Charge order landscape and competition with superconductivity in kagome metals

In the kagome metals AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs), three-dimensional charge order is the primary instability that sets the stage for other collective orders to emerge, including unidirectional stripe order, orbital flux order, electronic nematicity and superconductivity. In this report we use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to determine the microscopic structure of three-dimensional charge order in AV 3 Sb 5 and its interplay with superconductivity. Our approach is based on identifying an unusual splitting of kagome bands induced by three-dimensional charge order, which provides a sensitive way to refine the spatial charge patterns in neighbouring kagome planes. Here we found a marked dependence of the three-dimensional charge order structure on composition and doping. The observed difference between CsV 3 Sb 5 and the other compounds potentially underpins the double-dome superconductivity in CsV 3 (Sb,Sn) 5 and the suppression of T c in KV 3 Sb 5 and RbV 3 Sb 5 . Our results provide fresh insights into the rich phase diagram of AV 3 Sb 5 .

Lattice disorder effect on magnetic ordering of iron arsenides

This study investigates magnetic ordering temperature in nano- and mesoscale structural features in an iron arsenide. Although magnetic ground states in quantum materials can be theoretically predicted from known crystal structures and chemical compositions, the ordering temperature is harder to pinpoint due to potential local lattice variations that calculations may not account for. In this work we find surprisingly that a locally disordered material can exhibit a significantly larger Néel temperature (T N ) than an ordered material of precisely the same chemical stoichiometry. Here, a EuFe 2 As 2 crystal, which is a ‘122’ parent of iron arsenide superconductors, is found through synthesis to have ordering below T N = 195 K (for the locally disordered crystal) or T N = 175 K (for the ordered crystal). In the higher T N crystals, there are shorter planar Fe-Fe bonds [2.7692(2) Å vs. 2.7745(3) Å], a randomized in-plane defect structure, and diffuse scattering along the [00 L] crystallographic direction that manifests as a rather broad specific heat peak. For the lower T N crystals, the a-lattice parameter is larger and the in-plane microscopic structure shows defect ordering along the antiphase boundaries, giving a larger T N and a higher superconducting temperature (T c ) upon the application of pressure. First-principles calculations find a strong interaction between c-axis strain and interlayer magnetic coupling, but little impact of planar strain on the magnetic order. Neutron single-crystal diffraction shows that the low-temperature magnetic phase transition due to localized Eu moments is not lattice or disorder sensitive, unlike the higher-temperature Fe sublattice ordering. This study demonstrates a higher magnetic ordering point arising from local disorder in 122.

The Impact of Structural Distortions on the Magnetism of Double Perovskites Containing 5d 1 Transition-Metal Ions

Five double perovskites, each containing a transition-metal ion with a 5d 1 configuration, have been studied to better understand the surprising diversity of magnetic ground states seen in these isoelectronic compounds. Ba 2 ZnReO 6 adopts the cubic double perovskite structure and magnetically orders below 16 K, with a canted ferromagnetic structure and a saturated magnetization of ~0.24 μ B /Re. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism indicates a substantial orbital moment of approximately 0.4 μ B /Re that opposes the spin moment. The structures of Ba 2 NaOsO 6 (canted ferromagnet, T C = 7 K) and Ba 2 LiOsO 6 (antiferromagnet, T N = 8 K) are reinvestigated using time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction and found to crystallize with the cubic double perovskite structure. No evidence for a structural distortion can be found in either compound down to 10 K. Ba 2 CdReO 6 is also cubic at room temperature but undergoes a structural transition upon cooling below ~180 K to a tetragonal structure with I4/m symmetry that involves compression of the Re–O bonds that are parallel to the c-axis. Sr 2 LiOsO 6 shows a similar tetragonal distortion at room temperature and maintains that structure down to 10 K. Surprisingly, the Os-centered octahedron in Sr 2 LiOsO 6 is distorted in the opposite direction, exhibiting an elongation of the Os–O bonds along the c-axis. Differences in the distortions of the octahedra lead to different magnetic ground states, antiferromagnetic (T N = 4 K) for Ba 2 CdReO 6 and spin glass (T g = 30 K) for Sr 2 LiOsO 6 . Theoretical modeling shows that the varied magnetic behaviors of double perovskites containing 5d 1 ions are closely tied to crystallographic distortions. Furthermore, these distortions remove the degeneracy of the 5d t 2g orbitals, leading to changes in orbital occupation that ultimately determine which of the several competing magnetic ground states is favored.

