SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria User Manual - Version 4.52

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process flows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number (Re < 1) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newton's method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton-Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic h-adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Aria's more advanced capabilities.

ITreeForeCast: An integrated modeling software to simulate tree level growth and forest carbon storage

Healthy trees in forest act as a natural carbon sink, capturing carbon. As they grow, they store carbon in their trunks, leaves and roots. Not all trees store carbon at the same rate, or in the same quantities, as it depends on a variety of biophysical and climatic factors. Furthermore, although carbon estimation in trees can be complex, the precision of estimates is tightly linked to trees growth, both in diameter and height. However, the simulation of carbon uptake by forest and forest growth has each been modeled separately, and independently at differing levels of detail and spatial resolution. In this paper, we introduce ITreeForeCast, a simulation model combining the two types of modeling on a unified platform, enabling the investigation of impacts of management strategies on carbon sequestration and wood products. ITreeForeCast is a user-extendable framework that offers new opportunities to model, simulate, and visualize the dynamics of individual trees in a forest, simulate management strategies over time, and carbon uptake.

Rheological Properties of Enzymatically Hydrolyzed Corn Stover Pretreated via Deacetylation and Mechanical Refining

Lignocellulosic biomass is a feedstock for fuels and chemicals that does not compete with food resources and has less contaminants than refuse-derived biomass feedstocks. To convert lignocellulosics to biofuels or value-added products, multiple processing steps are typically necessary. One method of producing biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass utilizes a deacetylation and mechanical refining pretreatment and an enzymatic hydrolysis reaction to produce fermentable sugars from cellulose and hemicellulose. The rheological properties of biomass, such as yield stress and plastic viscosity, change during enzymatic hydrolysis and alter the energy requirements for pumping and mixing, an important consideration for the design of processing equipment. The dynamic changes in rheological properties that occur in a corn stover feedstock undergoing enzymatic hydrolysis are characterized in this work, and the influence on pressure losses in piping systems is estimated. Two rheometer geometries were fabricated with stereolithography 3D printing to reduce wall slip and sample ejection. The slurries have complex rheological behaviors that include shear-thinning behavior. Shear stress ramps were performed on samples at 20 and 50 degrees C using the custom geometries, and the Herschel-Bulkley model was fit to the data. The dynamic nature of the rheological properties is correlated with changes in the average fiber length at various extents of reaction, and the influence of solids concentration on the observed rheology and piping pressure losses is discussed.

Validation of the Community Land Model Version 5 over the Contiguous United States (CONUS) using in-situ and remote sensing datasets

The Community Land Model (CLM) is an effective tool to simulate the biophysical and biogeochemical processes and their interactions with the atmosphere. Although CLM Version 5 (CLM5) constitutes various updates in these processes, its performance in simulating energy, water and carbon cycles over the Contiguous United States (CONUS) at scales which land surface changes and hydrometeorological and hydroclimatological applications are more locally relevant is yet to be assessed. In this study, we conducted three simulations at 0.125? during 1979-2018 over the CONUS using different configurations of CLM, namely CLM5-biogeochemistry (CLM5BGC), CLM4.5BGC, and CLM5-satellite phenology (CLM5SP). We validated and compared their simulations against multiple remote-sensed and in-situ datasets. Overall, the parametric and structural updates (e.g., carbon cost for nitrogen uptake, variable soil thickness, dry surface layer) in CLM5 improve its ability in capturing terrestrial biogeochemical dynamics. The low evapotranspiration in CLM5BGC is associated with biases in simulating vegetation phenological characteristics rather than soil water limitations. The mismatch between CLM5BGC-simulated peak leaf area index and reference data can be attributed to CLM5BGC's inability in simulating phenology of trees and grasses. The differences between CLM-simulated irrigation and reference estimates can be attributed to differences between processes represented in models and in reality, and uncertainties in input and validation datasets. Evaluation against observations at small catchments suggest that hydrologic parameters needed to be calibrated to improve simulations of runoff, especially subsurface runoff. Additional efforts are needed to incorporate spatially-distributed plant phenology and physiology parameters and regional-specific agricultural management practices (e.g., planting, harvest).
