Assessing the Impact of Lubrication on Efficiency and Life Cycle Economics of the US Wind Turbine Fleet: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

As with any mechanical system, lubrication plays a key role in the performance of wind turbines used to generate electricity. The lubricant design offers a way to optimize the competing requirements of efficiency, component reliability, and maintenance strategy. This project will estimate the impact of improved lubrication on the levelized cost of energy of the US wind turbine fleet as a means of identifying opportunities for disruptive innovation or system-level optimization. The models developed will provide a clear understanding of the benefits and potential for advanced lubrication of wind turbines. The project will enable identification of high value targets for wind turbine component suppliers and a roadmap that highlights where the greatest return on technology investment can be achieved. This will promote efficient resource allocation in areas of new technology development.

Floating Offshore Wind US Manufacturing and Commercialization: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

NREL assessed the supply chain and workforce considerations for the OCG-Wind floater technology, a floating semi-submersible offshore wind substructure, as well sharing vessel needs to inform their installation strategy. This technical assistance was in support of the FLoating Offshore Wind ReadINess (FLOWIN) Prize Phase 2 submission. NREL provided an assessment of domestic supplier capabilities for the main components of their floating offshore wind platform design and analyzed US regional and national supply chain constraints and gaps. Thirteen interviews with companies including steel distributors, forges, foundries, ports, large component fabricators, subcomponent fabricators, and secondary suppliers provided key insights such as 1) assembly ports are the key infrastructure barrier standing in the way of unlocking the domestic assembly and component fabrication for steel-based FOW platforms, 2) domestic steel producers can supply the types and quantities of steel necessary for FOW platforms, and 3) coordination between stakeholders will be a vital part of successfully developing the supply chain and infrastructure needed to domestically produce FOW platforms. In the workforce assessment, NREL documented a step-by-step approach to conduct a place-based assessment of the foundational workforce consideration for recruiting, upskilling, and retaining a workforce, such as supportive local and state policy, nearby education and training programs, and existing relevant industry. This approach was applied to Tacoma, Washington. Tacoma was indicated to have the potential be a successful location for fabrication and assembly of floating offshore wind energy in terms of workforce development. To share data on vessel requirements to install the OCG-Wind floater, NREL compiled resources that help answer the questions related to anchor handling tug vessels, shared a database of cable laying vessels, and answered questions on complying with the Jones Act.

Innovative Deep-Water Mooring Systems for Floating Wind Farms (DeepFarm): Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

The DeepFarm project, led by Principle Power Inc (PPI), focused on design, modeling and development of innovative mooring and anchoring systems for semi-submersible floating wind turbine platforms in a deep water, commercial-size wind farm. It explored the possibility of sharing anchors amongst the floating platforms within the farm, and considers site conditions representative of the West Coast and Hawaii, with a variety of water depths, as case studies to ensure that the sensitivity to water depth and park size are well understood. NREL and PPI worked together to develop and apply NREL's computational tools for modeling floating wind farm dynamics and costs.

Gravity Well Commercial Economics Assessment: Potential Revenue and Cost: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

In the Gravity Well Revenue Study, we evaluate the potential revenue from energy storage using historical energy-only electricity prices, forward-looking projections of hourly electricity prices, and actual reported revenue. This analysis examines the impact of storage duration and round-trip efficiency, as well as the location of the storage, on storage revenue within the current and projected U.S. power system. We also investigated the impact of round-trip efficiency on storage revenue. We found that the relationship between storage revenue and round-trip efficiency is nonlinear. The value of improved round-trip efficiency declines as round-trip efficiency increases. In the Gravity Well Future Cost Study, we applied learning curves to predict the future cost trajectory of Gravity Wells (GrWs). Two types of analysis were implemented. The first was a bottom-up analysis that used historical learning rates for cost components, such as motors and gearboxes, and cost categories (e.g., engineering and design, etc.) to determine the learning-by-doing based single-factor learning curve. The single factor learning curve expresses the relationship between the cost of GrW and the number of units deployed (or the cumulative capacity). In the second analysis, we predicted future GrW costs via a top-down approach. This approach accounts for historical cost trends in other renewable energy and storage technologies, which have similarities with GrWs. Using a multifactor learning curve that accounts for both intrinsic (cumulative capacity) and extrinsic (the elasticity in the price of steel) factors, we estimated the future cost of GrWs.

Dynamic Wind Loading on Compliant, Floating PV Arrays: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

PV panels are subjected to wind loads during normal outdoor operation, where th wind speed, wind direction, panel angle, and array layout play a large role in the overall loading magnitude. For floating PV systems, where panels are installed on floating rafts, these forces can lead to a dynamic displacement of the raft and mounted PV hardware. The Contractor and Participant will perform fluid-structure interaction simulations of this phenomenon for a variety of wind speeds, directions, and panel angles to characterize these forces and help design mooring/tethering lines to resist and anchor raft movement.
