Prospects for strong coupling measurement at hadron colliders using soft-drop jet mass

We compute the soft-drop jet-mass distribution from pp collisions to NNLL accuracy while including nonperturbative corrections through a field-theory based formalism. Using these calculations, we assess the theoretical uncertainties on an αs precision measurement due to higher order perturbative effects, nonperturbative corrections, and PDF uncertainty. We identify which soft-drop parameters are well-suited for measuring αs, and find that higher-logarithmic resummation has a qualitatively important effect on the shape of the jet-mass distribution. We find that quark jets and gluon jets have similar sensitivity to αs, and emphasize that experimentally distinguishing quark and gluon jets is not required for an αs measurement. We conclude that measuring αs to the 10% level is feasible now, and with improvements in theory a 5% level measurement is possible. Getting down to the 1% level to be competitive with other state-of-the-art measurements will be challenging.

Higgs and Z assisted stop searches at hadron colliders

Current searches for the light top squark (stop) mostly focus on the decay channels of \( \tilde{t}\to t{\chi}_1^0 \) or \( \tilde{t}\to b{\chi}_1^{\pm}\to bW{\chi}_1^0 \) , leading to Open image in new window final states for stop pair productions at the LHC. However, in supersymmetric scenarios with light neutralinos and charginos other than the neutralino lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), more than one decay mode of the stop could be dominant. While those new decay modes could significantly weaken the current stop search limits at the LHC, they also offer alternative discovery channels for stop searches. In this paper, we studied the scenario with light Higgsino next-to-LSPs (NLSPs) and Bino LSP. The light stop decays primarily via \( {\tilde{t}}_1\to t{\chi}_2^0/{\chi}_3^0 \) , with the neutralinos subsequent decaying to a Z boson or a Higgs boson: χ 2° /χ 3 ° → χ 1 ° h/Z. Pair production of light stops at the LHC leads to final states of Open image in new window or Open image in new window . We consider three signal regions: one charged lepton (1ℓ), two opposite sign charged leptons (2 OS ℓ) and at least three charged leptons (≥3ℓ). We found that the 1ℓ signal region of channel Open image in new window has the best reach sensitivity for light stop searches. For 14 TeV LHC with 300 fb -1 integrated luminosity, a stop mass up to 900 GeV can be discovered at 5σ significance, or up to 1050 GeV can be excluded at 95% C.L. Combining all three decay channels for 1ℓ signal region extends the reach for about 100–150 GeV. We also studied the stop reach at the 100 TeV pp collider with 3 ab -1 luminosity, with discovery and exclusion reach being 6 TeV and 7 TeV, respectively.

Higher harmonic non-linear flow modes of charged hadrons in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Anisotropic flow coefficients, v n , non-linear flow mode coefficients, χ n,mk , and correlations among different symmetry planes, ρ n,mk are measured in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Results obtained with multi-particle correlations are reported for the transverse momentum interval 0.2 < p T < 5.0 GeV/c within the pseudorapidity interval 0.4 < |η| < 0.8 as a function of collision centrality. The v n coefficients and χ n,mk and ρ n,mk are presented up to the ninth and seventh harmonic order, respectively. Calculations suggest that the correlations measured in different symmetry planes and the non-linear flow mode coefficients are dependent on the shear and bulk viscosity to entropy ratios of the medium created in heavy-ion collisions. The comparison between these measurements and those at lower energies and calculations from hydrodynamic models places strong constraints on the initial conditions and transport properties of the system.

Exotic Higgs decays in Type-II 2HDMs at the LHC and future 100 TeV hadron colliders

The exotic decay modes of non-Standard Model (SM) Higgses in models with extended Higgs sectors have the potential to serve as powerful search channels to explore the space of Two-Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs). Once kinematically allowed, heavy Higgses could decay into pairs of light non-SM Higgses, or a non-SM Higgs and a SM gauge boson, with branching fractions that quickly dominate those of the conventional decay modes to SM particles. In this study, we focus on the prospects of probing Type-II 2HDMs at the LHC and a future 100 TeV pp collider via exotic decay channels. We study the three prominent exotic decay channels: A → HZ, A → H ± W ∓ and H ± → HW ± , and find that a 100-TeV pp collider can probe most of the region of the Type-II 2HDM parameter space that survives current theoretical and experimental constraints with sizable exotic decay branching fraction through these channels, making them complementary to the conventional decay channels for heavy non-SM Higgses.

