Critical role of isopotential surfaces for magnetostatic ponderomotive forces

By producing localized wave regions at the ends of an open-field-line magnetic confinement system, ponderomotive walls can be used to differentially confine different species in the plasma. Furthermore, if the plasma is rotating, this wall can be magnetostatic in the laboratory frame, resulting in simpler engineering and better power flow. However, recent work on such magnetostatic walls has shown qualitatively different potentials than those found in the earlier, nonrotating theory. Here, using a simple slab model of a ponderomotive wall, we resolve this discrepancy. We show that the form of the ponderomotive potential in the comoving plasma frame depends on the assumption made about the electrostatic potential in the laboratory frame. If the laboratory-frame potential is unperturbed by the magnetic oscillation, one finds a parallel-polarized wave in the comoving frame, while if each field line remains equipotential throughout the perturbation region, one finds a perpendicularly polarized wave. As a result, this in turn dramatically changes the averaged ponderomotive force experienced by a charged particle along the field line, not only its scaling, but also its direction.

Fractons from Vector Gauge Theory

Motivated by the prediction of fractonic topological defects in a quantum crystal, we utilize a reformulated elasticity duality to derive a description of a fracton phase in terms of coupled vector U(1) gauge theories. The fracton order and restricted mobility emerge as a result of an unusual Gauss law where electric field lines of one gauge field act as sources of charge for others. At low energies this vector gauge theory reduces to the previously studied fractonic symmetric tensor gauge theory. Here, we construct the corresponding lattice model and a number of generalizations, which realize fracton phases via a condensation of stringlike excitations built out of charged particles, analogous to the p-string condensation mechanism of the gapped X-cube fracton phase.

Observable signatures of initial state momentum anisotropies in nuclear collisions

In this work, we show that the correlation between the elliptic momentum anisotropy v 2 and the average transverse momentum [ p T ] at fixed multiplicity in small system nuclear collisions carries information on the origin of the observed momentum anisotropy. A calculation using a hybrid IP-Glasma+ music +UrQMD model that includes contributions from final state response to the initial geometry as well as initial state momentum anisotropies of the color glass condensate predicts a characteristic sign change of the correlator ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) as a function of charged particle multiplicity in p + Au and d + Au collisions at s = 200 GeV , and p + Pb collisions at s = 5.02 TeV . This sign change is absent in calculations without initial state momentum anisotropies. The model further predicts a qualitative difference between the centrality dependence of ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) in Au + Au collisions at s = 200 GeV and Pb + Pb collisions at s = 5.02 TeV , with only the latter showing a sign change in peripheral events. Predictions for O + O collisions at different collision energy show a similar behavior. Experimental observation of these distinct qualitative features of ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) in small and large systems would constitute strong evidence for the presence and importance of initial state momentum anisotropies predicted by the color glass condensate effective theory.

Constraining the P 30 ( p , γ ) S 31 Reaction Rate in ONe Novae via the Weak, Low-Energy, β -Delayed Proton Decay of Cl 31

The 30 P(p,γ) 31 S reaction plays an important role in understanding the nucleosynthesis of A ≥ 30 nuclides in oxygen-neon novae. The Gaseous Detector with Germanium Tagging was used to measure 31 Cl β-delayed proton decay through the key J π = 3/2 + , 260-keV resonance. The intensity $I$$^{260}_{βp}$ = $8.3$$^{+1.2}_{–0.9}$ × 10 –6 represents the weakest β-delayed, charged-particle emission ever measured below 400 keV, resulting in a proton branching ratio of Γ p /Γ = $2.5$$^{+0.4}_{–0.3}$ × 10 –4 . Here, by combining this measurement with shell-model calculations for Γγ and past work on other resonances, the total 30 P(p,γ) 31 S rate has been determined with reduced uncertainty. The new rate has been used in hydrodynamic simulations to model the composition of nova ejecta, leading to a concrete prediction of 30 Si: 28 Si excesses in presolar nova grains and the calibration of nuclear thermometers.

