SULI Project Report: Mu2e otsdaq Documentation and Analytics

This report outlines the history of the CLFV puzzle, gives an overview of the Mu2e Experiment, and details the results of the DOE (Department of Energy)-funded SULI (Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship) research completed over the summer 2024 on site at Fermilab. The project focused on the otsdaq software responsible for data acquisition. The project included drafting updated documentation for new users, including new procedures relevant for the Alma- Linux 9 operating system update, and the UPS package managing system replacement with Spack (scientific software package manager). A new art module (ReadTriggerCounts) to track trigger rates was created, with compatibility to be displayed via a Grafana server. The author also assisted in calorimeter cable installation in the detector hall.

Example Alternative Compliance Waiver Application: EPAct State and Alternative Provider Fleet Program Guidance Document

The U.S. Department of Energy developed an electronic planning spreadsheet to facilitate fleets' preparation of a complete Alternative Compliance (AC) waiver application. All fleets that participate in AC are encouraged to use the spreadsheet. The example in this guidance document includes all components that must be included in a fleet’s AC waiver application.

SG50 Data-format Specifications Document for the Automatically Readable, Comprehensive, and Curated Experimental Reaction Database MEDUSAL

The aim of this document is to lay out a first draft of the specifications for the MEDUSAL database (Machine-readable Experimental Data User App & Library) that is being described by OECD/NEA/WPEC SG-50. The EXFOR database (Otuka et al., 2014) has a format that is based on code-value pairs, and a significant portion of the information in the EXFOR entry is contained in free text sections. Several high-level requirements for the MEDUSAL database, as laid out in the Use Cases and Requirements Working Paper (citation), relate to the definition of the specifications

SG50 Data-format Requirement Document for an Automatically Readable, Comprehensive and Curated Experimental Reaction Database MEDUSA

This report constitutes the requirement document that guides the development of the experimental reaction database, MEDUSAL (Machine-readable Experimental Data User App & Library), created by OECD/NEA/WPEC SubGroup 50. Experimental reaction data are usually stored in the EXFOR library in EXFOR format. With MEDUSAL, the WPEC sub-group 50 wants to go beyond the EXFOR format and database to generate a library that is (a) automatically readable, (b) comprehensive, and (c) curated.

The Department of Energy and IDEA team up to document industry best practices

This article describes a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Energy and the International District Energy Association (IDEA) to document best practices in district energy systems. The initiative focuses on analyzing real-world performance data and highlighting effective strategies for improving efficiency, integrating renewable energy, and supporting decarbonization efforts. It highlights case studies from the University of California, Davis, and Princeton University to show how long-term master planning, phased project implementation, and strong financial analysis can drive successful transitions to more sustainable energy systems. U.C. Davis emphasizes incremental, results-driven planning and pilot projects, while Princeton focuses on aligning climate goals with financially viable infrastructure investments and life-cycle cost analysis. Overall, the article demonstrates that combining strategic planning, data-driven decision-making, and financial accountability is essential for advancing sustainable district energy systems.

Documentation of the Recirculation in a Closed-Chamber Rotor Hover Test

A rotor hover test was performed inside the JPL 25-foot-diameter Space Simulator. The 40-inch-diameter rotor was tested at two locations in the chamber-on the chamber centerline and 2m off-axis. The rotor was tested in both upright and inverted configurations for 500 < RPM < 2000. Fluorescent tufts were used to identify regions of recirculation. Velocities on the entrainment side of the rotor were measured. Tabulated values for the mean entrainment velocity components and the corresponding root mean square velocity fluctuations are provided. Unsteady velocity measurements provide a description of the turbulence ingested into the rotor plane and quantify the unsteady velocity field that the Mars Scout Helicopter can expect to encounter during free flight inside the Space Simulator.

Importance of Sample Handling and Preparation for Surface Analysis: A Summary of ISO Standard 20579 Part 1, Documenting and Reporting the Handling of Specimens Prior to Analysis

Reliable and reproducible analysis of surfaces is critically dependent on how samples have been collected, handled, and prepared before analysis. Although there are important, well-established general guidelines to minimize unintended alteration of the surfaces to be analyzed, specific handling steps depend on the nature of the samples and information desired. Assessments of the validity and reliability of the results require adequate information about sampling, handling, and processing. ISO standard 20579 part 1 describes the information to be recorded and reported for samples that are prepared or submitted for surface analysis. This paper summarizes elements of the standard, which includes annexes that justify and inform the sample handling processes. Also included is a checklist of information that needs to be recorded and reported and an appendix containing an example of a form that might be used to report the information.

Analysis of digitized herbarium records and community science observations provides a glimpse of downy mildew species diversity of North America, reveals potentially undescribed species, and documents the need for continued digitization and collecting

Downy mildew diseases caused by Peronosporaceae cause significant crop losses globally, with several emerging and resurgent threats in recent decades. Biodiversity data from digitized herbarium specimens provide an opportunity to develop a baseline census of species diversity, however, these resources may represent aggregations of nonrandom and opportunistic collecting efforts, which could lead to spurious results. Here, the MyCoPortal census of digitized herbarium records for downy mildew species collected from North America 1800 to present were analyzed. From 9838 unique records, 196 species were identified, reflecting ~28% of known species diversity. Temporal and geographic collecting biases were observed, with 90% of the collections made prior to 1960 and the efforts of six “super-collectors” accounting for 25% of the collections. The presence of 50–100 undescribed species in North America was inferred from the records. Together, these results highlight the need for continued downy mildew collections, taxonomic research and digitization efforts.
