A Generalized Method for Automatic Downhand and Wirefeed Control of a Welding Robot and Positioner

A generalized method for controlling a six degree-of-freedom (DOF) robot and a two DOF positioner used for arc welding operations is described. The welding path is defined in the part reference frame, and robot/positioner joint angles of the equivalent eight DOF serial linkage are determined via an iterative solution. Three algorithms are presented: the first solution controls motion of the eight DOF mechanism such that proper torch motion is achieved while minimizing the sum-of-squares of joint displacements; the second algorithm adds two constraint equations to achieve torch control while maintaining part orientation so that welding occurs in the downhand position; and the third algorithm adds the ability to control the proper orientation of a wire feed mechanism used in gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding operations. A verification of these algorithms is given using ROBOSIM, a NASA developed computer graphic simulation software package design for robot systems development.

Welding torch gas cup extension

The invention relates to a gas shielded electric arc welding torch having a detachable gas cup extension which may be of any desired configuration or length. The gas cup extension assembly is mounted on a standard electric welding torch gas cup to enable welding in areas with limited access. The gas cup assembly has an upper tubular insert that fits within the gas cup such that its lower portion protrudes thereform and has a lower tubular extension that is screwed into the lower portion. The extension has a rim to define the outer perimeter of the seat edge about its entrance opening so a gasket may be placed to effect an airtight seal between the gas cup and extension. The tubular extension may be made of metal or cermaic material that can be machined. The novelty lies in the use of an extension assembly for a standard gas cup of an electric arc welding torch which extension assembly is detachable permitting the use of a number of extensions which may be of different configurations and materials and yet fit the standard gas cup.

Gray-Scale Processing For Tracking Of Welds

Digital analysis of video-image-processing system contributes to automation of weld-seam tracking. Makes no contact with seam. Small television camera views seam just ahead of point currently being welded. Arc provides illumination. Periodically frame grabber digitizes video image and stores in computer memory as gray-scale values. Seam located by analyzing Hough-transform arrays of derivatives of digitally-filtered image data. Information on location and orientation of seam used as feedback by welding robot to correct deviations of electrode from seam as welding continues.

Identification Of Anomalies In Welds

Advanced techniques combined with conventional analytical methods. Combination of real-time radiography, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectrometry identify enigmatic features in radiographs of welds where standard tensile, hardness, and electrical-conductivity tests and visible-light microscopic and macroscopic examinations insufficient. New combination of techniques applied successfully to variable-polarity-plasma-arc welds of 2219 aluminum alloy. Joints subjected to penetration, fill, and weld-repair passes with 2319 aluminum weld wire.

Conceptual electro-optical shutter subsystem regulates intensity of light entering video camera from variable-plasma-pulse-arc weld in process. Camera part of video system that enables welding technician to obtain better view of weld bead and puddle in light of arc. Electro-optical shutter opened during low-illumination viewing intervals near zero crossings of welding current, preventing overloading of video camera.

Weld stresses beyond elastic limit: Materials discontinuity

When welded structures depend on properties beyond the elastic limit to qualify their ultimate safety factor, and weld-parent materials abruptly change at the interface, then stress discontinuity is inevitable. The stress concentration is mildly sensitive to material relative strain hardening and acutely sensitive to applied stress fields. Peak stresses occur on the weld surface, at the interface, and dissipate within a 0.01-inch band. When the stress is intense, the weld will always fracture at the interface. The analysis incorporates a classical mechanics model to more sharply define stress spikes within the bandwidth, and suggests a relative material index and Poisson's ratio related to strain hardening. Implications are discussed which are applicable to industries of high performance structures.

Welding-Current Indicator

Light flashes on to indicate high current. Simple, inexpensive display circuit indicates when 3,000-A welding current flows in welding gun. Onset of welding current induces voltage and current in 1,000-turn, 28-gauge copper-wire coil. Single-transistor amplifier amplifies induced current, energizing light-emitting diode (LED) connected to collector of transistor. Light from LED gives simple, direct indication of welding current.

Preventing Contamination In Electron-Beam Welds

Simple expedient eliminates time-consuming, expensive manual hand grinding. Use of groove and backup tube greatly reduces postweld cleanup in some electron-beam welding operations. Tube-backup method developed for titanium parts, configurations of which prevents use of solid-block backup. In new welding configuration, tube inserted in groove to prevent contact between alumina beads and molten weld root. When welding complete and beads and tube removed, only minor spatter remains and is ground away easily.

Weld-Bead Shaver

Hand-held power tool shaves excess metal from inside circumference of welded duct. Removes excess metal deposited by penetration of tungsten/inert-gas weld or by spatter from electron-beam weld. Produces smooth transition across joint. Easier to use and not prone to overshaving. Also cuts faster, removing 35 in. (89 cm) of weld bead per hour.

Borescope Aids Welding In Confined Spaces

Welding torch holds video borescope to give operator view of workpiece in enclosed space. Operator sees clear, magnified image on video monitor and manipulates torch accordingly, despite visual obstruction presented by enclosure. Tinted shield tilted up while torch being positioned, then down to block excess light during welding. Reduces welding time by 50 percent, and increases quality of weld substantially.

Trailer shield assembly for a welding torch

This invention relates generally to trailer shields for gas shielded arc welding torches, and more particularly to a trailer shield assembly provided with a shield gas manifold for providing an even dispersion of shield gas to the interior of the shield assembly, which generally encloses a joint being welded and a welding trailing portion of hot welded metal. The novelty of the invention lies in providing trailer shield with a manifold tube having a plurality of openings from which shield gas is distributed. A gas manifold region ahead of the torch is also provided with shield gas from a tube to protect metal preheated by the torch. Further novelty lies in constructing portions of sides and housing and portions of side walls of the guide of stainless steel screen having a tight mesh.

Preliminary study on pressure brazing and diffusion welding of Nb-1Zr to Inconel 718

Future space power systems may include Nb-1Zr/Inconel 718 dissimilar metal joints for operation at 1000 K for 60,000 h. The serviceability of pressure-brazed and diffusion-welded joints was investigated. Ni-based metallic glass foil filler metals were used for brazing. Ni and Fe foils were used as diffusion welding inter-layers. Joint soundness was determined by metallographic examination in the as-brazed and as-welded condition, after aging at 1000 K, and after thermal cycling. Brazed joints thermally cycled in the as-brazed condition and diffusion-welded joints were unsatisfactory because of cracking problems. Brazed joints may meet the service requirements if the joints are aged at 1000 K prior to thermal cycling.
