Commissioning of the Mu2e Data AcQuisition System and the Vertical Slice Test of the Straw Tracker

The report discusses the commissioning of the DAQ system of the Mu2e experiment. We studied how the tracker works and especially the tracker readout. We used a generator to send pulses and we tried to understand the output and non-output of the DTC, in order to validate the event and run format and all the failure modes. In section one, we describe Charged Lepton Flavour Violation, the main purpose of Mu2e, in section two we describe Mu2e experiment. Section three presents the tracker description and readout, meanwhile section four the DAQ system and event building. In section five, we start explaining the analysis we have done on events and all the failure modes we discovered. In section six, we have done an analysis of the logger and boardreader rate, we validated the generator frequency in section seven and studied the number of hits in function of the channel number in section eight. To conclude we investigated the channel to channel time differences in section nine and in section ten we explain our Monte Carlo simulation, reproducing ROCs readout.

Swarm autonomic agents with self-destruct capability

Systems, methods and apparatus are provided through which in some embodiments an autonomic entity manages a system by generating one or more stay alive signals based on the functioning status and operating state of the system. In some embodiments, an evolvable synthetic neural system is operably coupled to one or more evolvable synthetic neural systems in a hierarchy. The evolvable neural interface receives and generates heartbeat monitor signals and pulse monitor signals that are used to generate a stay alive signal that is used to manage the operations of the synthetic neural system. In another embodiment an asynchronous Alice signal (Autonomic license) requiring valid credentials of an anonymous autonomous agent is initiated. An unsatisfactory Alice exchange may lead to self-destruction of the anonymous autonomous agent for self-protection.

Time reflection of light from a quantum perspective and vacuum entanglement

If a boundary between two static media is moving with a constant superluminal velocity, or there is a sudden change of the refractive index with time, this yields generation of entangled pairs of photons out of vacuum propagating in the opposite directions. Here we show that during this process, entanglement of Minkowski vacuum is transferred to the entanglement of the generated photon pairs. If initially an electromagnetic pulse is present in the medium the photon generation is stimulated into the pulse mode, and since photons are created as entangled pairs the counter-propagating photon partners produce a pulse moving in the opposite direction, which is known as time reflection. Thus, time reflection occurs due to stimulated generation of the entangled photon pairs out of entangled vacuum and no photons in the original pulse are in fact being reflected. This is different from the mechanism of light reflection from spatial inhomogeneities for which no photons are generated.

Shaping Micro-Bunched Electron Beams for Compact X-ray Free-Electron Lasers with Transverse Gradient Undulators

Laser-modulator-based micro-bunching of electron beams has been applied to many novel operating modes of X-ray free-electron lasers from harmonic generation to attosecond pulse production. Recently, it was also identified as a key enabling technology for the production of a compact XFEL driven by a relatively low-energy beam. In traditional laser modulator schemes with low-energy and high-current bunches, collective effects limit the possible working points that can be employed, and thus it is difficult to achieve optimal XFEL performance. We propose to utilize transverse longitudinal coupling in a transverse gradient undulator (TGU) to shape micro-bunched electron beams so as to optimize their performance in a compact X-ray free-electron laser. We show that a TGU added to a conventional laser modulator stage enables much more flexibility in the design, allowing one to generate longer micro-bunches less subject to slippage effects and even lower the slice emittance of the micro-bunches. We present a theoretical analysis of laser-based micro-bunching with an added TGU, simulation of compression with collective effects in such systems, and finally XFEL simulations demonstrating the gains in peak power enabled by the TGU. Although we focus on the application to compact XFELs, what we propose is a general phase space manipulation that may find utility in other applications as well.

A study of sacrificial mirrors for use prior to a laser wakefield accelerator driven by the Z-Petawatt laser

Many experiments at Sandia’s Z Pulsed Power Facility require x-ray backlighting diagnostics to understand experiment performance. Due to limitations in present-day source/detection modalities, most x-ray diagnostics at Z are restricted to photon energies <20 keV, ultimately limiting the density, amount, and atomic number of targets diagnosable in experiments. These limitations force the use of low-Z materials like Beryllium, and they prevent acquisition of important backlighting data for materials/densities that are opaque to soft x-rays and where background emission from the Z load and transmission lines overwhelm diagnostics. In this LDRD project, we have investigated the design and development of a laser wakefield acceleration platform driven by the Z-Petawatt laser – a platform that would enable the generation of a pulsed, collimated beam of high energy x-rays up to 100 keV. Geometrical considerations for implementation on the Z Machine require the use of sacrificial mirrors, which have been tested in offline experiments in the Chama target chamber in building 983. Our results suggest the use of sacrificial mirrors would not necessarily inhibit the laser wakefield x-ray process, particularly with the benefits stemming from planned laser upgrades. These conclusions support the continuation of laser wakefield source research and the development of the necessary infrastructure to deliver the Z-Petawatt laser to the Z center section along the appropriate lines of sight. Ultimately, this new capability will provide unprecedented views through dense states of matter, enabling the use of previously incompatible target materials/designs, and uncovering a new set of observables accessible through diffraction and spectroscopy in the hard x-ray regime. These will amplify the data return on precious Z shots and enhance Sandia’s ability to investigate fundamental physics in support of national security.

