Local Structure of Glassy Lithium Phosphorus Oxynitride Thin Films: A Combined Experimental and Ab Initio Approach

Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is an amorphous solid–state lithium ion conductor displaying exemplary cyclability against lithium metal anodes. There is no definitive explanation for this stability due to the limited understanding of the structure of LiPON. Herein, we provide a structural model of RF–sputtered LiPON. Information about the short–range structure results from 1D and 2D solid–state NMR experiments. These results are compared with first principles chemical shielding calculations of Li–P–O/N crystals and ab initio molecular dynamics–generated amorphous LiPON models to unequivocally identify the glassy structure as primarily isolated phosphate monomers with N incorporated in both apical and as bridging sites in phosphate dimers. Structural results suggest LiPON's stability is a result of its glassy character. In conclusion, free–standing LiPON films are produced that exhibit a high degree of flexibility, highlighting the unique mechanical properties of glassy materials.

Upgrading the Performance and Stability of Lithium, Manganese-Rich Layered Oxide Cathodes with Combined-Formic Acid and Spinel Coating Treatment

We report improving sluggish rate performance and cycling stability of Li, Mn-rich cathode materials (LMR) is of great importance for practical implementation. Here, dual surface modification on LMR particles with formic acid washing and spinel coating improves the electrochemical performance. Dilute formic acid can remove the Li2CO3 surface impurities and selectively reduce Ni while significantly increasing specific surface area by ~32 %, unlocking more electrochemically active surfaces. Spinel coating enhances cycle stability by suppressing detrimental side reactions at electrode-electrolyte interfaces at high voltage. Post-annealing temperature was found to significantly affect the cathode performance. Higher temperature favors diffusion of transition metal (TM)/Li ions of the spinel coating from surface to the bulk, removing the coating by possible reconstruction into the layered structure and thus degrading the performance. The spinel coating also appears to increase Co 3+ segregation on the particle surface. Compared to the original material, the optimized sample demonstrates 47 % higher capacity retention at 3C and retains 89 % of initial capacity after 150 cycles at 0.5C. Besides, the specific energy density of 523 Wh kg -1 can be attained after 150 cycles at 0.5C. Moreover, the post-cycling analysis of modified sample verifies a better structural integrity with less particle cracking. Altogether, this study portrays an alternative strategy to overcome the shortcomings of LMR cathode materials.

Combining the Best of Two Chelating Titans: A Hydroxypyridinone-Decorated Macrocyclic Ligand for Efficient and Concomitant Complexation and Sensitized Luminescence of f-Elements

An ideal chelator for f-elements features rapid kinetics of complexation, high thermodynamic stability, and slow kinetics of dissociation. Here we present the facile synthesis of a macrocyclic ligand bearing four 1-hydroxy-2-pyridinone units linked to a cyclen scaffold that rapidly forms thermodynamically stable complexes with lanthanides (Sm 3+ , Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Dy 3+ ) and a representative late actinide (Cm 3+ ) in aqueous media and concurrently sensitizes them. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy revealed an increase in the Ln/An-O bond lengths following the trend Cm>Eu>Tb and EXAFS data were compatible with time-resolved luminescence studies, which indicated one to two water molecules in the inner metal coordination sphere of Eu(III) and two water molecules for the Cm(III) complex. Spectrofluorimetric ligand competition titrations against DTPA confirmed the high thermodynamic stability of DOTHOPO complexes, with pM values between 19.9(1) and 21.9(2).

Combining Chemistry, Material Science, Inspiration from nature, and Serendipity to Develop Stimuli-responsive Polymeric Materials

