Conflict Resolution Strategies for Balloon-Airship Encounters in Upper Class E Air Traffic Management (ETM)

This paper examines strategic conflict resolution strategies for pair-wise high-altitude balloon, airship encounters. By strategic is meant that the conflict is identified (detected) at the time of flight plan submission or flight plan alteration through a service, such as an ETM Service Supplier (ESS). We investigate optimal control solutions for two classes of problems: non-cooperative, where the balloon must alter its ascent trajectory in order to avoid the airship and cooperative, where both vehicles make maneuvers through a negotiation protocol.

A neural-network-based machine learning interface has been developed for the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE). The interface relies on Libtorch, the C++ front-end of PyTorch, and enables an online interaction between modern machine learning algorithms and all the existing simulation, modeling, and analysis processes available in MOOSE. New capabilities in MOOSE include the native generation and training of artificial neural networks together with options to load pretrained neural networks in TorchScript format. Furthermore, the MOOSE stochastic tools module (MOOSE-STM) has been enhanced with neural network-based surrogate and reduced-order model generation options for efficient stochastic analyses. Lastly, a reinforcement learning capability has been added to MOOSE-STM for the interactive control and optimization of complex multiphysics problems.

Joint Optimization for Transport and Bucket Loading Phases of Automated Wheel Loaders

This article investigates optimization of fuel-efficiency and productivity for automated wheel loaders. A control-oriented model for both the transport phase and bucket loading phase is proposed. Here, the vehicle model includes an automatic gear shift schedule that can be incorporated into the optimization problem. Based on the model, the multistage optimization problem is formulated to simultaneously consider all phases of a short cycle with physical constraints. Cycle time and fuel efficiency are used as the weighted performance indexes in a multiobjective cost function. Bucket fill factor is included as a constraint during the bucket loading phase. A nonlinear programming problem is created with collocation using MATLAB and CasADi. The optimization solver IPOPT solves the problem to obtain the optimal state and control trajectories, which can be used as a reference for automated wheel loaders or even as a driver advisory for human-driven wheel loaders.

Feedback control for fuel-optimal descents using singular perturbation techniques

In response to rising fuel costs and reduced profit margins for the airline companies, the optimization of the paths flown by transport aircraft has been considered. It was found that application of optimal control theory to the considered problem can result in savings in fuel, time, and direct operating costs. The best solution to the aircraft trajectory problem is an onboard real-time feedback control law. The present paper presents a technique which shows promise of becoming a part of a complete solution. The application of singular perturbation techniques to the problem is discussed, taking into account the benefits and some problems associated with them. A different technique for handling the descent part of a trajectory is also discussed.

An exact algebraic solution of the infimum in H-infinity optimization with output feedback

This paper presents a simple and noniterative procedure for the computation of the exact value of the infimum in the standard H-infinity-optimal control with output feedback. The problem formulation is general and does not place any restrictions on the direct feedthrough terms between the control input and the controlled output variables, and between the disturbance input and the measurement output variables. The method is applicable to systems that satisfy (1) the transfer function from the control input to the controlled output is right-invertible and has no invariant zeros on the j(w) axis and, (2) the transfer function from the disturbance to the measurement output is left-invertible and has no invariant zeros on the j(w) axis. A set of necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of H-infinity-almost disturbance decoupling problem via measurement feedback with internal stability is also given.

CONDUIT: A New Multidisciplinary Integration Environment for Flight Control Development

A state-of-the-art computational facility for aircraft flight control design, evaluation, and integration called CONDUIT (Control Designer's Unified Interface) has been developed. This paper describes the CONDUIT tool and case study applications to complex rotary- and fixed-wing fly-by-wire flight control problems. Control system analysis and design optimization methods are presented, including definition of design specifications and system models within CONDUIT, and the multi-objective function optimization (CONSOL-OPTCAD) used to tune the selected design parameters. Design examples are based on flight test programs for which extensive data are available for validation. CONDUIT is used to analyze baseline control laws against pertinent military handling qualities and control system specifications. In both case studies, CONDUIT successfully exploits trade-offs between forward loop and feedback dynamics to significantly improve the expected handling, qualities and minimize the required actuator authority. The CONDUIT system provides a new environment for integrated control system analysis and design, and has potential for significantly reducing the time and cost of control system flight test optimization.

Trajectory Optimization Using Adjoint Method and Chebyshev Polynomial Approximation for Minimizing Fuel Consumption During Climb

This paper describes two methods of trajectory optimization to obtain an optimal trajectory of minimum-fuel- to-climb for an aircraft. The first method is based on the adjoint method, and the second method is based on a direct trajectory optimization method using a Chebyshev polynomial approximation and cubic spine approximation. The approximate optimal trajectory will be compared with the adjoint-based optimal trajectory which is considered as the true optimal solution of the trajectory optimization problem. The adjoint-based optimization problem leads to a singular optimal control solution which results in a bang-singular-bang optimal control.

An optimum settling problem for time lag systems.

A solution is presented to an optimization problem for time lag systems by the classical method of Lagrange multipliers in a Banach space. Following terminology and assumption definitions, the regularity and controllability of the Lagrange multipliers problem is discussed, and a set of necessary conditions for an optimal control is derived. In conclusion, the solution existence, uniqueness, and sufficiency are established.

