NEUWAVE-12 at ESS: Workshop Series on Wavelength Dependent Neutron Imaging Back in Full Swing

The NEUWAVE workshop series, a cornerstone for advancements in energy- or wavelength-resolved neutron imaging, held its 12th meeting at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund from September 1 to 5, 2024. The participants can be seen in Figure 1 during the site visit. The series focuses on developments in techniques using phenomena such as Bragg-edges, incoherent and inelastic scattering, or neutron absorption resonances as contrast mechanisms and is therefore far more specialized than more general conferences for neutron imaging such as the WCNR or ITMNR series [Citation1]. After a break during the pandemic and record attendance at NEUWAVE-11 in Tokyo in 2023, which underscored the immense interest in wavelength dependent neutron imaging, NEUWAVE returned to its roots with a focus on a smaller group of specialists meeting in a workshop format, allowing for in-depth discussions and the exchange of new ideas.

Special Issue on the 22nd International Spherical Torus Workshop, 21–24 October 2024

This Special Issue contains papers resulting from research presented at the 22nd International Spherical Torus Workshop (ISTW), which was held during 21–24 October 2024, in Oxford, UK. The objectives of this workshop were to contribute to advancing the understanding of spherical tori (ST) configurations and to enhance their potential for fusion power applications. The scope of the meeting covers the full range of research activities on STs and aims to provide a forum for discussion and collaboration enhancement. The ISTW is organized by the International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Programme on ST [1], and the 22nd was the latest in a series that started in 1994, but due to the global pandemic it had not been held in person for 5 years. With 15 thirty-minute overview presentations, 33 twenty-minute presentations, 32 posters and 93 total attendees, the 22nd ISTW was, to our knowledge, the largest to date. Representatives attended from at least 9 countries, representing at least 24 institutions, and presenting results from at least 18 existing or planned devices. Furthermore, this demonstrates the current broad interest in STs as fusion research devices and as candidates for future fusion pilot plants. Following on this momentum, the 23rd ISTW is planned to be held in Seville, Spain in late 2026.

The role of emerging scientists in restoration ecology: insights from a SER2023 conference workshop

Emerging professionals are crucial in advancing ecological restoration by connecting newcomers with established leaders and blending new ideas with traditional practices. This paper highlights the vital role emerging scientists play in restoration ecology and the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER). A survey conducted during the SER2023 conference workshop, organized by the Students and Emerging Professionals committee, showed that emerging professionals contribute significantly to every stage of scientific work, from planning to publication. However, participants emphasized the scarcity of funding opportunities for non‐senior scientists, which limits academic growth. The workshop underscored the importance of nurturing emerging professionals to develop future leaders for SER and ensure continuity. Fostering non‐hierarchical and inclusive networking is key to engaging and empowering these professionals, ultimately contributing to the long‐term success of ecological restoration efforts.

Biomimicry in Clean Energy Futures: Workshop Report

On July 25, 2023, PNNL hosted a workshop to explore the potential for biomimicry – looking to nature and biology for solutions to human engineering challenges – to support clean energy futures and associated research. Participants represented a range of technical expertise ranging from ecological modeling to cyber-security. Workshop supporting material featured a literature review of biomimetic approaches in all renewable energy technologies and inspired from all kingdoms of life. Participants noted clear contrasts between natural design strategies and clean energy deployment and the electric grid. They also agreed that biomimicry offered a rich area of research potential but lacked definitive benefits or results in commercialization phases.

2025 Workshop on Envisioning Frontiers in AI and Computing for Biological Research: Position Papers

This workshop aims to identify key research directions for transforming biology using artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and computational methods to facilitate the discovery of new behaviors, mechanisms, and designs of biological processes relevant to DOE missions, underpinning a broader U.S. bioeconomy. By developing novel AI/ML technologies to analyze and interpret complex biological data, researchers can organize and simulate biological processes at various scales as well as advance predictive understanding and manipulation of biological systems. This integration of computation, experimentation, and next-generation experimental technologies can lead to discoveries in new biological behaviors and mechanisms relevant to DOE missions. The focus is on how advanced computational and mathematical methods can impact this mission by exploring digital twins, foundation models, automated laboratory experiments, modeling of complex living systems, and data-driven approaches for the biodesign of plants and microbial systems. While data management is important, it is not the primary focus of this workshop, which will assess the current state, trends, and AI/ML challenges at the interface between biology and computational science to identify opportunities for high-impact research at their intersection. The goal is to define research needs and opportunities that align with biological sciences, computational sciences, and applied mathematics research.

IROS 2023 Workshop Report: Draft Guidelines on Manufacturing Procedures, Test Methods and Reporting for Soft Robotics

Soft roboticists are facing challenges with reproducibility, which prevents researchers from making holistic comparisons to prior work, impedes full understanding of results, and forces the need to “reinvent the wheel,” delaying fundamental advances. Reproducibility of results is key to advancing science as well as achieving technology transfer from research laboratories to industrial applications. Recently, a discussion-based workshop dedicated to the topic, “Developing Standard Testing and Reporting Guidelines for Soft Robotics,” was held at IROS 2023 in Detroit, MI. The purpose of this document is to record a set of recommendations and voluntary draft guidelines for soft roboticists concerning fabrication/manufacturing, test procedures, and reporting, which were collectively developed at the workshop. Together as a community, we hope to improve the reporting standards of soft robotics and drive the field as a whole toward more rigorous research practices.