Electronic Excitation Response of DNA to High-Energy Proton Radiation in Water

The lack of molecular-level understanding for the electronic excitation response of DNA to charged particle radiation, such as high-energy protons, remains a fundamental scientific bottleneck in advancing proton and other ion beam cancer therapies. In particular, the dependence of different types of DNA damage on high-energy protons represents a significant knowledge void. Here, in this work, we employ first-principles real-time time-dependent density functional theory simulation, using a massively parallel supercomputer, to unravel the quantum-mechanical details of the energy transfer from high-energy protons to DNA in water. The calculations reveal that protons deposit significantly more energy onto the DNA sugar-phosphate side chains than onto the nucleobases, and greater energy transfer is expected onto the DNA side chains than onto water. As a result of this electronic stopping process, highly energetic holes are generated on the DNA side chains as a source of oxidative damage.

Beam Energy Dependence of Triton Production and Yield Ratio $N_t \times N_p / N^2_d$ in Au+Au Collisions at RHIC

We report the triton (t) production in midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7-200$ GeV measured by the STAR experiment from the first phase of the beam energy scan at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The nuclear compound yield ratio ($N_t \times N_p / N^2_d$), which is predicted to be sensitive to the fluctuation of local neutron density, is observed to decrease monotonically with increasing charged-particle multiplicity ($dN_{ch}/dη$) and follows a scaling behavior. The $dN_{ch}/dη$ dependence of the yield ratio is compared to calculations from coalescence and thermal models. Enhancements in the yield ratios relative to the coalescence baseline are observed in the 0%-10% most central collisions at 19.6 and 27 GeV, with a significance of 2.3σ and 3.4σ, respectively, giving a combined significance of 4.1σ. The enhancements are not observed in peripheral collisions or model calculations without critical fluctuation, and decreases with a smaller $p_T$ acceptance. The physics implications of these results on the QCD phase structure and the production mechanism of light nuclei in heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

Evidence for Modification of $b$ Quark Hadronization in High-Multiplicity $pp$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The production rate of $B^{0}_{s}$ mesons relative to $B^0$ mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV over the forward rapidity interval 2 < $y$ < 4.5 as a function of the charged particle multiplicity measured in the event. Evidence at the 3.4$σ$ level is found for an increase of the ratio of $B^{0}_{s}$ to $B^0$ cross sections with multiplicity at transverse momenta below 6 GeV /$c$, with no significant multiplicity dependence at higher transverse momentum. Comparison with data from $e^+$ $e^–$ collisions implies that the density of the hadronic medium may affect the production rates of $B$ mesons. This is qualitatively consistent with the emergence of quark coalescence as an additional hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity collisions.

Observation of the $γγ → ττ$ Process in $\mathrm{Pb + Pb}$ Collisions and Constraints on the $\tau$-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions, Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb, and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment, a τ . The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44 nb -1 of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations, and a signal strength of μ ττ =1.03$^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ assuming the Standard Model value for a τ . To measure a τ , a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. The observed 95% confidence-level interval for aτ is -0.057 < a τ < 0.024.

Enhanced Production of Λ b 0 Baryons in High-Multiplicity p p Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The production rate of Λ b 0 baryons relative to B 0 mesons in p p collisions at a center-of-mass energy s = 13 TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of Λ b 0 to B 0 production cross sections shows a significant dependence on both the transverse momentum and the measured charged-particle multiplicity. At low multiplicity, the ratio measured at LHCb is consistent with the value measured in e + e − collisions, and increases by a factor of ∼ 2 with increasing multiplicity. At relatively low transverse momentum, the ratio of Λ b 0 to B 0 cross sections is higher than what is measured in e + e − collisions, but converges with the e + e − ratio as the momentum increases. These results imply that the evolution of heavy b quarks into final-state hadrons is influenced by the density of the hadronic environment produced in the collision. Comparisons with several models and implications for the mechanisms enforcing quark confinement are discussed. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Observation of Skewed Electromagnetic Wakefields in an Asymmetric Structure Driven by Flat Electron Bunches

