Phase II Cost-Benefit Analysis: Economic Impact Assessment For Indonesia Building Sector Whole-Building Cooling Solutions

The Net Zero World (NZW) Initiative Collaborative Work Program with the Government of Indonesia (GoI) includes technical assistance and investment mobilization facilitation to accelerate deployment of energy efficiency technologies and solutions for the building sector. A February 2023 US–Indonesia Joint Workshop on Decarbonizing the Building Sector yielded a NZW Indonesia Building Decarbonization Working Group (NZW IBDWG) with four sub working groups (SWGs): SWG-A National Center, SWG-B Capacity Building, SWG-C Investment and Financing, and SWG-D Pilot Projects.

On the Nanoscale Structure of K x Fe 2-y Ch 2 (Ch = S, Se): A Neutron Pair Distribution Function View

Comparative exploration of the nanometer-scale atomic structure of K x Fe 2-y Ch 2 (Ch = S, Se) was performed using neutron total scattering-based atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of 5 K powder diffraction data in relation to physical properties. Whereas K x Fe 2-y Se 2 is a superconductor with a transition temperature of about 32 K, the isostructural sulphide analogue is not, which instead displays a spin glass semiconducting behavior at low temperatures. The PDF analysis explores phase separated and disordered structural models as candidate descriptors of the low temperature data. For both materials, the nanoscale structure is well described by the iron (Fe)-vacancy-disordered K 2 Fe 5-y Ch 5 (I4/m) model containing excess Fe. An equally good description of the data is achieved by using a phase separated model comprised of I4/m vacancy-ordered and I4/mmm components. The I4/mmm component appears as a minority phase in the structure of both K x Fe 2-y Se 2 and K x Fe 2-y S 2 , and with similar contribution, implying that the phase ratio is not a decisive factor influencing the lack of superconductivity in the latter. Comparison of structural parameters of the Fe-vacancy-disordered model indicates that the replacement of selenium (Se) by sulphur (S) results in an appreciable reduction in the Fe-Ch interatomic distances and anion heights, while simultaneously increasing the irregularity of FeCh 4 tetrahedra, suggesting the more significant influence of these factors. Finally, structural features are also compared to the non-intercalated FeSe and FeS parent phases, providing further information for the discussion about the influence of the lattice degrees of freedom on the observed properties in layered iron chalcogenides.

Sensitivity Analysis of Fluid–Fluid Interfacial Area, Phase Saturation and Phase Connectivity on Relative Permeability Estimation Using Machine Learning Algorithms

Recent studies have shown that relative permeability can be modeled as a state function which is independent of flow direction and dependent upon phase saturation (S), phase connectivity (X), and fluid–fluid interfacial area (A). This study evaluates the impact of each of the three state parameters (S, X, and A) in the estimation of relative permeability. The relative importance of the three state parameters in four separate quadrants of S-X-A space was evaluated using a machine learning algorithm (out-of-bag predictor importance method). The results show that relative permeability is sensitive to all the three parameters, S, X, and A, with varying magnitudes in each of the four quadrants at a constant value of wettability. We observe that the wetting-phase relative permeability is most sensitive to saturation, while the non-wetting phase is most sensitive to phase connectivity. Although the least important, fluid–fluid interfacial area is still important to make the relative permeability a more exact state function.

Condensed Phase Guerbet Reactions of Ethanol/Isoamyl Alcohol Mixtures

The self-condensation and cross-condensation reactions of ethanol and isoamyl alcohol are examined to better understand the potential routes to value-added byproducts from fuel ethanol production. Reactions have been carried out in both batch autoclave and continuous condensed-phase reactors using a lanthanum-promoted, alumina-supported nickel catalyst at near-critical condensed phase conditions. Analysis of multiple candidate kinetic models led to a Langmuir–Hinshelwood rate expression that is first-order in alcohol with water as the strongly adsorbed species. This model provides the best fit of data from both batch and continuous reactor experiments. Activation energies for primary condensation reactions increase as carbon chain lengths increase. Selectivities to higher alcohols of 94% and 87% for ethanol and isoamyl alcohol, respectively, were observed at different operating conditions.
