Cooperative workgroup scheduling and context prefetching based on predicted modification of signal values

A first workgroup is preempted in response to threads in the first workgroup executing a first wait instruction including a first value of a signal and a first hint indicating a type of modification for the signal. The first workgroup is scheduled for execution on a processor core based on a first context after preemption in response to the signal having the first value. A second workgroup is scheduled for execution on the processor core based on a second context in response to preempting the first workgroup and in response to the signal having a second value. A third context it is prefetched into registers of the processor core based on the first hint and the second value. The first context is stored in a first portion of the registers and the second context is prefetched into a second portion of the registers prior to preempting the first workgroup.

Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Post-Synthetic Modifications

Chalcogenides are the cornerstone of the semiconductor and thermoelectric industries and are up-and-coming materials for superconductors, catalysis, and battery applications. Challenges in synthesizing those materials emerge from the chalcogen's volatility and the tendencies of chalcogenides to react with even trace quantities of oxygen. Many techniques have been applied to the growth of chalcogenide single crystals, which are convenient for structure determinations and intrinsic property measurements. One of the recent advances in chalcogenide chemistry is the intriguing single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation, leading to new metastable compositions. Post-synthetic transformations are well-known and studied for chalcogenide powders; however, examples of post-synthetic conversions that retain single crystallinity are rare. To date, the scope of SCSC reactions includes (de)intercalation in the layered compositions and ion exchange in open-framework materials, salt-inclusion chalcogenides, and layered structures. This poster will discuss the successful examples of SCSC modifications monitored by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), emphasizing how post-synthetic transformations affect materials' properties.

Localized Flow Modification to Increase Power Capture of a Small-Scale Floating Undershot Waterwheel

The goal of the work described in this thesis is to design a flow augmentation device to increase the power capture and efficiency of a small-scale floating Under-Shot Water Wheel (USWW) currently being developed by Florida Atlantic University research funded by the U.S Department of Energy. The flow concentrator subsystem is intended to maximize the kinetic energy extracted by the marine hydrokinetic (MHK) energy collection device through modification of the local flow field across the capture plane. The primary objective is to increase the velocity and/or rate of mass inflow through the turbine through inserting a streamlined body in the region of interest. By utilizing the resulting flow field to increase hydraulic forcing on the waterwheel blades, the torque and/or RPM of the USWW can be increased. Based on experimental testing in the FAU wave tank at 1:5 prototype scale (280 mm wheel diameter) the flow concentrator was shown to produce an increase in device power coefficient of 17-55% measured over a velocity range of 0.16-0.45 m/s.

Enhanced Carbon Capture Behavior of Carbon Fibers via Ionic Liquid Modification

Carbon-based materials are widely deployed in carbon capture but are only limited to physisorption procedures. Further extending functionalized carbon materials to CO 2 chemisorption under low CO 2 concentration is highly desirable yet challenging. In this study, a carbon fiber composed of solely ultra-micropores (~0.45 nm) was deployed as the precursor to avoid the pore blocking effect, which was modified by superbase-derived ionic liquids (ILs) containing strong interaction sites with CO 2 . By forming a thin coating layer on the surface, the as-afforded surface-functionalized fiber materials demonstrated enhanced CO 2 uptake capacity and improved CO 2 sorption kinetics, as evaluated by both the volumetric method and thermogravimetric analysis, as well as the calculated energy distribution curves. The achievements made in this work provide guidance on the functionalization of carbon-based materials towards enhanced CO 2 chemisorption by forming a thin layer of selected IL coating.

Interface Modifications of Lithium Metal Anode for Lithium Metal Batteries

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) enable much higher energy density than lithium–ion batteries (LIBs) and thus hold great promise for future transportation electrification. However, the adoption of lithium metal (Li) as an anode poses serious concerns about cell safety and performance, which has been hindering LMBs from commercialization. To this end, extensive effort has been invested in understanding the underlying mechanisms theoretically and experimentally and developing technical solutions. In this review, we devote to providing a comprehensive review of the challenges, characterizations, and interfacial engineering of Li anodes in both liquid and solid LMBs. Finally, we expect that this work will stimulate new efforts and help peer researchers find new solutions for the commercialization of LMBs.