Relativistic charged -particle beams that generate intense longitudinal fields in accelerating structures also inherently couple to transverse modes. The effects of this coupling may lead to beam breakup instability and thus must be countered to preserve beam quality in applications such as linear colliders. Beams with highly asymmetric transverse sizes (flat beams) have been shown to suppress the initial instability in slab -symmetric structures. However, as the coupling to transverse modes remains, this solution serves only to delay instability. In order to understand the hazards of transverse coupling in such a case, we describe here an experiment characterizing the transverse effects on a flat beam, traversing near a planar dielectric lined structure. Further, the measurements reveal the emergence of a previously unobserved skew-quadrupolelike interaction when the beam is canted transversely, which is not present when the flat beam travels parallel to the dielectric surface. We deploy a multipole field fitting algorithm to reconstruct the projected transverse wakefields from the data. We generate the effective kick vector map using a simple two -particle theoretical model, with particle -in -cell simulations used to provide further insight for realistic particle distributions.

Neck Rupture and Scission Neutrons in Nuclear Fission

Just before a nucleus undergoes fission, a neck is formed between the emerging fission fragments. It is widely accepted that this neck undergoes a rather violent rupture, despite the absence of unambiguous experimental evidence. The main difficulty in addressing the neck rupture and saddle-to-scission stages of fission is that both are highly nonequilibrium processes. Here, we present the first fully microscopic characterization of the scission mechanism, along with the spectrum and the spatial distribution of scission neutrons (SNs), and some upper limit estimates for the emission of charged particles. The spectrum of SNs has a distinct angular distribution, with neutrons emitted in roughly equal numbers in the equatorial plane and along the fission axis. They carry an average energy around 3±0.5 MeV for the fission of 236 U, 240 Pu, and 252 Cf, and a maximum of 16–18 MeV. We estimate a conservative lower bound of 9%–14% of the total emitted neutrons are produced at scission.

Observation of Medium-Induced Yield Enhancement and Acoplanarity Broadening of Low-𝑝T Jets from Measurements in 𝑝⁢𝑝 and Central Pb-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high p T ) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet resolution parameter R = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.5 in the range 7 < p T.jet < 140 GeV=c and trigger-recoil jet azimuthal separation π/2 < Δφ < π. The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low p T and at large azimuthal deviation from Δφ ~ π. The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on Δφ, which has a slope that differs from zero by 4.7σ. Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported. These comparisons indicate that the observed yield enhancement arises from the response of the QGP medium to jet propagation.

Piecewise Omnigenous Stellarators

In omnigenous magnetic fields, charged particles are perfectly confined in the absence of collisions and turbulence. For this reason, the magnetic configuration is optimized to be close to omnigenity in any candidate for a stellarator fusion reactor. However, approaching omnigenity imposes severe constraints on the spatial variation of the magnetic field. In particular, the topology of the contours of constant magnetic field strength on each magnetic surface must be such that there are no particles transitioning between different types of wells. This, in turn, usually leads to complicated plasma shapes and coils. This Letter presents a new family of optimized fields that display tokamak-like collisional energy transport while having transitioning particles. This result radically broadens the space of accessible reactor-relevant configurations.

Disentangling Centrality Bias and Final-State Effects in the Production of High-𝑝 𝑇 Neutral Pions Using Direct Photon in 𝑑+Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