The role of focusing geometry in MeV x-ray production from petawatt laser–solid interaction

Relativistic laser–plasma interactions provide a compact and flexible route to generating bright, ultrashort pulses of MeV x rays, with applications in high-energy density science, nuclear physics, and radiography. Despite extensive study of intensity scaling in laser-driven electron acceleration, the role of focusing geometry and focal-volume effects in MeV radiation production remains insufficiently understood. Here, we present experimental and kinetic simulation results from the Texas Petawatt Laser (120 J, 140 fs) in which the focusing geometry (f/3 or f/1.5) is varied, while the laser energy and pulse duration are fixed. Experimentally, the f/3 geometry produces approximately three times more MeV radiation than the f/1.5 geometry, despite its twofold lower nominal vacuum intensity. This result is based on the time-integrated radiation per unit solid angle, as measured along the diagnostic line of sight. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations reproduce this trend when a modest (10s of μm) effective focal plane shift is introduced, demonstrating that relativistic laser–plasma coupling is highly sensitive to focal geometry in the presence of a preplasma. This behavior is consistent with differences in interaction length and effective intensity at the critical surface between the two configurations. The sensitivity of the tightly focused f/1.5 configuration ($z_R ≈$⁠ 5 μ m) reflects the combined influence of thermal lensing and an extended preplasma, while the f/3 geometry (⁠$z_R ≈$ 80 μ m) remains comparatively robust. These results demonstrate a breakdown of conventional intensity scaling and identify focusing geometry as a critical control parameter for MeV electron and x-ray generation at petawatt powers. Implications for laser–plasma-based radiographic facilities are also discussed.

Temporal prepulse contrast degradation in high-intensity CPA lasers from anisotropy of amplifier gain media

Here, we present a study of the temporal pre-pulse contrast degradation of high focused intensity pulses produced in CPA laser systems due to imperfections in amplifier design, alignment of amplifier components, and crystal inhomogeneity. Using an extended cross-polarized imaging technique, we demonstrate the presence of multiple crystal domains inside Ti:sapphire slabs with ≈10 cm diameter. Furthermore, the results of our numerical calculations show that crystalline c-axis orientation inhomogeneity caused by these crystal domains can lead to generation of pre-pulses with relative contrast >10 -10 within several picoseconds before the main pulse. In a multiple-slab amplifier head configuration sometimes used in high repetition rate systems, the misalignment of the amplifier slabs crystalline c-axes with respect to each other can lead to the generation of pre-pulses with relative contrast as high as 10 -6 , depending on the magnitude of misalignment.

Solid state core-exciton dynamics in NaCl observed by tabletop attosecond four-wave mixing spectroscopy

Nonlinear wave mixing in solids with ultrafast x-rays can provide insight into complex electronic dynamics of materials. Here, tabletop-based attosecond noncollinear four-wave mixing (FWM) spectroscopy using one extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse from high harmonic generation and two separately timed few-cycle near-infrared (NIR) pulses characterizes the dynamics of the Na + L 2,3 edge core-excitons in NaCl around 33.5 eV. An inhomogeneous distribution of core-excitons underlying the well-known doublet absorption of the Na+ Γ point core-exciton spectrum is deconvoluted by the resonance-enhanced nonlinear wave mixing spectroscopy. In addition, other dark excitonic states that are coupled to the XUV-allowed levels by the NIR pulses are characterized spectrally and temporally. Approximately <10fs coherence lifetimes of the core-exciton states are observed. Furthermore, the core-excitonic properties are discussed in the context of strong electron-hole exchange interactions, electron-electron correlation, and electron-phonon broadening. This investigation successfully indicates that tabletop attosecond FWM spectroscopies represent a viable technique for time-resolved solid state measurements.

