From Rules to Reasoning: A Survey of Large Language Model-Based Approaches to Scientific Hypothesis and Idea Generation

Scientific hypothesis generation represents a fundamental challenge in contemporary research due to exponentially expanding literature volumes and increasing disciplinary specialization. Large language models (LLMs) have emerged as transformative tools for automated scientific discovery, moving beyond traditional rule-based and literature-mining approaches. Four paradigmatic approaches define current LLM-driven hypothesis generation: direct prompting and fine-tuning methods, knowledge-enhanced frameworks integrating retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), multi-agent collaborative systems simulating research teams, and reasoning-focused approaches implementing cognitive architectures. Domain-specific applications demonstrate statistical equivalence to human expert performance in social psychology, experimental validation in biomedical research, and near-expert quality in astronomy. Evaluation methodologies encompass human expert assessment, LLM-as-judge frameworks, and comprehensive benchmarking systems. Technical challenges include hallucination management, knowledge integration limitations, and balancing novelty with feasibility. Future directions emphasize hybrid neural-symbolic architectures and sophisticated human-AI collaboration models for responsible scientific discovery acceleration.

Stochastic Ensemble Generation for Improved Characterization of Representing Geologic Variability in a Reservoir: IBDP Case Study for SMART Initiative

This document is a poster covering the findings from activities on training data generation, specifically geologic ensemble generation. The generated geologic realizations captured the range of possible permeability distributions of the subsurface at the Illinois Basin - Decatur Project (IBDP) site, based on available well log variabilities. The percentages of reservoirs and baffles in the injection zone and a truncation of baffle permeability led to more variance in the simulations. This will be used to build forward modeling, history matching, and optimization workflows. The geologic realizations were also ranked according to dynamic measures of hydraulic diffusivity, and simulations confirm a greater contrast between the reservoir and the baffles during injection.

Generative AI for Wind-Wave Inflows

Extreme wind-wave conditions can create dangerous or damaging environmental conditions for sea-based structures and watercrafts. However, the model of consistent, coupled wind-wave flow conditions is computational expensive, even for simple flow scenarios. This work examines the use of diffusion-based generative artificial intelligence tools to accelerate the generation of these two-phase flows and to characterize probabilities of various states to help with the generation of extreme patterns.

A Physical Model Enhanced Data Driven Method for High-Resolution Residential Load Profile Generation

Residential buildings account for significant energy consumption, creating opportunities to offer grid services. As electric utilities seek to implement effective system operation strategies, understanding residential energy consumption patterns becomes essential; However, the time intervals of load profiles measured by utilities' smart meters are typically from 15 minutes to 60 minutes. The low-resolution data make it hard to extract appliance-level load information, which is critical for providing grid services. This paper presents a load profile generator designed to produce synthetic load profiles for residential buildings that emphasizes the importance of accurate representations of realistic energy consumption patterns. The generator takes realistic low-resolution residential load measurements and weather data as inputs, producing 1-minute interval profiles that match the characteristics of the original profiles. Further, this generator can be used to populate load profiles in areas where actual measurements are limited to improve the ability of utilities to analyze their distribution systems. By providing more high-resolution residential building load profiles, this tool supports electric utilities to enhance their residential building load control strategies and improve overall grid stability.

Steam Generators: Thermal Hydraulic Measurements and Instrumentation

Steam generators are integral components of both conventional and advanced reactors utilizing steam power cycles, as they influence the power conversion performance. Steam generator designs are highly influenced by the type of reactor coolant used, which mainly governs the different control, monitoring, and safety system actuation requirements. Therefore, the present work reviews the thermal hydraulics instrumentation within steam generators designed for pressurized water reactors (PWRs), high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs), sodium fast reactors (SFRs), and molten salt cooled reactors (MSRs). Emphasis is given to measurement techniques that are either unique or particularly important to specific reactor types. Lastly, a discussion is provided on the instrumentation and measured parameters. The work identifies standard parameters of interest and is expected to aid the development of test beds and novel measurements techniques.

