Overview of Geant4 Physics

Geant4 is a powerful toolkit for simulating particle interactions across a wide energy range (0 to ~TeV). It offers comprehensive physics processes for various particle types, allowing users to define custom processes using the G4VProcess interface. Major categories include electromagnetic, hadronic, decay, parameterized processes, and transportation. A critical feature is the PhysicsList, which specifies particles and processes for simulations. Users can choose between G4VUserPhysicsList for simpler environments or G4VModularPhysicsList for more complex scenarios, leveraging pre-defined or custom G4VPhysicsConstructors. Additionally, Geant4 provides reference physics lists and the G4PhysicsListFactory for well-established applications, facilitating simulation development in diverse domains.

Distributed automatic control of technological processes in conditions of weightlessness

Some problems associated with the automatic control of liquid metal and plasma systems under conditions of weightlessness are examined, with particular reference to the problem of stability of liquid equilibrium configurations. The theoretical fundamentals of automatic control of processes in electrically conducting continuous media are outlined, and means of using electromagnetic fields for simulating technological processes in a space environment are discussed.

Ordering Unstructured Meshes for Sparse Matrix Computations on Leading Parallel Systems

The ability of computers to solve hitherto intractable problems and simulate complex processes using mathematical models makes them an indispensable part of modern science and engineering. Computer simulations of large-scale realistic applications usually require solving a set of non-linear partial differential equations (PDES) over a finite region. For example, one thrust area in the DOE Grand Challenge projects is to design future accelerators such as the SpaHation Neutron Source (SNS). Our colleagues at SLAC need to model complex RFQ cavities with large aspect ratios. Unstructured grids are currently used to resolve the small features in a large computational domain; dynamic mesh adaptation will be added in the future for additional efficiency. The PDEs for electromagnetics are discretized by the FEM method, which leads to a generalized eigenvalue problem Kx = AMx, where K and M are the stiffness and mass matrices, and are very sparse. In a typical cavity model, the number of degrees of freedom is about one million. For such large eigenproblems, direct solution techniques quickly reach the memory limits. Instead, the most widely-used methods are Krylov subspace methods, such as Lanczos or Jacobi-Davidson. In all the Krylov-based algorithms, sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SPMV) must be performed repeatedly. Therefore, the efficiency of SPMV usually determines the eigensolver speed. SPMV is also one of the most heavily used kernels in large-scale numerical simulations.

Chain Information Table Format (Version 1.1)

Materials present in a radiation environment typically undergo transmutation. The process whereby the material is transmuted is known by many terms including production-depletion, radiochemistry, activation and burn-up. In nature, this process is not limited and may encompass the entire table of isotopes. In the finite world of computer simulation, this process is bounded by the limitations of the data whereby isotopes are transmuted and the limitations of the physics, i.e. particle transport, used by the simulation.

HYDRA : High-speed simulation architecture for precision spacecraft formation simulation

e Hierarchical Distributed Reconfigurable Architecture- is a scalable simulation architecture that provides flexibility and ease-of-use which take advantage of modern computation and communication hardware. It also provides the ability to implement distributed - or workstation - based simulations and high-fidelity real-time simulation from a common core. Originally designed to serve as a research platform for examining fundamental challenges in formation flying simulation for future space missions, it is also finding use in other missions and applications, all of which can take advantage of the underlying Object-Oriented structure to easily produce distributed simulations. Hydra automates the process of connecting disparate simulation components (Hydra Clients) through a client server architecture that uses high-level descriptions of data associated with each client to find and forge desirable connections (Hydra Services) at run time. Services communicate through the use of Connectors, which abstract messaging to provide single-interface access to any desired communication protocol, such as from shared-memory message passing to TCP/IP to ACE and COBRA. Hydra shares many features with the HLA, although providing more flexibility in connectivity services and behavior overriding.