Collinear dual-pulse laser optical breakdown and energy deposition

A non-equilibrium model for laser-generated plasmas is used to represent collinear dual nano-second-pulse interactions. In the specific case considered, the breakdown is initiated with an ultraviolet (UV) laser pulse at 266 nm, which pre-ionizes the gas, and it is followed by a near-infrared (NIR) pulse at 1064 nm, which deposits significant energy into the ionized mixture. The model is validated against corresponding experiments, and simulation results are interrogated to understand key features of the plasma-kernel dynamics and the post-discharge hydrodynamics. The hydrodynamics of the non-equilibrium plasma is governed by the two-temperature Navier–Stokes equations accounting for both multiphoton ionization and inverse bremsstrahlung. The interaction between the laser beam and the plasma is modeled based on the radiative transfer equation. The temporal and spatial offsets of the two pulses can generate ionization kernels with different topology and dynamics. It is shown that the UV pre-ionization pulse can tailor the plasma region, leading to a larger ionized volume than would occur for a single-pulse breakdown, and it increases the efficiency of the energy deposition for the following NIR discharge. Vorticity in the early post-discharge phase is generated via baroclinic torque from the misalignment of the radial gradient of density (sudden gas expansion) and the strong pressure gradient (initiated by energy deposition from the laser beam). It is predicted that the collinear dual pulse can be designed to specify the plasma kernel size, shape, and maximum temperature in the breakdown phase, and the initial post-breakdown vorticity and plasma-core decay.

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at the European Spallation Source

The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently well on its way to completion, will soon provide the most intense neutron beams for multi-disciplinary science. Fortuitously, it will also generate the largest pulsed neutrino flux suitable for the detection of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CEνNS), a process recently measured for the first time at ORNL’s Spallation Neutron Source. We describe innovative detector technologies maximally able to profit from the order-of-magnitude increase in neutrino flux provided by the ESS, along with their sensitivity to a rich particle physics phenomenology accessible through high-statistics, precision CEνNS measurements.

Defect characterization and charge transport measurements in high-resolution Ni/n-4H-SiC Schottky barrier radiation detectors fabricated on 250 μ m epitaxial layers

Advances in the growth processes of 4H-SiC epitaxial layers have led to the continued expansion of epilayer thickness, allowing for the detection of more penetrative radioactive particles. In this work, we report the fabrication and characterization of high-resolution Schottky barrier radiation detectors on 250 μm thick n-type 4H-SiC epitaxial layers, the highest reported thickness to date. Several 8 × 8 mm 2 detectors were fabricated from a diced 100 mm diameter 4H-SiC epitaxial wafer grown on a conductive 4H-SiC substrate with a mean micropipe density of 0.11 cm -2 From the Mott–Schottky plots, the effective doping concentration was found to be in the range (0.95–1.85) × 10 14 cm -3 , implying that full depletion could be achieved at ~5.7 kV (0.5 MV/cm at the interface). The current-voltage characteristics demonstrated consistently low leakage current densities of 1–3 nA/cm 2 at a reverse bias of -800 V. This resulted in the pulse-height spectra generated using a 241Am alpha source (5486 keV) manifesting an energy resolution of less than 0.5% full width at half maximum (FWHM) for all the detectors at -200 V. The charge collection efficiencies (CCEs) were measured to be 98–99% with no discernable correlation to the energy resolution. A drift-diffusion model fit to the variation of CCE as a function of bias voltage, revealed a minority carrier diffusion length of ~10 μm. Deep level transient spectroscopy measurements on the best resolution detector revealed that the excellent performance was the result of having ultralow concentrations of the order of 1011 cm-3 lifetime limiting defects—Z 1/2 and EH 6/7 .

Direct evidence of the effect of a moderate external magnetic field on stimulated Raman scattering in the kinetic regime

We present results from an experiment carried out at the OMEGA-EP laser facility that investigated the effect of a perpendicular magnetic field on stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and report the first direct measurement of magnetic mitigation of SRS. A 13-T magnetic field generated by pulsed-power coils was imposed on a gas jet plasma, and a novel three-picket interaction beam was used to explore SRS reflectivity for several plasma conditions within single shots. The time-resolved backscattered light shows that SRS was mitigated by the external 13-T magnetic field in the kinetic regime (kλ D ∼ 0.3, where k is the electron plasma wave's wavenumber and λ D is electron Debye length) and at a density of n e /n cr ∼ 0.10. On the other hand, we also measured an enhancement of SRS reflectivity at lower density (n e /n cr < 0.08). We discuss experimental results in the context of magnetohydrodynamic and particle-in-cell simulations that scan SRS dynamics for a variety of plasma conditions. While the experimental evidence of SRS mitigation validates prior work on the kinetic simulation of SRS in an external magnetic field, we also find that other mechanisms such as SRS rescatter can lead to an enhancement of measured SRS reflectivity in simulations of parameters relevant to our experiment.

