Damper design from a structural engineer's point of view

A nonlinear structural analysis, employing the nonlinear damper characteristics obtained from a damper test, was successfully performed on the Mariner spacecraft's solar-panel system, and the result was compared with results from a system-level spacecraft test in which some solar-panel tip dampers bottomed at a certain frequency. The analysis showed that the damper bottoming was attributable to a jump phenomenon that can result when a damper's response is not single-valued at some frequency.

The geomagnetically trapped radiation environment: A radiological point of view

The regions of naturally occurring, geomagnetically trapped radiation are briefly reviewed in terms of physical parameters such as; particle types, fluxes, spectrums, and spatial distributions. The major emphasis is placed upon a description of this environment in terms of the radiobiologically relevant parameters of absorbed dose and dose-rate and a discussion of the radiological implications in terms of the possible impact on space vehicle design and mission planning.

A new view of the ring current

Observations of the quiet time ring current intensity and distribution in the magnetosphere by OGO-3 and OGO-5 are given. The differences in quiet time ring currents and ring currents observed during magnetic storms are discussed.

The 1969 Mariner view of Mars.

Summary of the 1969 Mariner mission, with emphasis on the planetary encounter and with discussion of the various scientific experiments conducted. Attention is also given to the results as they have been analyzed to date in terms of what they can tell about the atmosphere, surface, and other aspects of Mars. The mission concentrated on obtaining information that would set the basis for experiments on future missions, particularly those relevant to the search for extraterrestrial life. Details of the experimental apparatus are given.
