Analog Radio-over-Fiber (A-RoF) communication technology constitutes a promising technique for next generation radio access networks thanks to its relatively low bandwidth requirements. Within this context, an efficient predistortion technique is proposed, which can be applied to reduce the impairments of A-RoF systems due to the combined effects of frequency chirp of the laser source and chromatic dispersion of the optical channel. The radio frequency signal is firstly put in digital form through an analog to digital converter, then the predistortion operation is realized, and finally the resulting signal is put again into analog form. A comprehensive analysis on the theoretical basis of the proposed approach is presented, together with the approximations introduced, which makes it practically realizable. The improvements on the quality of the received signal due to the proposed solution are illustrated with reference to scenarios of applicative interest. The performance of proposed technique is evaluated in terms of adjacent channel leakage ratio and error vector magnitude when long term evolution signal is applied at the input.
Radiation effects in materials often compound and accelerate other detrimental phenomena such as embrittlement, oxidation and creep. However, irradiation can also decrease the oxidation rate, for instance with ZrNb alloys nuclear fuel cladding. In this study, we rationalize this observation on Zr-0.5Nb alloy by introducing a mechanism based on oxide space charge modification, resulting from irradiation enhanced Nb clustering. Here, this mechanism is investigated using a multiscale approach: from the macroscale, to determine post-irradiation oxidation kinetics, to the atomic scale, using in-situ atom probe tomography sample oxidation, to observe elemental solute redistribution across the oxide/metal interface. The mechanism is further supported by high resolution transmission electron microscopy characterization and density functional theory calculations. A point defect model is proposed to account for oxide space charge effects and their changes under irradiation. This integrated, multiscale experimental and modeling approach challenges the current paradigm on irradiation effects and how they can potentially improve materials performance in extreme environments.

Noninvasive cardiac radioablation is increasingly used for treatment of refractory ventricular tachycardia. Attempts to limit normal tissue exposure are important, including managing motion of the target. An interplay between cardiac and respiratory motion exists for cardiac radioablation, which has not been studied in depth. The objectives of this study were to estimate target motion during abdominal compression free breathing (ACFB) and respiratory gated (RG) deliveries and to investigate the quality of either implanted cardioverter defibrillator lead tip or the diaphragm as a gating surrogate.

Selective production of gasoline ranged chemicals were of great interest in the field of plastic upcycling. Here this work reports exothermic hydrogen transfer reaction which was observed when HY zeolite was adopted to catalytic pyrolyze the polyethylene to gasoline ranged chemicals, while it was not observed when H-ZSM5 was used as catalyst. Both zeolite catalysts could significantly bring down the reaction temperature from 500 to 300–350 °C. TG-FITR analysis revealed that products obtained with HY zeolites were dominated with saturated hydrocarbons as compared to H-ZSM5 where the combination of alkanes, alkenes, and aromatics was obtained. In addition to the formation of saturated compounds, the TG-DSC analysis confirmed that, over the HY zeolites, the endothermic hydrogen transfer reaction of olefins occurred along with the pyrolysis of LDPE visibly when the zeolite ratio in the zeolite/polyethylene mixture exceeded 50% by mass. The TG results also indicated that the polyethylene undergone nearly 100% converted with very few residues. Further product analysis from batch pyrolysis by GC-MS confirmed that gasoline ranged iso-alkanes were produced over HY zeolite. This study highlighted that coupling exothermic hydrogen transfer reactions with endothermic pyrolysis could be an energy-efficient way of producing gasoline ranged chemicals. Chemical upcycling of plastics is tunable by using different zeolite combinations for the formation of desired products.
For crystal plasticity formulation neglecting the strain gradients at the dislocation scale, backstresses are necessary to satisfy the mesoscopic stress equilibrium and strain compatibility requirements. Backstresses in a material point and those between neighboring points are treated separately. Physically backstresses can dynamically induce either hardening or softening effects to adjust the dislocation hardening of slip systems, whereas the sum of the stresses resulting in backstresses in the representative volume element (RVE) is zero. Backstress hardening suppresses certain slip activities, while backstress softening triggers excess dislocations. A two-phase brass is studied. Backstresses make the hard phase deform smaller and the soft phase deform more than those without employing backstresses in a model. In the former, more homogeneous lattice strain and higher yield stress are obtained. Backstress has limited effects on the evolution of the critical resolved shear stress and crystallographic texture. Furthermore, it is a major cause of the banded structures featuring sharp crystallographic contrasts which are not parallel to the slip planes. Tests indicate that backstress induces a serrated behavior at the early stages of deformation and induces the geometrically necessary bands (GNBs), which are parallel to the macroscopic axes.
