Vanadium and Niobium MXenes—Bilayered V 2 O 5 Asymmetric Supercapacitors

MXenes offer high metallic conductivity and redox capacitance that are attractive for high-power, high-energy storage devices. However, they operate limitedly under high anodic potentials due to irreversible oxidation. Pairing them with oxides to design asymmetric supercapacitors may expand the voltage window and increase the energy storage capabilities. Hydrated lithium preintercalated bilayered V 2 O 5 ( δ-Li x V 2 O 5 ·nH 2 O) is attractive for aqueous energy storage due to its high Li capacity at high potentials; however, its poor cyclability remains a challenge. To overcome its limitations and achieve a wide voltage window and excellent cyclability, it is combined with V 2 C and Nb 4 C 3 MXenes. Asymmetric supercapacitors employing lithium intercalated V 2 C (Li-V 2 C) or tetramethylammonium intercalated Nb 4 C 3 (TMA-Nb 4 C 3 ) MXenes as the negative electrode, and a δ-Li x V 2 O 5 ·nH 2 O composite with carbon nanotubes as the positive electrode in 5 m LiCl electrolyte operate over wide voltage windows of 2 and 1.6 V, respectively. The latter shows remarkably high cyclability—capacitance retention of ≈95% after 10 000 cycles. Here, this work highlights the importance of selecting appropriate MXenes to achieve a wide voltage window and a long cycle life in combination with oxide anodes to demonstrate the potential of MXenes beyond Ti 3 C 2 in energy storage.

The Simulation and Design of an On-Chip Superconducting Millimetre Filter-Bank Spectrometer

Abstract Superconducting on-chip filter banks provide a scalable, space saving solution to create imaging spectrometers at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths. We present an easy to realise, lithographed superconducting filter design with a high tolerance to fabrication error. Using a capacitively coupled $$\lambda /2$$ λ / 2 microstrip resonator to define a narrow ( $$\lambda /\Delta \lambda = 300$$ λ / Δ λ = 300 ) spectral pass band, the filtered output of a given spectrometer channel directly connects to a lumped-element kinetic inductance detector. We show the tolerance analysis of our design, demonstrating $$<11\%$$ < 11 % change in filter quality factor to any one realistic fabrication error and a full filter-bank efficiency forecast to be 50% after accounting for fabrication errors and dielectric loss tangent.

Nanoparticle using parallel split rings and implementation of chain for creating Fano resonance with polarization independence for energy harvesting in mid-infrared

In optical devices, the polarization of the incident wave affects the Nano particle characteristics. Therefore, designing a polarization-independent device is significant in the process of designing optical structures. On the other hand, the concept of Fano resonance and dark mode has been utilized for achieving more energy enhancement. In this paper, we have developed a symmetrical Nano antenna by employing Fano resonance, which is independent of the incident wave polarization. The proposed Nano antenna is modified in mid infrared regime for biosensing and energy harvesting applications. The designed metamaterial antenna is made by Nano split ring resonators with etched capacitive gaps, which are utilized for concentrating energy. The introduced Nano antenna has a bright and dark mode with a weak enhancement of electric field. The effect of the incident wave polarization is investigated at wave incident angles between 0° and 45° to illustrate the independency of the polarization due to the symmetrical shape of the Nano antenna. In order to trigger the dark mode and enhance the electric field, a Nano chain is incorporated in the final structure. This arrangement has led to increasing of electric field drastically. Furthermore, the figure of merit has been calculated as an advantageous factor in sensing the surrounding materials with various refractive indices. Our findings illustrated that the chain arrangement has caused a peak in the linear form of the extinction cross section of the Nano antenna. This in turn has resulted in the appearance of Fano resonance with no impact on the resonance frequency that has been originally adjusted by capacitive gaps and inductive strips.

Microstructure and Corrosion Behavior of Cr Coating on M50 Steel Fabricated by Electrospark Deposition

Cr coatings are deposited on M50 steel by electrospark deposition with different parameters (100 V-60 μF, 100 V-90 μF, 100 V-120 μF, 150 V-60 μF, 150 V-90 μF and 150 V-120 μF). Influences of the depositing parameters on the microstructure and the corrosion behavior of the coatings were experimentally investigated. There is a linear trend of growth between the mass gain per area and the deposition cycles before reaching the maximum values. The voltage has more influence on the mass gain per area than the capacitance. The coatings display a splash-like pattern decorated with a few of micro-cracks. The micro-cracks are more sensitive to the voltage than the capacitance. The anti-corrosion ability of the coating is significantly better than the M50 steel. Local corrosion occurs in the coating when there are through-coating cracks. The coating deposited under 150 V-60 μF has the minimum defect density and the best anti-corrosion behavior.

