis relative to significant features in the modal characteristics of different powerheads and components are discussed.

Low frequency vibration isolation technology for microgravity space experiments

The dynamic acceleration environment observed on Space Shuttle flights to date and predicted for the Space Station has complicated the analysis of prior microgravity experiments and prompted concern for the viability of proposed space experiments requiring long-term, low-g environments. Isolation systems capable of providing significant improvements in this environment exist, but have not been demonstrated in flight configurations. This paper presents a summary of the theoretical evaluation for two one degree-of-freedom (DOF) active magnetic isolators and their predicted response to both direct and base excitations, that can be used to isolate acceleration sensitive microgravity space experiments.

Ordering of the O-O stretching vibrational frequencies in ozone

The ordering of nu1 and nu3 for O3 is incorrectly predicted by most theoretical methods, including some very high level methods. The first systematic electron correlation method based on one-reference configuration to solve this problem is the coupled cluster single and double excitation method. However, a relatively large basis set, triple zeta plus double polarization is required. Comparison with other theoretical methods is made.