Advanced End-to-end Simulation for On-board Processing (AESOP)

Developers of data compression algorithms typically use their own software together with commercial packages to implement, evaluate and demonstrate their work. While convenient for an individual developer, this approach makes it difficult to build on or use another's work without intimate knowledge of each component. When several people or groups work on different parts of the same problem, the larger view can be lost. What's needed is a simple piece of software to stand in the gap and link together the efforts of different people, enabling them to build on each other's work, and providing a base for engineers and scientists to evaluate the parts as a cohesive whole and make design decisions. AESOP (Advanced End-to-end Simulation for On-board Processing) attempts to meet this need by providing a graphical interface to a developer-selected set of algorithms, interfacing with compiled code and standalone programs, as well as procedures written in the IDL and PV-Wave command languages. As a proof of concept, AESOP is outfitted with several data compression algorithms integrating previous work on different processors (AT&T DSP32C, TI TMS320C30, SPARC). The user can specify at run-time the processor on which individual parts of the compression should run. Compressed data is then fed through simulated transmission and uncompression to evaluate the effects of compression parameters, noise and error correction algorithms. The following sections describe AESOP in detail. Section 2 describes fundamental goals for usability. Section 3 describes the implementation. Sections 4 through 5 describe how to add new functionality to the system and present the existing data compression algorithms. Sections 6 and 7 discuss portability and future work.

Simulations and observations of cloudtop processes

Turbulent entrainment at zero mean shear stratified interfaces has been studied extensively in the laboratory and theoretically for the classical situation in which density is a passive tracer of the mixing and the turbulent motions producing the entrainment are directed toward the interface. It is the purpose of the numerical simulations and data analysis to investigate these processes and, specifically, to focus on the following questions: (1) Can local cooling below cloudtop play an important role in setting up convective circulations within the cloud, and bringing about entrainment; (2) Can Cloudtop Entrainment Instability (CEI) alone lead to runaway entrainment under geophysically realistic conditions; and (3) What are the important mechanisms of entrainment at cloudtop under zero or low mean shear conditions.

Systematic Method and Tool for Sustainable Process Synthesis, Designanalysis and Innovation

Computer-aided tools have been successfully developed and used in different segments of the entire process development cycle. For example, there are established tools for chemical process design, simulation, heat exchanger network synthesis and many more. However, one needs an integrated platform to perform process synthesis, design and analysis of chemical processes in a systematic manner. Also, in order to obtain a truly innovative and sustainable solution, it is necessary to search the entire feasible search space of alternatives and select the best process alternative, which is not very easy and will be time consuming. Therefore, it is beneficial to utilize computer-aided methods and tools to enumerate, analyze and determine within the design space, the more sustainable processes. This work highlights the development of a computer aided methodology and corresponding integrated platform for fast, reliable and consistent generation of process flowsheets. As a result, this paper gives an overview of the key concepts and the method is presented along with details of the developed computer-aided tool.

Quantitative Encapsulation and Homogeneity Assessment of Sol–Gel Based Nuclear Explosive Debris Simulants

Nuclear explosive debris simulants are an important material in training and validating aspects of post-detonation nuclear forensic processes. Realistic simulants should replicate several aspects of nuclear explosive debris such as the size, shape, color, density, and chemical and radiological properties. Silica particles produced via sol-gel synthesis have recently been found to successfully reproduce many of these parameters including the controllable incorporation of radionuclide content. However, to be useful as a benchmarking material for validation and verification of laboratory methodologies, radionuclide content from batch-to-batch must be reproducible. Here, in this work, we explore the variance in radionuclide distribution incorporated into sol-gel benchmarking materials with respect to sample subdivision. Results will help inform the sample sizes required to minimize variance between samples.

AbacusSummit Halo Light Cone Catalogs

This is a set of halo light cone catalogs from the AbacusSummit suite of cosmological N-body simulations (abacussummit.readthedocs.io/). They are a value-added data product provided by post-processing the simulation output. The main application of the halo light cone catalogs is the construction of realistic mock galaxy catalogues and weak lensing maps on the sky. The algorithm (described in Hadzhiyska et al. 2021) associates CompaSO halos from 29 redshift epochs spanning z = 0.1-2.5 with their particles at the time of light-cone crossing. It then records the halo and particle information into an easily accessible product, which can be read with the CompaSO reader. The 25 base resolution boxes at fiducial cosmology have a halo light cone catalog covering an octant of the sky to z approx 0.8 and about 2000 deg2 extending to z approx 2.4. The huge boxes provide light cone information of the full sky until z approx 2.18 and extend further towards the corners of the box (available until z = 2.25). Galaxy mock catalogs on the sky can be generated easily though the AbacusHOD script providing an extended HOD framework (see Yuan et al. 2021, for details), which has been modified to work with the halo light cone catalogs. The available tracers are luminous red galaxies (LRGs), emission-line galaxies (ELGs), and quasi-stellar objects (QSOs).