Regulating the properties of activated carbon for supercapacitors: impact of particle size and degree of aromatization of hydrochar

Hydrochar (HC), obtained by the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of biomass, is an excellent precursor for preparing activated carbon (AC). However, the effects of the intrinsic properties of HC on the microstructure and electrochemical properties of AC are largely unknown. Here, this study investigates the impact of particle size and the degree of aromatization of in-situ HC on the microstructure and electrochemical properties of AC. Our results show that a large particle size and a high degree of aromatization help protect the HC from overactivation by ZnCl 2 , resulting in an large specific surface area (SSA > 2000 m 2 /g) and high mesopore to micropore volume ratio value ( V mes /V mic > 0.3) of the AC. Electrochemical performance measurements show a maximum specific capacitance of 218 F/g at 0.5 A/g was achieved in all samples where the AC (AC180-10 h) was prepared by activating HC180-10 h with a large size, a high degree of aromatization, and abundant surface oxygen-containing functional groups. After AC180-10 h was assembled into a supercapacitor, the specific capacitance of AC180-10 h still reached 158 F/g at 0.5 A/g, and it showed excellent cycling stability. This study advances the understanding of the impact of HC particle size and degree of aromatization on AC properties, providing new insights into tailoring HC qualities so that improving improve the properties of AC.

Gradient synthesis of carbon quantum dots and activated carbon from pulp black liquor for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and supercapacitor

Black liquor (BL) is a by-product of the chemical pulping industry and is mainly used as a low-value fuel; however, its potential to produce high-value products has not been fully exploited. In this study, a green and simple strategy is reported for the gradient production of Na + -functionalized carbon quantum dots (Na + -CQDs) for the first time, N and S co-doped CQDs (N/S-CQDs), and N and S co-doped KOH-activated carbon (N/S-KAC) from BL by dialysis, hydrothermal carbonization and activation-carbonization, respectively. Due to the good electron trapping ability, photoluminescence and promising up-conversion luminescence of CQDs, the hydrogen evolution efficiency of Na + -CQDs/TiO 2 and N/S-CQDs/TiO 2 photocatalysts was improved by 2.45 and 1.46 times, respectively, compared with pure TiO 2 . N/S-KAC with a high specific surface area of 2294 m 2 g -1 provides an excellent specific capacitance of 253 F g -1 at 0.5 A g -1 and a promising energy density of 26.92 Wh kg -1 under a power density of 566 W kg -1 for the fabricated symmetrical supercapacitor. Moreover, the electrode material has good cycling stability with a capacitance retention of ~ 93.91% after 5000 cycles. In conclusion, this pathway provides a versatile and scalable approach for the construction and co-production of nanostructured materials, photocatalysts and energy storage devices.

Framework for optimization of long-term, multi-period investment planning of integrated urban energy systems

In order to achieve stringent greenhouse gas emission reductions, a transition of our entire energy system from fossil to renewable resources needs to be designed. Such an energy transition brings two main challenges: most renewables generate variable electric energy, yet most demand is currently not electric (carrier mismatch) and does not always manifest at the same time as supply (temporal mismatch). Integrating multiple energy infrastructures can address both challenges by using the synergy between different energy carriers; building on existing infrastructure, while allowing a robust and flexible integration of the new. This paper proposes an optimization framework for long-term, multi-period investment planning of urban energy systems in an integrated manner. We formulate it as a mixed-integer linear program, combining a capacitated facility location with a multi-dimensional, capacitated network design problem. It includes generation and network expansion planning as well as interconnections between networks and storage infrastructure for each energy system. It can incorporate pathway effects like techno-economic developments, policy measures, and weather variations. The intended use is to support urban decision makers with long-term investment planning, though it can be tailored to fit other geographical or temporal scales. We demonstrate the model using two cases based on an average city in The Netherlands, which wants to reduce its CO 2 -emissions with 95% by 2050. In the first case, we include explicit carbon-emission constraints to study the effects of the carrier mismatch. In the second case, we implement interannual weather variations to analyze the temporal mismatch. The results give valuable insights into the energy transition design strategy for urban decision makers. They also show the future potential, as well as the computational challenges of the optimization framework.