Neither of us can remember people talking about stimuli-responsive polymers when we were students. Even though this was still in the last century, it was almost 70 years after Staudinger's seminal paper "uber Polymerisation"![1] By the time we entered graduate school in the early 1990 s, the first papers on polymer light emitting diodes appeared, while research on electrically conducting, nonlinear optical, and other "functional" polymers was already in full swing. Looking back, there were some stimuli-responsive materials that were around at the time, but it took the better part of the last 30 years until the field had developed into what we think is one of the most vibrant areas of polymer science. Before the potential usefulness of this class of materials was recognized, researchers were focused on developing polymeric materials that would not respond to external influences, and in fact maintain (in particular) their mechanical properties in a wide range of environments. This has led to the development of many environmentally robust polymers, which have come to impact basically every aspect of our daily life. Ironically, this long-sought stability now comes back to haunt us in the form of plastic pollution, but this is another story. The concept of materials that adapt their properties in response to changing environmental conditions might appear like a complete reversal with respect to the original goals of creating stable materials. However, eventually a) it was recognized that materials that respond to a specific stimulus in a predictable and useful manner would significantly broaden the potential usefulness of polymers, and b) the field of polymer science had developed to the point where the rational design, preparation, and characterization of such materials became possible. The expression 'stimuli-responsive polymer' had been first used in the 1980's, however its use really only gained popularity a few decades later. In the early days, terms such as environmentally-sensitive or environmentally-responsive polymers, stimuli-reversible or stimuli-sensitive polymers, or polymers with phase transitions have also been used.

MCML: Combining physical constraints with experimental data for a multi-purpose meta-generalized gradient approximation

The predictive power of density functional theory for materials properties can be improved without increasing the overall computational complexity by extending the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for electronic exchange and correlation to density functionals depending on the electronic kinetic energy density in addition to the charge density and its gradient, resulting in a meta-GGA. Here, we propose an empirical meta-GGA model that is based both on physical constraints and on experimental and quantum chemistry reference data. Overall, the resulting optimized meta-GGA MCML yields improved surface and gas phase reaction energetics without sacrificing the accuracy of bulk property predictions of existing meta-GGA approaches.

Comparing π‐complexation capabilities of ionic liquids containing silver(I) and copper(I) ions by headspace single drop microextraction in combination with high‐performance liquid chromatography

Selective π‐complexation capabilities of silver(I) and copper(I) ions can be effectively facilitated in ionic liquids. To understand the effects of environmental factors that influence the π‐complexation of these metal ions with analytes, techniques that employ small volumes of ionic liquid that can be readily analyzed are desired. In this study, headspace single drop microextraction coupled with HPLC is used to investigate a diverse set of environmental factors on the metal ion‐mediated complexation with aromatic compounds in ionic liquid media. Silver(I) and copper(I) bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide salts were both studied by dissolving them in the 1‐decyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ionic liquid and employing the mixture as extraction media for aromatic compounds. Water and acetonitrile within the sample solution were observed to interfere with the complexation of silver(I) ions and aromatic compounds, while ethylene glycol and triethylene glycol did not. The temperature and extraction times were optimized to fully facilitate the π‐complexation capabilities of metal ions in ionic liquid media. Partition coefficients between the sample headspace and metal ion were determined using a three‐phase equilibria model. Although no discernable difference in analyte partitioning between the headspace and ionic liquid solvent was observed, analyte partition coefficients to silver(I) ion tended to be greater compared to copper(I) ion.

Vibrational Spectra of HNIW and its Isotopologues: A Combined Experimental and Computational Study

Incorporating isotopically labelled materials in degradation experiments could help unravel the mechanism(s) of decomposition through use of the kinetic isotope effect. Characterizing synthesized isotopologues however requires an understanding of what observable signals are affected by the isotopic substitution. As vibrational spectroscopy can distinguish between isotopologues, it is an ideal characterization technique to evaluate isotopic variants. To this end, the vibrational spectra of HNIW and its deuterated ( 2 H), 13 C, 15 N (all), 15 N (nitro), and 18 O isotopologues have been computationally predicted in the gas phase using density functional theory. These results are compared to experimentally measured FTIR/ATR and Raman spectra of both unsubstituted HNIW and 15 N-labeled HNIW in which the six nitro groups were synthetically tagged with 15 N atoms ( 15 N nitro -HNIW). The experimental isotopic frequency shift for the -NO 2 asymmetric stretching frequencies agrees with that theoretically calculated (~35.7 cm-1 vs. 36.5cm-1, respectively). Furthermore, analysis of the theoretically predicted frequency shifts for all isotopologues suggest the -NO 2 bending modes are lower in frequency than previously reported. This assignment is supported by the experimentally measured isotopic shift of ~10.1 cm -1 for these features (consistent with the predicted shift of ~13.1 cm -1 ). This work expands our current understanding of the vibrational modes in HNIW as well as provides a method for future work on similar systems.