Here, PHENIX presents a simultaneous measurement of the production of direct 𝛾 and 𝜋 0 in 𝑑 + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV over a 𝑝 𝑇 range of 7.5 to 18 GeV/𝑐 for different event samples selected by event activity, i.e., charged-particle multiplicity detected at forward rapidity. Direct-photon yields are used to empirically estimate the contribution of hard-scattering processes in the different event samples. Using this estimate, the average nuclear-modification factor, 𝑅$^{𝜋^0}_{dAu,EXP}$, is 0.925 ± 0.023⁢(stat) ± 0.15⁢(scale), consistent with unity for minimum-bias (MB) 𝑑+Au collisions. For event classes with low and moderate event activity, 𝑅$^{𝜋^0}_{dAu,EXP}$ is consistent with the MB value within 5% uncertainty. This result confirms that the previously observed enhancement of high-𝑝 𝑇 𝜋 0 production found in small-system collisions with low event activity is a result of a bias in interpreting event activity within the Glauber framework. In contrast, for the top 5% of events with the highest event activity, 𝑅$^{𝜋^0}_{dAu,EXP}$ is suppressed by 20% relative to the MB value with a significance of 4.5⁢𝜎, which may be due to final-state effects. This suppression corresponds to a 𝑝 𝑇 shift of 𝛿⁢𝑝 𝑇 = 0.213 ± 0.055 Gev/𝑐 at 9 Gev/𝑐.

Search for Nuclear Modifications of 𝐵 + Meson Production in 𝑝-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

Nuclear medium effects on 𝐵 + meson production are studied using the binary-collision scaled cross section ratio between events of different charged-particle multiplicities from proton-lead collisions. Data, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{𝑠_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb −1 , were used. The scaling factors in the ratio are determined using a novel approach based on the 𝑍 → 𝜇 − ⁢𝜇 + cross sections measured in the same events. The scaled ratio for 𝐵 + is consistent with unity for all event multiplicities, putting stringent constraints on nuclear modification for heavy flavor.

Nonperturbative Guiding Center Model for Magnetized Plasmas

Perturbative guiding center theory adequately describes the slow drift motion of charged particles in the strongly magnetized regime characteristic of thermal particle populations in various magnetic fusion devices. However, it breaks down for particles with large-enough energy. Here, we report on a data-driven method for learning a nonperturbative guiding center model from full-orbit particle simulation data. We show the data-driven model significantly outperforms traditional asymptotic theory in magnetization regimes appropriate for fusion-born α particles in stellarators, thus opening the door to nonperturbative guiding center calculations.

Measurement of In-Medium Jet Modification Using Direct Photon + Jet and 𝜋 0 + Jet Correlations in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Central Au + Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

The STAR Collaboration presents measurements of the semi-inclusive distribution of charged-particle jets recoiling from energetic direct-photon (𝛾 dir ) and neutral-pion (𝜋 0 ) triggers in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and central Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =2 00 GeV over a broad kinematic range, for jet resolution parameters 𝑅 = 0.2 and 0.5. Medium-induced jet yield suppression is observed to be larger for 𝑅 = 0.2 than for 0.5, reflecting the angular range of jet energy redistribution due to quenching. The predictions of model calculations incorporating jet quenching are not fully consistent with the observations. Furthermore, these results provide new insight into the physical origins of jet quenching.

Search for Quasiparticle Scattering in the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Jet Splittings in 𝑝⁢𝑝 and Pb-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration reports measurements of the large relative transverse momentum (𝑘 𝑇 ) component of jet substructure in 𝑝⁢𝑝 and Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Enhancement in the yield of such large-𝑘 T emissions in head-on Pb-Pb collisions is predicted to arise from partonic scattering with quasiparticles of the quark-gluon plasma. The analysis utilizes charged-particle jets reconstructed by the anti-𝑘 T algorithm with resolution parameter 𝑅 = 0.2 in the transverse-momentum interval 60 < 𝑝 T,ch,jet < 80 GeV/𝑐. The soft drop and dynamical grooming algorithms are used to identify high transverse momentum splittings in the jet shower. Comparison of measurements in Pb-Pb and 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions shows medium-induced narrowing, corresponding to yield suppression of high-𝑘 𝑇 splittings, in contrast to the expectation of yield enhancement due to quasiparticle scattering. The measurements are compared to theoretical model calculations incorporating jet modification due to jet-medium interactions (“jet quenching”), both with and without quasiparticle scattering effects. These measurements provide new insight into the underlying mechanisms and theoretical modeling of jet quenching.