Design and additive manufacturing of optimized electrodes for energy storage applications

Supercapacitors exhibit fast charging/discharging ability and have attracted considerable attention within the automotive, aerospace, and telecommunication industries. Porous carbons, prized for their high electrical conductivity and high surface area, have been attractive candidates for supercapacitor electrodes. Moving to thick electrodes is one strategy to further increase energy density due to a higher volume fraction of active material. However, thick electrodes suffer from sluggish charged species transport, which is why thin electrodes are currently favored. In this work, we investigate the use of computational optimization and additive manufacturing to design and fabricate thick porous electrodes with improved performance. Electrode performance was maximized by designing their morphologies via topology optimization and printing by projection micro stereolithography (PμSL) using commercial resin (PR48). The PR48 resin was then pyrolyzed (PR48-P) to create the final conductive electrode. The optimized PR48-P electrodes exhibited 99% improvement in capacitance compared to control electrodes printed with cubic lattice morphologies. To further improve performance, we formulated a resin combining graphene oxide (GO) and trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA). Electrodes printed with 3 wt% GO in TMPTA exhibited improved capacitance retention after pyrolysis compared to the PR48-P electrodes. Finally, this work demonstrates the benefits of using topology optimization to design electrodes and material development to improve functional properties of 3D printable electrodes.

Tailored mesoporous structures of lignin-derived nano-carbons for multiple applications

This work uses a one-step KOH activation for lignin precursors to produce ultra-high mesoporous activated carbons (ACs) with an unprecedented combination of the surface area of 3207 m 2 g -1 and mesopore ratio of 76%. The ACs are applied for supercapacitors (SCs) and methylene blue (MB) adsorption. The capacitance of the SCs in the three-electrode system reaches 812.3 F g -1 and demonstrates a remarkable maximum MB adsorption capacity of 1250 mg g -1 . By modifying the process conditions, the mesopore ratio of ACs could be controlled from 10% to 80%. Compared with one-step activation, a two-step method produced microporous carbons with a lower surface area of 1227 m 2 g -1 and a high micropore ratio of 73%. The capacitance of SCs with two-step ACs reached 228.1 F g -1 and the maximum adsorption capacity of 476.19 mg g -1 for MB adsorption. The two-step method limited the surface area but had a higher oxygen surface functionality, benefiting its electrochemical performance. A techno-economic analysis reveals that the one-step KOH activation-based process develops ACs with a minimum selling price of $7648/ton. In conclusion, this work demonstrates tuning the processing-structure-property-performance relationship of lignin-based ACs to make an economically viable domestic carbon source.

N-doped honeycomb-like porous carbon towards high-performance supercapacitor

Biomass-derived porous carbon with developed pore structure is critical to achieving high performance electrode materials. In this work, we report a grape-based honeycomb-like porous carbon (GHPC) prepared by KOH activation and carbonization, followed by N-doping (NGHPC). The obtained NGHPC exhibits a unique honeycomb-like structure with hierarchically interconnected micro/mesopores, and high specific surface area of 1268 m2/g. As a supercapacitor electrode, the NGPHC electrode exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance of 275 F/g at 0.5 A/g in a three-electrode cell. Moreover, the NGHPC//NGHPC symmetric supercapacitor displays a high energy density of 12.6 Wh/kg, and excellent cycling stability of approximately 95.2% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at 5 A/g. The excellent electrochemical performance of NGHPC is ascribed to its high specific surface area, honeycomb-like structure and high-content of pyrodinic-N (36.29%). It is believed that grape-based carbon materials show great potential as advanced electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Electromechanical memcapacitor model offering biologically plausible spiking.

In this article, we introduce a new nanoscale electromechanical device - a leaky memcapacitor - and show that it may be useful for the hardware implementation of spiking neurons. The leaky memcapacitor is a movableplate capacitor that becomes quite conductive when the plates come close to each other. The equivalent circuit of the leaky memcapacitor involves a memcapacitive and memristive system connected in parallel. In the leaky memcapacitor, resistance and capacitance depend on the same internal state variable, which is the displacement of the movable plate. We have performed a comprehensive analysis showing that several types of spiking observed in biological neurons can be implemented with the leaky memcapacitor. Significant attention is paid to the dynamic properties of the model. As in leaky memcapacitors the capacitive, leaking resistive, and reset functionalities are implemented naturally within the same device structure, their use will simplify the creation of spiking neural networks.

Effect of pinholes in Nb 4 C 3 MXene sheets on its electrochemical behavior in aqueous electrolytes

Two-dimensional (2D) niobium carbide, Nb 4 C 3 T x (T x : O, OH, and F), a representative member of the 43 MXene structural motif, has shown promising electrochemical performance in acidic electrolytes. The capacitive performance of Nb 4 C 3 T x in neutral aqueous electrolytes has been reported as moderate, but little effort has been made to improve it. In this paper, we report a method to introduce nanopores (pinholes) in Nb 4 C 3 T x MXene flakes by adjusting the etching time. The pinholes generated during the etching process improve ion diffusion pathways, which are otherwise hindered by the restacking of the 2D flakes. The “holey Nb 4 C 3 T x ” shows a 50 % improved rate capability at charge/discharge time scales of 1–2 s in 1 M Li 2 SO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 , and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 electrolytes. Our strategy of controlling the permeability of Nb 4 C 3 T x sheets can potentially be applied to other MXenes, providing guidance for improving the capacitance and rate capability of 2D materials.