Cryogenically enhanced quasi-optical resonator for megawatt pulsed millimeter-wave sources

We report the design, cryogenic optimization, and performance modeling of a compact quasi-optical ring resonator intended to compress microwaves pulses at 170 and 250 GHz to the megawatt level. By combining ultra-low-loss CVD diamond and gold-doped silicon wafers with high-RRR copper mirrors, the calculated unloaded quality factor exceeds 4.3 × 10 5 at 20 K and yields simulated gains up to $\mathscr{G}$ = 4.1 × 10 3 . Coupling the resonator with a laser-driven semiconductor switch described by an extended Vogel model shows that 1 MW, nanosecond pulses can be generated from only 445 W of microwave drive power while dissipating 272 W into the cryostat. A practical cooling architecture using two Gifford–McMahon stages (20 and 80 K) is proposed, demonstrating that high-repetition-rate (10–20 kHz) operation is feasible with commercially available cryocoolers. The results outline a clear path toward cost-effective, table-top sources for extreme-ultraviolet lithography, dynamic nuclear polarization, and fusion systems.

First demonstration of a cryocooler conduction cooled superconducting radiofrequency cavity operating at practical cw accelerating gradients

Abstract We demonstrate practical accelerating gradients on a superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) accelerator cavity with cryocooler conduction cooling, a cooling technique that does not involve the complexities of the conventional liquid helium bath. A design is first presented that enables conduction cooling an elliptical-cell SRF cavity. Implementing this design, a single cell 650 MHz Nb 3 Sn cavity coupled using high purity aluminum thermal links to a 4 K pulse tube cryocooler generated accelerating gradients up to 6.6 MV m −1 at 100% duty cycle. The experiments were carried out with the cavity-cryocooler assembly in a simple vacuum vessel, completely free of circulating liquid cryogens. We anticipate that this cryocooling technique will make the SRF technology accessible to interested accelerator researchers who lack access to full-stack helium cryogenic systems. Furthermore, the technique can lead to SRF based compact sources of high average power electron beams for environmental protection and industrial applications. A concept of such an SRF compact accelerator is presented.

Characterization of the CMS Endcap Timing Layer readout chip prototype with charge injection

We present the characterization of a readout Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) for the CMS Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) of the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade with charge injection. The ASIC, named ETROC and developed in a 65 nm CMOS technology, reads out a 16× 16 pixel matrix of the Low-Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD). The jitter contribution from ETROC is required to be below 40 ps to achieve the 50 ps overall time resolution per hit. The analog readout circuits in ETROC consist of the preamplifier and the discriminator. The preamplifier handles the LGAD charge signal with the most probable value of around 15 fC. The discriminator generates the digital pulse, which provides the Time-Of-Arrival (TOA, leading edge) and Time-Over-Threshold (TOT, pulse width) information. The prototype of ETROC (ETROC0) that implements a single channel of analog readout circuits has been evaluated with charge injection. The jitter of the analog readout circuits, measured from the discriminator's leading edge, is better than 16 ps for a charge larger than 15 fC with the sensor capacitance. The time walk resulting from different pulse heights can be corrected using the TOT measurement. The time resolution distribution has a standard deviation of 29 ps after the time-walk correction from the charge injection. At room temperature, the preamplifier's power consumption is measured to be 0.74 mW and 1.53 mW per pixel in the low- and high-power mode, respectively. Finally, the measured power consumption of the discriminator is 0.84 mW per pixel. With the ASIC alone or the LGAD sensor, The characterization performances fulfill the ETL's challenging requirements.

Insights into the laser-assisted photoelectric effect from solid-state surfaces

Photoemission from a solid surface provides a wealth of information about its electronic structure and dynamic evolution. Ultrafast pump-probe experiments offer real-time access to photon-surface interactions and the resulting electron dynamics. Here, we present a femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy study of laser-assisted photoemission (LAPE) from two different metal surfaces, tungsten and platinum. Utilizing synchronized IR laser and x-ray pulses, photoelectron sideband generation up to the sixth order is observed. A significant material-dependent variation of the LAPE response has not been predicted by previous theoretical models, to the best of our knowledge. The observed phenomena are semiquantitatively reproduced by considering distinct dynamic dielectric responses of the two materials. In conclusion, these findings provide a deeper understanding of the LAPE process and insights into the dynamic interplay between optical laser fields and metal surfaces.

A Generic Multivector Model Predictive Control With Symmetric Pulse Pattern for Hybrid Multilevel Converters

This article presents a generic multivector model predictive control (MV-MPC) method that has the potential to be applied to all hybrid multilevel converters (HMCs). It first locates the reference voltage vector in the 120° oblique coordinate to select the three adjacent voltage vectors to be applied over one control cycle. Then, the current tracking is guaranteed through duty cycle optimization and dc capacitor voltages are balanced by evaluating possible switching sequences that belong to the voltage vectors with optimal duty cycles. At last, the optimal switching sequence with a symmetric five- or seven-segment pulse pattern is generated using an external modulator. Here, the proposed generic MV-MPC can significantly improve the quality of the output current, while achieving a constant equivalent switching frequency at the same time. Experimental studies on an all silicon carbide HMC prototype, i.e., an active neutral point clamped converter with cascaded H-bridge, are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed MV-MPC strategy.
