A study of passive microwave techniques applied to geologic problems

Passive microwave techniques were applied to geologic problems, in order to establish the microwave properties of representative rocks and minerals, and to examine the feasibility of using microwave radiometry for geologic mapping problems. A review of microwave pertaining to geology was conducted, coupled with laboratory and field investigations of the microwave emission characteristics of various geologic features. The laboratory studies consisted of dielectric constant measurements of rocks and minerals. A majority of field investigations conducted in the western United States, involved the microwave emission charateristics of rock types, and a portion of the study was concerned with microwave properties of mineralized areas. Experiments were also conducted in the vicinity of a coal seam fire in Colorado and across the San Andreas Fault Zone near the Salton Sea, in Southern California.

Saturn S-2 problem resolution history report

A summary of S-2 Program problems and the solutions that were implemented is presented. The problems occurred during a period starting with the initial design concepts and continuing through the launch of the tenth S-2 flight stage information is from nine separate disciplines: design, facilities, logistics, manufacturing, material, program management, quality assurance, safety, and tests.

The application of generalized, cyclic, and modified numerical integration algorithms to problems of satellite orbit computation

Generalized, cyclic, and modified multistep numerical integration methods are developed and evaluated for application to problems of satellite orbit computation. Generalized methods are compared with the presently utilized Cowell methods; new cyclic methods are developed for special second-order differential equations; and several modified methods are developed and applied to orbit computation problems. Special computer programs were written to generate coefficients for these methods, and subroutines were written which allow use of these methods with NASA's GEOSTAR computer program.

An integral equation approach to the strip problem

A semi-infinite strip held rigidly on its short end is considered. Loads in the strip at infinity (far away from the fixed end) are prescribed. Integral transform technique is used to provide an exact formulation of the problem in terms of a singular integral equation. Stress singularity at the strip corner is obtained from the singular integral equation which is then solved numerically. Stresses along the rigid end are determined and the effect of the material properties on the stress intensity factor is presented. The method can also be applied to the problem of a laminate composite with a flat inclusion normal to the interfaces.

A study of nozzle and ejector flow problems by the method of integral relations

The application of the method of integral relations to nozzle and ejector flow problems was examined. For nozzle flow problems, the general formulation is that the approaching flow may be rotational. Particular attention was given to the phenomenon of choking under nonuniform flow conditions. Numerical integration of the governing ordinary differential equations was also investigated. This scheme of analysis was also applied to study the interacting flow field within an ejector system.

Corrosion and stress corrosion problems associated with the Space Shuttle.

The problems encountered and the methods used to prevent corrosion and stress corrosion cracking on current space vehicles and aircraft are discussed. Preventing these problems on the Space Shuttle, in particular, by properly using materials that are highly resistant to this phenomenon, is examined in detail.

Acquisition and performance of a problem-solving skill.

The acquisition of skill in the performance of a three-phase code transformation task (3P-COTRAN) was studied with 20 subjects who solved 27 3P-COTRAN problems during each of 8 successive sessions. The purpose of the study was to determine the changes in the 3P-COTRAN factor structure resulting from practice, the distribution of practice-related gains in performance over the nine measures of the five 3P-COTRAN factors, and the effects of transformation complexities on the 3P-COTRAN performance of subjects. A significant performance gain due to practice was observed, with improvements in speed continuing even when accuracy reached asymptotic levels. Transformation complexity showed no effect on early performances but the 3- and 4-element transformations were solved quicker than the 5-element transformation in the problem-solving Phase III of later skilled performances.

The role and use of the stochastic linear-quadratic-Gaussian problem in control system design.

The role of the linear-quadratic stochastic control problem in engineering design is reviewed in tutorial fashion. The design approach is motivated by considering the control of a nonlinear uncertain plant about a desired input-output response. It is demonstrated how a design philosophy based on (1) deterministic perturbation control, (2) stochastic state estimation, and (3) linearized stochastic control leads to an overall closed-loop control system. The emphasis of the paper is on the philosophy of the design process, the modeling issue, and the formulation of the problem; the results are given for the sake of completeness, but no proofs are included. The systematic off-line nature of the design process is stressed throughout.