Probabilistic #D data fusion for multiresolution surface generation

In this paper we present an algorithm for adaptive resolution integration of 3D data collected from multiple distributed sensors. The input to the algorithm is a set of 3D surface points and associated sensor models. Using a probabilistic rule, a surface probability function is generated that represents the probability that a particular volume of space contains the surface. The surface probability function is represented using an octree data structure; regions of space with samples of large conariance are stored at a coarser level than regions of space containing samples with smaller covariance. The algorithm outputs an adaptive resolution surface generated by connecting points that lie on the ridge of surface probability with triangles scaled to match the local discretization of space given by the algorithm, we present results from 3D data generated by scanning lidar and structure from motion.

Generation of Library Models for Verification of Android Applications

Android applications are difficult to verify and test since they have many external dependencies. To overcome this problem, environment generation can be used to create a model of the environment to simulate the behavior of these external dependencies. Creating this environment model manually is a tedious process and although there are many techniques available to generate models, the key lies in identifying how these techniques can be applied to a specific domain. In this paper we discuss two static analysis tools OCSEGen and Modgen and how they can be applied to the Android domain to generate models for specific parts of the environment.

Inlet Vortex Generator Design for the X-59 Low Boom Flight Demonstrator

An array of vortex generators was designed for the X-59 Low Boom Flight Demonstrator aircraft inlet. Prior to the a High Speed Inlet Distortion Test, concern regarding potentially high measurements of steady state or dynamic distortion prompted an effort to examine the use of passive flow control to reduce distortion levels. Design of experiments methodology was used to develop two matrices of vortex generators placed inside the inlet serpentine duct and upstream of the inlet on the compression surface, varying on several geometric parameters. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes simulations were performed using the FUN3D flow solver at Mach 1.45 to analyze the impact of each configuration on total pressure recovery, circumferential distortion, and radial distortion. Results from simulations of the baseline aircraft are compared with data acquired in the NASA Glenn Research Center’s 8- by 6-foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel. A vortex generator configuration with vanes placed upstream of the inlet terminal shock was shown to significantly increase total pressure recovery and decrease circumferential distortion with no penalty to radial distortion levels. Inlet mass flow sweeps at Mach 1.45, 0.6, and 0.3 indicated no detrimental effects from the vanes at off-design conditions.

Aerodynamic loss generation in a low-pressure turbine stage with high lift blading

The present work aims to investigate the loss generation mechanisms in a highly loaded low-pressure turbine (LPT) stage. The turbine employs high-lift airfoils to reduce the number of blades and therefore the overall engine weight. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is applied to study the detailed flow fields at two representative Reynolds numbers (150,000 and 40,000). The calculated flow fields are compared with available measured data. LES calculates the measured aerodynamic performance of the current turbine stage well. Both the measurements and the CFD simulations indicate that most of the aerodynamic loss is generated by the development of secondary flows near the rotor hub. An area of low momentum and high aerodynamic loss forms at roughly 25 % span above the hub downstream of the rotor. Formation and migration of a vortex system near the hub is the primary source of the loss generation. The hub wall vortex system in this highly loaded turbine stage is quite different from the horse-shoe vortex system in a typical stationary turbine cascade. Calculated instantaneous and time-averaged flow fields at two Reynolds numbers are examined in detail to study Reynolds number effects on the turbine stage performance. Steady and unsteady flow separation on the rotor suction side is calculated at both high and low Reynolds numbers. At the lower Reynolds number of 40,000, thicker blade boundary layers increase the area of flow separation on the rotor suction side, resulting in a 1.9 % increase in aerodynamic loss compared to the higher Reynolds number case.

Loft: An Automated Mesh Generator for Stiffened-Shell Aerospace Vehicles

Loft is an automated mesh generation code designed for aerospace vehicle structures. Based on user input, it can generate meshes for wings, noses, tanks, fuselage sections, thrust structures, etc. As the mesh is generated, each element is assigned properties that mark what part of the vehicle it is associated with. This property assignment is an extremely powerful feature making possible detailed analysis tasks such as load application and sizing. Loft can save its meshes in NASTRAN bulk data deck, EDS’ I-DEAS Universal File format, Abaqus input file format, VRML 2.0 (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) and STL (Stereo Lithography) files. The property assignment scheme was designed to make sizing in Collier Research’s HyperSizer easy. Support for other mesh storage formats can be added as needed.
