Asymptotic behavior of vector recurrences with applications

An investigation is conducted of the behavior of a vector recurrence relation under very weak assumptions. The obtained results are used in an analysis of the iterations for nonlinear equations and a study concerning the composition of such iterations. The results can be employed in studies of one-point iterations involving the use of memory elements. Iterations for solving nonlinear equations on parallel computers can be investigated.

Maximum likelihood identifier refinements for F-8C adaptive control

Design refinement is described for baseline F-8C adaptive flight test control laws which consist of simplified quadratic-optimal model-following control structures in the pitch and lateral directional axes. The variable gains of both axes are adjusted adaptively by an explicit on-line maximum likelihood parameter identifier. The identifier, consisting of five parallel computing channels which evaluate the likelihood functions at discrete points in parameter space, operates in pitch only, using pitch rate, normal acceleration, and elevator position measurements.

Rain scavenging of solid rocket exhaust clouds

An explicit model for cloud microphysics was developed for application to the problem of co-condensation/vaporization of HCl and H2O in the presence of Al2O3 particulate nuclei. Validity of the explicit model relative to the implicit model, which has been customarily applied to atmospheric cloud studies, was demonstrated by parallel computations of H2O condensation upon (NH4)2 SO4 nuclei. A mesoscale predictive model designed to account for the impact of wet processes on atmospheric dynamics is also under development. Input data specifying the equilibrium state of HC1 and H2O vapors in contact with aqueous HC1 solutions were found to be limited, particularly in respect to temperature range.

Multipath star switch controller

Device concept permits parallel computers to scan several commonnetwork-connected data stations at maximum rate. Sequencers leap-frog to bypass ports already being serviced by another computer. Two-path system for 16-port star switch controller is cost effective if added bandwidth or increased reliability is desired. Triple-path system would be cost effective for 32-port controller.

RAMP: A fault tolerant distributed microcomputer structure for aircraft navigation and control

RAMP consists of distributed sets of parallel computers partioned on the basis of software and packaging constraints. To minimize hardware and software complexity, the processors operate asynchronously. It was shown that through the design of asymptotically stable control laws, data errors due to the asynchronism were minimized. It was further shown that by designing control laws with this property and making minor hardware modifications to the RAMP modules, the system became inherently tolerant to intermittent faults. A laboratory version of RAMP was constructed and is described in the paper along with the experimental results.

An approach to real-time simulation using parallel processing

Current applications of real-time simulations to the development of complex aircraft propulsion system controls have demonstrated the need for accurate, portable, and low-cost simulators. This paper presents a preliminary simulator design that uses a parallel computer organization to provide these features. The hardware and software for this prototype simulator are discussed. A detailed discussion of the inter-computer data transfer mechanism is also presented.

Use of a multiprocessor for control of a robotic system

In the case of complex industrial operations, the use of a multiprocessor for the control of a robotic system has a number of potential advantages over an employment of a single-processor design. In addition to the increased speed of parallel computation, multiprocessors can provide greater reliability. However, the control of a system with a multiprocessor is much more complicated, and requires resolution of a number of design criteria. The degree of coupling, the processor interconnection configuration, and the method of fault detection and correction are factors in the design of a multiprocessor which need to be considered for each particular application. In connection with the present investigation, a five-unit multiprocessor was built to experiment with the multiprocessor control of a robotic system. While the primary application of the multiprocessor involves the control of the Ohio State University (OSU) Hexapod, an 18-degree-of-freedom, motor-driven walking machine, the multiprocessor was designed to be versatile enough for a numbr of other uses.

A model for the distributed storage and processing of large arrays

A conceptual model for parallel computations on large arrays is developed. The model provides a set of language concepts appropriate for processing arrays which are generally too large to fit in the primary memories of a multiprocessor system. The semantic model is used to represent arrays on a concurrent architecture in such a way that the performance realities inherent in the distributed storage and processing can be adequately represented. An implementation of the large array concept as an Ada package is also described.

A high-order language for a system of closely coupled processing elements

The research reported in this paper was occasioned by the requirements on part of the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) project under way at NASA Lewis Research Center. The RTDS simulation scheme employs a network of CPUs running lock-step cycles in the parallel computations of jet airplane simulations. Their need for a high order language (HOL) that would allow non-experts to write simulation applications and that could be implemented on a possibly varying network can best be fulfilled by using the programming language Ada. We describe how the simulation problems can be modeled in Ada, how to map a single, multi-processing Ada program into code for individual processors, regardless of network reconfiguration, and why some Ada language features are particulary well-suited to network simulations.

Systolic VLSI for Kalman filters

A novel two-dimensional parallel computing method for real-time Kalman filtering is presented. The mathematical formulation of a Kalman filter algorithm is rearranged to be the type of Faddeev algorithm for generalizing signal processing. The data flow mapping from the Faddeev algorithm to a two-dimensional concurrent computing structure is developed. The architecture of the resulting processor cells is regular, simple, expandable, and therefore naturally suitable for VLSI chip implementation. The computing methodology and the two-dimensional systolic arrays are useful for Kalman filter applications as well as other matrix/vector based algebraic computations.

Survey of the status of finite element methods for partial differential equations

The finite element methods (FEM) have proved to be a powerful technique for the solution of boundary value problems associated with partial differential equations of either elliptic, parabolic, or hyperbolic type. They also have a good potential for utilization on parallel computers particularly in relation to the concept of domain decomposition. This report is intended as an introduction to the FEM for the nonspecialist. It contains a survey which is totally nonexhaustive, and it also contains as an illustration, a report on some new results concerning two specific applications, namely a free boundary fluid-structure interaction problem and the Euler equations for inviscid flows.

PISCES 2 users manual

PISCES 2 is a programming environment and set of extensions to Fortran 77 for parallel programming. It is intended to provide a basis for writing programs for scientific and engineering applications on parallel computers in a way that is relatively independent of the particular details of the underlying computer architecture. This user's manual provides a complete description of the PISCES 2 system as it is currently implemented on the 20 processor Flexible FLEX/32 at NASA Langley Research Center.