Optimally Scaled H(sub infinity) Full Information Control Synthesis with Real Uncertainty

This paper presents an algorithm to synthesize optimal controllers for the scaled H(sub infinity). full information problem with real and complex uncertainty. The control problem is reduced to a linear matrix inequality which can be solved via a finite dimensional convex optimization. This technique is compared with the optimal scaled H(sub infinity). full information with only complex uncertainty and D - K iteration control design to synthesize controllers for a missile autopilot. Directly including real parametric uncertainty into the control design results in improved robust performance of the missile autopilot. The controller synthesized via D - K iteration achieves results similar to the optimal designs.

Risk-averse optimal control of semilinear elliptic PDEs

In this paper, we consider the optimal control of semilinear elliptic PDEs with random inputs. These problems are often nonconvex, infinite-dimensional stochastic optimization problems for which we employ risk measures to quantify the implicit uncertainty in the objective function. In contrast to previous works in uncertainty quantification and stochastic optimization, we provide a rigorous mathematical analysis demonstrating higher solution regularity (in stochastic state space), continuity and differentiability of the control-to-state map, and existence, regularity and continuity properties of the control-to-adjoint map. Our proofs make use of existing techniques from PDE-constrained optimization as well as concepts from the theory of measurable multifunctions. We illustrate our theoretical results with two numerical examples motivated by the optimal doping of semiconductor devices.

Optimal command generation for tracking a class of discontinuous trajectories

Commands are found to drive a linear system to optimally track a class of prescribed trajectories, each of which contains a point of discontinuity. The paper focuses on the guidance problem of command generation, to be implemented in a feedforward fashion; the necessary additional control or feedback regulation structure is not studied in detail, but assumed to be provided in applications as a conventional error-feedback regulator. Solutions are found for the infinite-time problem which are optimal with respect to a quadratic performance criterion; suboptimal controls which satisfy a continuity condition are also found. The controls have applications to certain problems in aircraft guidance where command trajectories are piecewise continuous. Several examples are worked out in detail, with comparisons with conventional, nonfeedforward solutions to the problem, and a brief discussion of a simpler, suboptimal solution.

Optimal Power Management for Large-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems via Bayesian Inference

Large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) have found ever-increasing use across industry and society to accelerate clean energy transition and improve energy supply reliability and resilience. However, their optimal power management poses significant challenges: the underlying high-dimensional nonlinear nonconvex optimization lacks computational tractability in real-world implementation, and the uncertainty of the exogenous power demand makes exact optimization difficult. This paper presents a new solution framework to address these bottlenecks. The solution pivots on introducing power-sharing ratios to specify each cell’s power quota from the output power demand. To find the optimal power-sharing ratios, we formulate a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) problem to achieve power-loss-minimizing BESS operation while complying with safety, cell balancing, and power supply-demand constraints. We then propose a parameterized control policy for the power-sharing ratios, which utilizes only three parameters, to reduce the computational demand in solving the NMPC problem. This policy parameterization allows us to translate the NMPC problem into a Bayesian inference problem for the sake of 1) computational tractability, and 2) overcoming the nonconvexity of the optimization problem. We leverage the ensemble Kalman inversion technique to solve the parameter estimation problem. Concurrently, a low-level control loop is developed to seamlessly integrate our proposed approach with the BESS to ensure practical implementation. This low-level controller receives the optimal power-sharing ratios, generates output power references for the cells, and maintains a balance between power supply and demand despite uncertainty in output power. We conduct extensive simulations and experiments on a 20-cell prototype to validate the proposed approach.

Sparse Control Synthesis for Uncertain Responsive Loads With Stochastic Stability Guarantees

In this report, recent studies have demonstrated the potential of flexible loads in providing frequency response services, predominantly due to their availability and cost-effectiveness. However, uncertainty and variability in various weather-related and end-use behavioral factors often impact the reliability of demand-side control performance. This work addresses this problem with the design of a demand-side control to achieve frequency response under load uncertainties. Our approach involves modeling the load uncertainties via stochastic processes that appear as both multiplicative and additive in the power system dynamics. Recently developed mean square exponential stability (MSES) results for continuous-time linear stochastic systems are applied to pose the control synthesis problem which results in an LMI-based optimization problem. Additional costs and constraints are added to the LMI-based controller synthesis to ensure MSES, improve closed-loop transient performance, maximize tolerable uncertainties, and promote sparsity in the controller. Additionally, the fundamental limitations between the tolerable uncertainties and control efforts while ensuring MSES are discussed. Further, the control synthesis problem for the case of the full-state measurement is generalized to the case of partial-state measurements. The proposed control synthesis is illustrated on an IEEE 39 bus system with rigorous studies to demonstrate the role of sparsity, closed-loop transient performance, tolerable uncertainties, and control efforts while ensuring MSES and achieving frequency response.

Feedback Implementation of Zermelo's Optimal Control by Sugeno Approximation

This paper proposes an approach to implement optimal control laws of nonlinear systems in real time. Our methodology does not require solving two-point boundary value problems online and may not require it off-line either. The optimal control law is learned using the original Sugeno controller (OSC) from a family of optimal trajectories. We compare the trajectories generated by the OSC and the trajectories yielded by the optimal feedback control law when applied to Zermelo's ship steering problem.