Experimental Validation of an Integrated Controls-Structures Design Methodology

The first experimental validation of an integrated controls-structures design methodology for a class of large order, flexible space structures is described. Integrated redesign of the controls-structures-interaction evolutionary model, a laboratory testbed at NASA Langley, was described earlier. The redesigned structure was fabricated, assembled in the laboratory, and experimentally tested against the original structure. Experimental results indicate that the structure redesigned using the integrated design methodology requires significantly less average control power than the nominal structure with control-optimized designs, while maintaining the required line-of-sight pointing performance. Thus, the superiority of the integrated design methodology over the conventional design approach is experimentally demonstrated. Furthermore, amenability of the integrated design structure to other control strategies is evaluated, both analytically and experimentally. Using Linear-Quadratic-Guassian optimal dissipative controllers, it is observed that the redesigned structure leads to significantly improved performance with alternate controllers as well.

Qualification of room-temperature-curing epoxy adhesives for spacecraft structural applications

An adhesive-bonding test program is being conducted in order to develop structural adhesives applicable to JPL spacecraft. A noteworthy application for such an adhesive will be JPL's Galileo mission, whose trajectory will involve the circumnavigation of the planet Venus prior to Jupiter rendezvous, and will accordingly require stringent temperature and radiation environment requirements. The baseline adhesive for the test program is the EA 934 room temperature-cure epoxy, which has been widely used as a 'space-qualified' material.

Development of load-dependent Ritz vector method for structural dynamic analysis of large space structures

The development and preliminary assessment of a method for dynamic structural analysis based on load-dependent Ritz vectors are presented. The vector basis is orthogonalized with respect to the mass and structural stiffness in order that the equations of motion can be uncoupled and efficient analysis of large space structure performed. A series of computer programs was developed based on the algorithm for generating the orthogonal load-dependent Ritz vectors. Transient dynamic analysis performed on the Space Station Freedom using the software was found to provide solutions that require a smaller number of vectors than the modal analysis method. Error norm based on the participation of the mass distribution of the structure and spatial distribution of structural loading, respectively, were developed in order to provide an indication of vector truncation. These norms are computed before the transient analysis is performed. An assessment of these norms through a convergence study of the structural response was performed. The results from this assessment indicate that the error norms can provide a means of judging the quality of the vector basis and accuracy of the transient dynamic solution.

Reduced-Order Modeling and Wavelet Analysis of Turbofan Engine Structural Response Due to Foreign Object Damage (FOD) Events

The development of a wavelet-based feature extraction technique specifically targeting FOD-event induced vibration signal changes in gas turbine engines is described. The technique performs wavelet analysis of accelerometer signals from specified locations on the engine and is shown to be robust in the presence of significant process and sensor noise. It is envisioned that the technique will be combined with Kalman filter thermal/health parameter estimation for FOD-event detection via information fusion from these (and perhaps other) sources. Due to the lack of high-frequency FOD-event test data in the open literature, a reduced-order turbofan structural model (ROM) was synthesized from a finite element model modal analysis to support the investigation. In addition to providing test data for algorithm development, the ROM is used to determine the optimal sensor location for FOD-event detection. In the presence of significant noise, precise location of the FOD event in time was obtained using the developed wavelet-based feature.

Iodine orbital moment and chromium anisotropy contributions to CrI 3 magnetism

The recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnets, with a number of interesting magnetic properties, has drawn much interest due to their potential for future 2D spintronic device applications. CrI 3 , a van der Waals magnet, exhibits two-dimensional ferromagnetism even in monolayer form, stabilized by strong magnetic anisotropy. Its interlayer magnetic ordering is coupled to structural layer stacking, implying that the charge density distribution mediating van der Waals interactions plays a key role in the magnetic interaction between the layers. Using polarization-dependent x-ray spectroscopy, we investigated the response of the electronic environment around Cr and I sites to structural changes of layer stacking order. The highly anisotropic nature of the Cr local environment is significantly enhanced and is accompanied by changes in the valence band, in the rhombohedral phase. Magnetic spectroscopy measurements reveal a sizable iodine orbital moment, indicating the iodine contribution to magnetic anisotropy. Finally, our results uncover an important role for the extended nature of anisotropic Cr orbital states in dictating interlayer magnetic interactions and the iodine contribution to magnetic anisotropy.

Applicability/evaluation of flux based representations for linear/higher order elements for heat transfer in structures - Generalized gamma(T)-family

The applicability and evaluation of a generalized gamma(T) family of flux-based representations are examined for two different thermal analysis formulations for structures and materials which exhibit no phase change effects. The so-called H-theta and theta forms are demonstrated for numerous test models and linear and higher-order elements. The results show that the theta form with flux-based representations is generally superior to traditional approaches.