Sensor-based fault diagnosis in a flight expert system

A prototype of a knowledge-based flight expert system (FLES) has been developed to assist airplane pilots in monitoring, analyzing, and diagnosing faults and to provide support in reducing the pilot's own mistakes. A sensor simulation model has been developed to provide FLES with the airplane status information during the diagnostic process. The simulator is based partly on the Advanced Concept System (ACS), a future-generation airplane, and partly on the Boeing 737, an existing airplane. The architecture of FLES contains several subsystems. One of the major subsystems performs fault diagnosis in the electrical system of the ACS. This paper describes the mechanism and functionality of the automatic diagnosis performed in this expert system.

A flight expert system (FLES) for on-board fault monitoring and diagnosis

The increasing complexity of modern aircraft creates a need for a larger number of caution and warning devices. But more alerts require more memorization and higher workloads for the pilot and tend to induce a higher probability of errors. Therefore, an architecture for a flight expert system (FLES) is developed to assist pilots in monitoring, diagnosing and recovering from in-flight faults. A prototype of FLES has been implemented. A sensor simulation model was developed and employed to provide FLES with airplane status information during the diagnostic process. The simulator is based on the Lockheed Advanced Concept System (ACS), a future generation airplane, and on the Boeing 737. A distinction between two types of faults, maladjustments and malfunctions, has led to two approaches to fault diagnosis. These approaches are evident in two FLES subsystems: the flight phase monitor and the sensor interrupt handler. The specific problem addressed in these subsystems has been that of integrating information received from multiple sensors with domain knowledge in order to access abnormal situations during airplane flight. Malfunctions and maladjustments are handled separately, diagnosed using domain knowledge.

Thermochemical Ablation Analysis of the Orion Heatshield

The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle will one day carry astronauts to the Moon and beyond, and Orion's heatshield is a critical component in ensuring their safe return to Earth. The Orion heatshield is the structural component responsible for absorbing the intense heating environment caused by re-entry to Earth's atmosphere. The heatshield is primarily composed of Avcoat, an ablative material that is consumed during the re-entry process. Ablation is primarily characterized by two processes: pyrolysis and recession. The decomposition of in-depth virgin material is known as pyrolysis. Recession occurs when the exposed surface of the heatshield reacts with the surrounding flow. The Orion heatshield design was changed from an individually filled Avcoat honeycomb to a molded block Avcoat design. The molded block Avcoat heatshield relies on an adhesive bond to keep it attached to the capsule. In some locations on the heatshield, the integrity of the adhesive bond cannot be verified. For these locations, a mechanical retention device was proposed. Avcoat ablation was modelled in CHAR and the in-depth virgin material temperatures were used in a Thermal Desktop model of the mechanical retention device. The retention device was analyzed and shown to cause a large increase in the maximum bondline temperature. In order to study the impact of individual ablation modelling parameters on the heatshield sizing process, a Monte Carlo simulation of the sizing process was proposed. The simulation will give the sensitivity of the ablation model to each of its input parameters. As part of the Monte Carlo simulation, statistical uncertainties on material properties were required for Avcoat. Several properties were difficult to acquire uncertainties for: the pyrolysis gas enthalpy, non-dimensional mass loss rate (B´c), and Arrhenius equation parameters. Variability in the elemental composition of Avcoat was used as the basis for determining the statistical uncertainty in pyrolysis gas enthalpy and B´c. A MATLAB program was developed to allow for faster, more accurate and automated computation of Arrhenius reaction parameters. These parameters are required for a material model to be used in the CHAR ablation analysis program. This MATLAB program, along with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data, was used to generate uncertainties on the Arrhenius parameters for Avcoat. In addition, the TGA fitting program was developed to provide Arrhenius parameters for the ablation model of the gap filler material, RTV silicone.