Combination of deep neural network with attention mechanism enhances the explainability of protein contact prediction

Abstract Deep learning has emerged as a revolutionary technology for protein residue‐residue contact prediction since the 2012 CASP10 competition. Considerable advancements in the predictive power of the deep learning‐based contact predictions have been achieved since then. However, little effort has been put into interpreting the black‐box deep learning methods. Algorithms that can interpret the relationship between predicted contact maps and the internal mechanism of the deep learning architectures are needed to explore the essential components of contact inference and improve their explainability. In this study, we present an attention‐based convolutional neural network for protein contact prediction, which consists of two attention mechanism‐based modules: sequence attention and regional attention. Our benchmark results on the CASP13 free‐modeling targets demonstrate that the two attention modules added on top of existing typical deep learning models exhibit a complementary effect that contributes to prediction improvements. More importantly, the inclusion of the attention mechanism provides interpretable patterns that contain useful insights into the key fold‐determining residues in proteins. We expect the attention‐based model can provide a reliable and practically interpretable technique that helps break the current bottlenecks in explaining deep neural networks for contact prediction. Measurements of inclusive and differential cross-sections of combined $ t\overline{t}\gamma$ and tWγ production in the eμ channel at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Inclusive and differential cross-sections for the production of top quarks in association with a photon are measured with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb - 1 . The data were collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during Run 2 between 2015 and 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measurements are performed in a fiducial volume defined at parton level. Events with exactly one photon, one electron and one muon of opposite sign, and at least two jets, of which at least one is b -tagged, are selected. The fiducial cross-section is measured to be $ {39.6}_{-2.3}^{+2.7} $ fb. Differential cross-sections as functions of several observables are compared with state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations and next-to-leading-order theoretical calculations. These include cross-sections as functions of photon kinematic variables, angular variables related to the photon and the leptons, and angular separations between the two leptons in the event. All measurements are in agreement with the predictions from the Standard Model.

Combining Simulation and Optimization to Derive Operating Policies for a Concentrating Solar Power Plant

Optimizing short-term decisions over a rolling horizon and/or using deterministic penalties to capture system stochasticity can lead to myopic policies that fail to consider unplanned events and their long-term adverse effects. We present a methodology that integrates an off-line optimization model with a simulation procedure to determine the profitability of different operating strategies; specifically, the latter is used to generate additional constraints for the former when failures occur according to system component operating lifetimes that (i) are subject to exogenous uncertainty, and (ii) may degrade more quickly under specific operating conditions. We use the feedback provided by the simulation model in a parametric analysis to obtain penalties that can be used in short-term operations scheduling to maximize the long-term revenues obtained by the optimization model. We apply this research to a concentrating solar power plant; our results show that the methodology can be used to choose an operating policy that balances maximizing profit while accounting for maintenance costs. Integrating the optimization model with a simulation procedure reveals that aggressive prices for cycling yield about 55% fewer startups and 30% fewer failures compared to using a more typical start-up operating strategy, and can save hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars in repair costs over the lifetime of the plant.

Mechanical behavior of polyamide-6 after combined photo-oxidative and hygrothermal aging

The effect of moisture on the photo-oxidative degradation of polyamide-6 (PA-6) was studied by analyzing the mechanical response after two different accelerated aging procedures. In the first aging procedure, the PA-6 was only exposed to ultra-violet (UV) radiation at 60 °C. In the second procedure, the same duration of UV radiation was periodically interrupted while the relative humidity was raised to 100%. Diffusion-limited and nominally homogeneous degradation conditions were investigated using bulk and film specimens, respectively. Accelerated UV aging reduced the ductility of PA-6, but the additional hygrothermal exposure had no effect on the ductility or strength, indicating that humidity did not influence the photo-oxidation of PA-6. In conclusion, this finding contrasts with previous studies that found thermo-oxidation of PA-6 was accelerated by moisture.
