Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Modeling (AIIM) Onshore Pipeline Database

The Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Modeling (AIIM) Onshore Pipeline Database is an interoperable spatial resource containing critical environmental, operational, and reported stressors tied to publicly available oil and gas pipeline locations across the contiguous U.S. and Alaska. This database contains two layers: 1. Pipeline point locations (‘pipeline_points’) – More than 500,000 points (at every kilometer along pipelines, and end points) to which more than 350 stress-related variables have been appended. 2. Merged pipelines (‘merged_pipelines’) – The original, publicly available pipeline data (see table below) merged together into one feature class.

Offshore Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Model (AIIM) Dashboard

The Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Model (AIIM) is a multivariate, multi-machine learning modeling technology applied to evaluate the integrity of offshore energy infrastructure (e.g., pipelines, platforms) in the U.S Gulf Region. Offshore energy infrastructure plays an essential role in ensuring access to safe and secure energy for the United States. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), production in the U.S. Gulf Region accounts for 15% of total crude and 5% of total natural gas from the United States. Many of these structures have been operating for close to or past their design life, while others have the chance of attrition before return on investment. To better understand the potential for reuse or life extension opportunities, an assessment of the infrastructure integrity is critical to inform safe decision making. Assessing structural integrity, AIIM provides key insights that inform infrastructure use and reuse, as well as hazard prevention planning, in support of stakeholders including researchers and industry.

Design of a non-invasive laser-based beam profile monitor system for the new Fermilab PIP-II superconducting H- linac

As part of the new Proton Improvement Plan (PIP-II), Fermilab is undertaking the development of a new 800 MeV, 2 mA H- superconducting RF linac to replace its present normal conducting 400 MeV linac. The PIP-II linac consists of a series of superconducting RF cryomodules from 2.1 MeV to 800 MeV. To limit the potential damage to the superconducting RF cavities, PIP-II will utilize non-invasive laser-based monitors (laserwires) to obtain beam profiles via photoionization. This paper will present the design of this PIP-II laserwire system including the picosecond pulsed laser, optical transport line, 13 individual laserwire stations, laser feedback and timing controls. The paper also describes the signal detection system and operation of the profile measurements.

LANL Phase 3 Container Loading in Support of the Fire-Induced Pressure Response and Failure Characterization of PCV/SCV/3013 Containers

The PCV/SCV/3013 Thermal Test Program is intended to determine the pressure response of packaged 3013 containers when exposed to a facility fire in the K-Area Complex (KAC) at the Savannah River Site. The fire tests support the KAC safety basis and must be bounding of the maximum pressure that would result from any 3013 container exposed to a KAC facility fire. The testing program has the following objectives: “To increase understanding of the pressure and temperature conditions at which failure occurs; To determine the allowable moisture for which failure will not occur under specified fire conditions, and; To increase understanding regarding the effects of salts on the pressurization, corrosion, and potential failure of the container.”

Evaluating Offshore Infrastructure Integrity

Drilling in the offshore environment involves a complex network of infrastructure including pipelines, platforms, rigs, subsea installations, ports, and terminals. Government and industry partners have developed this network over many decades and it remains a critical part of the United States (U.S.) energy portfolio. Many of the major components of this system have been designed with a 20- to 30-year lifespan, yet consistent and growing energy demands support the need to extend the design life of existing infrastructure or repurpose it for secondary needs (i.e. enhanced oil recovery, carbon storage, and new wells). As a result, a growing portion of the offshore infrastructure in the U.S. is approaching or has exceeded its original design life. A critical step in ensuring the continued safe and effective operation of offshore infrastructure is developing a comprehensive understanding of the state of offshore infrastructure and the factors that effect it. The purpose of this project is to assess the current state of existing infrastructure and identify the factors involved in infrastructure degradation through the development and application of big data analytics, machine learning, and advanced spatio-temporal analysis. The project leverages existing data at NETL and combines it with new information on offshore oil and gas structures and the ambient offshore environment in an effort to identify patterns associated with infrastructure integrity. Building on the identified trends and patterns, this project incorporates exploratory analytics and spatial analysis tools in conjunction with machine learning and statistical models to characterize the condition of existing platforms in the offshore environment and predict their risk of failure.

