Legato: Personal Computer Software for Analyzing Pressure-Sensitive Paint Data

'Legato' is personal computer software for analyzing radiometric pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) data. The software is written in the C programming language and executes under Windows 95/98/NT operating systems. It includes all operations normally required to convert pressure-paint image intensities to normalized pressure distributions mapped to physical coordinates of the test article. The program can analyze data from both single- and bi-luminophore paints and provides for both in situ and a priori paint calibration. In addition, there are functions for determining paint calibration coefficients from calibration-chamber data. The software is designed as a self-contained, interactive research tool that requires as input only the bare minimum of information needed to accomplish each function, e.g., images, model geometry, and paint calibration coefficients (for a priori calibration) or pressure-tap data (for in situ calibration). The program includes functions that can be used to generate needed model geometry files for simple model geometries (e.g., airfoils, trapezoidal wings, rotor blades) based on the model planform and airfoil section. All data files except images are in ASCII format and thus are easily created, read, and edited. The program does not use database files. This simplifies setup but makes the program inappropriate for analyzing massive amounts of data from production wind tunnels. Program output consists of Cartesian plots, false-colored real and virtual images, pressure distributions mapped to the surface of the model, assorted ASCII data files, and a text file of tabulated results. Graphical output is displayed on the computer screen and can be saved as publication-quality (PostScript) files.

T on the Cray X/MP

This research was aimed at porting the T programming language, a dialect of LISP, to the Cray X/MP computer. The effort involved research into systems engineering and software engineering problems related not only to compiler design and implementation, but also to parallel computation, the X/MP being a shared-memory multiprocessor. Porting also involved the sub-tasks of retargeting the assembler, code-generator, and run-time system. A reasonably effective porting methodology that is relatively straight forward, although more difficult than table-driven approaches, has been developed. The run-time system was not ported, and thus the T programs cannot be run without explicit linking of the required run-time support. The run-time performance gain achieved in generated code was found to be disappointing. Recommendations for the achievement of higher performance are given.

Efficient detection, analysis and classification of lightning radiation fields

Modeling the large scale lightning flash structure is considered. Large scale flash data has been measured from strip charts of storms of August 5, August 26, and September 12, 1975. The data is being processed by a computer program called SASEV to estimate the large scale flash statistics. The program, experimental results, and conclusions for the large scale flash structure are described. The progress made in examining the internal flash structure consists mainly of developing the software required to process the NASA digital tape data. A FORTRAN program has been written for the statistical analysis of series of events. The statistics computed and tests performed are found to be particularly useful in the analysis of lightning data.

In the soft-to-hard technical spectrum: Where is software engineering?

In the computer journals and tabloids, there have been a plethora of articles written about the software engineering field. But while advocates of the need for an engineering approach to software development, it is impressive how many authors have treated the subject of software engineering without adequately addressing the fundamentals of what engineering as a discipline consists of. A discussion is presented of the various related facets of this issue in a logical framework to advance the thesis that the software development process is necessarily an engineering process. The purpose is to examine more of the details of the issue of whether or not the design and development of software for digital computer processing systems should be both viewed and treated as a legitimate field of professional engineering. Also, the type of academic and professional level education programs that would be required to support a software engineering discipline is examined.

Tuning the Performance of a Computational Persistent Homology Package

In recent years, persistent homology has become an attractive method for data analysis. It captures topological features, such as connected components, holes, and voids from point cloud data and summarizes the way in which these features appear and disappear in a filtration sequence. In this project, we focus on improving the performanceof Eirene, a computational package for persistent homology. Eirene is a 5000-line open-source software library implemented in the dynamic programming language Julia. We use the Julia profiling tools to identify performance bottlenecks and develop novel methods to manage them, including the parallelization of some time-consuming functions on multicore/manycore hardware. Empirical results show that performance can be greatly improved.

Video-Game-Like Engine for Depicting Spacecraft Trajectories

GoView is a video-game-like software engine, written in the C and C++ computing languages, that enables real-time, three-dimensional (3D)-appearing visual representation of spacecraft and trajectories (1) from any perspective; (2) at any spatial scale from spacecraft to Solar-system dimensions; (3) in user-selectable time scales; (4) in the past, present, and/or future; (5) with varying speeds; and (6) forward or backward in time. GoView constructs an interactive 3D world by use of spacecraft-mission data from pre-existing engineering software tools. GoView can also be used to produce distributable application programs for depicting NASA orbital missions on personal computers running the Windows XP, Mac OsX, and Linux operating systems. GoView enables seamless rendering of Cartesian coordinate spaces with programmable graphics hardware, whereas prior programs for depicting spacecraft trajectories variously require non-Cartesian coordinates and/or are not compatible with programmable hardware. GoView incorporates an algorithm for nonlinear interpolation between arbitrary reference frames, whereas the prior programs are restricted to special classes of inertial and non-inertial reference frames. Finally, whereas the prior programs present complex user interfaces requiring hours of training, the GoView interface provides guidance, enabling use without any training.

Capsule_Grid User Guide

Software utility CAPSULE_GRID and several related procedures that automate grid generation for computational fluid dynamics calculations about axisymmetric atmospheric entry vehicles are described as a supplement to the documentation within the source codes. This application program and its ancillary software utilities are all in the public domain at the web site https://software.nasa.gov/software/category/all/arc/1/cfdtools with the exception of the 2D hyperbolic volume gridding step for which scripts driving either GRIDGEN1 or HYPGEN2 are available. CAPSULE_GRID was developed at NASA Ames Research Center in support of the DPLR3 real gas flow solver. Both forebodies (only) and full bodies are treated, for axisymmetric 2D flow calculations or for 3D calculations at angle of attack. The expected application is to the smooth outer mold line of a hypersonic atmospheric entry vehicle, for which a single layer of point-matched structured grid blocks normally suffices. Control files for a variety of representative cases are included with illustrations of results, and some insights into the subtleties of curvature-based grid point distribution are provided. Gridding of a capsule on a sting is supported. Additional procedures for treating arbitrarily long 2D wakes, prompted by asteroid studies and relevant to spacecraft such as Stardust, are also documented. Most recently, treating an asymmetric forebody (including an off-center nose, with or without an aft body) has been incorporated as an extra step.

Prediction of ball and roller bearing thermal and kinematic performance by computer analysis

Characteristics of good computerized analysis software are suggested. These general remarks and an overview of representative software precede a more detailed discussion of load support system analysis program structure. Particular attention is directed at a recent cylindrical roller bearing analysis as an example of the available design tools. Selected software modules are then examined to reveal the detail inherent in contemporary analysis. This leads to a brief section on current design computation which seeks to suggest when and why computerized analysis is warranted. An example concludes the argument offered for such design methodology. Finally, remarks are made concerning needs for model development to address effects which are now considered to be secondary but are anticipated to emerge to primary status in the near future.