Low-energy electronic structure in the unconventional charge-ordered state of ScV6Sn6

Abstract Kagome vanadates A V 3 Sb 5 display unusual low-temperature electronic properties including charge density waves (CDW), whose microscopic origin remains unsettled. Recently, CDW order has been discovered in a new material ScV 6 Sn 6 , providing an opportunity to explore whether the onset of CDW leads to unusual electronic properties. Here, we study this question using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The ARPES measurements show minimal changes to the electronic structure after the onset of CDW. However, STM quasiparticle interference (QPI) measurements show strong dispersing features related to the CDW ordering vectors. A plausible explanation is the presence of a strong momentum-dependent scattering potential peaked at the CDW wavevector, associated with the existence of competing CDW instabilities. Our STM results further indicate that the bands most affected by the CDW are near vHS, analogous to the case of A V 3 Sb 5 despite very different CDW wavevectors.

Heteroanionic Ruddlesden-Popper ferroelectrics from anion order and octahedral tilts

We describe a strategy to design ferroelectric heteroanionic materials based on the coupling of anion order and octahedral tilts in n = 1 Ruddlesden-Popper structures, which allows noncentrosymmetric and polar compounds to arise from centrosymmetric anion-ordered structures. Here we investigate the relative phase stabilities of the polymorphs of Sr 2 ScO 3 F and Ca 2 ScO 3 F derived from this coupling using electronic structure calculations. We find that large degrees of octahedral tilting can stabilize different anion orders derived from assembly of [ScO 5 F] 8– octahedra. To further understand the link between octahedral tilting and anion order, we quantitatively separate the contributions of electrostatics and covalent interactions to the stability of tilts. We find that the tilts are driven primarily by covalent interactions and that local out-of-plane polar displacements, induced from the anion order, further stabilize the octahedral tilts through the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect.

Address-based filtering for load/store speculation

Address-based filtering for load/store speculation includes maintaining a filtering table including table entries associated with ranges of addresses; in response to receiving an ordering check triggering transaction, querying the filtering table using a target address of the ordering check triggering transaction to determine if an instruction dependent upon the ordering check triggering transaction has previously been generated a physical address; and in response to determining that the filtering table lacks an indication that the instruction dependent upon the ordering check triggering transaction has previously been generated a physical address, bypassing a lookup operation in an ordering violation memory structure to determine whether the instruction dependent upon the ordering check triggering transaction is currently in-flight.

Probing configurational disorder in ZnGeN 2 using cluster-based Monte Carlo

ZnGeN 2 is sought as a semiconductor with comparable lattice constant to GaN and tunable band gap for integration in optoelectronic devices. Configurational disorder on the cation sublattice of ZnGeN 2 can strongly modify the electronic structure compared to the ordered material, and both ordered and disordered forms of ZnGeN 2 are candidates for light-emitting diodes and other emitters. The nonisovalent character of the disordered species (Zn 2+ and Ge 4+ ) subjects the cation ordering to strong short-range order effects. To model these effects, we use Monte Carlo (MC) simulations utilizing a cluster expansion to approximate formation enthalpy. Representative disordered configurations in 1024-atom supercells are relaxed in density functional theory calculations. From the MC structures, we extract a short-range order parameter (the N-cation coordination motif), and two long-range order parameters (Bragg-Williams and stretching parameters), and examine their correlations. We perform a thermodynamic integration to determine the mixing entropy and free energy. ZnGeN 2 exhibits a first-order phase transition with pronounced discontinuities in enthalpy and entropy, as well as in the structural order parameters. We discuss the relationship between the effective temperature used in the MC simulation and the growth temperatures in experiment in relation to the crossover from the nonequilibrium to the equilibrium growth regime. This work expands on current models of site disorder in ZnGeN 2 and provides atomic structure models with a systematic variation of the degree of cation disorder.

In Situ Scattering Studies of Superconducting Vacancy‐Ordered Monoclinic TiO Thin Films

Abstract The structural and transport properties of vacancy‐ordered monoclinic superconducting titanium oxide (TiO) thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy are investigated. The evolution of the crystal structure during growth is monitored by in situ synchrotron X‐ray diffraction. Long‐range ordering of Ti and O vacancies in the disordered cubic phase stabilizes the vacancy‐ordered monoclinic TiO phase. The reduced structural disorder arising from vacancy‐ordering is correlated with a superconductor‐metal transition (SMT) in contrast to the superconductor‐insulator transition (SIT) observed in cubic TiO, orthorhombic Ti 2 O 3 , and the Magneli γ − Ti 3 O 5 and γ − Ti 4 O 7 phase. Magnetoresistance measurements for the SIT phases indicate superconducting fluctuations persisting in the normal phase. These results confirm the role of disorder related to Ti and O vacancies and structural inhomogeneity in determining the electronic properties of the normal state of titanium oxide‐based superconductors.