Adhesion of Titanium Coatings on Additively Manufactured Stainless Steel

The ongoing global climate change crisis has brought attention to the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles by providing alternative zero-emission fueling technologies. Prevailing vehicles are dependent on fossil fuels and contribute to climate change by creating emissions of carbon dioxide. In 2019, transportation was the largest contributing economic sector to the U.S. greenhouse gas emissions total at 29% [1]. By converting vehicle fueling to an alternative method, major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved. Hydrogen fuel cells are one potential alternative capable of generating electricity from hydrogen while emitting only water. Several obstacles hinder the development of hydrogen fuel cells as a viable alternative, including the manufacturability of bipolar plates.

Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between National Energy Technology Laboratory and VariGrid Explorations Inc. [Final Report]

The scope of this project is to advance the National Energy Technology Laboratory’s (NETL) Variable Grid Method (VGM) technology to commercial status thought enhancements upon prior work to produce a VGM application that can rapidly quantify multiple types of data and uncertainty commonly encountered by the subsurface energy industry. Along with development, the project will also include technology demonstrations, through applications using common industry data types and uncertainty metrics, to stress the value the VGM can offer the subsurface energy industry by providing an improved understanding of the strengths and limitations of their data, models, and analytical results. The resulting commercially ready VGM will offer interoperability with common industry software applications to ensure broad ‘plug and play’ functionality that will help keep costs relatively low and foster more rapid industry adoption.

PurpleAir Sensors as Effective Indicators of PM Exposure in Urban Areas

Particulate matter that is 2.5 microns or less in diameter (PM 2.5 ) is a biproduct of combustion reactions used for energy production. Populations that are exposed to consistently high levels of aerosolized PM 2.5 face serious health risks. This project compared low-cost PM 2.5 sensors with federally recognized methods to look for a cost-effective way to expand the air quality monitor network. Within metropolitan areas that face inconsistent spatial distribution of PM 2.5 , there may not be the necessary network density to indicate neighborhood-levels of PM 2.5 . This project aimed to examine the sensitivity of low-cost PM 2.5 sensor measurements on a neighborhood scale (< 4 km diameter) in an urban area to prevent citizens from being exposed to unsafe levels of PM 2.5 without their knowledge. Using publicly available sensor data from Livermore, CA and Bakersfield, CA, it was determined, based on the revealed patterns, that the analyzed low-cost sensors were able to display representative PM 2.5 levels for neighborhoodscale areas exposed to pollution from PM 2.5 sources.

Evaluating the Nation's Pipeline Infrastructure with NETL's Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Model (AIIM)

This poster is a part of BIL-EDX4CCS Task 36: Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Modeling to Evaluate Existing Energy Infrastructure Reusability and Risk, the goal of which is to produce a smart tool that will assess existing energy infrastructure reusability and risk using the Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Model (AIIM). This model forecasts lifespan and potential risk using a multitude of factors such as incidents reports, structural characteristics, and the surrounding environment. The project aims to provide scientific insights for a better understanding of carbon storage (CS), potential to support CS stakeholder needs, national decarbonization, and mitigating climate change. AIIM will utilize an energy infrastructure database as its input, developed by acquiring publicly available data as well as NETL derived products. These resources include incidents, geohazards, and infrastructure variables. Soil data in the form of rasters and pipeline incident reports were processed and a script was developed to count the number of times features such as roads, railroads, and rivers intersected with pipeline segments which were then converted to points. Distance to oil and natural gas wells, petroleum ports, intermodal freight facilities, and geologic structures were also calculated. After data preparation and quality control was completed, the data was integrated into the pipeline points. Once models are complete, a smart tool will be created in the form of an online dashboard.
