An inductively powered telemetry system for temperature, EKG, and activity monitoring

An implant telemetry system for the simultaneous monitoring of temperature, activity, and EKG from small animals, such as rats, has recently been designed with the novel feature that instead of a battery the system is energized by an inductive field. A 250 kHz resonant coil surrounds the cage (30 x 30 x 20 cm) and provides the approximately 100 microwatt of power required to operate the implant transmitter while allowing the animal unrestrained movement in the cage. The implant can also be battery operated if desired. RF transmission is in the 8-10 MHz band, which allows the use of a simple, essentially single IC chip, receiver.

HEAO 1 observations of 4U1232+07

An analysis of the NRL HEAO 1 observations of the Virgo cluster and 3C 273 has revealed X-ray emission from a region between these two objects. The most satisfactory explanation is the presence of two weak X-ray sources, for which error boxes have been obtained. One source is likely to be the peculiar galaxy IC 3576, suggested by Margon et al. (1972) as the source 2U 1231+07=4U 1232+07. The error box resulting from combining the present observations with the 4U data strengthen the X-ray identification with this extremely interesting galaxy. There are numerous possibilities for the other X-ray source, including the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 4410a and NGC 4410b (NGC 4410a/b).

Low-resistance continuity tester

IC printed-circuit board tester measures resistance as low as 0.1 ohm but uses little power. Two 4.7 kilohm resistors and connected transistors prevent current flow through operational amplifier until probe circuit is complete, eliminating need for on/off switch. Zener diode in series with amplifier output prevents audio oscillator operation until output has sufficient amplitude. Circuit utilizes 741 operational amplifier on 11.2 volt battery or lower voltage amplifiers.

Fast calibration of gas flowmeters

Digital unit automates calibration sequence using calculator IC and programmable read-only memory to solve calibration equations. Infrared sensors start and stop calibration sequence. Instrument calibrates mass flowmeters or rotameters where flow measurement is based on mass or volume. This automatic control reduces operator time by 80 percent. Solid-state components are very reliable, and digital character allows system accuracy to be determined primarily by accuracy of transducers.

Shock enhancement of HCO/+/

In the shocked gas associated with the supernova remnant IC 443, it is found that the HCO(+)/CO abundance is approximately 0.004. This is about 100 times greater than in the unshocked gas in this source where the ratio is typical of molecular clouds. This increase contradicts some current models for shock chemistry which predict a decrease of HCO(+) behind shock fronts.

X-ray quasars

Observational data for the seven quasars or Seyfert-quasar transition objects identified with X-ray sources is reviewed for radio, infrared, optical, ultraviolet, X-ray and gamma-ray frequencies. The observational histories of the quasars 3C 273, MR 2251-178 and 0241+622 and the quasar-like Seyfert nuclei Fairall-9, Mk 509, IC 4329A and IIIZw 2 are discussed in detail, and it is noted that their X-ray variability and spectra do not differentiate them from Seyfert nuclei, supporting the similarity between the several types of active extragalactic nuclei. The space density of the six objects (excluding 3C 273) within 600 Mpc is found to be comparable to that of other Seyferts and quasars, suggesting that X-ray emitting objects constitute a substantial fraction of the luminous transition objects in the neighborhood of the Galaxy. It is also pointed out that observations of the X-ray variability of these objects, which indicates that the X-rays originate from compact regions, represent a promising means for the further understanding of the emission process.

The large-scale far-infrared structure of W3 and W4

The large-scale structure of the giant H II region complex W3/W4 has been mapped in two wavelength bands covering 60 to 120 microns at an angular resolution of 12 arc min. The only region of strong emission observed lies along a molecular ridge at an ionization/shock front in the sources. This structure supports the idea that a new generation of stars formed after neutral material ahead of the front became gravitationally unstable. These embedded stars are dominating the energetics of the molecular/infrared cloud, although the visible OCl 352 cluster in neighboring IC 1805 may supply much of the heating flux to the fainter regions. A simple model relating the far-infrared and CO emission is presented.

The carbon abundance in two h 2 regions of the small Megallanic Cloud

Observations of the ultraviolet spectra of two locations in the H II region NGC 346 and of the entire H II region IC 1644 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) were made using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. The abundance of carbon in the nebulae was derived using theoretical model analysis combined with ground-based spectrophotometry of other emission lines. The abundance of C relative to H in the SMC was found to be lower by -0.9 dex compared with the Sun and lower by -0.8 dex compared with the Orion Nebula. This C deficiency is similar to that of O, Ne, S, and Ar in the SMC, but not as great as found for N. The sites and history of C nucleosynthesis in galaxies is similar to that of O, Ne, S, and Ar, in contrast to that of N, which appears to be more complex, perhaps because of a mixture of secondary primary sources or a significant contribution from intermediate-mass long-lived stars.

Mechanics of fracture - Fundamentals and some recent developments

An overview is presented of the fundamental aspects of and recent developments in fracture mechanics. Reference is made to linear elastic fracture mechanics including the state of stresses and displacements in the vicinity of cracks, effects of crack geometry and orientation on stress intensity factors, energy balance of Griffith, Irwin's stress intensity concept, and linear elastic fracture mechanics testing for fracture toughness. Other aspects of this paper include the non-linear behavior of materials and their influence on fracture mechanics parameters, consideration of viscoelasticity and plasticity, non-linear fracture toughness parameters as C.O.D., R-curve and J-integral, and a non-linear energy method, proposed by Liebowitz. Finite element methods applied to fracture mechanics problems are indicated. Also, consideration has been given to slow crack growth, dynamic effects on K(IC), Sih's criterion for fracture, Lee and Liebowitz's criterion relating crack growth with plastic energy, and applications of fracture mechanics to aircraft design. Suggestions are offered for future research efforts to be undertaken in fracture mechanics.

Terminal Strip Facilitates Printed-Circuit Board Changes

Laminanted copper and polyimide terminal strip makes it easy to modify printed-circuit (PC) board, after board has been fabricated. When epoxied over conductors or insulating portion of PC board, strip provides series of solder-coated copper conductor pads to which integrated-circuit leads are soldered for functional changes. Terminal strips accommodate leads on dual inline IC package or as staggered single or multiple leads on planar mounted flatpacks.

Architecture for VLSI design of Reed-Solomon encoders

The logic structure of a universal VLSI chip called the symbol-slice Reed-Solomon (RS) encoder chip is discussed. An RS encoder can be constructed by cascading and properly interconnecting a group of such VLSI chips. As a design example, it is shown that a (255,223) RD encoder requiring around 40 discrete CMOS ICs may be replaced by an RS encoder consisting of four identical interconnected VLSI RS encoder chips. Besides the size advantage, the VLSI RS encoder also has the potential advantages of requiring less power and having a higher reliability.

Stratification effects and IUE spectra of high excitation planetaries

Individual strips across IUE low resolution images of a number of high excitation planetaries with appreciable angular disks (including NGC 2452, 3242, 6818, and IC 1297) are analyzed to assess stratification effects. The familiar enhancement of high excitation lines toward the center is well exhibited, but some unexpected structural features are found in NGC 2452 where C IV shows a single central maximum, but C III, Ne IV, and He II seem to have a central dip. The new IUE data permit improved chemical composition estimates for several planetaries previously analyzed by Aller and Czyzak.