An improved oxygen reduction reaction activity and CO 2 -tolerance of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ achieved by a surface modification with barium cobaltite coatings

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) cathode often suffers from the poisoning effect of the contaminants commonly encountered in air such as CO 2 . Here we report an effective approach to enhancing the activity and CO 2 tolerance of the state-of-the-art La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) cathode enabled by a coating of BaCoO 3-δ (BCO), as verified by the electrochemical testings, Raman analyses, and density functional theory calculations. When surface modified with a thin-film BCO coating, LSCF displays a much enhanced ORR activity and an improved durability against CO 2 . For example, anode supported SOFCs with the LSCF cathode coated with BCO coatings show a remarkable peak power density (Pmax) of 0.41 Wcm -2 and a significantly reduced degradation rate in current density of ~0.08% h -1 at 0.8 V and 700 °C for a period of 300 hs when humidified H2 (with 3 vol%H2O) was used as fuel and air with 8 vol% CO 2 as oxidant. The demonstrated performance is improved when compared with those of the cells with a blank LSCF electrode (a Pmax of ~0.36 Wcm -2 and a degradation rate of ~0.15% h -1 ) under the same conditions. Furthermore, the adsorption energy calculations suggests that BCO coating makes CO 2 adsorption much weaker than LSCF (-0.54 eV versus -1.07 eV).

Anion modification for stable solid electrolyte interphase in anode-free lithium metal batteries

The durability of anode-free Li metal batteries is largely limited by the undesired Li plating/stripping irreversibility on the current collector due to the infinite volume change, uncontrollable Li dendrite growth, and continuous parasitic reactions between Li metal and the electrolyte. To address these challenges, the formation of a stable and robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with high ionic conductivity and strong mechanical strength is critical. Here, we developed an advanced electrolyte by introducing LiNO 3 into the localized high concentration electrolyte (LHCE) with lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) salt, 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) solvent, and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropylether (TFTE) diluent to in situ construct a LiF and Li x N y O z co-enriched passivation layer on the Cu current collector. The synergetic effect of high mechanical strength of LiF and high ionic conductivity of Li x N y O z endows the Li metal anode with a high Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.35%. In conclusion, in anode-free Li metal pouch cell using LiFePO 4 (LFP) as a cathode holds an exceptionally improved capacity retention under the charging/discharging rate of 1/3 C, demonstrating great promise for developing dendrite-free and safe Li metal batteries.

Nucleobase-Functionalized Poly(alkylthiophene)s: One-Pot, Sequential Direct Arylation Polymerization and Deprotection, and Surface Modification for Oil–Water Separations

Direct arylation polymerization (DArP) has emerged as an environmentally friendly, atom efficient method of synthesizing a variety of conjugated polymers. In this work, we report a one-pot approach consisting of DArP followed by Boc deprotection to synthesize a functional, surface-active adenine-containing poly(alkylthiophene). Careful control over the polymerization temperature enables the one-pot polymerization and deprotection strategy for synthesis, with quantitative (>99%) Boc deprotection achieved in 24 h. This temperature-controlled synthesis method reduces extra purification and isolation steps, which makes the total synthesis more efficient and practical, and allows higher molecular weight polymer to be made. We quantify the hydrogen bonding ability of the resulting adenine-containing polythiophene, T Ad -tT 4h , by 1 H NMR host–guest titration studies and analyze the results with the Benesi–Hildebrand model, yielding an association constant of 18.7 M –1 between alkylated thymine and T Ad -tT 4h . We demonstrate that T Ad -tT 4h robustly modifies the surface of cellulosic filter paper (CFP), and the modified cellulosic filter paper, CFP-T Ad -tT 4h , is an effective oil–water separatory filter with superhydrophobic properties (water contact angle (CA) ~151°). The utility of hydrogen bonding interactions between adenine and cellulose highlights the importance of side-chain engineering for creating functional materials.