Disorder and mimesis at hadron colliders

We discuss how systems with a large number of degrees of freedom and disorder in their mass matrix can play a role in particle physics. We derive results on their mass spectra using, where applicable, QFT techniques. We study concrete realizations of these scenarios in the context of the LHC and HL-LHC, showing that collider events with a large number of soft b-quark jets can be common. Such final states can hide these models from current searches at the LHC. This motivates the ongoing effort aimed at lowering trigger thresholds and expanding data scouting.

Portraying double Higgs at the Large Hadron Collider

We examine the discovery potential for double Higgs production at the high luminosity LHC in the final state with two b-tagged jets, two leptons and missing transverse momentum. Although this dilepton final state has been considered a difficult channel due to the large backgrounds, we argue that it is possible to obtain sizable signal significance, by adopting a deep learning framework making full use of the relevant kinematics along with the jet images from the Higgs decay. For the relevant number of signal events we obtain a substantial increase in signal sensitivity over existing analyses. We discuss relative improvements at each stage and the correlations among the different input variables for the neutral network. The proposed method can be easily generalized to the semi-leptonic channel of double Higgs production, as well as to other processes with similar final states.

Transverse momentum distributions of heavy hadrons and polarized heavy quarks

We initiate the study of transverse momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions for heavy quarks, demonstrate their factorization in terms of novel nonperturbative matrix elements in heavy-quark effective theory (HQET), and prove new TMD sum rules that arise from heavy-quark spin symmetry. We discuss the phenomenology of heavy-quark TMD FFs at B factories and find that the Collins effect, in contrast to claims in the literature, is not parametrically suppressed by the heavy-quark mass. We further calculate all TMD parton distribution functions for the production of heavy quarks from polarized gluons within the nucleon and use our results to demonstrate the potential of the future EIC to resolve TMD heavy-quark fragmentation in semi-inclusive DIS, complementing the planned EIC program to use heavy quarks as probes of gluon distributions.

Resummation of boson-jet correlation at hadron colliders

We perform a precise calculation of the transverse momentum (${\rightarrow}\atop{q}$ T ) distribution of the boson+jet system in boson production events. The boson can be either a photon, W, Z or Higgs boson with mass mV , and ${\rightarrow}\atop{q}$ T is the sum of the transverse momenta of the boson and the leading jet with magnitude q T = |${\rightarrow}\atop{q}$ T |. Using renormalization group techniques and soft-collinear effective theory, we resum logarithms log(Q/q T ) and log R at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy including the non-global logarithms, where Q and R are respectively the hard scattering energy and the radius of the jet. Specifically, we investigate two scenarios of p$J\atop{T}$ ≲ mV or p$J\atop{T}$ ≳ m V in Z+jet events, and we examine the qT distributions with different jet radii and study the effect of non-global logarithms. In the end we compare our theoretical calculations with Monte Carlo simulations and data from the LHC.

Geant4 simulations of sampling and homogeneous hadronic calorimeters with dual readout for future colliders

Calorimeters with dual readout measure both scintillation and Cherenkov light produced in their active media. They offer improvements in energy resolution and, therefore, have become increasingly interesting due to the need for precision jet measurements at Higgs factories. Furthermore, this paper presents GEANT4 simulations of single-particle responses in sampling and homogeneous calorimeters, and demonstrates the effect of inclusion of Cherenkov light in the reconstruction of energies.

On the use of a running coupling in the calculation of forward hadron production at next-to-leading order

We study a puzzle raised recently regarding the running coupling prescription used in the calculation of forward particle production in proton-nucleus collisions at next-to-leading order: using a coordinate space prescription which is consis-tent with the one used in the high energy evolution of the target leads to results which can be two orders of magnitude larger than the ones obtained with a momentum space prescription. We show that this is an artefact of the Fourier trans-form involved when passing between coordinate and momentum space and propose a new coordinate space prescription which avoids this problem.

Probing Early-Time Dynamics and Quark-Gluon Plasma Transport Properties with Photons and Hadrons

In this work, we use a hybrid model which relies on QCD effective kinetic theory - KøMPøST - to dynamically bridge the gap between IP-Glasma initial states and viscous hydrodynamics, for the theoretical interpretation of heavy-ion collision results. The hydrodynamic phase is then followed by dynamical freeze-out handled by UrQMD. It is observed that the new pre-equilibrium/pre-hydro phase does influence the extraction of transport coefficients. We also show how the early dynamics is reflected in photon observables.