Modeling the impact of GIC neutral blocking devices on distance protection relay operations for transmission lines

Geomagnetic Induced Current (GIC) blocking devices typically include a capacitor on the neutral grounding path of wye-configured transformers. This type of GIC blocking device was designed as an effective countermeasure to prevent possible damages caused on the power grid by geomagnetic storms, and by the slow-varying component of a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP). The insertion of a capacitor in the transformer neutral impedes the establishment of GICs in lines terminated with wye-connected transformer windings. With the presence of a capacitively grounded neutral, however, it becomes important to evaluate that no adverse effects are introduced in the general grid operations. In this context, this study investigates the impact of GIC neutral blocking devices on the functionality of distance protection relays for different values of transformer neutral blocking capacitors, and at different transmission line voltages. This study was conducted with a real-time simulation platform, and the simulations were performed by introducing a phase-to-ground fault at different line locations, and by measuring the apparent impedance at the protection relay location. Finally, the results indicated that, for typical values of capacitance considered for GIC neutral blocking devices, the distance protection relay model operates properly, without requiring a modification of the relay settings.

The Effect of Dopant Concentration and Annealing Treatments on N-Type Iodine Doped CdTe

We report properties of highly conducting n-type cadmium telluride single crystals doped with iodine (CdTe:I). These crystals were grown with dopant concentrations in the range of 10^17 cm-3 to 10^19 cm-3 by Modified Vertical Bridgman (MVB) melt growth. Post-growth dopant activation, including Cd annealing, Te annealing, and rapid thermal annealing (RTA), was applied to improve free carrier density. The structural, optical, and electrical properties were analyzed by Glow Discharge Mass Spectroscopy (GDMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Photoluminescence Spectroscopy (PL), optical absorption, Hall measurements, Capacitance-Voltage (CV) measurements, and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL). The results indicate that Cd annealing is the most effective activation method to get 100% donor activation (n is approximately 2 x 10^18 cm-3), which is close to the room temperature solubility limit of iodine. This leads to the lowest resistivity and the highest mobility. Moreover, this data suggests a potential role of Cd vacancy-related defects on electrical self-compensation.

Effect of oxide layer growth conditions on radiation detection performance of Ni/SiO 2 /epi-4H-SiC MOS capacitors

We report high resolution radiation detection has been demonstrated using Ni/SiO2/n-4H-SiC metal-oxidesemiconductor vertical capacitors fabricated using highly crystalline 4H-SiC epilayers. The oxide layers have been grown thermally using two different approaches: i) in-air, and ii) oxygen-ambience oxidation. The devices fabricated using the former method exhibited dark currents one order of magnitude higher than that in the latter. The observed difference has been attributed to the back-contact series resistance and capacitance. Regardless of the difference in the device parameters, detectors prepared using both of the methods exhibited very high energy resolutions of ≤ 0.5% for 5486 keV alpha particles emitted by an 241Am radioisotope. Capacitance mode deep level transient spectroscopic (DLTS) studies revealed similar type of electrically active defects along with Z1/2 and EH5 deep level defects in both the types of devices. The DLTS scans also revealed positive polarity peaks in these devices which indicate emission from minority carrier trap centers. The activation energy corresponding to the peak was found to be ~1.2 eV which has been assigned to HK3 defects responsible for hole trapping in 4H-SiC. The possibility of appearance of the positive peak due to non-negligible impedance of the back-contact has been ruled out based on the observation that the centroid of the observed peak did not change with detectors having different device parameters.

Insights into activators on biomass-derived carbon-based composites for electrochemical energy storage

Biomass-derived carbon materials are now an essential source of carbon electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors due to their cost-effectiveness and abundant heteroatom self-doping properties. When preparing porous carbon materials from biomass for supercapacitor use, the use of activators can significantly increase the specific surface area of carbon materials, enhance pore structures, introduce more heteroatoms, promote the generation of various functional groups, and play a crucial role in the capacitance performance of biomass-derived carbon materials. However, the role of activators during the activation process has been overlooked in previous work focused on improving supercapacitor capacitance performance. In addition, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews summarizing the role of activators. Therefore, this work classifies the types of activators, discusses their activation mechanisms, operability, economy, and environmental friendliness, and proposes future development directions for activators. The main mixing methods of activators and carbon materials are also demonstrated, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each method. In conclusion, this work could provide valuable insights for the development of activators for high-performance supercapacitors.