Modeling the VARTM Composite Manufacturing Process

A comprehensive simulation model of the Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Modeling (VARTM) composite manufacturing process has been developed. For isothermal resin infiltration, the model incorporates submodels which describe cure of the resin and changes in resin viscosity due to cure, resin flow through the reinforcement preform and distribution medium and compaction of the preform during the infiltration. The accuracy of the model was validated by measuring the flow patterns during resin infiltration of flat preforms. The modeling software was used to evaluate the effects of the distribution medium on resin infiltration of a flat preform. Different distribution medium configurations were examined using the model and the results were compared with data collected during resin infiltration of a carbon fabric preform. The results of the simulations show that the approach used to model the distribution medium can significantly effect the predicted resin infiltration times. Resin infiltration into the preform can be accurately predicted only when the distribution medium is modeled correctly.

Contrasting landform perception with varied radar illumination geometries and at simulated resolutions of Venera and Magellan

The high sensitivity of imaging radars to slope at moderate to low incidence angles enhances the perception of linear topography on images. It reveals broad spatial patterns that are essential to landform mapping and interpretation. As radar responses are strongly directional, the ability to discriminate linear features on images varies with their orientation. Landforms that appear prominent on images where they are transverse to the illumination may be obscure to indistinguishable on images where they are parallel to it. Landform detection is also influenced by the spatial resolution in radar images. Seasat radar images of the Gran Desierto Dunes complex, Sonora, Mexico; the Appalachian Valley and Ridge Province; and accreted terranes in eastern interior Alaska were processed to simulate both Venera 15 and 16 images (1000 to 3000 km resolution) and image data expected from the Magellan mission (120 to 300 m resolution. The Gran Desierto Dunes are not discernable in the Venera simulation, whereas the higher resolution Magellan simulation shows dominant dune patterns produced from differential erosion of the rocks. The Magellan simulation also shows that fluvial processes have dominated erosion and exposure of the folds.

Simulation of mass storage systems operating in a large data processing facility

A mass storage simulation program was written to aid system designers in the design of a data processing facility. It acts as a tool for measuring the overall effect on the facility of on-line mass storage systems, and it provides the means of measuring and comparing the performance of competing mass storage systems. The performance of the simulation program is demonstrated.

Spatial and temporal variability of the extent of chemically processed stratospheric air

Simulations of the spatial and temporal variability of the extent of chemically processed air in the Arctic stratosphere have been carried out using a three-dimensional chemistry-transport model for the winters of 1979 and 1989. Chemically processed air is identified in the model as that in which the amounts of hydrogen chloride (HCl) calculated with parameterized loss for conditions appropriate to polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) formation are substantially smaller than those calculated in a model with gas phase chemistry only. It is seen that chemically processed air may be identified over much of the Arctic lower stratosphere from early January to late February, with HCl depletions being larger in 1989 than in 1979. Near the latitude of the Arctic circle, there is important spatial and temporal variability in the extent of chemically processed air. There is some evidence for transport to midlatitudes of processed air during these winters, but the HCl reductions are much smaller and more sporadic than those near the pole. At 62 and 42N, processed air is calculated to occur preferentially over the longitude regions from 60-120E and 270-330E.

Shuttle mission simulator

The simulator was designed to provide real time simulation capability for all phases of the Shuttle Transportation System orbital missions including prelaunch, ascent, onorbit operations, deorbit, entry, approach/landing, and rollout. Full mission continuity is provided in transition between these mission phases. Dual fixed and motion base crew stations, instructor/operator stations, and computer systems allow parallel, simultaneous crew training with either complex capable of being individually integrated with the mission control center. This integrated training capability allows flight control personnel training in the air/ground interface areas of tracking, telemetry (vehicle systems monitoring), uplink command control, and communications. With the exception of the simulated Data Processing System, which utilizes actual flight computers and associated flight software, all orbiter onboard systems are functionally simulated with extensive simulated malfunction capabilities. Additionally, crew out-the-window visual scenes, and aural cues are rigorously simulated.
